I would say most of the Sri Lankan dishes I know are either exactly the same, or variations, of South Indian food. Hoppers boasts of a lot of the classic favorites of South India along with bringing hoppers (what most know as appams) to the scene. I don't think I've ever ordered an appam outside India, but seeing as it's the restaurant's namesake, I gave it a shot. Dishes The menu lends itself nicely to family style ordering. We got a bunch of hoppers, a couple dosas, and a kothu paratha along with some curries. The hoppers were great! They were light and fluffy. I got one with an egg cracked into the middle so it was a nice sunny side egg that you could dip into. The crab curry was dope af. It was spicy, and super tasty. It had a homely feel to it with its coarsely chopped onions, ginger, and garlic. It felt like something I whip up at home when I'm feeling homesick. The crab was used mostly for flavor and not its meat as the waiter informed us. There was maybe one big meaty piece, but the rest of the pieces had little meet under its shell. Completely polished it off. The prawn curry was pretty bad. It literally just tasted like raw tamarind paste mixed with water and some prawns added to it. I don't think any of us liked it as it remained largely untouched after the first serving. Would not recommend. We also got the vegetarians kothu paratha. It was a great standalone dish but was even better with the crab curry. It was super flaky, crispy, and very flavorful. There was a healthy portion of veggies in it too. Great for sharing as it's pretty massive. I will definitely be exploring the other kothu parathas on the menu. Would I come back? Definitely! There's tons more to try on the menu. I'm definitely getting a biryani next time and the seafood kothu paratha! read more

The food at Hoppers is fantastic! The only thing that beats that is their great service. We got a table outside and they were only serving their snacks menu outside that day. And when we requested, Sai decided to let us order from the extended menu! I was so glad because our 2 yr old had been screaming for a dosa all the way to the restaurant. We ordered the lamb roles, chilli paneer with our drinks - both of the dishes were excellent. We ended up reordering them thrice that day. I can't believe the banana chips were freshly made!! They were warm when we got them. What a treat. The lamb curry was delicious. The meat was so succulent and falling off the bone. It complimented the Hoppers and the dosas perfectly. What a great new restaurant just off oxford street. Food- amazing amazing amazing. If you are like me who loves flavors, modern settings and excellent service then Hoppers should be on your top list of restaurants in London. Service- was unobtrusive yet attentive. We got a private alcove for 8 of us where we could just relax, chat and enjoy their scrumptious srilankan delicacies. Both veggie and seafood eaters will be equally amazed. Dishes you should try- Their pickles are out of this world. Spiced squid, idli with chutneys and of course the hoppers. Price- just under £300 for 8 of us with wine? Wow it can't get better than that especially on a Friday night. We sat down just after 8 pm and stayed till 11 about 11 ish. My friends and I arrived at Hoppers early Saturday evening in anticipation of a long wait, but surprisingly there was no line and we had the delight of eating dinner around 5pm. We opted for the hopper feast, for which one simply picks a carb and entree to complement the pre-set appetizers. The appetizers were the highlight of the meal: The bone marrow was the most special, especially paired with the spice-filled sauce that we scooped up to eat with other entrees even after finishing the marrow. The lamb kothu roti, which is essentially roti pieces stir-fried like noodles with meat, egg, and green onion (kind of like pad see ew), was my favorite. It also came in a large portion and was probably the culprit of filling us up prematurely. I would also recommend the chili squid, a nice break from the red meat. Even the banana chips were ultra crispy and delightfully salty, much more tasty than the typical banana chip, which is thick and just, well, banana flavored. Even though we were feeling overwhelmed by the appetizers, we gathered our strength and tackled the entrees. Before they came out a waiter dropped by with what he said was lamb kothi roti plate two out of three which scared us, but it turns out that they were just very confused and must've gotten orders mixed up. Out of the entrees, the chicken curry tasted the best. As for the namesake item, I'm not sure what the draw of the hopper is, as it seems exactly like a dosa but in a bowl shape. My favorite was the flaky oily roti, not a surprise. Overall, Hoppers delivers strong fusion flavors in a classy environment. Will definitely remember the lamb kothu roti! read more

