They have a few tables at the front but most of their tables are in the back patio area which is nicely covered giving a pretty cool kickback vibe. Service was pretty quick once we got our order in. The food was amazing. Chicken and Kalbi were definitely one of our favorites. And the bone marrow with the cheese! Each plate is sharing size so definitely bring some friends! read more

I was craving fried chicken on Sunday and originally planned to go to San Tung, but they were completely packed with about 20 parties on the waitlist. We ended up here instead. The restaurant is small, with a few tables in the front and a heated patio in the back. We chose the patio and stayed comfortable throughout the meal. We ordered the beef short ribs, pork belly, seafood pancake, and chicken wings (half honey butter and half ginger sesame soy). The beef short ribs were the standout of the meal, tender, flavorful, and perfectly balanced between savory, sweet, and smoky. Unfortunately, the other dishes were less impressive. The pork belly was sliced too thin, causing most of the fat to render out on the grill and leaving it a bit dry. The seafood pancake was too thick and heavy on the batter, making it soft and doughy inside when I would have preferred a crispier texture. The chicken wings were just okay. The honey butter flavor wasn't evenly coated, so I mostly tasted sweetness rather than the rich buttery flavor I was expecting. The ginger sesame soy wings were also underwhelming. I couldn't really taste any ginger, and the sauce was applied too heavily, making the flavor overly thick and unbalanced. Another surprise was the limited selection of banchan. They only offered four varieties, which is the fewest I've seen at a Korean restaurant. Service was okay, nothing particularly memorable, but no complaints either. I really like supporting neighborhood restaurants and have been wanting to dine at Um Ma for a long time, so I organized a group dinner here. Each person ordered whatever he/she felt like eating and a group of us shared a large order of their KFC. Everything was good, but my sul lang tang could have used more seasoning; the depth of flavor just wasn't there for me. Since a whole group of us ordered one platter of wings, I didn't really get a chance to taste the different sauces they offered; truth be told, I'm not even sure which sauce was on my piece! Since we were a group, we sat at the communal table in the Mural Room. As it turned out, it really isn't a "room" but just a space with two communal tables. It was just inside the back patio, and since the patio doors remained open, it was rather chilly. It was okay, but the table that was said to be able to handle ten diners was very crowded with just nine of us. Fortunately for me, I was on the bench with only three others; the five on the other side of the table kept hitting elbows! I wish for nothing but success for Um Ma, and judging by the crowd of diners on that Friday, it should be achievable. I think for myself, though, it'll be awhile before I return. read more

We came here after discovering that Pàng, which just opened nearby and is so new it doesn't have times listed on Google Maps yet, is closed on Wednesdays. Anyways, Um Ma has been on my list of places to try, so it worked out. I got the bibimbap for my main course. It comes with veggies, purple rice, and an onsen egg in a hot stone bowl. It costs upwards of $5 to add any type of protein. I just got it as is without any additions. It arrived steaming hot, but the veggies were still crisp. It tasted very fresh. We also tried the seafood pancake, which I thought was just okay. It had more of a Japanese than Korean flavor since it came with fish flakes and a soy sauce based dip. Overall the food carried elements of California and Japanese fusion. The vibes were really nice here. Sitting on the back patio at picnic tables surrounded by trees, strings of lights, and space heaters, it felt like being in a ground-level treehouse. Service wasn't bad, but it felt a bit rushed. The place wasn't packed by any means so not sure what prompted the rush. Overall the food and vibes are good here, so I'm glad i got to check it out. Had such a great girls' dinner at Um.Ma in SF! I love that everything is served family-style, making it easy to try a little bit of everything. The house-made banchan were so fresh, especially the soy-marinated quail eggs--I'd come back just for those. Wow. We had such a good experience here last night. The 8 of us (two of which were toddlers) celebrated our birthdays here and couldn't be happier with the flavor and variety of food. Our waitress was Mikaela and she was wonderful and very helpful. We ordered a variety of dishes to share - Kalbi, japchae, cheese corn with bone marrow, marinated raw crab, 10 pieces of chicken wings, seafood pancake and rockin roe. We also had ban Chan consisting of broccoli, quail egg, pickled daikon and Kimchee. The quail egg and Brocolli was yummy! My favorite of all dishes was the marinated raw crab. It was in a sauce that I just loved, not too spicy and the crab was so tender. It was my first time eating crab raw and it was tender, flavorful and delicious. I wish they gave us crab crackers instead of scissors. The crab shell was hard and difficult to cut so I had to use my teeth to crack it. We asked for the seafood pancake to be crispy and they delivered. Everyone loved it although I thought it was a little too doughy for me and not enough seafood. The 1/2 honey and 1/2 soy chicken wings were just that. Very savory and crispy. The cheese corn with bone marrow mixed in was very different and we enjoyed that dish a lot. The toddlers loved the purple rice. We formed little balls of purple rice for them and they wouldn't eat their dinner because all they wanted was purple rice. There is nothing to write home about the japchae. The rock and roe looked amazing before we mixed it with the purple rice. I could just nibble on the topping. I think there was too much purple rice underneath so I couldn't enjoy all the roe when it was mixed together. The Kalbi priced at $40 for about 7 pieces was overpriced. It was tasty but that was too much money for so few pieces. Mikaela also offered us complimentary Soju for our birthdays. Our lychee soju carafe was sweet with a lot of ice. I think next time we will opt for a small bottle of peach soju. I also had a $10 coupon but forgot to use it. I heard a lot of good things about this place on TikTok so I thought my friends and I should give it a try. The scenery is definitely nice and the ambiance is very homey. However, the food was a bit pricey for the portion size. The employees were really nice but it took over 20 minutes to have our order taken and when we did we got drinks that didn't arrive until we already finished our almost 30 minutes later. We felt really bad sending them back but we didn't feel like drinking them anymore. Overall, the food quality was good and everyone was really sweet! We did a walk in on an early ish Sat and were promply seated in their back patio next to a heater (it was cold!). We tried two soju cocktails. They were way too sweet for us but still refreshing and fun to try something new. Since it was our first time trying Korean we had questions for our server and she helped us narrow down our choices. We wanted to try the Tteok-bokki since we had never had that before and one of their standard bibimbap dishes. We opted for beef but you can choose chicken. The Tteok-bokki arrived first. The server recommended we add cheese to it, so we did. This was very indulgent, spicy, piping hot and very comforting. It does start to get a bit redundant and hoped for more textures. The pickled items helped and we loved the quail eggs. The bibimbap with beef was delicious. We enjoyed it but only wish it came with more beef for the serving. The ratio seemed off. Having been here dozens of times over the years, Um Ma is an acceptable spot for patio Korean food with good vibes, especially on a warm day. Whether you are in Golden Gate Park or strolling through the sunset, it's conveniently located. Again, the vibes are good and the patio is a plus as it makes it dog friendly. Doesn't really feel like an authentic Korean place and it's a bit like they are trying too hard to be hip but maybe that's what sells. I recommend making reservations as it can get busy during prime time. The service is ... usually sub par. Even on our best visit, it was still lacking. I want to be charitable and assume they are just severely understaffed. You'll often have a hard time getting a hold of them and even if you do, expect to remind them multiple times for requests. They've made it so you can now order on your phone but for any special requests, it's the same issue. The food is pricey but a few of the dishes are actually worth it. Haven't visited in a while but apparently now they charge for extra banchan (side dishes)... what? I know times are tough but damn. While the patio atmosphere is nice and the location is convenient for many, there are better Korean spots even in SF (and much, much better in the Bay in general). Overall, the place is good but not great and while the atmosphere is lovely, things like the insufficient level of service and the inconsistent quality of the dishes makes it hard to make this a must visit for anyone. read more

