Very disappointed of the change. Honu used to be one of our go-to places in Rowland Heights. We've been plenty of times and we'd get the short ribs and the teriyaki chicken or beef ribs depending on what I'm craving. Onto our food -- the chicken was lacking flavor, I'd rather go to Ono Hawaiian BBQ which has way more flavor. The salad changed from shredded cabbage to mixed greens. The beef short ribs are much thinner and no longer pre-cut. The teriyaki sauce is worse too - thick sauce, vinegar/sour flavor -- not sure if it's gone bad but definitely not the thin teriyaki flavor sauce they used to have. I cannot comment on the beef ribs as we did not order it but it seems everything went downhill and I would not recommend this place anymore. I honestly don't know why it took me so long to try Honu Hawaiian BBQ given how close I live to here! Not gonna lie, this is easily some of the best Hawaiian food that I've had that wasn't from the actual Hawaiian islands. Ordered a beef rib plate with a half portion of chicken katsu on top. Those beef ribs were absolutely spectacular! Unlike a lot off the Hawaiian BBQ restaurants that barely give you scraps off the beef ribs, these legitimately had a lot of beef on the bone. Plus the marinade was amazing! And yeah it's really hard to mess up chicken katsu. Thankfully, they got it on point. Staff here were super duper friendly! The food is worth the weight. I've had Hawaiian barbecue from many different places and typically the chicken cutlet is always semi-dry. Here we ordered the chicken, cutlet, beef, ribs, garlic, shrimp, and KBBQ3 bone rib ribs. Each and every dish was spectacular. The beef ribs super soft and it came with three meaty ribs. Garlic shrimp with the shell was crunchy and delicious. The most surprising was the chicken cutlet and it was very juicy and tender. We got the galbi short rib plate and added half an order of the garlic shrimp. The galbi was very soft and perfectly marinated. The garlic shrimp is deep fried with the shell on giving it a nice crispy texture and packed with fried garlic. Our total came out to be shy of $30 which I felt was a bit pricey for the amount of food. The bed of rice it came with was smaller compared to other places we tried. Ahhhhh-mazing!! Hubby and I were in the area and stumbled across this Hawaiian joint. Located inside an adorable food court, we were hesitant because it was cold out and it seemed like there was only outdoor seating however, they have indoor seating also (yaaaay!). My first visit to this restaurant was about the same time in December but over a year ago, so I knew it was going to be at least decent when it popped up as the choice from our weekly lunch roulette. It's located within Yes Plaza, so loads of parking, but not necessarily GREAT parking, the spots are smaller than normal and the light posts between the rows of parking do take up a significant chunk of one of the spots, so don't get too excited when you see an empty spot that no one has taken yet when it's busy. Amongst the many identical glass storefronts of Yes Plaza, this one is an easier one to find, it's in the back corner, one of the few stores that have a fake city building facade. You actually can't miss it. Service was nice and helpful, letting us know that down two storefronts is an indoor eating area with tables. Very useful for us since it was raining that day. Tables were also available outside. We ordered the Beef Rib ($18) and the Galbi plates ($19). The wait wasn't long but it also wasn't quick. The restaurant has a website you can order from so next time if I know I'm going there, I'd place my order while I was on the way driving there. Portions are great. The meat was cooked well. The meat didn't need too much gnawing or effort to get it off the bone and there's a large amount of salad to cut through all the meat that they give. The chicken was nothing to rave about as it's cooked pretty plain (sauce was provided on the side), but the beef rib is where it's at - a definite must order as the meat was truly fall off the bone tender and came with about 4 bones; absolutely divine! Each comes with two scoops of rice, two scoops mac salad, and a cabbage salad with side sesame dressing. There are a couple different side substitutions available, some free and some with an additional fee (e.g., extra scoop of mac w/ no cabbage is an extra $0.75). The food here is amazing!! Korean and hawaiin fusion makes a fantastic combo. Not your typical hawaiin plate here. I have tried their kalbi plate which has all the flavors you'd expect from kalbi with the hawaiin bbq fixings. My brother got their spicy pork amd he said it was really good. They give a decent amount of food but everything is so expensive, especially for a place lunch. The sauce they give you with the chicken dishes was not teriyaki. Not sure what it has in it but it was sour and off putting. I asked for the ingredients of the Mac salad. They couldn't tell me what was in it but said it had heavy cream? Seems to be a very unusual ingredient to have in Mac salad? The cabbage salad didn't come with dressing so it was just plain. We were interested in getting the spam musubi but they couldn't tell us why the rice looked orange so we didn't get it.
