I love Honu Hawaiian BBQ! Anytime my hubby and I are craving a good crispy sushi roll, this is our go-to spot. The portions are great. I usually get the chicken teriyaki mini meal, which comes with rice and macaroni salad, and it always hits the spot and is very filling. The shrimp and french fries are good too. The service is pretty fast, so it's easy to walk in or order ahead if you're in a rush. It's a small, quaint spot on the corner with a cozy feel. Their menu is easy to read while ordering is straightforward with the super friendly cashier. We ordered the beef and short rib combo substituting the Mac for a side salad. Typical Hawaiian portions can usually feed two people and Honu portions don't disappoint. The quality of meat is on the fatty side and the rice & salad are solid but basic. I've been coming here for years. Their food is always perfect. I get the family meal and mix and match. It's the best bargain. This time I got Mahi-mahi, short ribs and chicken. In the past I've also enjoyed their chicken katsu and their bbq beef. Mac salad and rice are good. But for me, I drive all the way out here for the cabbage. You just don't get that at the other Hawaiian bbq spots. And if you do get it, it's undercooked. Here the cabbage is perfectly steamed and it's usually underneath the chicken and beef, so it soaks up all those juices. Service has always been fast. I usually order ahead. I have never eaten inside, but it looks clean. It's a sit and eat fast type of place. Oh I forgot to mention. The have some sushi stuff going on too. I don't go to this location that much anymore because there are other Hawaiian bbq spots nearby and their service isn't that good, but when I do I would get their chicken katsu. They give a good amount of chicken and it is very crispy, but the meat is thin. Sometimes I get scared it is not cooked all the way because the meat would be a little pink. They are also stingy with their sauce now. They used to have a self serve katsu sauce station a few years ago. They only give one little container of katsu sauce now, which is not enough. Service is okay because the people who take the orders are not that friendly. It felt a little gloomy in the store because they do not have much lighting and it was empty during lunch time. Always a quick fix go to spot for me and my family. They're quick, food is freshly made per order, and clean overall. They allow you to order for pickup which is so nice. Been coming for years and slowly the prices keep going up but they do pack up your order pretty full. The mini meals are no longer worth it, just get the full meal if anything. The cashier tried to scam me. I ordered three pieces of chicken katsu, and the total with tax was $13.05, as shown on my receipt. However, I was charged $20.21. I didn't notice the discrepancy until I received a notification from my bank shortly thereafter. When I returned to pick up my order, I confronted her, she initially claimed that I had ordered four pieces. I insisted that I only ordered three, and even if I had ordered four, it still wouldn't have totaled $20.21. Then, she quickly took the receipt from my hand and said she had given me the wrong one. She printed out another receipt, but it was exactly the same--a total of $13.05 and the same order number! I pointed out that it was the same receipt, and she insisted it was different because "a customer called earlier." This was clearly dishonest! All I'm saying is that it's unacceptable, I mean really for a few bucks?? So be cautious if you ever order from there. read more

I have been coming to this location for years! I usually order for pick up which takes about 10 minutes most of the time. The only reason I give this review 3 stars and not 4 is due to the food being pretty average, its not bad but not the best. I often get a great tasting sushi roll, while at other times its a bit dry and lacks some flavor. Although, its a great spot to come and get a quick bite at, my favorite has to be their Dragon roll! I have also tried their Chicken Katsu which is also not bad, that comes with the chicken, lettuce, rice, and macaroni salad. If you are looking to sit down they do have quite a few booths and tables, they are usually empty and pretty quiet as I believe most order to go. I also believe this is one of the few Hawaiian BBQ's that have sushi on the menu. I always enjoy their food. Especially since they cook their cabbage! That's my favorite part about Hawaiian bbq. The service is always fast and the price is always on point! $8 and I can have a dinner for two. I need to one day try their other options such as sushi but haven't got there yet. Not sure I recommend the burger special. Bought this once out of curiosity and it tasted like a $4 which is what you pay for and the fries were super soggy and greasy. They have a sign with a photo of cheeseburger and fries meal for $3.59 right outside their door but it rings up $4.69 before taxes (yes it's only a $1.10 difference but every penny counts); false advertisement is a huge no for me because they should honor what they promote. We were in Elk Grove and wanted a quick bite to eat. We were headed somewhere else for a burger but smelled the delicious aroma coming out of Honu Hawaiian BBQ and changed our mind. At first I was a little skeptical when looking at the Yelp reviews but I was glad we did. The girl at the counter was polite and even though there were quite a few people in line it went quick and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. The BBQ chicken was very tender, almost fat free and had a really good smoked BBQ flavor. The Chicken Katsu was crispy, tender and had a hint of ginger which was to our liking. The macaroni salad was good and different with the wide noodles. There was enough food for us to split the one dish and we would eat there again if ever in the area. read more
