That said, our most recent experience fell a little short of what I would expect from one of Bozeman's premier upscale steakhouses in terms of atmosphere. We had a 5:45pm reservation and were seated in a comfortable booth near the front of the restaurant, adjacent to the bar. We started with the fried calamari, which we had also ordered on our previous visit. Unfortunately, this time it was disappointing. There was far too much batter and very little actual calamari. Given how much we enjoyed it previously, perhaps this was simply an off night. The steaks, however, were excellent. My wife ordered the 8-ounce filet and I had the 16-ounce prime strip, both medium rare. Both arrived properly prepared and were flavorful, tender, and delicious. We shared the loaded baked potato and fried Brussels sprouts. The portions were generous and both sides were excellent, particularly the Brussels sprouts with caramelized bacon and small pieces of Granny Smith apple. Service was another highlight. Our waiter, Jordan, was attentive, prompt, and thorough throughout the evening. The additional wait staff were equally conscientious and friendly. My primary reservation concerns the atmosphere. Being seated next to the bar naturally meant more noise, and two nearby tables became particularly loud as the evening progressed. Obviously, a restaurant has limited control over the volume of individual guests, and I also take responsibility for not mentioning when making the reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary. Next time, I'll request a quieter table toward the rear of the dining room. I was also somewhat surprised by how casual the dress standards are. One of the things I appreciate about living in Montana is its relaxed, unpretentious character, and I certainly don't expect formal attire everywhere. My wife and I enjoy getting dressed up when indulging in fine dining, and while we don't expect everyone to arrive in suits and ties or dresses, we do anticipate a level of dress and decorum somewhat above everyday casual. J.W. Heist presents itself as an upscale steakhouse, and an evening for two can easily exceed $200. Seeing shorts and several baseball caps in the dining room--including backwards caps--detracts somewhat from the elevated atmosphere I would expect at that price point. Casual attire in the bar area makes perfect sense, but I think a modest dress standard in the main dining room would help distinguish the experience and make special occasions feel a little more special. Overall, we've enjoyed both of our visits. The quality of the steaks and sides has been excellent, the service has been consistently very good, and we would recommend J.W. Heist to others. We will likely return as well. I simply think a few refinements to the dining-room atmosphere would bring the overall experience more in line with the quality of the food, service, and price point.

The food looks like Korean food, but it does not taste very real or strong. Many dishes feel plain and not very exciting. One thing that stands out is the banchan, which are small side dishes. At most Korean restaurants, these come free with your meal. Here, you have to pay for them as a "flight." This feels strange and not like a true Korean dining experience. The soups are also disappointing. They look good, but the broth does not have much flavor. It tastes weak and a little bland. The tofu in the soup is not very good either. It does not have the soft texture that Korean tofu usually has. The service is fine, and the restaurant is clean and nice enough. But the food is just average. It is not bad, but it is not great either. The other Korean place in town isn't great either but still better.

I contemplated dessert, but the cookie they serve with the ice cream is oatmeal, but I was told they have a brownie and ice cream option. Sign me up! The waitress brought it out a little later, the brownie nice and warm. It was good. No complaints. This place is t great, but it is good and the food is less expensive than some of the options I had around here. I'd definitely go back if I am in the area again. I might even have to try to get some bison meat at home.

Salmon was fresh but felt under-seasoned on its own. I loved the mushrooms but I didn't love the dry/hard melted cheese on top. Chicken Parmigiana - 8/10 tomato sauce is very fragrant. A bit bland otherwise. All entrees came with a soft crumbly bread that I only enjoyed with the mussels broth. Lovely server and restaurant! Charming location. Big portions, we took leftovers.

These guys are FANTASTIC. My first time coming, and every part of my experience was wonderful. A good friend of mine and I both have Celiac Disease, and when we came to Montana Fish Co., they couldn't have been nicer. If anyone out there eats gluten free, you will know some people can be skeptical and outright rude. Not here! Everyone is so accommodating. They made sure that the counter and utensils were cleaned and free of gluten. Additionally, we are not flush with cash. They asked us how much we wanted to spend that evening, and worked around our budgets to give us the best options. It was incredible! I would happily spend my money here again! They are such relaxed, jovial and intelligent cooks. Montana Fish Co. has the best sushi and atmosphere in Bozeman hands down. read more

Paul obviously cares deeply about his craft and made sure we knew what we were eating and where on the fish it came from, and it was really cool to watch him work right in front of us (especially given the fact that the sushi was out-of-this-world). Trevor was super fun and kept everyone engaged through the whole night while also making sure we were supplied on anything we needed - not to mention he is an impressive force in the kitchen and everything they brought out was great. Maddi was also incredible and made the best mocktails I've ever had (and it's not even close) - each of them was innovative and delicious. The food itself was amazing and there wasn't a single course that I disliked. It's near impossible to pick a favorite because they all felt like stand-outs. I am traveling for the summer so I booked a solo reservation and they treated me like family and made sure that I was never bored or left out. Montana is a beautiful place with lots to do and still Izakaya's omakase experience is near the top of my list. If you are on the fence about this experience: make the reservation, it's worth it!

I actually held off on writing this review until our after our fourth visit to make a fair judgement. Yo Poke is a good option if you're looking for a quick and easy meal. The quality of the fish is on the mid-level of good and the ingredients are typically fresh. As for the store itself, it's kept very clean and there are a several tables and chairs if you choose to sit and eat. We've visited on a few occasions now and the staff has been friendly every single time. The biggest problem lies in consistency. On two out of four visits, we received poke bowls that were so sad looking with 6 or 7 little cubes of fish. On the other two visits, we were served a portion that looks like most other restaurants offer. (I've been BYO poke restaurants in several states). At this point, we watch the person building our bowls getting a tiny half scoop of protein, usually fish, or a full one. It's very interesting to me how the servings can come out so different even though they literally use the same scooper...just fill that tiny little thing up and let's call it a day. To be honest, a full scoop versus a half scoop usually determines a generous tip or a "this is just to be nice" one. The food itself is usually pretty tasty, no complaints on that front. Here is one of my favorite BYO combos: + Sushi Rice + Proteins: Tuna & Salmon + Mix-ins: White & Green Onions. + Sauces: Shoyu & Wasabi Mayo. + Sides: Edamame, Surimi Salad, Ginger & Avocado + Toppings: Sesame Oil, Tempura Flakes & Furikake If you try it, let me know what you think! It had no particular taste and featured lumps of tofu and a garnish of wakame. The soup wasn't even medium, and having it served in disposable bowls with plastic spoons made it less apealing. At $26, this meal wasn't worth it. Of course, the management has the payment device throwing on tip options so that you can tip a staff that looks inconvenienced by your presence and well before you taste the food (sorry, this is stupid tipping). This place needs some quality control on the food, better ideas for bowls, and a little bit of joy from the employees. An expensive downer.
