We had breakfast here at Hooper Bay Cafe while staying with friends at the Hilton. Buffet style with servers topping off coffee and water promptly! Stopped in for coffee before another business opened. The ladies working in there were so friendly and attentive. I wasn't interested in the continental breakfast but it did look good but was pricey at $23-30 depending on the options you chose. I had coffee and some oatmeal. Both were fine but nothing exceptional. I think the prices are a bit over the top ($12.50 for a bowl of oatmeal) but the folks working there are exceptional. 3 stars for the food and an extra for the service. read more

We had a relatively mediocre experience here at Hooper Bay Café, the breakfast option available in the Hilton hotel in Anchorage. Everyone there was super friendly, including the person who seated us and especially our server. Even the person who made my omelet was very nice although he had a bit of trouble with the egg whites base I had asked for, he seemed visibly frustrated with his own efforts. I assured him everything would be OK and enjoyed how it tasted anyway. There is enough to eat, though nothing was particularly fantastic. Having an omelet station definitely ups the anti-on a breakfast buffet, but generally speaking we find hotel buffet breakfast to be awfully expensive for what you get and wish that they offered more à la carte ordering options instead of the expensive continental, or even more expensive hot breakfast like here. The coffee was OK. I definitely like really strong coffee, and this wasn't it, but it was a step above the brown water you can get at some establishments. For me, the star of the breakfast were the potatoes... We've been at a few other hotels on this trip, where the potatoes were awful over fried, and not particularly edible. These were well done and a nice addition to the buffet offerings. There are other places to eat in town... Even better places for breakfast. But if you've got an early flight and don't have time to explore the area around the hotel, this is probably your only option. Hotels probably rely on that for convenience which is why the prices are what they are. In the end, if you can swing it, I'd recommend getting out of the hotel. You'll get better food at a lower price. read more

I was speaking at a conference and we didn't feel like leaving the hotel, so we decided to try it out for breakfast. My colleague ordered the brioche French toast, but they were out of it so she got the fast fare - scrambled eggs with ham and hash browns. I ordered blueberry pancakes with bacon - they brought me sausage and I had to ask for the bacon, which she did bring, and hash browns. The food wasn't wonderful, wasn't terrible. It was warm and filled our stomachs. Lupe was a great server, very attentive. The lady working in the coffee shop helped out when she wasn't busy. I drank hot tea and they had 12 different flavors for me to choose from. My colleague drank a Pepsi, which she was thrilled about since she prefers Pepsi and Anchorage seems to be a predominantly Coke place. This would not be a first choice, but when you don't want to lose your parking place or put your boots on, it works. read more

Well now...Iditarod hit town again, and Downtown I went, with Fur Rendezvous in full swing. I watched the ceremonial start of the Last Great Race, enjoyed all the downtown fun, in the 10 degree weather, and of course headed for Hopper Bay for my annual lunch. Walked in got a booth as usual, and the place was buzzing! A new addition this year at the cafe ......Delicatessen Counter or Buffet. I asked about it, you get all you can eat soup, salad, sandwiches, cookies, and a plethora of lunch meats and condiments, for 15.00...I said OKAY!!!!!!!!!! Chicken Noodle Soup SUPERB, Tomato was great, meats were fresh the salad was fresh....talked with the Chef about his soups....he was very proud!!! :) If you stay at the Hilton, you could do alot worse...if you are in town and want a decent lunch...then stop by...it is good. read more

So, two years ago, I decided to give this place a try for lunch. Long story short, the wait was inordinately long (and the place was virtually empty), and the food was sub-par. Today, I decided to give this place a second chance. I should not have. There were staff-generated challenges from start to finish. First off, the wait for my food was inordinately long again (40+ minutes), making me late for my conference workshop. Second, (and in the midst of my wait), I found out that my order got entered into the system incorrectly, and the cook had to make my meal all over again. Third, when my meal did come, it came with a side of sweet potato fries, when I had ordered a side salad. Fourth, when the manager brought out the side salad, he brought it out with dressing, when I had requested no dressing. Fifth, a bowl of clam chowder was added to my bill, which had been ordered by another person in my party (we had separate checks). Sixth - and maybe this was a miscommunication - after being informed of the billing snafu, the manager, he said not to worry about it. I took that to mean my meal would be comped, due to the challenges we'd had throughout lunch. When the manager asked me how I planned to pay, it became clear that I wasn't going to get comped, and that only the clam chowder had been taken off of my bill. I told him I thought my whole meal should be comped, because of the challenges we had throughout lunch. To his credit, he did, but it was obvious he didn't want to. I won't be eating there again, and I encourage others to look elsewhere for delicious food options as well. read more

We both had the breakfast buffet. Had it been free for hotel guests, it would have been considered decent (above average, even), maybe 4 stars. Had it been $10-15, maybe 3 stars. $28? No way. It's not worth that. Pretty basic hotel buffet (again, the kind that is usually free). The reindeer sausage is great (but you can get it pretty much anywhere in Anchorage), the rest was your normal scrambled eggs, bacon, pastries, juice, etc. I can't speak to the menu items, they may or may not be worth the money. read more

Once again we have had a poor lunch during a conference here. I think the folks who work here are way overbooked. We got four of five meals today at our table stone cold, but delivered so late that we needed to eat and couldn't wait longer before our next session. Out of 17 meals, only one was completely right and hot. My quesadilla, requested with mushrooms and avocado, came with onions instead of avocado. It took more than an hour to get meals. Do yourself a favor. Eat elsewhere. The only reason this has two stars is because our server was trying and was sweet. read more

I was there last week for a conference and decided to eat at the hotel. That was a mistake. Ordered the turkey club sandwich. It came out and looked like my kid made it. No presentation, dried white bread ( not sure it was toasted) hard as tac. It hurt my palate when I bit it. Looks like someone took turkey meat out of the package, put it on hard white bread, put a leaf of lettuce, tomato slice, and bacon, and served it! No condiments. Work on it read more

The food is insanely overpriced, even for hotel food. I'm airline crew and so I stay here often. I paid $13 for a grilled cheese sandwich and a cup of soup. For the price I expected a decent sized sammy. Nope. Just two slices of white bread (toasted to a crisp) and a couple slices of cheese. The cup of soup tasted like it came out of a can. It wasn't terrible, just not very good. I've ordered their buffalo wings and they're not bad, but they're like $12 for ten. If you do eat there I'd recommend the chicken bbq quesadilla. It's decent size and tastes pretty good. Also, their chocolate lava cake is delicious, but again, it's tiny and expensive. You wont see many airline crew in their because we tend to be cost savvy (except for the Korean pilots, who don't realize they're getting ripped off.) Overall, it's good in a pinch or when it's snowing hard out and you don't feel like walking around the corner to F-street station or Brewhouse, or Ginger, or any number of better places. read more

Although we enjoyed our meals, way to spendy for being basically a burger and sandwich type menu. Service was off. Had to ask three times just to get a napkin. Asked server if we could get the bill and have it split, she didn't even ask what was being split and rushed off, bringing back one bill for all. Then my card was overcharged from what I had paid for with tip. Not impressed! read more
