I've only ordered delivery from here but I will say I'm pretty impressed with the quality of the sushi. Delivery at night was around 1 hour which is what they estimated. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Maki and a Sashimi mix. The salmon was actually pretty good, soft and buttery like I prefer. The spicy tuna maki was alright but nothing to write home about. Honestly, I've never stepped foot in Hoshi Ya. That's because I've been exclusively an online customer for the past 3 years. Even though sushi is expensive, this place is still relatively affordable without sacrificing too much on quality. I usually get around 3-4 rolls to myself (always some variation of avocado and spicy fish) but I've noticed the freshness isn't as good lately. Maybe it's just me, though. Ordered take-out from this place only because of the deal that they had: 3 rolls for $12.95. Each roll, without the offer, ranges from $3.50 to around $6.50 (non-specialty maki). I chose the crazy maki since it is originally $6.50 (most expensive) and had all of the ingredients that interested me (avocado, shrimp tempura, eel sauce...etc), the spicy salmon maki, and the una avo maki (eel, avocado...). The only downside of this deal is that you cannot order more than 1 of the same maki; for example, even though the crazy maki was the best, I could not order 3 of them for the deal. I think they know people would do this to get the best deal so it is not possible to do so on the online order. Delivery was fairly quick, considering I was only a 5 minute drive from the actual restaurant. On the previous day, I tried to order take-out around 11:45pm on the weekend (they close at 12am); however, the online order would not process, which made me pretty bummed. They should really consider those people trying to fulfill their late night sushi cravings last minute and notify them before they spend 30 minutes researching all of the different maki on the online order form, since the descriptions of them are not listed. Overall, the sushi was pretty small.. I finished all 3 rolls by myself and was still hungry, and the taste was okay. Pretty hard to mess up on sushi. I am a big fan of Fugakyu, and this place is as good but a fraction of the price.When they opened in my area, I became an instant regular. The food is spectacular, he miso soup is extraordinary, and the sushi is delicious. I love the seaweed salad with spicy tobiko wasabi. The soft shell crab appetizer is mouth watering, as between the escolar sushi and tons of amazing makis, I have never left anything less than completely full and satisfied. You can either sit at the bar or one of their tables, although most of their business is take out. Personally, I like to come in so I can chat with the pleasant and outgoing proprietor, Henderson. My review is based on two experiences. My first visit (in-house order for takeout) was rock solid. I thought the management was super nice, and they entertained me with small talk about the Celtics while I waited. I really wanted to return with a nice review for these nice people. So, I was inclined to order again. This time, it was a delivery order via their website. They showed up within 30, 35 minutes of ordering (not bad) and once again I was met at the door by an extremely nice gentleman who said thank you at least 3x. Can you tell that I really like these people and want to write them a good review?? However, the sushi I ordered the second time around was not good at all. I don't think the term subpar would even be accurate. It was... bad. I had ordered seaweed salad, ebi mango roll for a second time, and tried a new roll: black caterpillar roll. I don't know what was wrong with my ebi mango roll this time, but it just tasted funny. I don't know how to describe it, but the crab stick or something made it so, so salty. Also, both rolls contained so much tempura crumb that I likened both rolls to eating sawdust. It was NOT good. I want to say that I'll try this place again, but there are just so many other good options for sushi takeout/delivery in the area that I don't see myself dropping 30-plus dollars again on a bad meal. I ordered Hoshi Ya through Yelp last night! While the delivery details stated that it would take 45-60 minutes to arrive, it actually got to my apartment within 25 minutes of ordering! While I have not actually been to the restaurant, I decided to give Hoshi Ya 4 (or even 4.5) stars because of the efficiency and the quality of the food. I ordered an avocado maki ($3.50), avo kyu maki ($3.95, avocado and cucumber), and idaho maki ($3.95, fried sweet potato). They were all very delicious; I especially enjoyed the idaho roll, which was warm and crunchy. The only negative is the fact that there is a $10 minimum for delivery; I was forced (oh woe is me) to get three maki rolls instead of the two I was originally planning on getting. But hey, I have a delicious lunch waiting for me today, so I ain't mad about it. read more

I really wanted to love this place after all the nice reviews, but I can't. There staff I agree is super helpful and friendly. I ordered and it came out in less then 5 mins! I ordered just sushi, and the spicy tuna roll wasn't even spicy, plus it just tasted like greasyness from the tempura that was blended in with the chopped tuna, which wasn't even crunchy. Bummer. California roll was typical, nothing special. On to the next the crazy maki. This one was the best out of the group. It was crunch sweet...little spice nothing overpowering. The price wasn't to bad...regular sushi $5-9 a roll. I hope in time this place will get better and better, mainly because it's the only sushi near oak square. read more

