The portions were huge, didn't think the appetizer would be that big. Great for the price! We ordered the nachos for appetizer and for entree, the brisket, the house special sausages, Mac and cheese, and grilled cheese with brisket. Didn't make it to the food today Been a customer for many years. Three years ago moved around the corner. Usually do take out. Large take out orders. Because the place usually IS packed - except at certain hours. Today I just wanted a sandwich and a beer for late lunch - during their slow time. Dining Room was basically empty just after 1:30 on a Friday afternoon except for the bar - not surprising given the hour and the day Asked where I wanted to sit I responded a high top at the bar if there were any free. First time here. Have wanted to try Hoodoo's for awhile so excited to finally go. Friday night and was seated right away. Forgot servers name but she was pleasant. Explained to us "first timers" the menu. We ordered every app they had except the jar of bacon which they were out of Wings: excellent!! That hint of smokiness was just enough to make these arguably top 3 in the area. And they were not dry! Nachos: had them with the pork and again a winner. Not skimpy with the toppings and put together correctly Brussels were also a winner. Poutine was average but still flavor-flavorsble. Did not order any of the individual meats but did have the Brisket grillled cheese and it was as delicious as it sounds. Mac and cheese also was very good! Here are 2 small things I would suggest to the owners 1. Corn bread. While good, it needs to be served with a little butter or hot honey on the side. When you roll up into the small car lot, the wafts of meat, grill, grease, spices and smoke flavors are already floating your way. Before you make it to Hoodoo, your mouth waters. The meats at this road-stop are so fine and juicy and succulent. The sides were delicious and heaped up high - finally a place that doesn't 'inflation-gouge' the nation! When they're good, they're good. But more than occasionally, they aren't. It's annoying because you never know what you're going to get. If they serve you from the middle of the brisket, it's nice and tender & juicy. But more than occasionally they will give you edges or parts which are dry and overcooked. If you're looking for some of the best barbecue in CT, look no further! Hoodoo Brown's is seriously amazing! Here's the scoop: There's a front and rear parking lot but both are small. They don't take reservations unless you have a party of ten or more, and you can't call ahead. And this place gets BUSY. If you're going on a weekend night, I'd recommend getting there before 5:30PM to beat the dinner rush. I recently went on a Saturday night and arrived around 5:15PM. Although busy, there was no wait for a table and I was seated promptly. To drink I ordered the Sweet Peach Iced Tea, which was very good. For an appetizer, I ordered the BBQ Nachos. Now I'm not joking when I say these were literally the best nachos I've ever had! They come with your choice of brisket or pulled pork (I chose pulled pork), topped with beans, jalapeños, guacamole, sour cream, and their signature cheese sauce. Unlike most other restaurants, they use cheese sauce instead of shredded cheese, and it's absolutely delicious! There was a slightly sweet taste to the nachos, and I'm not sure if it was due to the beans or the cheese sauce, but whatever it was, it added to the deliciousness. I also liked how they didn't give you an excessive pile of chips. It was just the right amount so you got some of the toppings with every bite. For my meal, I ordered the Half-Rack of BBQ Pork Spare Ribs. These were EXCELLENT! They smoke their meats for up to 24-hours, and these ribs literally fell right off the bone. The BBQ sauce (there's a bottle on every table that you can add) was awesome, and added amazing flavor. I also liked that it wasn't spicy at all (some restaurants have barbecue sauce that's on the spicier side, which I'm not a fan of). Keep in mind that these are full spare ribs, not baby back, so even a half-rack is a lot of meat! I also got a side of cornbread, which was very good. For dessert, I ordered the Fried Oreos, which came with three deep-fried Oreos and vanilla ice cream. These were also excellent! The waitress was super attentive and efficient. This restaurant was great for dining in. My party of 2 came on a Thursday evening and it was busy but still with seating available. We waited less than 5 minutes to be seated. There is a wide selection of bbq meats/cuts available. My personal favorite