We didn't feel like cooking so we did a coupon search for ideas. Found a BOGO entree one for Horst Gasthaus. We don't do German food often, not that many around us, so it was a perfect choice. The restaurant appears to be a converted house just off of Rt 17 behind another business. Parking is tight and they were busy. Outside doesn't look like much but the interior was nice with lots of themed tchotchkes on all the walls. The set up was definitely a house with the various rooms turned into various sized dining rooms and bars. It was busy looking but cozy. The service was quick and helpful in picking from a decent list of German beers. I settled on a Tucher Hefe Weizen which was very good. For dinner I had the Veal Jager Schnitzel with mushrooms. The Veal was very good. The German potato salad was, ok. The green beans were very soft and not really tasty. Of course it is subjective. I like a little bite to my veggies. Since it was our first time here and we have another coupon, I would try them out again. Will update at that time.

This place never disappoints. Absolutely love their Happy Hour! Pork chops are delicious and the spatzle hits the spot. I highly recommend this place. Nanette and Howard are awesome!

It's been a minute since we've been back, but being we have a German exchange student living with us, we thought we'd give it a try. What a great night! We were so lucky to have Bettina as our server First, she speaks German which was such a blessing. Ask for her if you dine here. Second, everything was exceptional. We started with the brezel appy, the Gasthouse plate and suppe. The Schweinshaxe was a special that I highly recommend. We also had the Swiss style chicken, pork cordon bleu and chicken parm. All went over well, including the mashed potatoes and rotkohl. They also had several Octoberfest options on tap. One of the best things about Horst Gasthaus is the ambience. Live tasteful accordion music on Th, Fr and Sa too. Es war eine Fantstic-Nacht!

Live music adds to the experience

If you like German food, this is the real deal The atmosphere & decor is reminiscent of being in Germany. Servers are dressed and individually designed authentic costumes. Iced t cold boots of beer, a good selection of German wine, live accordion music, and great food. I recommend the fried pork chops.

I was very excited to try Horst Gasthaus because I love German food, and there are no authentic places where I live. The restaurant is decorated to make it feel like you are in Germany. Even our waitress was German and dressed in traditional clothes. We started with beer, wine, and soft pretzels with cheese. The wine was a nice German Riesling, and they are generous with the pour. We loved the pretzel, and the cheese was very tasty. You are served fresh rye bread and butter, which was also very good. I had their Wiener Schnitzel with spätzle and cucumber salad. Everything was amazing. The schnitzel was crispy and flavorful. The spazel was covered with a yummy gravy. The cucumber salad was light and complemented the heavy dishes. I also tried the bread dumpling and sausage, which were delicious as well. For dessert, we shared the German chocolate cake. It was really good. Based on how popular they are, I would make a reservation.

    Our entertainment for the evening.

Mathius "Matt" was our server and we were so pleased. He immediately welcomed us and shared the specials. He's new but was very knowledgeable. We went with Weiner Schnitzel and the Pork Schnitzel. We both had the delicious green beans while I had the creamy potatoes and my dad had the German potato salad. He was very happy. The entertainment by Pat was so special and was nice that he took requests. All in all, the atmosphere and decor is great and the service and the food was really good. We will definitely be back and bring our family and friends.

    Happy monsters.

Wow! The kids ate everything. I enjoyed an elderberry martoonie while the male folk sipped their larger German beers. Had an assortment of all the things. Pam was an amazing server she made lovely recommendations and was kind and funny. Happy hour offers $1 off drinks and $2 pork chops (@ bar only) 4-6 pm. They do not take discover cards. Can not wait to return. The seating was generous and the posters, stencil vines, and decorations made this a whole wonderful experience.

Our order was enormous, the portions are fit for a king - a belt loosening feast was had by all! The food was very good and authentic. The potato salad was delicious, the cabbage, the kraut, the spaetzel, the potato pancakes, the beef, the pork, the fish, the lemon berry mascarpone, & the Vienna chocolate dessert, - ALL OF IT was super yummy. It's a great choice, you will not be disappointed by anything on the menu so go ahead and get all of the food you want. We will be ordering from here again before we leave. There's nothing this good back home - Enjoy!!

I was honestly very surprised by how much I enjoyed everything. The inside of this quaint little restaurant has a strong German feel. The staff are dressed traditionally, which makes the whole place feel charming and authentic. It is honestly adorable. I would love to return when they have live music to enjoy the full experience. We started with the potato pancakes and the sausage platter, and both were excellent. Every sausage on the platter was seasoned so well that I did not even need mustard. I ate each one exactly as it was served, and the flavor was fantastic. The pretzels that came with the platter were also very good. The potato pancakes were phenomenal. I easily could have eaten more, but I wanted to save room for my entrée. For my meal, I ordered the veal schnitzel with spaetzle and potato salad, along with mushroom gravy. The veal was incredibly tender and absolutely delicious. I loved it so much that I want to try making it at home. The spaetzle was fantastic and something completely new for me. The mushroom gravy really brought everything together and made the dish feel complete. The potato salad was just average, but everything else was outstanding. My boyfriend ordered the pork schnitzel with spaetzle and really enjoyed his meal as well. Between the music, the cozy atmosphere, and the wonderful food, the entire experience was warm and memorable. This was such a great introduction to German cuisine, and I would definitely return.

The restaurant opened back in 1985 and has been open ever since. The historic building and German theme add to the experience. The restaurant has seating on three levels, with a bar and some tables when you walk in, and two smaller dining areas on the other levels. The staff even dress in traditional attire. The architecture itself is incredible, showcasing the original 40-foot hand-carved pine beams from the 1860s cotton warehouse. Even the foundational stones holding up the restaurant space are repurposed from old ship ballast stones left behind at the 19th-century port by passing trade vessels! I chose to sit on the middle level because it was decorated with beautiful cuckoo clocks, which fondly reminded me of my own trip to Germany's Black Forest region and of visiting a clock factory there, where I saw the massive cuckoo clocks. For my meal, I ordered the pork schnitzel, which came served with warm German potato salad, sweet red cabbage, and a crisp cucumber salad. The pork schnitzel was cooked absolutely perfectly and tasted so good. I knew German potato salad was traditionally served warm, but I wasn't quite expecting the strong tang of the vinegar, though I thoroughly enjoyed the cabbage and cucumbers. To finish the meal, I debated between the German chocolate cake and the apple strudel. I ultimately chose the strudel for a more authentic experience, as German chocolate cake is actually an American creation rather than a traditional German one. The strudel arrived warm and was incredibly tasty!

I first visited about five years ago and remembered it immediately when we were back in Myrtle Beach. This time confirmed it wasn't nostalgia talking. The food is still outstanding. The Polish sampler plate is a ton of food and easily the best choice if you want to experience several traditional items in one visit. It's perfect for a first timer and more than enough for a solid lunch. The folks working there are incredibly friendly. Sometimes places like this can feel a little intimidating if English isn't the primary language, but everyone was welcoming and kind. I never felt like a stranger or like I was imposing. Inside it's pub style, bar available and good music, but not much seating which explains the wait ;) We ordered the 109 Chestnut Chicken Sandwich, the Hot Roasted Pork Sandwich and the Reuben. Our waitress recommended not getting the onion rings app and to do it as sides to save money, and man, we had SO MANY leftovers. The pork sandwich is super good but so filling. I could only eat half with all the onion rings! The Reuben was absolutely delicious and I would 1000% get that again.