It was my first time trying Sri Lankan food! I got the Express Lunch that's offered on weekdays for 19.50 pounds. It included a choice between: Mutton Roll or vegetable cutlet Lamb kothu roti or veg kothu roti Hopper or dosa + choice of kari Sambols or chutneys Sweet frothy kaapi or sweet metre tea It comes in a set menu, kind of like a mini tasting menu, with small little ramekin-size dishes. I ended up getting the mutton roll, lamb roti, hopper, and all of the sambol and chutney assortment. The mutton roll had tender lamb on the inside, and covered with deep fried batter on the outside. This was the appetizer portion, and not my favorite out of the options. I loved the Lamb Kothu Roti, which was a stir-fry type dish with lamb. I usually never order lamb, but wanted to try it here, since it seemed like an important part of their menu. The lamb was SO tender and not gamey at all. I guess they used a different type of lamb, or different part of the lamb from the mutton roll?! But I loved it. It was very tender, lots of fat content in it. Next came the hopper and your curry of choice (I got the chicken kari), and I had no clue how to eat it. The hopper is a mixture between a crepe and pancake (or so it seems!) that's in a bowl-shape. Basically, to eat it, you just tear the hopper into pieces, I guess similar to how you'd rip apart pita bread to dip into hummus. So after you tear the hopper, you eat it with the curry. VERY good. I loved the curry!!! I think next time though, I'd try the hopper with the egg inside...I bet it was okay to upgrade, but I just didn't think of it until afterwards. Also, this hopper dish is served with all the sambols and chutneys, which are other sweet, spicy, smokey dips that you can dip the hopper into. They are served similar to how you'd eat Banchan at a Korean restaurant, in tiny small ramekin-size dishes. So delicious, and so fun to try them all. I guess they didn't give me the drink since I ordered a coca cola? Hmm...I wish they offered it to me! The service was pretty slow. I was literally the first person in the restaurant when it opened at 12pm, and didn't get my food until about 12:15 or 12:20pm. They said there was something wrong with their computer system? They did apologize but should have made up for it in some way, such as a free drink or appetizer. Now thinking about it more, I wish my waiter gave me the option to upgrade to an egg hopper (I would've been happy to pay more for the option), gave me the option to have the tea or coffee since it was part of the lunch set, and made up for the slow service during my meal. Perhaps you have a long list of Tamil-Sri Lankan restaurants among your favorites. However, if this cuisine - similar to Indian but with delightful distinctions - is not one with which you are familiar, you would do well start your exploration at Hoppers in Marylebone. On a brisk February evening in London, a colleague and I were walking to St. Christopher's Place when we noticed Hoppers. As we were perusing the sidewalk menu, a man appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and said to us in a low but convincing voice "[y]ou must eat here. There is no other place to go. You will be happy." Despite the strong endorsement, the whole Twin Peaks-ian feel of the moment, and the tacit threat of unhappiness should we eat elsewhere, we did a lap around the block and decided that we did, in fact, need to try Hoppers and its intriguing, exotic offerings. Although quite busy for a Monday night, the staff was able to seat us immediately. The inviting interior is cozy but not cramped with a cool vibe. In addition to traditional tables, there is a table-height bar facing the windows, perhaps perfect for the individual diner or a party who likes to people-watch. There seems to be seating in a basement. The menu consists of both large plates (e.g., biryani) and many small plates (e.g., kari, roti) which are similar to other, neighboring South Asian fare (kari = curry) but definitely with a Tamil twist. The staff was extremely helpful. In helping navigate the menu, suggesting ordering a variety of items and creating your own tasting platter, which is made feasible as some dishes are small but are priced fairly. The key recommendation is to order the hopper, the namesake bread of the restaurant. Despite haven had a wide-variety of Asian fare over the decades, I have never encountered a hopper before and it is a must-try. The hopper is a unique bread offering that somehow is baked into a near-perfect semi-sphere. The half-bowl shape has delicate and crispy sides and a soft, spongy bottom making it a worthy carrier for chutneys or surplus kari sauce. Another must-have is the roti dish. I was fully expecting the greasy, gluten-abundant pancake that seems to have become the rage in American pseudo-Asian restaurants. To our surprise, it was a fascinating take on stir fry - highly chopped with abundant vegetables and a savory seasoning - that we learned was Sri Lankan street food. When in London, I would strongly recommend you find your way to Hoppers. In the words of the wise stranger, you must eat here. You will be happy. read more

