    Okinawan Sweet Potato Cake

Now that I've switched jobs and in a neighborhood where I'm familiar with, I find myself exploring and now close to Kamehameha Shopping Center (KSC) with so many different shops. One of them is Honu Bakery (HB) where I've had a disappointing experience that kept me away. While breaking free from work to redeem my freebie from TMobile, I drove to KSC and saw HB as I was parking my car. Morale in the office has been low lately and decided to get some goodies from HB to brighten up the mood. There was a large selection of baked goods upon arrival and made a beeline to their famous turtle bread and noticed there are now 2 types: their signature buttercream of 22 years and ube, just launched on 5/9/2026. The vibrant purple color really caught my eye where I picked up 1 regular buttercream and 2 ube, where I also wanted to surprise my family as I was having dinner with them later that day. I paid for my purchase and although it was costly, I was banking to cheer up my colleagues and surprise my family. I sent a message via Teams advising my colleagues to enjoy the baked goods and received favorable responses. Many were happy for the pick me up and a handful of them commented on how delicious the ube turtle bread was. In the end, I noticed the ube version disappeared faster than the regular buttercream version. Later that evening, after our family dinner I brought out an array of desserts that also included the ube turtle bread. Favorite niece be default commented on the catchy purple color and many enjoyed the soft sweet bread snack. Service could have been better as staff seemed robotic and lacked customer service. HB lacked positive energy and disappointing during the checkout experience. Overall, a much better experience at HB where they are deserving of an update with a higher rating from me. The experience would have been better with more friendly staff to engage with customers over robotic staff lacking personality and interpersonal skills.

I needed something sweet to eat! Since I just went to Kam Bowl one last time, I remembered Honu. They have so much to offer! A friend of mine told me about the Ube Honu bread, but it's such a large loaf and I'm only me...so they will have to wait to share! But I did get an ube filled creme bun and it was great! The staff is friendly and again, it's really had to choose from everything they have! Until next time! Mahalo Honu!

I ordered online, confirmed over phone, picked up early morning the day I needed. I had received email receipt and confirmation. There was plenty of parking at Kalihi location. Great communication. Friendly counter staff. The cakes were both very delicious and perfect.

Honu Bakery is located in the Kamehameha Shopping Center. I personally like to come here in the morning right after I drop off my kids to school. It is a cute bakery with friendly staff. They have a variety of pastries, cakes, and cupcakes, and they also serve coffee and drinks. I have purchased the cakes a few times for my kids' birthdays and they are so good! They are fluffy, not too sweet but still flavorful! They have cute cake designs and they also personalize too! The drinks I like to order are the iced Honu latte which is macadamia and coconut, and the iced sea salt caramel latte. I also like to get the banana pudding and the chocolate croissant.

The pastries and cakes here were delicious, and the matcha drink was refreshing. Service was quick, especially since there was barely a line when we arrived, though it picked up shortly after. The ambiance is chill and makes it a great spot to grab snacks with family. The cake is seriously so good! They also offer custom cakes for events, which is a nice bonus

Cute little bakery. They have a few chairs (bar style) inside where you can enjoy your desserts and drinks. I got the Dubai Chocolate latte and my friend got the Americano. We had mango panacotta and strawberry matcha. Everything was delicious! Service was great. Everyone was friendly and patient while we decided what we wanted. It was also quick. They have pastries, breads, cupcakes and cakes here too. Check them out!

Located in the Kamehameha Shopping Center, Honu Bakery is the perfect place to pick up some yummy and adorable treats! They have cute decorated cupcakes like panda bears, polar bears, Elmo, Hello Kitty, and more! They also offer their famous Turtle Bread, which is how I first discovered them. A friend gave me a Turtle Bread and after I saw it and tasted it, I just had to check out the bakery! I've been a fan and customer ever since. The baked good items are decent, but not the best. However, the variety and assortment of their decorated items make it worth it! I've recently ordered cakes for my twin boys' birthday celebrations. Last year, I ordered the doggy cake for their birthday. They loved it! This year, I went in person to order cupcakes for their class birthday celebration. We went with the adorable panda bear and polar bear cupcakes. The staff is friendly and helpful. Happy Eating!

