To start Horst Gasthaus is a german speciality place that serves German food such as german potato salad, schnizel, and more. they have a wide variety of veal, chicken and seafood dishes. Went here on Thursday February 12th 2026 with my parents, aunt, uncle and a few friends as a total party of 7. We did make a reservation online and highly recommend to do that. When we arrived, the parking lot was jam packed and we almost couldn't find a spot. However, we were luckily able to park in the back somewhere. This place is like a little house with german memoria on it. in the dining room, they also had an accordion player. When we walked in to the door, we waited about 6 -10 minutes for a host to greet us. When the host finally did, she sat us down right away. Then, we sit down and our server still didn't greet us until like 15 minutes or later. Now, i understand that they were busy- but acknowledge us, address us, take a moment to start us with waters. Although this gave us time to look over the menu if we didn't know what we wanted. Finally the waitress comes over and gets us 7 waters, and 6 beers. We also put in an order of Bratwurst, Bauernwurst, as well as the pretzel appetizer. Appetizers came out in a timely manner. I enjoyed the Bauernwurst, which i think is the one that tasted like hot dogs, as well as the pretzel. The pretzel was big and we did end up sharing it with the whole table. For Entrees, I ordered the chicken Jager with mushrooms and gravy with a side of german potato salad and string beans. The String beans were the vegetable of the day. Oh, and the waitress did a good job with telling us the specials and communicating once everything calmed down. Food seemed to take long to come out, but when it finally did, I enjoyed my Chicken Jager. Only issue is that some others in my party said that their sides/food was cold- even after warming it up a bit- which the waitress did try to fix at least. Maybe the heat lamp is broken, or the food isn't directly under it, I don't know but this should be improved upon. We were offered dessert but skipped it. We did separate checks for our party- which the waitress accomodated. Paid via credit card and left a cash tip. May be back again! read more

Although the food presentation looked good, the food was cold. It seemed like they must have made a large amount of food and put the pans under a food warmer light. Dished it out when ordered and served it. The bread was good but didn't seem like authentic German bread. Not impressed. I did check reviews before going. Would we go back idk. Had our traditional roast pork loin with mashed potatoes and saurkraut,; our "good luck meal " to ring in the new year.. meal was superb and our waiter Eddie was very efficient in keeping up with the crowd of people at the restaurant. Very important to make reservations. The restaurant fills up fast, and parking is minimal. We had to park across the street in a parking lot containing stores. Luckily the lot was empty for the holiday. Ambience is very nice, they had someone playing German popular songs on an accordion. Menu is very authentic German fare. We didn't feel like cooking so we did a coupon search for ideas. Found a BOGO entree one for Horst Gasthaus. We don't do German food often, not that many around us, so it was a perfect choice. The restaurant appears to be a converted house just off of Rt 17 behind another business. Parking is tight and they were busy. Outside doesn't look like much but the interior was nice with lots of themed tchotchkes on all the walls. The set up was definitely a house with the various rooms turned into various sized dining rooms and bars. It was busy looking but cozy. The service was quick and helpful in picking from a decent list of German beers. I settled on a Tucher Hefe Weizen which was very good. For dinner I had the Veal Jager Schnitzel with mushrooms. The Veal was very good. The German potato salad was, ok. The green beans were very soft and not really tasty. Of course it is subjective. I like a little bite to my veggies. Since it was our first time here and we have another coupon, I would try them out again. Will update at that time. read more

