We had an incredible meal here this evening. The only things that could have improved it would have been less road noise from all the bikers going by, and the horrendous family sitting at the table next to us on the patio whose two small children kept coming over to bump into our table and run into the parking lot unchecked. We started with some cocktails and their pimento spread (complimentary) and the tuna poke. I don't think I've ever had poke without something to eat it with, but the crumble of panko gave it nice texture and it was delicious. Then we had shrimp and grits (without sausage), bouillabaisse, she-crab soup, the wedge, and fish bites. Everyone loved everything. We finished with a peach dumpling, Creme brûlée, and the skillet chocolate chip cookie. Overall everything was perfect and the service was excellent. Highlight: BOURBON BACON! . The bourbon bacon is to die for, it's an 11/10 and our table of 3 ordered two of these because we couldn't get enough! However, sadly, the rest of the dishes we ordered were not worth the price and we were extremely dissapointed. We ordered the peel shrimp 1lb, oysters, seared scallops, and shrimp & grits. The shrimp was over cooked and we had such a hard time peeling the outer layer. Oysters were bland and gritty, they weren't cleaned fully. The shrimp & grits and scallops were hard to get through due to the taste. Onto the service, our server was very friendly and had the southern hospitality charm but she was constantly trying to up-sell us on ordering more food because the more we order = more tip. If we don't want to order a drink or dessert, we should not feel guilted about it. We understood the hustle and tipped well regardless but it came off as dis-in genuine and left a bad taste in our mouth. Overall, I would come back again just to eat the bacon. Period. read more