Coffee tasted like water no flavor. Matcha did not taste anything like matcha. Took a sip of each and did not drink anymore.

Honu Bakery is the go to for those last minute "oh no, I need a cake or dessert!" moments when every other bakery is already closed. Thankfully, they've got our backs until 7 PM. Their cakes are not just delicious but also fun sometimes shaped like animals or characters, making it almost too cute to eat (almost). Pretty sure the bakers here are Korean, and one thing I've noticed about their cakes aside from being ridiculously good is that they have a unique twist. If you're expecting a full-on cheesecake or Okinawan sweet potato cake, think again. Instead of being one dense block, they layer soft, airy chiffon cake with cream cheese or Okinawan sweet potato filling, making them lighter and way too easy to eat without feeling stuffed. But sometimes you do want that full non chiffon layered dessert so that is the only downside to this place. Favorites? Definitely the mango, blueberry, and strawberry cheesecakes, plus the Okinawan sweet potato cake they are all a must try. And let's not forget the adorable animal cupcakes. Too cute to eat... but obviously, I still do. The staff here? Just as sweet as the cakes. Super friendly, lighthearted, and their personalities match the good vibes of this place. Love it here!

Banana pudding matcha latte. Not too sweet. Well-balanced. Made with REAL bananas.

The service completely won me over. The owner was so genuine, which is rare to find in the food service industry these days. I tried soboro ppang for the first time and instantly became a fan. I appreciated seeing a Korean pastry and it being up to par because Hawaii is sorely lacking solid Korean bakeries. The matcha cookie was a GOOD cookie. It's worth the price point.

Similar to pastries at 85 degrees C. They make their breads at a different location and get daily deliveries. Breads are soft an not too sweet. Price point is high but that's "normal" here on the island. I tried their Honu coffee latte and matcha latte. Super milky and light in matcha and light in coffee. 95% milk, 5% tea/coffee. VERY disappointing.

Get their special Turtle Bread... if it runs out then go early the next day. This particular day we were just grabbing pastries for the kids on the way to the Bishop Museum.

Dessert display case. Variety of cupcakes.

Such a cute bakery! This location is definitely bigger than the King St. location. With much more variety, space, and options. So much cutely decorated cupcakes and cakes. Their ube cream puff is sooo delicious. Can be a little pricy, but worth it! So delicious! Friendly staff.

I'd been curious about trying their matcha offerings, so I was excited. We came on a holiday morning, and there wasn't anyone inside. The cafe is cute and vibey! Love how pet-friendly it is with the polaroids--I'd definitely bring my pup here. There's also a decent amount of seating to hang out or work at. Service was fine. I ordered at the register, and she made my drink immediately. I was intrigued by their Haupia Matcha Latte. I love all things Haupia, so it seemed like the perfect match. I got the Haupia Matcha Latte with Oat Milk, and it was superb. I loved how creamy it was, how the sweetness of the haupia shone, but the earthiness of the matcha was still there. I'd definitely recommend this drink and am curious about their others. Hello Again is a nice cafe addition to Chinatown. With all the cafes in the area, it's worth a visit if you're a matcha lover like me. Find the cafe off Nuuanu Ave., unassuming on the outside but nicely sized once you go in! They have small tables and cubicle-style setups with charging ports, so it's easy to settle in, sip, and work if you want. I came mainly to unwind and try a few of their matcha drinks. The banana bread latte is one I personally like, and the haupia matcha has a nice coconut kick. The ube matcha latte was just okay--the matcha overpowered the ube and the flavor kind of drifted. Not sure if the powder was a bit heavy that day or if the water temperature played a role, but I wouldn't order that one again. There are still other flavors I haven't tried, plus milk alternatives like oat milk available. A fun touch is the cameras they place on the tables so you can snap photos of your drink, yourself, friends, or whatever. Just know they may post some of the pics on their social media from time to time--it's a cute way to bring the community together. Hours are short, so check their socials before heading over. Overall, I love the aesthetic of the café and the matcha is decent for a quick fix. I'd definitely come back.