was the pork ribs. It was juicy and the white bone was soft enough to chew through. Each piece was huge and well worth the money. We also tried their wings and brisket and a jalapeño sausage. The wings were delicious when hot but as it cooled down, it would taste a little drier. The brisket was very tender and some parts would melt in your mouth. The jalapeño sausage was flavorful and tasted homemade. For sides, we got fries, coleslaw, and cornbread. I would not recommend the cornbread as it is dry but you get a huge piece for what you're paying for. The fries were okay and a bit salty for my personal taste. The coleslaw was a good balance to all the meats. The slaw was more acidic tasty than the typical creamy Mayo base so it was different. The servers were so nice and attentive! They constantly asked how we were doing with a smile on their face. This restaurant as of when I visited in March 2022, did not check for vaccination cards. Hoodoo Brown's is a real treat, and one of the better smokehouses we've been to, in both execution and ambiance. You truly feel as if you've been transported to the South, and the vibes are a perfect accompaniment to the meal. For an appetizer, we ordered the Jar o'Bacon ($13) which came in a jar, hot, and dripping (literally) onto the table with flavor. It was obviously JUST taken out of the smoker and was bursting with salty flavor and incredible tenderness. Portion-wise it was just right for two people, not too thick, and not too excessive in any way. We ordered a selection of meats to try and one side. We got 2 Tex Mex sausage links ($9 each), a half pound of pork belly ($16), a full rack of pork spare ribs ($45), and a side of seasoned fries ($7). The sausage was perfection (aside from being warm instead of hot, perhaps it sat for a bit before being served) in texture and flavor, impeccably juicy and with an exciting kick. The spare ribs were beautifully flavored and glazed lightly with a barbecue sauce, without making for an overly messy handling, and the meat was tender. That being said, they might have been a tad over-trimmed and underseasoned and could have done with a little more of the succulent meat and fat left on, for a thicker layer above the bone. The pork belly was nicely crispy, but not quite as juicy as I expected and have had before, but overall nicely done. The fries were crispy but salted a bit unevenly. Our waitress was incredibly proactive and personable and made sure we had to-go boxes without even needing to ask and took our dessert orders. We got a Bourbon Banana Cream Pie ($10) and an order of Fried Oreos with Ice Cream ($10). The pie was creamy and delicious, and flavored nicely, though the crust was a tad too crumbly and fell apart fairly easily. The fried Oreos were a treat, though could have done with slightly thinner dough, but the ice cream was rich and decadent. This place is overrated. Service was just ok. The table is set with nothing. You get a pile of plates and wrapped up silverware to distribute among the diners. When did we all agree to set our own table anyway? Waitress was pleasant and attentive. but it really frosts me when the "server" shows up with the entree and the apps were never cleared. Been wanting to eat at this place for so long it became a battle. Im not from the area but I must have traveled to this rather remote spot of western CT about three or four other times and couldn't even find a spot to park. Finally I got a chance to check it out right at opening on a Sunday. I've always had a feeling that this place would rock my world and be one of the true BBQ gems of New England. Just had that ring to it "HooDoo Brown BBQ" with their smokers right out front, nestled nicely in the hills of western CT. After finally trying it I can say it is absolutely a BBQ gem ... but I think there is a lack of "special" taste. I only give 5 stars to place that have this "It" factor, a thing that makes it a real special experience to be their customer. And although HooDoo is great BBQ, great atmosphere, great menu .... it just didn't really have anything that said "you can't find this anywhere else". I know a lot of people will disagree with me and I completely understand where they are coming from and they might be right. But hey ... it's not like my review is going to make or break them ... they are doing beyond fine without me. First off, I guess HooDoo Brown was a real outlaw cowboy figure, why it's named after him I don't know but again, got that nice ring to it. Half rack of spare ribs cost about as much as a full rack most other places I go. $21 for