I have done both in store dining and delivery. There is no difference. Their food is good. Sushi places are scary to try for the first time (insert food poisoning anecdote) but Hoshi-YA is a safe adventure. I am partial to tuna maki. Spicy, crunchy, spicy & crunchy. They provide me with each option. The rest of their menu has some interesting options but nothing too crazy. I would not go with more than one other person. The dining area is very small. Two tables? Just ordered delivery from here using the yelp eat 24 app. The food got here surprisingly fast--about 15 minutes, when the estimated delivery time was 45-60 minutes. At first, I thought this was fantastic, but upon eating, I wonder if the speedy delivery was based on the food not being made fresh. The sushi was mushy. After taking Hoshi Ya's crash course on "What Overfried Tempura Tastes Like In Your Mouth" I've come back reborn as an expert, so heed my warning: don't order from there unless you have no other choice. I mean, definitely choose this place over Trader Joe's sushi. But you know, if you have any option whatsoever, my money's on the alternative. I ordered a variety of maki: - Idaho Maki Comes with a very generous lump of partly raw sweet potato. If you eat with your eyes, you'll be very happy because there's some pretty big chunks of sweet potato in there. But if you if eat with your mouth, as I'm sure 99% of humans do, you'll quickly learn that looks are deceiving. Felt like I was biting into a soggy rock. - Caterpillar Maki Sure did taste like a mushy caterpillar in my mouth. - Spicy Salmon Maki It was alright, the maki was too warm when it arrived and the flavor of the salmon was lost, so it just felt like I had a lukewarm piece of something chewy and slimy in my mouth. - Brighton Maki Ummm, not sure what they were going for but if someone ever makes a Wikipedia entry for "Sh*tty tempura" then please make sure to have an image of this on the headline. And a kitchen dish: - Nabeyaki Udon Somehow, my Nabeyaki Udon was colder than my spicy salmon maki. I think it might've tasted better if I ate at their restaurant. Pros: - Special of 12.95 for 3 rolls! We got the Crazy Roll, Spicy Tuna, and Yellowtail with Scallion. All were delicious and the special came with an order of Miso Soup, which was a pleasant surprise when I picked everything up. - Every staff member said hello and goodbye to me when I picked up the order. Definitely returning just for that friendliness. We also got the Spider Maki, Shumai, and Edamame, which led to a free Seaweed Salad for being over $30. The Spider Maki and Edamame were both good. Shumai were good, but was paired with a different dipping sauce than I am used to and I wasn't sure how I felt about it. Seaweed salad was delicious and fulfilled my craving. Cons: - Absolutely none. Friendly staff with reasonable prices. I wouldn't recommend dining in here as this is more of a take-out and delivery oriented business, with only a few small tables available. The fish here are usually fresh, and they don't skimp on the fish! They have solid House Maki's and their Deep Soft Shell Crab is a MUST TRY. Not a fan of their Miso Soup though. Very unsure how this place got 4 stars, but maybe their food is better when it's not delivered at 12:30am? Anyway, it's 11:45 at night and I'm hungry and unwilling to go outside and crawl through Allston so I decide to order delivery. I decided to give this place a try since it had so many good reviews, but alas, I was disappointed. I ordered the spicy tuna maki, negi-hama maki, tekyu maki, volcano maki, snow crab maki and got free edamame since my order. Best part of this meal was the free edamame. The quality of the raw fish in the negi-hama (yellow tail) and the tekyu maki (tuna) was just bad. The snowcrab maki was also flavorless and soggy. The real wins were with the volcano and the spicy tuna, since those actually had some flavor. The overall consistency of the rice was weird as well as the temperature of each roll. Highly recommend grocery store sushi over this place, but what can you expect at midnight on a Friday night? Not worth my $30. read more