I do like things on the sweeter side, so if you're not into sweeter matcha, this may not be your cup of tea. But for those who do like sweeter matcha, the pono potions specialty flavored syrups are the best complement to their richly flavored matcha. Their Hapa Matcha (available in the larger size only) was what I tried. It features honey liliko'i (passion fruit) syrup, whole milk, and local honey macnut-pineapple cold foam. You could taste all of the flavors! Such a unique tropical matcha that you can't get anywhere else. I drank it so fast... A few tables in the main area and the connecting side area, with cool displays of goods by local vendors (jewelry, bags, etc.) Great for sitting to hang out with friends. It was honestly one of the best matchas I've ever had in HI. Their pricing isn't too bad but not the cheapest. We got their lilikoi matcha (Hapa Honey Matcha), which was my first time trying it, and it was really good! It's definitely on the sweeter side, though, so just a heads-up if you don't like sweet drinks. For me, it was the perfect amount of sweetness because it wasn't overly sweet. I also loved that they do a little writing design on top of the drink using honey. I thought that was such a cute and unique touch! We also tried the Matcha Manako because it has li hing mango syrup, which we had never seen before. This one was less sweet but still really delicious! My friend also got their tonic drink, but unfortunately, we weren't really fans of it. The flavors didn't mix well together for us, so I wouldn't get that one again. I also like that they sell their own syrups that you can use to make your own drinks at home. I ended up buying their honey lilikoi syrup to bring home because I liked the drink so much. The syrup itself isn't very sweet. I've used it multiple times at home to make my own matcha, and it's been great! They have plenty of indoor seating, and it's not too loud, so I'd say it's a nice spot to hang out or get some work done. The staff is also very friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I also loved that they sell bouquets there, and they were all so pretty! I highly recommend checking this place out if you're in the area!

I was finally able to try this place due to an invite from a friend of mine who wanted high tea…read moreservice! Parking is always difficult in Chinatown but we both scored meter parking on Nuuanu St not too far from 1024. Walked in and was pleasantly surprised by how cute and kitschy the place looked! There was a group of 3 adorable little girls being patiently taught by a parent how to sip their tea and enjoy the courses. They were dressed like princesses with tiaras and I loved that this place created that type of atmosphere. I wish I had dressed up more! You get to choose your own tea cup and matching plate from various areas and chose one tea that they will refill throughout the tea service. I opted for the Buckingham Palace (Earl Grey and rose?) I think. Would love to try their pu'erh tea options next time! The lunch menu for afternoon tea is so reasonably priced and starts with a salad, two flavors of scones with sweetened clotted cream and a strawberry jam, then 6 finger sandwiches and 3 dessert bites. I will say that the food was a relatively even hit or miss on taste but I did prefer the savory sandwiches to the final dessert options. It's heavy on the carbs but that's afternoon tea for you! Such a fun option in Hawaii if you want to lean into the whimsy and magic of tea time!

My teenage daughter and their friends love this place. They have been here a few times for…read moredifferent occasions, like birthdays. Each time was a very nice experience. Unlike coffee shops, where food and drinks are purchased a la carte, tea service here is a set menu of tea, salad, sandwiches, scones and sweets. The menu can be modified for vegetarians, gluten free, etc. Of course, there's a wide selection of teas to choose from. My daughter's favorite is the sakura cherry rose. She is not a big eater, so the amount of food was more than enough for her. Normally, she can be a picky eater, but maybe the uniqueness and specialness of the place and occasion encouraged her to be open-minded to new things -- and she genuinely enjoyed everything she tried. Staff was especially welcoming and friendly. Located in Chinatown (Nuuanu street) so parking can be a hassle. If you're lucky, you might find street parking. Otherwise, there are a couple municipal parking lots nearby.