A truly stellar restaurant. One of the best in the area for dinner service. We had 6 people in our party and were seated promptly, even on a weekend. Service was top notch. Cocktails were great. Food was out of this world! Everyone loved the candied bacon and it's presentation. Crab soup was great and rich. I had the surf and surf with scallops and salmon- the sauces here made this 10x better. This is a place that respects their patrons and strives to deliver incredible results- down to the jacket for the lemon so you don't get seeds on your food. I want to try everything! Ate here twice this week on our trip to MB because it was just that good! First time we went with a large group, and it was a lovely experience. We started off with charcuterie and 20 pieces of the bourbon glazed bacon for the table. It came presented on a large metal fish with the bacon strips hanging throughout its belly. It was epic! Wish we had gotten a picture, but it was too good and went quickly! They also bring house made crisps and pimento cheese. I am gluten free, so they also brought out a tray with toasted gluten free bread which was tasty! They are very accommodating with food allergies. I am gluten and dairy free and they were helpful in discussing my allergies. The second time we dined (just the two of us) our waiter, (I think his name was DG) thoroughly went through each ingredient in the meal I chose to make sure I wouldn't have any issues. In fact, the second he greeted us at the table he asked about allergies and made a note of it. I really appreciated his thoroughness! DG also recommended the Carolina Lemonade (I was trying to decide between two cocktails) and it was delightful. As far as food goes, the first night I had the cioppino which flavorful with succulent shrimp, mussels, and white fish. My husband had the seared scallops which he said were some of the best he has had. The second night I had the crab cakes (egg and Mayo used as a binder-- gluten free!!) which were full of sweet crab meat, a bit of a bit to them, and nicely browned and crisped. My husband had the beef short rib which he said was delectable as well. This will definitely become a regular place to visit here in myrtle beach. Great concept, decor/ambiance, staff, and food. Had a big meal here for 9 family members. Got the seafood tower for 4 and fish bites. The tower was amazing. See the pictures. I also got a wedge salad, which was good too. For entry I got the shrimp Alfredo. Nothing too special. I should have picked something more seafood focused and not a pasta dish. The deserts were great too. I got an Irish coffee that really hit the spot. Everyone was happy with their meal and their fancy drinks! We did not make reservations (Get a reservation) so we had to wait on available seating. The staff was very pleasant helpful on this busy Thursday. We didn't know how long the wait would be so we asked about drinks. Thw bar was completely filled but this location has an area specifically for walk up drink service. I began with an HB Old Fashioned, with the glazed bacon 10 out of 10. My wife ordered two floral drinks which she fell in love with. For appetizers I picked the Bourbon Bacon and my wife tried the She Crab Soup. This is a great date night combo if you are in a sharing mood. You get a large portion of bacon and the perfect amount of soup. At this point everything was great, this place has a nice mellow vibe that was unbeaten. For the main course I had to try the beef short rib with mashed potatoes and greens. The beef and brown gravy was delicious and the meat was so tender fell off the fork. My wife had the mahi-mahi, which was on special for the day, which was season with a subtle yet bold, coffee seasoning.The bill ended up in the mid 200s but it was so worth it. Went with several of my golf buddies and we all liked it. The She Crab soup was delicious and we also had the peel and eat shrimp for the table. My husband and I came off a recommendation and we're glad we did. The food was amazing! We ordered the seafood tower, crab cakes to share and triple chocolate mousse cake to go. The seafood tower was an appetizer that we basically could've just ordered as our meal. However, I recommend maybe for a nicer dinner. Wow! My boyfriend and I tried this place on a whim during a recently trip to Myrtle Beach. Easily the best meal we had while visiting. The tuna with coconut pineapple rice and wasabi cream was incredible. I begged for the rice recipe! My bf had the chicken and loves it. Tender and juicy with a rich au jus. She crab soup easily the worst I've had. Only definable ingredient were vegetables. Which are not part of the recipe. No distinguishing crab meat, no lovely sherry. Truly bad. No roe from a she crab which gives the soup its name. Main course stuffed flounder. Hard to get a bite of fish, most of the offering was a multi ingredient stuffing- it was flavorless. I'm a big flounder lover, this dish was so disappointing. My family has raved about this place, maybe just a bad night. For years, Hook & Barrel has been our favorite restaurant for creative, high quality food. The ambience is fabulous, the service top-notch. However, our recent experience was absolutely awful! When an established restaurant has a great reputation, like Hook & Barrel, patrons expect the same quality whether it's for a party of 2 or 13 diners. Our group of 13 was surprised to be seated in the far back room on the Croissants side of the building. The room was generic, completely lacking any ambience, barring a large flat screen TV hanging on the wall and three animal print fabric screens on another wall. Music being piped in was very LOUD rock that made conversation impossible. A few minutes after being seated another large group of 12 was seated behind us. Wow! Way to make ALL of us feel jammed away to the rear in a noisy space without much regard. When one of our party asked the manager to turn down the music so we could hear, it was done begrudgingly and not enough. When one of our group inquired why we were put in "the back room" he was told by the same manager, "That's where we put all the large groups." We had made our reservation 3 months in advance so there was plenty of time to organize seating in the restaurant we thought we were going to. Our waitress never came to see if anyone wanted another beverage or how our meals were. Three people ordered salmon and one serving was completely raw in the center. One entree was cold. If you're still reading this, you can probably guess 13 people won't be coming back. Ever. What a shame since really great restaurants are in short supply in our area. But we'll find a new favorite place to celebrate our special occasions. read more

The food timing was spot on and our drinks never emptied. We enjoyed the fish bites starter and then had the stuffed flounder and swordfish special. If I could give this place 6 stars, I would! My wife and I had a great time and everything was amazing from the moment we walked into the door from the ambiance, the food, and the service. The She Crab Soup surprised us as we were intending to share it but as soon as I had the first taste, I knew she would want to order her own. They were quite fast at bringing another portion. The bourbon bacon looked tiny at first until we took them down from the rack. These were nice thick pieces, and quite filling. We decided to be adventurous and go for the Seafood Tower and was not disappointed. Everything tasted fresh, and admittedly we were a little exasperated at the thought of having to shuck our own lobster after a long day, but the waitress told us not to worry about it brought in their expert whom took care of it for us. The place is pricy but you're definitely getting your money's worth in terms of quality. Of all the places we visited so far in Myrtle Beach, this one is topping my "must-return" list. read more

The fish was dry, they didn't pay attention to the reservation stating that my husband had a nut allergy, and we just weren't that impressed overall. The atmosphere is nice enough, but l'll just hit up a good dive bar for some decent oysters and fresh fish next time and spend a fraction of the price.
