If Yelp had a zero-star option, that's what this would get. I flew 2,300 miles from Los Angeles to Michigan's Upper Peninsula for our annual golf trip with 20 guys from Michigan and Wisconsin. We wanted one great steakhouse dinner to cap off the weekend, but instead, we got one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. Since many local steakhouses don't take reservations, we ended up at Horizons Steakhouse inside Island Resort & Casino. At first, we were excited--a 20-ounce ribeye was around $70, and they even advertised a 32-ounce Tomahawk for $150. What arrived was almost unbelievable. The "American Wagyu" had no marbling. The ribeye had no sear and was not well seasoned. They weren't just underwhelming--they looked like low-grade (Select) steaks with thick, untrimmed fat around the edges instead of actual marbling. Everyone at the table reached for salt and pepper just to make them edible--but that didn't work for long. Then came the Tomahawk (a ribeye, but with a large bone still in it). It looked half the size of the 20-ounce ribeye sitting next to it. When we questioned it, the manager admitted the actual meat was only about 16 ounces. The rest of the advertised "32 ounces" was simply the giant bone. Think about that: A 20-ounce ribeye cost $70. A smaller ribeye attached to a bone cost $150. I've ordered Tomahawks all over the country, and I've never seen one marketed this way. It felt incredibly misleading--and the disappointment didn't stop there. The asparagus had a strange chemical flavor that literally reminded several of us of charcoal lighter fluid and artificial (liquid) smoke. We mentioned it, and the manager acknowledged they had received similar complaints before--not only about the asparagus, but about the steaks as well. That was the most disappointing part--not that something went wrong, but that management already knew people were saying the same things... and nothing appeared it was going to change, not even have changes considered. To their credit, the manager removed the Tomahawk & other steaks and things from our bill and tried to make things right. Our waitress was tipped well, regardless. Unfortunately, the replacement pork tenderloin wasn't any better. It had no real sear and was so dry it was like eating a pork cotton ball. You'd think that after having to remove hundreds of dollars from our bill already, they would've taken special care to make this one right. They didn't. For context, I owned a barbecue catering company for years, graduated from culinary school, and now develop my own seasoning blends and sauces. I'm not expecting every steakhouse to be Peter Luger or Bern's Steak House, but I am expecting a restaurant charging $70-$150 per steak to know how to source quality beef, season it, and put a proper crust on it--that's the BASELINE. Ironically, the only dinner food anyone at our table agreed was excellent... was the French-style carrots--the very side dish the manager told us NOT to order because she didn't think they were good. And we did get a few desserts that were obviously made by someone other than the "grill master" because they were excellent! That pretty much summed up the entire experience. We left wondering how a restaurant charging premium steakhouse prices could deliver food that would struggle to compete with the lowest end chain restaurants--I promise a Denny's T-Bone steak and eggs BLOWS this "steakhouse" away. Some people confuse expensive with exceptional--this restaurant is counting on it! A fancy dining room can't hide less than Walmart-caliber (non dry-aged) beef. If you think this is a five-star steakhouse, you've probably never been to one--because the only thing premium about this place is the prices. Next year's golf trip will absolutely NOT include this place. read more

Beautiful views from the 12th floor surrounded by nothing but pure nature as far as you can see. This doesn't feel like the deep north woods of upper Michigan while enjoying first class dining that would be highly desirable in any high end location in the country. The lobster bisque was perhaps the BEST I've ever had. The steakhouse salad in cherry vinaigrette had a very subtle flavor but balance well. The T-bone was cooked perfectly to medium rare and married well with the whipped garlic butter. The brussel sprouts were a little under done but were flavorful and perfectly sweet. The mushrooms risotto was a nice side but about what you'd expect so nothing special. My ONLY complaint was that the service was a little underwhelming. I waited for my coke to be refilled nearly 10 minutes each time. Waitress only check back on me once and another tattooed waitress completely ignored me when I attempted to get her attention. This is a nice surprise with flavorful dishes and beautiful views in a surprising location. read more

I came to the Island Resort in Upper Michigan for the golf, and I was pleasantly surprised to find a beautiful steakhouse on site! Horizons Steakhouse exceeded my expectations--especially after reading some mixed reviews. The view overlooking the forest and golf course is stunning and adds so much to the experience. We both ordered the filet, and it was cooked to perfection. I highly recommend starting with the steakhouse salad. For sides, the potatoes that came with the entrée were delicious, and the Brussels sprouts were incredible--crispy and full of flavor! Our waitress was wonderful--kind, attentive, and professional--even while handling a difficult table of older golfers nearby who were being completely rude to her. I wanted to say something, but honestly, the restaurant was too classy to make a scene. Yes, it's definitely on the pricey side, but in my opinion, it's worth every penny for the quality, service, and atmosphere. Would absolutely return! read more

