Famous for a reason! When I first moved to the Bay Area in the 90's, I came here now and then and loved it. Now, we live a bit further away, so it's not exactly a neighborhood donut shop. But I was headed to SoCal and decided I wanted family and friends to taste the best donuts in the Bay Area. I ordered ahead to be able to get what I wanted and that process was smooth and efficient. You don't have to wait in the line to get your preordered donuts, which is nice. The guy who took my order over the phone was nice, repeated the order back to me, and told me not to wait in the line when I came in. It's literally probably been 15+yrs since I've had these and they're still excellent. I ate a famous glazed at pickup and the special thing is they have some substance to them. Unlike a lot of glazed, these are both larger and denser, without being heavy or greasy. Yes, they're deep fried, but they don't taste oily. But one will fill a pretty good portion of your stomach (I had a chocolate croissant at home first, so it wasn't all the donut). Sweet, but not overly so. The cinnamon twists are huge, as are the raspberry filled and buttermilk. The old fashioneds are normal sized and the cake donut is actually on the smaller side, though it may just be because it's sitting next to gargantuans that it seems that way. I won't be able to eat all of them myself. Besides the glazed, I'll have a jelly filled and chocolate old fashioned, and I'll pilfer a part of the strawberry buttermilk from my nephew to taste. But everyone knows these are great donuts, so won't go on and on, but if you have out of town guests or family who's into donuts, this is definitely worth going out of your way to let them try these. read more

I've had Stan's numerous times over the years and initially enjoyed their donuts but I probably won't be coming back. I've had more subpar donuts than great donuts here. I think Stan's is unpleasantly greasy. Yes, donuts are deep fried and not a health food but I don't think each bite I take should be gushing with oil. That was unfortunately my experience with the apple fritter which was the size of a frisbee ($3). It was adequately craggy and not too sweet, but I wish there were more pieces of apple in it. The glazed donuts ($1.90 for one, $18.50 for a dozen) were definitely better than the apple fritters but still a bit too greasy. I like how pillowy and plush they are though! Overall, I appreciate how beloved Stan's is even if it's not my favorite donut shop. The service was fine, they were efficient. Stan's Donut Shop is not a donut shop.... It's an institution! Open since 1959, Stan's has been rolling out fresh doughnuts like a factory and they run the counter like a well oiled machine. The line at 9am this morning was about 30 people long when we arrived and pretty much stayed that way. "The line is like that everyday so be patient, it's worth it" Stan's is known for their amazing glazed doughnuts, they are airy, slightly ooey gooey and chewy and when they are warm..... oh mommy!!! The maple bars are have a crispy outer shell and are pillowy soft on the outside side. The maple on top is excellent but a bit overwhelming sweet. Thugs to know: #1. They are located in a shopping center and there is plenty of parking. #2. They only take cash, but they do have an ATM machine. #2.1 glazed do #3. If you want to insure an order, call them the day before and order what you want. #4. They do have counter bar stools to sit at and enjoy a coffee and a doughnut there. #5. Trust me on this one!!! If your glaze doughnut is cold, pop it in a microwave for 20-15 seconds "it will taste like it just came out of the fryer" #6. Stan's Donut has some of the best donuts I've ever had. That said, be prepared to wait a really, really long time if you're just pulling up to Stan's without a pre-order. When I showed up to pick-up my pre-ordered donuts at 7:45 a.m. on a Sunday, there were well over 40 people in line. Although pre-ordering sounds simple in theory, it's really pretty difficult to get a hold of somebody over the phone. My wife and I each called about 30 times over the course of two days before we were connected with somebody who was able to take our pre-order. We ordered four glazed, one strawberry cruller, and one of their Sunday specials -- a banana buttermilk donut. Of the ones we tried, the glazed one was definitely the fan favorite. The brioche was light, fluffy, not overwhelmingly sweet, and not oily tasting at all. I usually feel a bit sluggish after eating a full donut, but that wasn't the case with the donuts here. Although I'm generally not a fan of cake donuts, I thoroughly enjoyed the banana buttermilk donut here. The outside had a nice crunch to it while the inside was not overly dense. It's definitely on the sweeter side, so you'll want to enjoy it with a cup of coffee. If you're looking for incredible donuts, do yourself a favor and stop by Stan's! Onto the actual donuts. Since I'd never been here, I wanted to try just the standard glazed donut. I ordered 6 (the maximum) because I was going to share some with my friends afterwards. The donut was extremely soft and fluffy, and all I could taste was sugar, and each bite kind of just dissolved in my mouth. It's a great donut for those who love the lighter and fluffier texture, but I personally like my donuts with a little bit more of a chew. I wished I could taste more than just pure sugar. Came here at 12:30 on a Saturday afternoon and there was a line of 20 people out the door. Took about 30 minutes to get through. Relatively fast and friendly service. The glazed lives up to the hype and is probably the best I've had... totally melts in your mouth! I just realized my 12 year old review needed some much deserved updating. I have been back since that last visit at least a few dozen times and I must say, they have the BEST GLAZED on the planet. Soft, fluffy and WARM! My mouth is literally watering as I type this. Stan's is truly the G.O.A.T. of the glazed. Sweet little coffee shop in an older strip mall. So I've been going to Stan's for the last year ever since my coworkers told me about it and it's been a little crazy since the inception of the "Donut Wars." Went Friday morning after my usual night shift and I've never seen the line so long. I think I waited about 40 mins, which was well worth it, than the usually maybe 5-10 max. Ended up getting my usual mix of glazed raised, chocolate raised, maple raised, and a couple daily special which was apple buttermilk which were all amazing as usual. These donuts have the perfect balanced texture of being fluffy and crispy on the outside. Service as usual is excellent. They're pretty fast at helping everyone with what they want which was surprising to see the line. I even asked if that had been the norm recently and they said ever since the start of the donut wars and it being a Friday morning, it has been. Overall, ever since I've started going here I've always said they hands down have the best donuts in the Bay. I live in the North Bay and commute down to work but every place I've tried can't keep up with Stan's. Even after walking across the street and grabbing Randy's for direct comparison. I have been craving a Stan's glazed donut for the longest time, and thought there was no better way to start a road trip to SoCal! We got to Stan's at around 7am and the line was wrapped around the inside of the store but it moved quickly. I wanted to try a few other items, so we got glazed donuts, a cinnamon roll, the daily rotating banana buttermilk donut and a maple donut. The glazed donuts come out hot and fresh, and they were heavenly. The best glazed donuts I've ever had. The cinnamon roll was also super good, and not too sweet! I'm not a big maple fan, but the maple donut was also surprisingly pretty good. The banana buttermilk donut was a bit too artificial tasting for me, so I'd pass on this next time. This is a cash only spot, and everything is very reasonably priced. For 6 donuts, and two coffees, my total came out to around $17 which I thought was a great deal! I heard Stan's has the best donuts in Silicon Valley a while ago and finally made it there this morning. I'd read in the Yelp reviews that a line forms out the door in the morning, but I thought that was only on the weekends. Nope. I got there on a Thursday morning right as they opened at 6am and there was already a line. It took about 15 min. to get to the counter to place my order. Stan's makes the donuts right there in the front of the shop, so they are completely fresh. I ordered one chocolate French cruller and one chocolate crème-filled glaze. The cruller was wonderful. Airy and soft with delicious chocolate on top. Should have ordered two of those. The chocolate crème-filled was not as good. It was too crispy on the outside and had too much warm crème inside. I might have liked it better if I hadn't first eaten the perfect cruller. Stan's only takes cash, but they have an ATM machine in the shop. There is a large shared parking lot. Phone orders must be placed 24 hours in advance. I'll be back for more crullers and to try an apple fritter, which are only served on Mondays. read more

