Fun little divey diner bar! I've visited a handful of times. Overall, it's a cool bar to meet with friends over a beer or mixed drinks and bar food while watching sports. The waitresses all seem pleasant and good at what they do. The service from the bar, however is quite slow. Each time I've eaten here, we've never received our bar order in a timely manner. The menu offers lots of choices including burgers, sandwiches, wings, and a variety of other options. When fried well, the 1/2 Fish 1/2 Shrimp is my favorite order. The seafood is always fresh and the coleslaw is tasty. Prices are reasonable. They offer daily food and drink specials. There's a fairly nice-sized parking lot. Keep in mind, the place gets crowded. Most everything. Our server was nice but had no knowledge of menu. We were told there was a 1.50 charge for baked potato which menu clearly stated otherwise. Baked potato for half of our party of 7 came quite awhile after the prime rib. Nachos were served burnt with liquid cheese. Cook came around and said they shouldn't have been served. Would only take half of the bill. I have never been charged gratuity in a neighborhood bar. Needless to say you lost 7 customers. I went here to meet up with a friend. It is a easy to miss but easy to find once you have been here. It has a local urban bar feel with a casual atmosphere. You pretty much come in and seat yourself at the bar or a table. There are TVs in various booths and also music playing. The waitress served me quickly. I ordered mushrooms and a drink while waiting for my friend. They give you a lot of food. The mushrooms were fried and good. The drink was strong like a like a long island. I ordered wings and my friend got the steak. The wings were good but tasting the steak was even better. The price to get a large steak here is awesome. The waitress was friendly. It's a nice place to chill and get a meal and drink while listening to music. I will check it out again in the future. read more

This is a spot is perfect for some good bar food. I came in the middle of the afternoon after a flight. I was hungry after getting off of the plane so I decided to try this spot out. The food was really good. I had the corned beef sandwich and chili cheese fries. And my friend had the wings. Everything was 10/10. Our waitress was very nice. To drink we had long islands .. and if you're looking for a spot with strong drinks ... this is definitely the place ! Sadly, this is not the Hops and Barley we once knew and loved. They use to have drink specials everyday, beer specials daily, along with the dinner deals. Service was mmkay, but food and drinks were gross and the cleanliness left a little to be desired. The prime rib, was rancid. I smelled something off as soon as it hit the table. The fat smelled, and the taste, it was bad. It had turned, and if it was noticeable after cooking, then it was noticeable before and they should be ashamed for sending it out. My husbands piece looked like it sat in blood and then got plated. I work in food safety and education. I have worked in food service, and theres no way that should have gotten past the cooks, kitchen manager, food expeditor nor waitress. The plate was lazy, corn was served in corn water in a ramekin. The only edible thing would have been potatoes. We sent it back, paid for drinks and left. read more

(Visited 1/7/2020.) In town on business and it's now after work... that means playtime! Lol. So I got a few of my friends together to meet here because I've heard good things, so here goes! Atmosphere/Appearance: Set out in Melvindale is this spectacular dive bar. It looks like a big house with it's own private parking lot so it won't be hard to miss. Inside is fairly basic. There are lots of high-top tables in the middle and a Touchtunes box to put on all of your favorite jams. The bar is right at the back of the restaurant and there's a really long table that's on a pedestal that can seat 10 people. Again, it's a dive/sports bar so it's simply a great place for a simple meal and to get together with your friends. Service: I can't remember the young lady that took care of all 12 of us, but she was awesome. We had her running all over the place but she did not miss a beat! Service is solid. Food: I don't remember having much to eat here, but I definitely did some drinking! Lol. The drinks were SO STRONG and they still had some taste to them. I may have had a wing or 2 here and there, but I had no complaints! Value: CHEAP. I mean, it's a dive bar. They're not allowed to serve expensive things. Lol. This is a great neighborhood divey spot that is a favorite to friends that I have that come from the area. I was surprised to see couples with children in tow in this type of establishment given the alcohol that was prevalent and strewn about the tables. There are daily specials offered. Three that I have had are the Prime Rib (Tuesdays), Steak (Thursdays), and AYCE Fish & Chips (Fridays). The service has been consistent on the occasions that I've been there considering the crowd. The portions are huge which complimentary to the beverage offering of flavored margaritas and daiquiris. Excellent spot to kick back and relax after a long work day. read more

Their menu is VERY large for a bar - I ordered a BBQ bacon burger and my friend ordered the steak special. So I guess they are known for their lovely specials and $1 beers (jackpot). They also have TVs available at the tables in case you aren't pointing in the direction of one. Staff seems to be slow when you first come in - no one greeting or any sign saying seat ur and then someone will be with u. Luckily my friends knew - it took about 10mins to be served but after that she kept checking, maybe to make up for the wait. Food was good - not cheap but at least its filling. **Asking for the APPLE PIE in a jar. ($8). Its a large shot in a jar - drink it fast and you'll see why its called apple pie. :) read more

