Was very accommodating with scheduling my appointments as soon as possible due to the fact that I knocked out my front two teeth and needed fillings because I was not about to walk around with two gaps. Dr. Gunawan is very gentle, caring, nice, and made me feel very comfortable during all the sessions I went to her (I chipped the fillings like 4 times afterwards). Each time, she charged me the same amount (very reasonably priced). When I finally decided to change from fillings to crowns, she even allowed me to use a previous charge for credit for the crowns. Her office is small and cozy with a spacious parkinglot. All her staff are very welcoming. I am sure I will probably go to her husband for braces, because I was told they work in the same office and he is the orthodontist there. This review is for Dr. Navarete and wanted to share it here since Dr. Gunawan refer me to orthodontic care in her office. I finally took my braces off recently and felt the need to provide some insights throughout my treatment. My treatment took 1 year and 2 months and that is record time! For any one considering braces and concerned about having it on for 2-3 years, look no further, go to Dr Alfonso Navarette. He is awesome! I went to all my appointments every month and he always does a great job in updating me on my progress. During each and every visit, he asked me if there was anything visually I want to straighten and I would give him feedback and then he works his magic, tighten, and voila it gets straighter. I listened to all his instructions, used my rubber bands as directed, and went every single month to see him. It was important for me to have the braces removed as soon as possible since I will be getting married next year. And Dr. Navarette listened to all my concerns and guided me throughout the process for phenomenal results. I finally took my braces off and he set an impression of my teeth and gave me my retainer the next morning to minimize any chance of my teeth moving. Then he reviewed with me on how to maintain my teeth during this transitional period. I will still be visiting him monthly and then quarterly so he can ensure my teeth stays straight. More than I had expected in the areas of: *service *quality *understanding of your needs Prior to coming in: Usually, going to the dentist is an experience that can be nerve-racking, physically painful, and downright scary for many of us. However, from the telephone conversation when I asked her questions, she was patient in providing information and her demeanor was calm and professional. Coming in: The two visits I've had with her so far, her qualifications and service are unique from other dentists I've had in the past because not only is she approachable and informative to your specific needs, but she also takes the effort and time to make sure you are in the least amount of pain as possible and experiencing the most amount of comfort she is able to provide. Finally it's happening: I visited her office two times. Once to get a routine check up, x-rays, and cleaning and the second to complete the cleaning and to fill my new cavity. Before she proceeded to put in the filling, I was delightfully surprised when she mentioned to raise my hand if I felt any sensitivity. That was new because most dentists would never request that a patient informs them if there is pain. They usually expect we would provide that type of response by default. Also, the type of verbage that was used "sensitivity" in comparison to "pain" I found more professional. When she proceeded with the injection to numb my mouth, I also noticed she moved my mouth around and the result was that it was less painful in this process than I had experienced in the past with prior dentists. Therefore, I concluded that if I were to continue to see Dr. Gunawan as my dentist, no matter what procedure I had, I would lose my fear of pain and become comfortable and trust her judgement and know that she would do her best to make me comfortable and complete her work in an appropriate amount of time. Additionally, the office is clean and organized. The staff is professional and pleasant. The verdict: Even though I live in San Francisco, so it is far for my commute, I would definitely consider and believe it is worth the commute for the quality of results and dental service of Dr. Gunawan. Came across Gunawan Navarrete Family Dentistry on yelp. I had a wisdom tooth that had been bothering me for almost a week. Finally decided to look around for an oral surgeon who was able to accept patients on the same day. Gave them a call and they we're able to squeeze me in! Another plus was that it was on a Saturday!! You don't find many dentists who are open on the weekends. They took me in, took out the wisdom tooth that was bothering me, and then I was on my way. Friendly atmosphere with friendly people!! Since I moved to the Bay Area, I had tried two dentists before I followed a friend's recommendation and went to see Dr Navarrete. His office is a bit far for me, but after my first visit, I had no question that it was worth the drive to East Bay. My first visit to Dr Navarrete was a regular dental exam. All dentists that I had seen before spent at most 15-30 minutes on the exam, usually after a tooth cleaning. Dr Navarrete spent at least an hour and a half on the exam, being very thorough and knowledgeable, and very patient in addressing my concerns with detailed explanations. Unlike the previous dentists I had visited, he did not push for any treatments that the other dentists wanted to have done on me. He even explained why these treatments/procedures are not necessary, and what may be some of the more affordable options if I must have them done. He seemed to be genuinely interested in providing the highest quality care, and not in generating profit for his practice. He correctly diagnosed why one of my molars was still bothering me after I had a partial crown done at another dentist a year ago - the crown had cracked and therefore the nerve was exposed, causing sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. He then performed a quick procedure to seal the crack, and it totally worked! The molar has not been bothering me since. Another plus is that he is also an orthodontist. During this visit, he also looked at my tooth alignment and offered to adjust my retainers in my future visits. For my second visit, I had an old filling replaced. Again, Dr Navarrete was very patient and technically competent. Again, he spent a lot more time on the procedure than any other dentist I had seen before, to make sure the job is done to perfection. The cost for this procedure ended up a lot less than the estimates that the other dentists quoted me. One small detail that impressed me was how little pain I felt when he did a lidocaine injection to my gum (probably the least painful lidocaine injectcion I have ever felt). Overall, I was very happy with the care I received at this practice and would definitely recommend him to anyone I know. read more

Wow I love it here!! I am one of those peoples that freaked out with dentists so bad that I stopped going to a dentist for about 5-6 years. I finally decided to get over my fear and start looking for a dentist that I can feel comfortable with. I went to a dentist (HMO) and he told me nothing was wrong I had great teeth and he completed my visit with a 15 min cleaning! I mentioned to him that I was getting a little pain on one of back teeth and he said OH there is nothing there your just sensitive. After being rushed out I sat in our car and felt like I was being rushed out and not valued as a customer. I thought after 5-6 years of no dentist visit I'm sure I would need at the very least deep cleaning!!! The next day as I was sharing my experience with a coworker she told me about her dentist who is Dr. Gunawan. She told me she was nice and was the best dentist she ever went too. So I thought it was worth a try and I am sure GLAD that did!!!! Dr. Gunawan understood my fear and she took her time with me. Off course I needed a cleaning because what that other office did sure was not a good. After looking at my x-ray she explained to me that I had a cavity right where I told that other dentist that I felt pain!! She takes the time to get to know her patients and make me feel like a friend when I walk in! Yesterday when I went for my appointment I found myself eager to make my next appointment!!! Which before I would run out the door and not come back. I am so happy that I found her. I simply adore Dr. Gunawan. She is real and not a front. One time last minute my crown popped out. I wasn't her patient and she said no problem come in. She takes her time and listens to the patient. She doesn't rush you because its time to see another patient. She builds a relationship with the patient. I highly recommend this dentist.