One "line," is for customers who can enter the store if only ordering 1-2 donuts. The other line is for customers with more orders. If you are lucky enough to arrive at 6AM you can have your choice of some of the best Donuts in the Bay Area. Their only true rival that I have discovered is Johnny Donuts in SF. I absolutely LOVE the Chocolate Cruller from this place. They use high quality chocolate in the glaze, and the Donuts are incredibly light and slightly eggy-savory. I've been to Stan's a few times but haven't done a review because I always eat the donuts before I can take a picture. This time is no different, but I figured I'd do a review anyway. I arrived on a Wednesday morning and was surprised that there was a line out the door. The counter seating was also about 80% full. You can cut the line if you have a pick up order or are only getting 1-2 donuts. I texted my partner when I got in the line and it took about 22 minutes from lining up to walking out with my donuts. The guys making donuts at the front were churning them out even at around 9am, no doubt the donuts will sell out! There's an ATM at the back if you forget cash. I ordered two glazed old fashioned donuts, one maple raised, and one chocolate raised. All were thoroughly delicious and perfectly crisp. Service was very prompt, got my 4 donuts and went on my merry way. Nothing like a fresh Stan's donut, they're still good a few hours later but taste best right off the line. I saw several customers eating their donuts in their cars and I also took a few bites in the car, hence why I don't have photos to show. read more

I got their famous glazed donuts, the bavarian one, a couple old fashioned, pink cake, etc. Let me tell you, their glazed donuts must be eaten fresh for optimal enjoyment. I couldn't believe the soft fluffy texture, and it was just the right amount of sweetness It didn't have an overly oily after taste either! I killed my donut in less than 30 seconds, and this is coming from someone who used to not like donuts. But my favorite is their bavarian one - its powder donut packed with custard that's NOT TOO SWEET. My goodness my eyes rolled back on this one. I gave away most of my donuts to friends so I'm going to come back and try more! My friends actually ate them the next day and they still thought it was hella good.