Hop's is a decent lunch spot, which is all I can speak to. The menu has a good selection with Wheat & Rye size portions. My go to is the Chicken Caesar Wrap. The chicken is never dry, the greens are fresh and the dressing is great. $9.00 makes it deluxe with thick fries and homemade soup. Lunch customers are about 70% auto/steel mill/refinery employees and they get a good crowd. Great specials (Tuesday is $5.95 steak) and they pull in plenty of repeat customers. Came here because of a few recommendations and I can say it didn't disappoint. This is a bar a grill, although they say you can bring kids, it personally seem more like an all adult bar than anything. Second thing is there drinks. They run different cheap drink specials everyday (I will be back for the dollar draft beers on Wednesday). I did have a Long Island and it was only $5, super strong, and about 24 ounces and good. As for the food, their menu is a huge menu for a bar and full of choices. I tried a few food items: bacon mini burgers (pretty good), onion rings (really good and my future go to side item), Cajun fries (good), wings (pretty good and your normal Coney Island type wings) and a chicken Caesar wrap (ok, could be better). They also give you massive size portions for your money (very cheap prices). Overall great value and a really good place, I will be back (especially to try their 20 oz porterhouse for $13). read more

The only complaint I had was that stools were the wildly uncomfortable. $3.50 frozen alcohol drink special!!! Wow. Their jumbo grilled cheese is basically two Texas toast grilled cheeses next to each other. The onion rings were crispy and delicious. We had a great time in there. All of us enjoyed what we ordered sitting atop our creaky wooden stools and talking over the general bar buzz. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! Went here a few weeks ago. Sat there for 15 minutes while the server walked past us several times. Finally I asked if we were going to get waited on. The server with the long pony tail asked if we were waiting long and I said yes! The others that I was with got fed up and said let's go somewhere else. I asked the server with red hair, who had walked past us and went on the side texting on her phone and drinking her drink, why she couldn't wait on us. Her answer was so stupid. She said her and pony tail were splitting the tables. REALLY??? Red hair was waiting on the entire section we were in and totally ignored us. Never once acknowledged us in any way. Someone told me that red hair now has black hair with a little red in the back. The person said they walked in, and saw her still working there and walked back out. I put a complaint on their site and they deleted it. Obviously, they don't care!! Guess we won't go there again. read more

The food here is really good, if you do not like alot of noise this won't be the place for you because it is quite loud but every Thursday they have steak night for $5.95 and I will tell u the steak is worth it, if u get here late than 5pm u might have to look for a seat but that's because everyone knows how good it is, u get a good sized steak, corn and a fully loaded baked potato. A couple of my friends live by this place so I go there every once in a while. Late last week I patronized the place for a week-night drunk 'fest. It's a nicer bar than one would expect for the area....nice wood floors, wood bar and high ceilings. I've never had super bad service in there, but my friends who are regulars go in there a lot so that can sometimes = biased but certainly not always. The only slight issue was that I felt the bartender chick was a little rude. I am normally not catty like this, but she was rude so that means I have free reign to low-blow (in my mind anyway). Dear cranky bartender chick: shave the 'stache, I could see it from my table. That girl was sporting more hair than a young hot chick's upper lip should ever see. We were told that she was new though....still no reason to be a buzz-kill. And buzz was what we got. Shots were a-flowing. They have dollar food specials (during happy hour maybe?) where you can get a variety of bar foods for a buck. Smaller portions of course. One night last winter we all spend $2-3 each on food and our table was chock full of fried goodies, tacos, nachos, etc. It was amazing. Thursday night I ordered a $3.95 chicken gyro and it hit the spot. Not the best gyro ever but it's a bar in Melvindale, not Greektown, so I wasn't expecting it to be mind-blowing. Drink prices seem average, and they had beer specials when I was there. Crowd is pretty local, a lot of people who go there seem to know each other, and every time I've gone here it's been pretty steady/busy....except the one Memorial Day of 2009 when my friend and I came in after practically hijacking an ice cream truck, lifting beef sticks from a local party store, and coming here for a shot of Goldschlager (yes, they still make that stuff YUK!)....but let's not talk about that right now. So I came here last week Saturday for a bday dinner. My father who knows every restauraunt from here to Illinois suggested this place because they have all you can eat king crab legs for $40 on Saturday and that's what my sister was looking for to celebrate her bday!! So let's start my review: 1. Because the Southfield freeway was closed it took a while for me to get here, not my usual side of town. But that's not their fault. The bar is right off Allen Road so you can't miss it. 2. The king crab legs were actually delish and you are definitely getting your money's worth if you are in the mood for crab. Think about it you go to red lobster and pay $28-$30 for a seafood "feast" that is mediocre at best so for a few bucks more and unlimited amounts you are #WINNING. Only catch is there is no sharing allowed!! They also have all you can eat peel and eat shrimp in different flavors as well for $25. 3. I actually wasn't in the mood for crab so I had the philly steak and cheese which was amazing....seems like everything on the menu is huge. Most items looked delicious, and are shareable I couldn't eat that whole thing on my own. 4. Ehhh the waitresses were the main drawback for me. They weren't very pleasant to anyone and never smiled. So they can be improved upon. 5. They had an awesome jukebox here...and the crowd was not pretentious. My father said they offer great specials on food throughout the week, and I would go back if I was on this side of town near Dearborn and wanted a good place to eat. I say check it out!! read more

