To me, Dr. Hoon is nothing short of a dental superhero. I recently went to a dentist in Silver Lake for a routine cleaning because they were closer than Dr. Hoon's office. That dentist said he found two cavities, and that I needed to get a crown for one of them. I got one of the cavities treated on that day, and decided to get a second opinion from Dr. Hoon before proceeding with the crown. In short, Dr. Hoon verified what I had a hunch of: the other doctor had patched up a stain / chipped old filling as cavity, and then recommended an unnecessary crown on my back molar. The prophylactic sealant sometimes shows up as a shadow on an X-Ray that may or may not indicate a cavity. The Silver Lake doctor showed me this X-Ray image as evidence of a "major cavity" and used it to push an invasive procedure and a crown. Dr. Hoon removed the sealant and showed me (literally using a mirror) that the molar had no cavity. I could see with my own eyes that indeed the teeth was healthy. He resealed it and sent me on my way. Thanks to him, I avoided shaving down a perfectly fine teeth and getting a crown (and paying for all of it). From here on, I'm only going to see Dr. Hoon even if it's just for a cleaning. Ethical dentists are rare and they must be celebrated. Thanks Dr. Hoon! Keep doing what you do! read more

If I were able to give a 0 star, I would. I NEVER write reviews but I'm going to start after this visit. Epitome of a robot with a lack of empathy. Have been going to him for years but yesterday's visit will be my last. Should've left from the beginning when I was left slightly uncomfortable. Gaslit me and had a horrible attitude. Sucks at his procedures and left me with more tooth problems. Only cares about money and tries to manipulate that his mistake was not his and something else. Choked up while writing this because of how unprofessional and cold of a human he is. Actually insane Staff have always been nice but horrible dentist. I have been here since 2008, and Dr Dokko Hoon have never changed. He's never over charge me and always try to suggest me alternative money saving options such as "let's use amalgam filling now and get crown if this fails few years later". In fact, his amalgam filling has not fail for almost decade, and there was no additional cavity appeared inside of filling, which means he has done great detailed oriented job. Long story short, Dr, Dokko found her the way to save her tooth for a little longer before she has to get a crown and the cost was reasonable without insurance. Finding a competent dentist with proper bedside manner and a lack of the slimeball gene is nothing short of impossible, or so I thought until I met Dr. Hoon. Upon the recommendation of my boyfriend, who has been seeing Dr. Hoon for years, I came to receive a cleaning and to make sure that everything was going well in my mouth. I was a patient at the UCLA Dental School for a little over two years, and that experience had dramatic ups and downs. The experience ended with a student who lacked confidence, and ended up putting a crown on my molar that was not sufficiently prepared. The occlusion between my back molars is now nonexistent, and I constantly have to floss and rinse vigorously after every meal, as food always ends up impacted in between my molars. In addition, the gold crown that I now have on my molar had to be fitted, placed on, removed (because she improperly cemented it and immediately had to cut it off), and then placed in my mouth yet again. After that, the next student to take her place called me repeatedly trying to set an appointment. I told her to close my case. Having experienced that, I was wary of ever returning to a dental school, or going to a complete shit show like Western Dental. The Westwood, West LA, and Santa Monica areas are writhe with sleazy dentists that clearly pay for Yelp reviews, and spend more time trying to upsell Invisalign and other unnecessary treatments to maximize their profit margins and bring in big screen TVs and other frivolous accoutrements to their practices. Dr. Hoon is NOTHING like that. He is a sweet, honest, and talented dentist. He will tell you exactly what you need, and exactly what you don't need. I went in thinking I would need work, and I left with only having a cleaning done. I will say this: Forget getting an appointment in any expedient manner. They almost never pick up their phone, and getting an appointment is akin to (no pun intended) pulling teeth. My husband and I have since moved on to Vision Dental in West LA; because their customer service is stellar, the quality of care is equal, if not better, and getting an appointment is veritably instantaneous. read more

