I love this place! I never knew it was right next to my home till I moved half hour away. Then Hot Breads & Cakes started donating to our charity, Nourish Now. At first I thought gourmet cakes and indian food was a weird combination, but they make both so well, that you stop questioning soon enough. The authentic dishes on the menu are the closest to what I had during my trip to Tamil Nadu, India last year, especially the Tali meals. I brought my family, and they all agreed: it's our favorite Indian food in Gaithersburg. I've since come to know the owner very well. He is a generous man who donates regularly to Nourish Now (as well as to his regular clientele). In fact, I was picking up a donation this week, and was looking for something inexpensive on the menu. I saw the Veggie Burger, and thought I'd give it a try. I insisted several times to pay for this meal, as I'd planned, but he would not let me. I still have yet to tell him- BEST VEGGIE BURGER EVER. I heard great reviews about hotbreads and went there this week and ordered Dosa. What I got looked like a microwaved frozen dosa. It was all wrapped up like a tamale and not even 1% crispy. I ate it as I was hungry. But made me wonder, even if I use instant dosa mix, there will be a tiny bit of crispness. When you heat a frozen dosa or utappam, you will get a really soft dosa which matched exactly what I got at Hot Breads. Why pay $9 and wait for 1/2 hour for something that you can get in freezer section for under $3 and heat and eat in 2 minutes ? Never going back there. read more

Went for just this mango cake and it blew me away. I have not had a vegan cake be soo moist and delicious. I went during lunch time so I also tried the buffet which was good but If they would add a brief description of the ingredients above each food item , that would be very helpful. Hot Bread is the only local bakery that I know that serves eggless cakes. They always have plenty of cakes already baked so I've never had to order ahead of time. I've tried their mango moose cake and Black Forest cake and they both are great. It's a bit more expensive than regular bakeries and they could work on their customer service- these two reasons prevented from giving me this place 5 stars. Besides that, it's a great bakery for people who can't consume eggs. read more

I needed a cake for my son's baptism and a friend told me about this bakery (she had ordered her son's birthday cake from here). So I went to check it out. They gave me a cake tasting of a mango cake they had and it was really good. Juicy and not too sweet. Just right! It was a bit expensive but we needed it in 3 days I didn't even think about the price for long. We went to pick it up right before the celebration and it looked alright. I didn't like that the lettering looked like I had done it myself- expected a little nicer writing but the rest of it looked really nice. And everyone at the party said it was really good. Super delicious cafe food, always lots of options, and good service. I have had cakes as well as the food. The cakes are mostly eggfree, and they still are amazing. They come in sooo many different flavors. Theres a tres leches cupcake, its soo good. Mango Lassi, Rasmalai, and gulab jamun are available too. Th masala dosa, chaat, spring dosa, veggie thali, vegetable pastries, aloo tiki, paneer tika kati roll, samosas are all very good. At times its pretty spicy, but if it wasnt spicy, I wouldnt like it. This is the only place I know of in the area that has a sugar cane juicer and will squeeze you fresh sugar cane juice. It is delicious and seems to have some lemon juice and ginger added. Unfortunately, the last time I went, the sugar cane juicer was broken. As far as the actual "hot breads" (baked goods), we got a black forest cake here for my dad's birthday. It was okay. The actual Indochinese food...well, it's not particularly good. I'd go so far as to say it's pretty bad. read more

I come here at least once a week for lunch. The food is good and it's always changing up. At least one or two dishes will change between visits. I like spicy food and there's usually one or two dishes with a kick. Plus, this is the only place I know where the vegetarian dishes are as satisfying as meat dishes. read more

This place is fantastic. Not only do thay carry great Indian street food, their desserts are INCREDIBLE! All their cake recipes are egg and diary free, but amazingly moist and creamy. I have been here nearly 4 times in the last 3 weeks so I have been able to sample quite a bit of their menu and it is amazing. The owner/manager is awesome and willing to tweek the spice level on any dish to what you prefer. This has really become a regular lunch spot for me, considering that for under $10 you can get a chicken kabob roll, a samosa or a chaat and a bottle of soda. read more

We decided to stop in and grab some desert based off of yelp reviews. When we walked in, the place was disgustingly dirty with trash on the floor and uncleared tables. While eating my cake, I realized it was on the warm side even though it came out of the front case which is refrigerated. We decided to check the online app about restaurants in the area and how they do for food inspections. This restaurant has failed the county food inspections for the last 2 years, with most of them being failed for not keeping food at safe cold or hot temps. My wife went to use the restroom and one of the female workers was just finishing up. She didn't use soap when washing her hands and there were no towels to dry her hands, so she wiped them on her clothes. Disgusting!!!! We will never go back to this disgusting filthy hole. read more

