If there is one thing that is guaranteed to squick me out, it's donuts fried in old oil. While the service was friendly enough, it won't save the taste if it's fried in old oil. It really needed to be changed and fried at the proper temperature. My apple fritter was a huge greaseball of oil and not much else. I ate a bite of that and dove in for my cinnamon roll...really, not good. It only cost me about $3 so I wasn't going to quibble over it. Dropped the donuts into the trash can outside and made tracks for Starbucks to get a small coffee and oatmeal. I had to make myself feel better somehow... read more

Damn you, you high-rating Yelpers! Yet another place with calorific goodness I shouldn't be eating! I never object to businesses keeping costs low with cash-only. The donuts are as good as other Yelp reviewers say they are; the selection dwindles as the morning goes on, and you can't beat the service. There are Old Regulars, and come-often-enough folks like me. In 2013, I explained National Donut Day, after I came in and the owner had darned little to sell. I think I let him know a couple of weeks beforehand this year, so he was Prepared For The Onslaught Of Celebrants. Depending on factors I'm not sure of, one often gets that rare-these-days baker's dozen. Be sure to have a little extra for a tip! read more

I'll admit it. I love donuts, maybe too much. When visiting a friend in San Jose, I asked for a few recommendations for donuts. One of her suggestions was Hooz Donuts as it was close to her home. I have a few "Go-To" donuts for testing, a glazed raised, a double chocolate and an apple fritter. I'm glad I went to Hooz. The glazed raised was tall and fluffy looking and the inside had the right chewiness. The double chocolate was a good balance of the donut and the dark chocolate frosting. Good stuff. Real good apple fritters can be hard to find but not here. The apple fritters here are amazing with a crunchy outside crust and a flavorful, soft inner portion. Love it. The people here are friendly and quick to serve. I'll definitely be back on my next visit to SJ. read more

Oh man these are good donuts!!! I normally and kinda skeptical of donut shops because they are often dingy and the donuts are greasy and not worth the calories BUT this place is a little outdated inside but I like the old donut shop vibe especially when the donuts are sooo good! A little crispy and no oily after taste! This place is my new go to for donuts. I don't go often but will make a point to bring some to my favorite doctors and stuff like that. I also love the fact that they are courteous and often sneak in a few free donut holes for me =) I once called them to put on hold 5 fritters and they were like, "Sure, we'll hold them for you!" They didn't have many donguhts, which is understandable because we came so late in the morning. But what they did have left over was stale and kind of gross, we got 3 different types and they were all nasty. And then once we found out the coffee he gave us had expired 2 months ago, we were pretty dissapointed :( This place is also a cop hang out! read more

It is true the earlier you get there the better selection. I have many favorites especially the ones with the pink frosting! Their hot chocolate is THE BEST I have EVER had. Hooz Donuts are theez? My Donuts! The Apple Fritters are the best here. Also this is the only donut shop in a probably a 3 mile radius that has Apple Fritters (or any donuts for that matter) after 1pm. Every other shop around makes enough to last till10 am and then try to sell sandwiches or what have you... I LOVE APPLE FRITTERS. These are the best around. The plaza is kind of run down so I really try to stay away from this area, especially when the safeway was there but I stopped by one morning to pick up half a dozen donuts for the office. The asian man at the counter was awake and friendly, and my total came out to $6ish. There were a few other people inside at 7am but most people were hanging out in their cars in the parking lot, quite a few characters. Hooz Donuts has always had the best donuts in San Jose. (When I was little my dad used to take me to the first location on Lincoln Ave. They had a huge bar where you could munch on donuts, read the paper, and drink cocoa. ) This location still offers wonderful sugar fantasies for a great price. Not my favorite donut experience. I bought 2 dozen donut holes for my class and a glazed sprinkle for me to eat on the way. The later was delicious. The former was boarder line terrible! They were baaaaaarely glazed in sugariness and fried, duh, but that's all I tasted: fried! Upon tasting the first one to see if I'd ever come back, which I doubt it, is all you could taste was the oil it was grow in and with no sugar or wetness to make this bad eating habit ;) worth while. They're donuts are wonderful. They are very light and fluffy, don't taste greasy or heavy at all. They've become a favorite of the office, in fact a our new assistant director said since she tasted these she's not happy with other donut shops! John the owner is really great too, always serves with a smile and throws in a few "extra" donut holes if you're a regular. Another plus is he's located really, really close to church, so that's a special treat after Sunday service! read more

The only reason I'm giving them one star is because zero is not an option. Probably the most disgusting donut I have ever eaten. Not only were they burned under the frosting I can tell the fryer hasn't been changed out for months, perhaps years. Save yourself a trip and avoid this place like the plague.