My favorite dentist everrrrr. I've been to other dentists in the Southbay area and checkups in Korea in the past too but no one is as good or honest as Dr. Dokko. I've been seeing him for years and I wouldn't want any other dentist so hopefully he stays where he's at for a very very long time. I like most that he doesn't impose extra things on you. For example other dentists would say you have a bunch of cavities, Dr. Dokko states they're stains and encourages extra brushing in such areas. And I'm no dentist but doubt they were cavities as others have stated because even after all these years of what was claimed to be cavities I still don't have any toothaches or symptoms of what would've a cavity. He's very thorough and asks if you have any questions or concerns. I've had my wisdom teeth pulled out by him without any excruciating pain or adverse events. And he appropriately prescribed me antibiotics to prevent any infection and pain killers which I didn't take cause I wasn't experiencing any pain afterwards. Definitely recommend him. He did change locations recently after the Del Amo mall expanded but not far from his original office. With validation parking is free. All his receptionists I noticed have changed since the move, but all very sweet and polite. read more

First time coming here, was referred by my ortho. I've been to many dentists in my lifetime, and honestly, this has been my best experience. Very thorough, and as others have mentioned, doesn't try to upsell on anything but instead provides a very level headed and helpful understanding of my situation. I've been going to Dr. Dokko since my senior year in HS. Even though I moved away, I always made a point to get a check up with him whenever I came home to LA. I've gotten my whitening from him (which is a mold that is made and then a kit he gives along with it) i've gotten my yearly checkups, teeth bonding, my wisdom teeth pulled and cavities filled from him. You name it, I've done it. (Everything except braces, never needed them) He's super smart and explains everything to you in an understandable way. You don't have to be korean either, he speaks English. The nurse staff are nice/friendly. He has an xray monitor right above you so, you can actually see what's going on inside! Appointments can take a couple of weeks, so definitely want to call ahead. read more

Not a good first impression when you show up early for your first appointment and you're waiting more than 30 minutes past your appointment time. Why is the tv turned to the Maury Povich channel? Who watches this? Cleaning was thorough, but uncomfortable. It cost $90 with X-rays included. At least he didn't try and sell me a $400 deep cleaning package like PCH Smiles who told me I was in serious danger of gum disease and gingivitis a year ago. Parking is plenty and free. read more

By far, the best dentist that I'd ever met in my life. His treatment and options were really easy to understand and educated. He is very honest and wouldn't use any scare tactics to recommend any unnecessary jobs done and made me feel safe and comfortable. No wonder so many people recommend him. His staffs were also very nice. But one of the nurse, due to her accent, could come off as a little rude to non Korean speaking people, but she is actually a very professional and kind person. Had an appointment at 11, and with no one else in the waiting room, I waited until 11:20 am. He also insulted me over a VERY small misunderstanding. And later, when my father tried to get the Dr. Hoon to explain the situation with my teeth in Korean because he doesn't understand English very well and I'm not too great at Korean, he threw a fit saying, "I just explained it to your son." You couldn't take 30 more seconds out of your day to just explain it to him in Korean, your native language??? I've been to Dr. Dokko several times. Though I dread going to dentists, I really respect Dr. Dokko. He is very honest and incredibly thorough in the work that he does. I got my check-up and cleaning done today. He took the X-rays and explained whatever concerns he had. He does not try to persuade you to do any unnecessary treatments and tells you his honest opinion. He also made sure to set aside time for me to ask him any questions I had about my teeth. The staff was very nice and when it came to the actual cleaning, dang, he's thorough! He makes sure to get every crevice of your teeth and rid your teeth of all the plaque build up. X-rays and cleaning turned out to be just $70! That is beyond reasonable! Dr. Dokko is a very trustworthy dentist who definitely knows what he is doing. I highly recommend this dentist. read more