Horizon Steakhouse - Steakhouses Near Me - Harris, Michigan

We went there on Friday night June 28th. I waited to see if I really hated it that much after a week's reflection.....Yep I still am mad about this. This steakhouse was new to me since my last visit. This place has a view and that is it, everything else is subpar for a steakhouse. Ambiance is like being in a cafeteria Bar is too small and poorly located as a party of 8-10 fills up the bar and you are left standing around it. This causes you to be in the way of the waitresses using the area as a thoroughfare from the kitchen to the dining room as a shortcut. Food is overpriced and poorly done. They must have a smoke machine and used it to flavor a variety on menu items from the burger slider app (overcooked) to the side of scallops (tiny, mushy, and gross). The bread was the best part, although cutting at the table with the parmesan cooked crust made one hell of a mess. Bread this messy should be cut in the back of house and presented. My entrée was "Lobster Mac and a side of Scallops" (see picture). This was not what I was expecting, the scallops were a joke. they were mushy in texture (sous vide?) the size of them were the size you use for soup, stews and salads, not a main course. They also were smoked and tasted like licking a grill grate). The stick presentation also shows a lack of effort. The lobster in the mac and cheese must have just been boiled in the same water and it didn't taste at all like lobster was in it and it didn't have much if any meat in it. My daughter ordered the filet medium rare. It came to the table and jiggled when it was put down it was so raw it was purple inside. We sent it back. My wife had the Filet Oscar. it was presented with a cut up fillet, I have never seen that presentation before and now I know why, it was dry and looked overcooked steak.....Garbage. I am going back in August with a company putting on a golf and play package for about 80 people. I will be telling the organizers to avoid anyone spending any money in that steak house, as it is horrible. Go to the Stonehouse in Escanaba if you want steak. Heck the Reef pizza would be 100% better than this place. read more

the atmosphere of this restaurant is very nice. the 360 view of the golf course and beyond is very scenic. the dining room is not very large, but comfortable. My husband and I went last night to celebrate our anniversary. we were seated not too far from the entrance/exit of the kitchen. we could overhear workers cussing in the kitchen and banging dishes and emptying garbages: not the ambience I was wanting. we ordered--service was good. We both got the lobster bisque. the soup was good tasting but not very hot, more like luke warm. I told the waiter. I ordered the seafood pasta. the sauce, although flavorful, was like soup broth, I found it strange. my husbands steak was very good. if you want to have a nice. expensive dinner that is 100% worth what you will pay--maybe consider somewhere else. if you are ok with ok and easy access to the casino and golf--then this will work. read more

We dined here while staying at the Island Resort. I asked what kind if bourbon they had at the bar. They had Jack Daniel's and another brand I've never heard of. They served beer in cans. I felt the bar didn't meet the steakhouse atmosphere. The sports bar in the casino has a larger selection. They served us delicious warm fresh bread. My husband ordered the French Onion Soup and said it was very good. I had an 8oz Filet with sauteed mushrooms. I ordered it medium plus. The waitress was confused so a butterflied medium well it was. My husband had the 8 oz sirloin. The steaks had an interesting red wine flavor. We're not wine drinkers and didn't care for the flavor. The steak itself was high quality. All steaks are served with a choice of two sides. They have 8 sides to choose from, half of them are potatoes. The other four options are grilled asparagus, rice pilaf, bourbon heirloom carrots and balsamic broccolini. I had the garlic mashed and carrots. The carrots were sweet and in interesting colors (black, white, yellow, etc). They didn't have any bourbon flavor. I wish a normal house salad could be a side option. We'll definitely dine there again when we stay there. I think we'd both order something other than steak. read more

Food Is very overpriced and tasteless. Salad no better than a Wendy's side salad. My husband's $42 ribeye looked and tasted like a round steak cooked in a skillet. I had tasteless rubbery prawns with risotto that I swear was Minute rice. We won't be back. Wish we'd just had q pizza. read more

Went to dinner with low expectations because of the two unfavorable reviews herein. I was in a group of twelve "senior" golfers who all can afford to eat anywhere and have, so there was considerable culinary experience within the group. The major observation I would make is this is a steakhouse as its name makes plain and it's rather foolish to compare its "variety" with a marvelous restaurant like the Stone House in nearby Escanaba. There were plenty of beef options and several seafood dinners available as well as plenty choices of sides. Every diner in our large group who ordered steak (the majority) were pleased that the high quality meat was cooked "exactly as they had ordered it". Service was very good, all handled by one waitress who took very good care of us with only a small amount of assistance with food delivery. Her work was complimented upon by many in the group. The meal was not cheap but was a better value than most "steakhouses" our group has encountered around the world. One plus was there were multiple choices of steak sizes including an 8 ounce strip as well as an 8 ounce filet, so expensive beef did not go to waste in a group with no facilities for "doggie bags". Even so, I regretted not having the small amount of steak I left behind in breakfast tacos the next morning. When in the area next year for this long running golf trip, we will try Horizon again and hope the experience we enjoyed is duplicated. read more

Prices went up; quanity and quality went down, depite moving on up to the top floor. Like the whole facility, excluding Sweet Grass Golf, the Island got too big for their britches - may as well go to Vegas and lose at any one of the numerous low-class operations run by MGM. Everyone is better off driving to the Ford River Pub on M-35 south of Escanaba for a significantly better meal at a reasonable price or going through Taco Bell in Escanaba. read more