My friend made a reservation for 6 people on a Saturday night with no problems. We got there and were seated in a back patio which was a bit enclosed and had heat lamps. Kimchi fried rice (3/5): The kimchi fried rice is cooked with purple rice instead of white rice which wasn't my favorite. The flavor was okay. Pork belly (4/5): Flavor was good, it was marinated with a citrus gochujang glaze. The portion was a bit small. It came with a housemead gochugaru paste. Tteokbokki (3/5): Not the best spicy rice cake I've had but the fish cakes were shaped like fish and that was the best part. Flavor was okay, not too spicy at all. Lychee lemonade (2/5): They had two separate drink menus and I wanted to try something. I don't know what is up with this but there was barely any ice so the drink was a bit warm once it melted? The lychee flavor was weak as well. Dalgona gelato (1/5): We had to end this dinner with a sweet treat but we were painfully disappointed. When it was served, it was already melted? It was not the consistency of any gelato I've ever had. It was like a melt soft serve. Basically ice cream soup. We ordered a different gelato too and it also came melted. So of course it was a special occasion! We came here to meet our longtime friend, whom we haven't seen in years! And he was back in town, and lucky for us, the little one was in school, and I was done with work, so we had a little freedom for change. I found this place on Yelp while searching for "Unique Restaurants." Saw that it was in the Inner Sunset where I used to live and not too far from our friend. On arrival, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a former Michelin spot, particularly in 2021. That felt like a score, because I had looked for other Michelin restaurants to eat at, but most were closed Mondays , so glad I found this one. I've heard that losing the star/rating doesn't mean a drop in quality, but more likely that the restaurant stopped paying the Michelin folks. Based on our experience here, I'm convinced that's the case. Of note, like most restaurants in the Inner Sunset, parking is horrible. Fortunately, it's very close to the entrance of Golden Gate Park, so we parked in that area, and simply walked what felt like less than a block down to the restaurant, We were seated out on the patio, which my wife immediately called "so cutesy." She loved the vibe, and I have to admit, it was pretty charming. Now onto the food: absolutely incredible! Every single dish was packed with bold, satisfying Korean flavor. Here's what we got: - Korean fried chicken: crispy, sweet, and came with a little Korean flag, which was a nice touch! - Kimchi fried rice: the Mrs. Favorite - Kalbi: Must have this at almost any Korean restaurant - Pork belly: Fatty and delicious - Charred Gai Lan: TBH, I've never been a fan of Gai lan, but this one really appealed to me it the sear and style that I've never had before - Seafood pancake: HUGE and scrumptious - Sundubu: warm and cozy for the weather Everything was done right. Portions were generous too. We definitely ordered more than three people could reasonably eat, but no regrets. Service was great as well. Our server was friendly and on top of filling our water/tea. Food came out quickly. We didn't get to see the bill because our friend graciously covered it (thank you again if you're reading this), but based on the food and the experience, I'd gladly come back and pay full price. read more

Great service and food! The back patio is warmed up with heaters and so cute. Perfect spot for a date or to catch up with friends. The staff were friendly and attentive. The host thoughtfully seated my sister and I to a cozy spot in the patio by a heater. It was warm enough that we could take off our outer jackets and be more comfortable. The bon chon was super fresh, and both the kimchi jigae and soondubu jigae were delicious with nice presentation. Sorry no pics but definitely recommend them both! The lychee mango soju was a little too sweet, but I'd try it again if it could be without the added cane sugar. Overall solid place and I'll definitely be back! read more
