Their teriyaki chicken is the best in Napa that we have had and I think their chow mein is delicious, but it's mostly just noodles... And who doesn't love noodles?? lol... So, we decided to give Hop Hing's another try today for lunch. Big mistake... the food is luke warm, the flavor is non existent, the pot stickers did not seemed done all the way through. I swear the rice and the chow mein are overcooked and it's like they add new noodles to the day old chicken/vegetables. There's a reason this place only has 3 1/2 stars. We didn't find anything good about it. But again there was nothing bad about it either. It was just kind of meh. I really wanted to like it because I love supporting local businesses and I also love Chinese food. Especially fast food, Chinese food. I want Panda Express does it better, that says a lot. FOOD: service and cost were great, so it was in this area that they really failed to come through. The sesame chicken did not taste like sesame chicken that I've ever had. The orange chicken was blah. Did not have any spice or any flavor that I could discern. It was basically fried chicken in liquid. The combo chicken was not spicy at all and in fact, it was kind of sweet, which is weird for Compal chicken compared to everywhere else I've ever had it. The teriyaki chicken was the only part that I thought was reasonably good and even that was only OK. SERVICE: service was OK. The portion sizes were huge and the quantity great so no complaints there. COST: again, cost was very reasonable, especially for how much they give you. This was my first time trying this place as a local and it will most definitely be my last. I was excited to try it since it is so close to my house and quick. The food was inedible/ disgusting. I had a few bites, and threw the entire plate away. The food tasted as though it was stale/left out and reheated multiple times. Definitely not freshly made. My stomach has been burbling and I've already been to the bathroom once...I'm hoping it's not food poisoning especially since I am pregnant. Sadly the chow mein had hardly any vegetables--just a tiny bit of cabbage--and everything tasted bland. Went at lunch time and all the steam tables were full and fresh. I was surprised at how many people were eating in as much as getting food to go. Food is always fresh & replenished in the "prepared" selections. But I like to make-to-order. My Go-To's are the following: Chow fun noodles with beef or combo- it's very tasty and hits the carb fix! Mongolian beef meat is tender and savory with the green onions. The wonton soup has plenty of wontons and vegetables are perfectly steamed. Call it in and your wait time is minimal. Lunch hour crowd during the week with local workers & high school students but the hard-working staff slams it down quickly & efficiently. It's very sad when you've been going to a place for years and their menu says that they serve garlic and vegetables for 599 for a small container and when you asked to order it, they say oh no you have to order a large cause that's a special order I said well what's the 599 on the menu oh if that's on the steam table I said well it doesn't say that you guys have a regular menu up there that says you can order a small for 599. We love Hop Hing's. Living in the wine country, decent, let alone actually good Chinese food is hard to find. Contrary to concerns mentioned in some of the other much older reviews, the staff are always wearing masks and gloves. While visiting beautiful Napa County, I stopped in at the Silverado Plaza shopping Center around lunchtime. My plan was to grab a quick cup of coffee, but I noticed Hop Hing's Kitchen- maybe a snack and then coffee? Hop Hing's is a rather small Chinese restaurant that has a steam table with stainless steel trays that keep the food hot until you "point" to what you want and it's dished up. Pick rice, fried rice, chow mein etc and an entree or two and you have a combo plate. Yup- just like over at Panda. There seemed to be a good assortment of various meat entree's, vegetable entree's, and a combo of meat and veg to choose from. Notably, the dining area seemed very clean and the steam table and stainless trays were neat and orderly. What I always look for at a place like this is IF the tops of the entree's look dried out from sitting around without being stirred. This obviously makes for an unappetizing bite, but can also be a health problem. I noticed that none of the trays appeared to have sat unattended enough to dry out. Good signs for sure! As with many Chinese restaurants such as this, getting the 1 item or 2 item plus a "starch" item is most popular. Along these lines I narrowed my pick between the a "full sized" styrofoam lunch box of food for $10- (2 entree's and 1 starch) or a "snack box" half that size with 1 entree and 1 starch for $8-. I went with the snack box. Please note that your food will go into a styrofoam box if you get a combo meal to eat there or take out. I chose broccoli with beef for the entree and chicken fried rice for the starch. The server took my order and I watched her dish it into the styrofoam box. The server interacted as little as possible. Instead of a greeting she sort of twitched her head as a signal to tell her what I wanted. after that it was "anything else?" And that's it. After my food was dished up and bagged in a plastic bag, she left it on the steam table and started pulling other entree's out through the pass through from the kitchen and was refilling the trays with items that had nothing to do with my order. She then sort of absentmindedly wiped down the countertop while glancing outside, as if killing time. My food sat on the counter and I stood there