I've been coming here since I was in 5th grade and I come occasionally here still even if I live in San Diego now. This doctor is one of the few doctors out there who really cares about his patients. He never ever tried to rip me off, or my family off for that matter. I've done all sorts of appointments with him: cavities, chipped tooth filling, teeth extractions, wisdom tooth removals, cleaning. Dr Dokko didn't try to oversell procedures, but only modestly offered a cosmetic fix (bonding instead of bridges) that will cost several hundred less than what was recommended at another dentist. he even did a temporary bonding procedure to show me what it would look like. he's fast, quick, and painless, and it's obvious that he is practical with his advie. i've already recommended him to several other people. they only accept PPO. read more

Dr. Dokko is one of those who does it all. He does oral evaluations, oral surgery, cleaning, crown, extraction, root canal, etc. He's a dentist, root canal specialist, and hygienist. It's not like he's short of any staff. There are at least 3 or 4 assistants working simultaneously, but it is always Dr. Dokko who works his patients while one of the staff is there to provide any assistance. As for comments from few Yelpers, there may have been change in staff recently because I have not observed any issue with the receptionist. Price is very fair, the service is fast but great. Hey guys, I made my account just to review this dentist. At first I was nervous, my mom recommended this place for me, and unfortunately I don't speak Korean, however there was no communication problems whatsoever. It had a nice atmosphere to it. I went in there to remove a wisdom tooth, and I was prepared to cringe at the cost. I've researched and called up other dentists, and most people pay 150-300$ per wisdom tooth without dental insurance, and this place did it for 80$! Extraction was painless, and I was inside the building for at most 30 minutes. The x-ray was free too. read more

All they care about is money! I tried to go in on the last day my ins was expiring and they told me I needed to pay cash UP FRONT if I wanted to get treatment here because they weren't sure if they'd get paid. I extended my ins because of this and was trying to go in here to get treated for a cracked tooth but they said because I got it previously treated for "filling" elsewhere, I needed to pay cash anyways because they were told by ins they cannot pay for same tooth done by other dentist. However, I told recept that I needed other service done (like crown and possible root canal) but she demanded for cash and she said that's what the doc told her to do!! I checked with my ins and they said that's not what they told the NEW recept but told her that I cannot get same treatment (which was filling) but other services were ok eventhough it's on the same tooth and I was going in for something else!!! I went in to the office to talk to doc and sort it out but recept kept asking for cash and I was really upset at her after driving there for an hr to get there to find this out late, so doc told me to leave. I was refused service from this place for the first time in my life!! He didn't care what happened and what their recept did and didn't do right. I have all the convo with recept recorded on my phone but no one believed me there and all they wanted was money up front!! Never recommending this place to anyone anymore also, shame on you doc for not listening to your patient on their side. Never be late to this place people! The old recept never gave me appmt time when I was there late once and was so happy that she was gone but even worse one took over. read more

I trust Dr. Dokko completely. I was told by another dentist that I needed bunch of work on my teeth and it would cost 5k. I was referred to Dr. Dokko by Dr. Oh friend from church. I ended up spending just $70 and this was about 5 years ago. My wife and both of my sons get dental work from Dr. Dokko. This guy is realy nice (he goes on mission trips with other dentists to help areas in need) and doesn't upsell at all. my wife and i went to another family dentistry in lomita and they told my wife she needed 4 fillings and i have a cracked molar which would need an implant. he was really shocked that my wife needed 4 fillings and was laughing at the other dentist asking if we could get the xrays so he could see what his machine wasn't seeing. also, he said that keeping the structural integrity of my molar was best in the long run and tampering with it would only make it weaker. really friendly guy, good good bedside manner, i recommend him. 1 star off because it is such a long wait time, like at least a month. read more

Update okay I went to a different dentist and they could clearly tell that tooth in question was cracked. Wanna know how they knew? They actually looked at it instead of looking just at the x ray. So when I was going to back to tell Hoon Dokko my sister tells me that he doesn't want any more trouble from me. Labeling me as a "trouble patient". So he told my mother in private to not come back. I never knew about this till now, I always thought of him as trustworthy dentist since I always came here when I was younger.