a half rack. $39 for a full. I know meat prices are crazy right now so no big deal. Also the issue of 24 hour smoking process. I think most places do like 8 or 12 hours. Whether or not its true, I can see why the price is high. Anyways. Ribs were pretty darn good, glazed over, great smoke ring, good flavor. Only complaint I guess I had was the texture. Meat could be a bit juicier and soft. Brisket was pretty good too. Great brisket rub and traditional beef smoked flavor. Never been a huge fan of the thin sliced though. Id rather they just do the one slice as thick as the 2 or 3 they gave me. Again, texture and moistness could have been better. Fat didn't have any flavor to it and didn't melt too well. Hate to say it but Im pretty sure these meats have been sitting out for a bit. Sliced smoked Turkey was pretty good, hard to screw that up, just a little cold if anything. Mac and Cheese was big shell pasta with cheese goop and maybe a sprinkle of sumptin red, maybe a paprika, idk. Not impressed. Baked beans were EXCELLENT! Besides the beans I think the best part of the meal was the random overflow of pickles on my platter. Idk if it's always like that but DAMN I think we had about half a jar on our tray. I just love pickles, pairs so damn well with BBQ. All the desserts sound amazing, especially the BANANA BOURBON CREAM PIE! ... Which they DIDN'T HAVE THAT DAY! I was pissed. Had to go for the s'mores ice cream cake. Never had so much sugar in my life. I guess the owner's mother makes all the desserts at home and brings them in when she's done? I came here with my wife on a Thursday evening not too long after opening. The restaurant is nice and charming and the smell of a smoker adds great ambience to the front lot! I am a third-generation Texan raised in the South and a bit of a barbecue enthusiast so since we were nearby I was excited to try. We ordered the Texas poutine, 1 lb of the Thursday Prime Rib special, 1/2 lb of brisket, one link of jalapeno cheddar sausage and one link of their weekly special brisket boudin sausage, and a side of collard greens. Poutine is my favorite food aside from brisket, and the combination of the two was insanely amazing; smoky, salty (not too salty), savory, just great! The prime rib was absolutely fabulous, definitely some of the best I've ever had, and the horseradish sauce had the exact right amount of kick to it. The brisket was good, it passed the ultimate Texas test and had great hang to it, and it had great smoky flavor! The jalapeno cheddar sausage was fantastic; my only two critiques were that the greens were good, but could use a little bit more spice (not *heat*, but spice); and the brisket boudin was quite dry (I am also a boudin enthusiast from growing up on the River across from Louisiana and I think the issue is it was low on the fat content, but Isaac Toups has a great YouTube video on making boudin if you want the 411). TL;DR Fabulous food and great service in a very cozy dinner spot, only drawback is that there is very little parking and the nearby businesses seem intent on threatening to tow anybody who parks there, so be prepared for a bit of a parking dilemma if you want their fantastic food! read more

I ordered The Battle of Ridgefield sandwich- it comes with Brisket, crispy pork belly, apple vinegar slaw. They ran out of pork belly so the waitress suggested I sub it with bacon instead. When I received the sandwich it came without the apple vinegar slaw. I asked the waitress and she said they ran out but she could give me a side of regular coleslaw. Prior to the pandemic we went often - it's about a 45-50 minute ride and parking isn't easy but the food was phenomenal. On our recent visit like so many places prices have shot up - an appetizer (poutine), a sandwich (make ur own brisket), two desserts a seltzer water and an ice tea was $60 before tip. For really good or phenomenal food I wouldn't have thought twice but I have to say this meal was average. The meat was tender but not a lot of flavor and the poutine was light on cheese and meat. The desserts were very good. Service was good and it was fast. The kid walking around the the jug around his neck collecting money for a charity felt a little over the top - thankfully he wasn't our waiter. Ok look, I'm gonna be real with y'all. Let's start with the facts. The only thing you need to get from here is the brisket nachos and the pastrami. The brisket itself and jalapeno cheddar sausages are also pretty good, but the pastrami is intensely juicy and perfect in ways I didn't think pastrami could be, and I'm a pastrami snob, so