Reese & Joanna recommend this place for a Tuesday dinner. I've eaten German food in Munich and liked it for the most part. They highly recommended this place for their Pork Chop special. They serve it breaded and fried with a side of potato salad and cucumber salad. All meals are also served with a delicious rye bread. Their menu is broad and filled with many traditional german dishes. I was surprised that a German restaurant can do well in a Southern Tourist Mecca like NMB but they have been there since 1984. They have many large tables for bigger parties. It's a small parking lot, if you have a golf cart take it! They have live music Thursday thru Sat evening. If highly recommend a reservation. It's been a minute since we've been back, but being we have a German exchange student living with us, we thought we'd give it a try. What a great night! We were so lucky to have Bettina as our server First, she speaks German which was such a blessing. Ask for her if you dine here. Second, everything was exceptional. We started with the brezel appy, the Gasthouse plate and suppe. The Schweinshaxe was a special that I highly recommend. We also had the Swiss style chicken, pork cordon bleu and chicken parm. All went over well, including the mashed potatoes and rotkohl. They also had several Octoberfest options on tap. One of the best things about Horst Gasthaus is the ambience. I was very excited to try Horst Gasthaus because I love German food, and there are no authentic places where I live. The restaurant is decorated to make it feel like you are in Germany. Even our waitress was German and dressed in traditional clothes. We started with beer, wine, and soft pretzels with cheese. The wine was a nice German Riesling, and they are generous with the pour. We loved the pretzel, and the cheese was very tasty. You are served fresh rye bread and butter, which was also very good. I had their Wiener Schnitzel with spätzle and cucumber salad. Everything was amazing. The schnitzel was crispy and flavorful. The spazel was covered with a yummy gravy. The cucumber salad was light and complemented the heavy dishes. I also tried the bread dumpling and sausage, which were delicious as well. For dessert, we shared the German chocolate cake. It was really good. I heard about this place someone another person who lives in this area. It seems to have really good deals on dinner during happy hour. I went over yesterday and it was hard finding a spot to park. This was about 5 PM. Considering it opened at 4 PM, it looked like it was crowded. It was. There is a tiny bar that was full of people and noise. I then decided that I would get food to go. It did not look conducive to a one person table. I decided to order the senior dinner, which is pork chop with two sides. The waitress was very friendly and took my order while I stood in the doorway. There was no place else to go. It took about a half hour to get my food. The price was good. I like their mashed potatoes and gravy, the very good cucumber salad. They also gave me red cabbage, which I dumped before getting out of the car which mixed everything. By the time I got to eat my pork chop had cabbage juice. The pork chop was OK. I would've preferred a little more seasoning. I'm afraid I will have to give this place. Mathius "Matt" was our server and we were so pleased. He immediately welcomed us and shared the specials. He's new but was very knowledgeable. We went with Weiner Schnitzel and the Pork Schnitzel. We both had the delicious green beans while I had the creamy potatoes and my dad had the German potato salad. He was very happy. We went early , got an early bird discount, that was great.. I do hate giving a 5 star rating I picture the place packed and not being able to get in. We had the desert cheesecake it was great no strudel on Wednesday. The server said we should make reservations and make the strudel order when we made the reservation.. I had the plate which is an assortment of food all good , also had the goulash both were great.. New owner same great food, I was worried, I was not disappointed. This was delicious! We were looking for something different, and were not impressed with Old Vienna last year. So glad that we found Horst Gasthouse. Both types of sausage were divine, in particular the bauernwurst. We also ordered the chocolate mousse and the lemon cake, but I wasn't able to snap a photo in time before they were both devoured. The website does not have any info about making reservations, but they seem to take reservations by phone and not them down by hand. Will definitely be back at our next trip to the beach! read more

We went for my son's birthday this weekend. We enjoyed our meals but feel the food wasn't as good as in the past. My husband and son both had sauerbrauten and said something wasn't right. The food is REALLY good! It's authentic german, the staff are kind. BUT they have VERY limited hours, they OFTEN run out of the good food and the owner drinks on the job. He is a very nice man and will give out free yaeger shots at closing (which is 8pm). This is his retirement job hence the limited hours but if you make time to go during early hours before he is sold out, it will be the best food!! Truly authentic and I love it. First impressions are rather mixed. Like another reviewer stated, there's a weird smell when you enter the place and it's not the food. The decor is a mix of cultural fun with dated tackiness. It was a Saturday night and the live musical renditions from the accordion guy helped ease the mood a bit. The waitress was also fantastic and took good care of our party.