I am a complete sushi snob and one day i was craving it and was in a rush to work. Stopped by because it was the grand opening to see what it was all about and was pleasantly surprised. So far I have ordered it several times and every time no matter what time of the day they deliver quick and everything tastes so fresh. Also one of the friendliest sushi places I've been (besides the up scale places) typically never very friendly at the small places. So I'm finally ready to review Hoshi-ya. I've ordered from them over a dozen times, and I have to say, they're great. Are they the best sushi you will ever have? Don't kid yourself. Are they the best, most efficient and cost effective sushi you can get delivered? Yep. And they're nice to boot! I've had a wide array of foods on their menu. It's always been above average. Food is usually very fresh and well made. The delivery guys are SUPER nice. I usually order when I'm home alone and the one time I ordered when my fiance was here and he answered the door, the delivery man told him to make sure to tell me hi, which was SO nice. I did have one food quality issue with them once and when I let the service I ordered through know (foodler) Hoshi-ya called me back, apologizing profusely and wanted to make sure I was okay. Hurray for Late night sushi! Good food past midnight is a beautiful thing. They deliver or if your local they are on the 57 bus line. Not really an eat-in place, which they tried to go for when the first opened. This is why there is the bar to watch them make the rolls. They have a great cash special- which comes with miso soup: 2 rolls for $8.95 or 3 for $12.95 but it's only for certain rolls. I will admit, I am a bit spoiled when it comes for take-out options, living only a block or two from 6 late-night eateries. This one is the newest, and to be fair, its the best of the lot. A sushi bar in what looks like a hole-in-the-wall may be a bit sketchy, especially when I know its chinese food neighbor isn't exactly sparkling and its other neighbor is a Papa John's, which is awful. When I went in for the first time, I asked all the right questions: Is the fish fresh? Is the sushi freshly made? Is anything frozen? After being assured all of it is actually fresh, I ordered a tuna roll, which was well crafted and tasted as good as an expensive sushi place, but without the price shock. The ramen noodles are also good, and for $7 or so, they come in a portion big enough to be two meals, one latenight, and one lunch. Everything comes with miso soup as well, which tastes pretty good, and its good for you, though I'm not a fan of miso soup in general. It actually had flavor though, and if you like miso, this place does it well. Can't afford to eat out every night, and latenight eating is a bad habit, at least for me, but this is a place where they make decent food in the wee hours, and I am happy they are around. read more

The service here is extremely fast. You'll walk in, they say ten minutes, you walk out within five. The price is reasonable and the quality is very good. I always get maki rolls - Alaskan and Tuna - they're better than many I've had at other more expensive restaurants. As I live nearby, I come here on a regular basis and have never been disappointed. Still love this place. I've ordered from Hoshi Ya a few more times since my last review, and they've been prompt, friendly, and the food has been pretty much unvaryingly excellent (for the price). The one problem I had with them arose when they switched my order with someone else's. I had started eating some dude's sushi (I was like, "This place included a complimentary hand roll because of my repeated patronage! yay!" uhh) but when I noticed I had received the wrong order, I called them and the delivery guy returned within like, five minutes to take the wrong order and give me my food. Ok, this is not a gourmet upscale place. Its a plain bread and butter sushi joint. I love this place. The food is "safe". I usually will get a spider roll, two ikura, a seaweed salad, and a can of coke and spend around $18. Delivery is fast as well. Great place to order from when too busy to leave the house. read more

This definitely is not a bad sushi place, just isn't the greatest either. The prices are reasonable, and they have delivery (at least through foodler) so it is convenient. I've driven by, and it looks like a whole in the wall, but I wouldn't discount it based on that. I discovered this place in the beginning of Dec when we moved to Brighton. The reviews seemed decent, the menu and prices looked great. My first order was a salmon avocado roll, california roll, and one of the special rolls with mango sauce, and a salad with ginger dressing. My order arrived pretty quickly, so I was impressed. The ginger dressing was fantastic, the edamame was good. The sushi was awful. I wasn't sure if it was just me and my paranoia around sushi and fish, or if it was really bad. Today my husband said he was hungry and unsure of what to eat (but knew he wanted something with avocado) so I decided to order from Hoshi-YA again. I figure you can't really say you don't like something (or a place sucks) until you try it twice. So we ordered an avocado roll, idaho roll, california roll (maki lunch special, to double check), idaho tempura, and the beef teriyaki lunch special. Our order came with a bunch of salads and miso soups (too bad I hate miso) and an extra salad for ordering over $20. With a $5 Grubhub rummy-yummy thing I ended up paying about $27 not including tip (which I do in cash). The results: avocado roll: husband liked it idaho roll: husband liked it california roll: there's something wrong with it. i don't know what it is, but there's something very untasty and unappetizing about the california rolls. roommate says theyre fine, just not a lot of crab. but there's just something not right to me. idaho tempura: salads: ginger dressing is absolutely fantastic soups: husband drank it, so i assume its fine. beef teriyaki: absolutely disappointing. no flavor and has a strange fishy-like smell. Great sushi in the heart of Brighton. Go there if you want great Japanese. We had a small mix-up with our maki though. Apparently plain old maki is your typical sushi roll (what most Westerners think of when they imagine sushi) and hand-rolled refers to cone-shaped sushi. We called and I drove the whole order back only to find out that they had made us 4 brand new maki rolls free of charge and let me leave with BOTH bags of sushi. That is why I am writing this review to tell everyone that this place is great. Just remember, hand-rolled = cone-shaped maki. read more