I know what I'm talking about. The crackling pork belly is also very nice. One of the few places I've been that actually knows how to cook pork belly the right way. Perfectly crispy. Would recommend. The cornbread is trash. It's dry, tasteless, too thick, not served warm, and worst of all, came with no butter or any kind of spread. Where's the maple butter? The honey butter? The any butter? I had to ask for butter, and they were kind enough to dice it, but it was hard as a rock because it was cold. The cornbread itself needs another egg or more butter in the recipe, otherwise, it's not worth ordering. Keeping with the corn trend, do.not.get.the.cajun.corn.on.the.cob. it is garbage. No flavor, maybe a little bit of salt, and the corn they served us was not the sweet variety, or the having taste variety. Hated it. Would never order again. On the other side of things, the brisket nachos are a golden gift from the palaces of heaven. The cheese sauce really carries here, but the brisket propels the nachos into the permanent halls of legendary eats. Bacon in a jar is overpriced, but it is good. 7/10, would not order again simply based on the $10 pricetag. The $45 beef rib is not at all worth it. It's tender, it looks pretty, it's smoked and seasoned well, but it's absolutely not a strong representation of what this place is good at. Skip the Mac and cheese. Tasteless, breadcrumbless, spiral boringness, nonsense. Nobody at our table enjoyed it. The pit beans are pretty solid, but not as sweet as you might expect them to be. Collard greens were decent, but too much pulled pork in there with them that manages to mask the otherwise nice taste of the collards. They have two varieties of potato side dishes. The waitress didn't know the difference, so we got both. "Interstellar potatoes" are just sliced potatoes with some sauteed onions. Pretty boring. Potato salad also fell flat. Not enough vinegar to balance it. Deviled eggs are also good, but Iikely because the brisket is so damn yummy. The Holy Trinity Bloody Mary is a gimmick. $25 for a bloody with a rib, piece of sausage, and a slice of brisket. Looks pretty in pictures, and the bloody mix ain't bad. Little thick for my tastes, but decent. Smoked maple old fashioned also nice, but the whiskey or maple or smoke they are using is lazily selected or combined, because it also has a muted flavor when compared to other smoked old fashioneds I've had. Dessert: the s'mores ice cream cake is good. I'd get it again. Be careful when ordering, the waitress brought me two items that were incorrect, and forgot one item entirely, also forgot to remove one item from the receipt that she said she would, but she was polite and seemed very busy. I was invited here for a friends birthday lunch, but was actually excited for it after having heard so many good reviews. I will say I was not disappointed! Since there were 8 of us we had a whole room off to the side to ourselves. Our waitress was fabulous and so helpful with explaining menu items. Drinks were all unique and really fit into the BBQ theme. I did not eat one thing that was bad! From the poutine fries, to the sandwiches and sides I was super satisfied with all the options. One thing was as good as the other and I left stuffed! Prices were reasonable as well, especially for the large portions. I will definitely be back! Waited hour and a half only to find out no pork belly, pork ribs that we wanted to order. We then ordered the beef ribs but then the waitress came back and said they are out of that too . Sides were ok except the Brussel Sprouts had only crispy shells dunked in very sweet syrup. It was like a leftover scrapped together :( Sangria was the worst I had in years. Understanding their specialty is bbq ribs, I will have to go back and give it a try one more time. Two stars for good service not so much the food. read more

Best chicken wings. The bbq wings are to die for. We normally would order togo. It's a crowd pleaser. We like the brisket as well however sometimes it can get a little bit dry. read more

I'm so glad we decided to come to this place the BBQ was awesome. The wait is worth the time because the food is really good and best of all seasoned perfect. The rack of ribs are cooked to perfection and along with the sides I was in heaven. The staff is really friendly and even the owner came to our table and chatted with us. We were so lucky to get the room for our party of 8 people which made the experience even better. I really love the place definitely will make the 45 minute trek from the Bronx to get some good BBQ. read more