Well, I will not let bad waitressing pull this place all the way down, but it is definately going to knock down what would have been a 4 star spot. For the location and the reputation of the all the bars in this area, this place is a cut above the rest. Nothing spectacular, but probably the best bar Melvindale will ever see. The place is clean and is not overly decorated like many bars are. It is a step up from a dive... like a clean Wheat and Rye. The waitstaff seemed nice, and were nice through out, just lacking in comprehension. The order wasn't terrible, granted it was 6 people, that still only amounted to 6 burgers and fries. The problem came with the toppings. When the burgers came to the table they were all loaded with stuff, none of which anyone ordered. As we sat there playing burger swap for a moment the 2 waitresses stood at the table looking confused and guilty, and like they were hoping we wouldn't raise a stink about the completely botched order. We didn't raise a stink either, we ate what we got, and let the waitresses pitifully sink away. We still enjoyed ourselves, and the mishap just added a few more good laughs. They got off easy I think as most other people would have flew off the bin about an order like that. On a great note they have some huge long islands and long beachs for like 3 bucks on Sundays. The burger was good even if it wasn't what I ordered. They also have a dollar menu of stuff for the economical eaters. I need to go back in on like a tuesday by myself to really see what the place is really about when tehy are not slammed and over whelmed. read more

Best food ever, but not so great service. The hops and barley original burger is great. Good enough to keep me coming back despite consistently bad service. The server's trips to the table are few and far between no matter how many people are in the bar and the food takes about half an hour to arrive even when we were told our order was first in line. Carry out isn't much better, unfortunately. You'll stand around at the bar until someone finally acknowledges you, then you're waiting so long for your order you might as well get a couple of beers. If you love a good bar burger, this place is a must. Just don't go if your stomach is already growling. *UPDATE* The last few times we've gone there, we haven't had much of an issue with service, so we're going to bump it up a star. read more

Came out of town from LA- was expecting a seedy, greasy dining experience, given that this was the only place open nearby. What we got instead was friendly servers, great prices, and delicious food at very generous portions. They have a wide menu, and both the Fish and Chips and BLT we got were phenomenal! So last night two of my good girlfriends and myself went to this bar . Hands down this has been one of the worst experience that I have experienced in a very long time . The service was horrible the food was even worse . They served a steak that was so rubbery and dried out it was horrible . The mashed potatoes and gravy had a Tangy taste to it and it was all brown and old look like it had been sitting for about 3 days and they served it to us . When We complain to the bar manager / security guard he had no interest in what the complaint was about only thing he cared about was getting my number . He is definitely not fit to run a restaurant let alone a bar . He tried to bribe us with a shot of liquor to not do this Yelp review . Just terrible I recommend no one to visit and spend your money here it's not worth it . Service is terrible, drinks are getting weaker and weaker and the night bartenders are rude, short staffed and I got to this bar at 4:20 pm, had 1 drink, never was asked if I wanted a refill or whether I wanted to order food so... I finally left at 5:15pm...terrible...don't waste your time with the night time crew! Was my first time coming to Hops & Barley Bar & Grill and it was a good experience except that the waitress who served me didn't come and ask what I wanted for about 10 minutes. When she did come she was very nice and asked what I wanted to drink and told me the drink specials. I ordered a pitcher which was only $5 and it hit the spot good.. The food menu was amazing. Lot's of food to choice from and reasonable prices. I got the $5 Hops burger and it was very filling and cooked well. I've only been here a couple of times and each time, I do say I need to make a point to stop in more often. It's a nice sized, tucked away bar/restaurant. The bar rail is long and the dining room is a decent size. It's split with booths and tall/short tables. I just went in for a carry out and a drink while I waited. The bartender was really friendly and took good care of me and the other person at the bar, who seemed to be a regular based on the sound familiarity. Their menu is huge. No, not just a huge selections of items... I mean, that, too... but it's physically HUGE. But there are a LOT of things on the menu. Huge variety of dishes. The bar seemed to have a big selection of liquor, also. They even had Not Your Father's Rootbeer! Which is not as hard to find as it used to be, but it's always pleasant when someone has it. I ordered a Porterhouse steak (medium) to-go. By the way, there is a .25 (I think per item) charge for carry-out orders. That's silly. I believe one of the specials of the day had a $2.00 carry-out fee. Wait, what? Anyway, the Porterhouse had good flavor, but was a tad bit tough. No biggie, though. It came with a giant piece of garlic toast, which was good. They sent two small containers of steak sauce, which was generous. Overall, I'd love to make a point to go back more often. We love this place. It's a dive bar so don't expect fine cuisine, but we have honestly never had a bad meal here. The homemade soup is awesome...chicken pot pie, beef stew, chicken tortilla...it's all fabulous. The steak and prime rib specials can't be beat. Beer is a buck on weds so we go then. Killians for a buck? Can't beat it. We usually sit at the bar, so service isn't an issue but it can be slow. But the prices are great and the portions are enormous.