wondering when she was going to hand over my food. It was odd and funny at the same time! She did break through the fog and took my money and handed over my snack box. I sat in the dining room and opened the box. The meal looked pretty good. There is a LOT that COULD go wrong with broccoli beef, so it's a pretty good test of ingredients and cooking technique. It is one of those "simple but not simple" dishes because it can really expose when cheap ingredients are used or cooking technique is off. The broccoli had good color and it appeared to be cooked through without being overcooked. I was happily surprised to note that the beef was sliced very thin against the grain. Also, try as I might I could not find ANY excess gristle or fat in any of the slices of been on my plate. This is no small feat! It points to the fact that they don't toss in cheap cuts and they take time to trim them off properly to get rid of excess fat and gristle. The chicken fried rice looked like it was moist, but the chunks of chicken looked like they might have been cooked dry and the color of the rice looked drab. Flavor- the broccoli with beef was cooked well and was tasty. The broccoli had a slight crunch to it as it should if properly stir fried. The beef tasted beefy, was tender, had no excess fat and zero gristle! The stir fry "gravy" was heavy on the soy and salt- but was still tasty. Also, it had that "gloss" we expect from this type of dish. The chicken fried rice was just "okay" to me. The chunked chicken was very dry, and the rice while moist (fried rice is so often overcooked) it lacked seasoning. Overall the fried rice was rather "one note" and I found myself deciding to stop eating more because I figured I would save room for coffee which is a couple of doors down. While I ate, as did a few other patrons in the restaurant- I watched as two different employees sat in the dining room at the same time at two different tables to chat on cell phones. Now I understand this isn't a high end celebrity chef owned restaurant or anything, but basic food service rule is that the restaurant's dining room should not be used as an employee break room. Meals yes, playing and talking on the cell phone- no. Would I try Hop Hing again? Sure I would. And I will certainly visit the Silverado Plaza Shopping Center again because it is clean, comfortable and a welcoming place to eat, shop and just browse! read more

$7.99 for a combo plate that none of us wanted to finish- and sadly we bought two. Normally the kids and I pig out- comparing this to say, Panda Express, we will eat two combos and my kids will still be sniffing around for more because they love it so much. My son didn't ask for seconds- he didn't even finish one plate! The issue here was flavor- the total lack there of. I ordered orange chicken(should be a little spicy), lemon chicken(sweet), and teriyaki chicken with noodles and rice. I got a yellowish chicken dish which from tasting I could not guess what it was suppose to be. The second chicken dish had no sauce at all on it- it was just fried nuggets. The teriyaki was so watered down I could not tell there was sauce on it until I tried to pick up the box and saw half had leaked on my table from the bag - so clearly it was once on the chicken. The noodles were overcooked and bloated- I did not bother to try their rice. The egg rolls were all roll- no filling and the sauce was tasteless. They didn't even have fortune cookies! I finished my dinner with a mandarin orange- from home thanks! I should have listened to my guts when I walked in on Chinese New Year at 5:30pm and the place was empty and the food bins untouched that it was bad news and just gone to Panda but I was feeling lazy thinking about that horrible line! Now I know why every other store in the plaza had people in it except this place! Save yourself the trouble- eat elsewhere. read more

This place is delicious. It's a togo counter with convenient indoor/ outdoor seating. The food is always fresh and hot. As soon as they start to run low on a dish the attendent call an oder into the kitchen and more is made. Great place for lunch, there are several size combination box lunches to choose from, along with family and party sizes available. They lose one star because they have no vegan food and the only vegetarian dish is the egg foo young. BUT It is the Most Amazing egg foo young ever. Yummm. Try this place-- I'm sure you'll enjoy it. This place is like a Chinese restaurant geared toward the Midwest, not Napa. "Egg Rolls" are thickly breaded, not flaky whatsoever, with less than a teaspoon of vegetables/ filling each. Up to 1/4" of breading on those 'things '. What's worse is that I ordered hot and sour soup and habe no idea what I got. It looks kinda like hot and sour soup, although I'm not sure why there's orange peppers in it... it isn't spicy nor sour, it's as though they make it up as they go. I don't know why Napa has such HORRIBLE Chinese/Asian restaurants, but its darn sad, and I'm incredibly disappointed in this place. Whoever replaced Peking Palace with Napkins should be ashamed. Hop Hing's is a local chain with other locations in Fairfield&Vallejo. Their dishes are OK- they make excellent chow mein, their orange chicken is alright, as is their fried rice. I'm curious about trying their Mongolian shrimp (despite the fact that Mongolia lacks oceanic views) The restaurant itself is a rather drab, depressing place. First of all, Chinese food does not exist in Napa Valley, ALL of them caters to the dumbed down American palate. When I want real Chinese food, I have to drive 40 minutes to Richmond, where I will find a 99 Ranch Market and all the restaurants in the same plaza.