Wandered in here thinking it was Indian food, looked at the menu and quickly had to start googling the menu. Never had Sri Lanken food before. Ended up getting: veggie roti (great), deviled squid (ok), a hopper (good and different), some dosa filled with potato (good), chicken Kari/curry (good but one spot of undercooked in a piece) and shrimp Kari (very good). When the first one arrived, we politely passed it around and made delicate tears at the crispy material surrounding the deep-fried egg in the center. We were hungry (some border-line hangry), but all of us withheld ourselves from immediately devouring the food laid out in front of us. By the time the second hopper arrived, the 8 people had already evenly split the first one chewing away barely mumbling out of full-mouths, wondering how the crispy fried egg-whites could be so perfectly fried into the flakiness of the surrounding rice-and-coconut-batter made godliness. The third one came with a distinct drop in momentum and we began to feel a creeping sensation that we may have ordered a bit too much. This one kind of just sat there as we moved from quantity to the quality of the flavors: Chicken Kari and Cauliflower Kari covered our plates, Kothu Rotis scooped with spoons that weren't quite big enough. No one really even noticed the fourth one, and by the time the fifth one arrived - excitement had turned to fear. "HOW MANY EGG HOPPERS DID WE GET?" "Well...one per person, minus the Masala Dosa for the Vegan." "DAMN." We ate the lamb-shank, tasted the massively spicy idli, and crushed the deep-fried squid all as a counter-drop to the crescendo of hoppers that kept magically appearing at our table. At some point, the food became too spicy and those who had held-out from ordering the chai tea instead decided on Mango Slushie's (which basically were a more solid version of a mango lassi) to cut the heat. By the time the last hopper had arrived on the table, it had been bequeathed onto someone all-together. "Dude, stop breaking it apart. That one's yours, eat the whole thing." Some see hoppers as a lighter alternative to naan. Not when you do it like we did though. read more

The food at Hoppers is amazing. It's not your typical food. This is real Sri Lankan food, down to the bottle of water served in Sri Lankan "Arrack" bottles in a beautiful pink glass. The dishes are based around the Hoppers where you can order a Hopper and some side dishes to go with them. The menu is quite clear and you can also get an allergy version. They also have rice and Dosas. If you're looking for a different cuisine, this is definitely a good restaurant to try something new. The Pol Sambol and Seeni Sambol make amazing dips. They also had a Beetroot and Kale Sambol that was like a flavour explosion in your mouth. If you like Idlis, theirs come in a little pot as if the Idli was an island surrounded by a sea of Sambhar. Says you can only book for groups of 4+ but allowed us to book for 3 so not sure what happened there. Decor isn't anything special, very small place, quite loud, very small tables that are too small for the food if there are more than two of you. Tried to order a meat feast for 2 and a vegetarian gluten free meal for 1 - very helpful on the gluten free issue and gave a copy of the menu with what I thought was red highlights of what was gluten free but turned out to be red highlights showing what I couldn't eat (would have been nice to have been told this). Friends were told that even though the feasts - as it states on the menu - were for a minimum of 2 people, they couldn't order them as they had to be for the whole table. We asked why given a) it says for 2 people and 2 were ordering, and b) clearly I couldn't eat it. The server asked her manager who eventually agreed. There wasn't much guidance as to how much to order even when we asked so the two who got the feast ended up with way too much food whilst I had a tiny amount and I made the mistake of drenching it in tomato chutney which turned out to be hotter than the sun so I couldn't taste anything anyway. Service was over attentive and 3-4 different people kept asking if we were ok. The food was nothing special. Wouldn't go back but would try hoppers the food again somewhere else.