The food here totally sucks. Chai and coffee are watery and taste like sugar water. The chicken tikka puff just doesn't have life nor does the Hakka noodles. Store bought frozen food is so much more tastier. If possible I would give it less than one star. Food is just not good. read more

This place has the best kathi rolls I've had in the US. Unbelievably delicious. All of the food is fresh and really well priced. There isn't a better place for quick South and North Indian fare in the DC area. The atmosphere is family friendly and clean. It is always a good sign when you go to a restaurant and people who are native to that region of the world are frequenting it. This is definitely the case for Hot Breads. My GF and I stop here whenever we are in Gaithersburg. Do yourself a favor and go! read more

You get a tiny pastry sized less than half of regular size (it's less than 3 inches long), each pastry costs around $3-4. Both black-forest and dark chocolate fudge pastries were dry and tasted a lot worse than those from the Hot Breads in New Jersey. The quality has gone downhill over the last year, sizes have become smaller and prices have been hiked. I would much rather get a super delicious Blackout cake from Cheesecake factory, which is a huge piece (equivalent to about 4 hot breads pastries) and way more delicious. Their regular bread loafs were all dried up and felt old, with no expiry dates on them. Never going to this Hot Breads again. read more

Updated 11/21 - I gave them another shot today since I was craving street food. The sev puri quantity was so little for the $5 they charge. My child liked it so I guess it was fine. I ordered an Alook tikki again and again I am disappointed. This time there was no tikki - instead they had scooped up potato used for masalas shaped it like a tikki and put the channa and sauces over it. There was so little onion you could barely taste it. I was really excited about this place because they have a variety of Indian snack foods. Where else can you get any sort of curry puff or sev batata puri? Wow what am amazing change at this restaurant. Place looks prettier and the food is just simply amazing. We went in to eat our regular dosa but with that menu changing, we had to change our food choice. We instead went for Apollo fish() chili chicken, hakka noodles and the most delicious and sumptuous black pepper fried goat()!! You can also get black pepper chicken if you don't eat goat. The prices are reasonable and the food is mind blowing!! Will visit again... just wish that they kept their tables a little more apart so that the guests are literally not in each other's face ..oops plates! I love this little place! They have amazing food aside from their breads and cakes! Good variety of indian "fast food," as they call it. I usually get their dosas or curries, which are delicious! You go up, order, sit down, and they bring it to you. You have to try their samosas, also very good. You get utensils, napkins, and water yourself. read more

Not great but not utterly inedible either. The Indo-Chinese menu is pretty awful; they tried to make sort of dumplings out of paneer and vegetables, but it was soggy and bland. The Indian curries were slightly better but still nothing too impressive. I saw them microwave it right in front of me. If I'm REALLY craving fast Indian food I guess I'd do it, but options like Minerva are far and away better. read more

I got really excited to see indo-chinese food on the menu, since it's my absolute favorite type of cuisine. However, I was really disappointed. The veg manchurian tasted nothing like real veg manchurian. The chili paneer was just okay. Both were incredibly spicy. The one good thing we ordered was the vada pav. It also wasn't nearly as spicy as the indo-chinese dishes. Hot Breads made my wedding cake as well a few years ago. It was one of the few in town that made eggless cakes. The color of the frosting ended up being different from what we had discussed, but it was overall pretty good. A tad dry according to the guests, but tasty. Overall, I recommend Hot Breads for the vada pav and pastries, but definitely not for the indo-chinese cuisine. read more

I am so very disappointed and disgusted with the customer service of this place! I put an order in for a baby shower cake 4 weeks before my event, to pick up at 11am Saturday morning. I confirmed the order and the cake decor details on the Thursday before the baby shower. I had requested a neutral color cake (yellow with hints of blue and green) as we do not know the gender of the baby yet. What was given to me was an all blue cake! The mother-to-be spent the entire evening explaining to 85 guests that the baby expected is not necessarily a boy and that it was a mistake on the bakery's part. I also requested that the word BABY be written directly under the ducks in the middle of the cake. I approved the writing that was used on the cake advertisement (the one you can look through for ideas). Please note that I was supposed to pick up the cake at 11am that morning. I decided to wait till 2pm so that the cake would remain nice and cool as the baby shower was at 3pm. When I got there, I had to wait another 10 minutes for the cake to be ready and then I saw that there was nothing written on it. When I reminded the manager of the word BABY being necessary, he took an icing tube and SCRIBBLED it on the cake. It looked disgusting and unprofessional. And any baker worth a pound knows that you cannot put icing over icing and take it off without wiping off the whole chunk. I was screwed, and they had made me late so I took it. When the cake got to the car, I opened it to send a picture to the Daddy-to-be (who was throwing the surprise baby shower) and saw that 6 inches of the side wall of the cake had been smashed into the wall of the box! On my way to the baby shower (which I was now late for), I called the bakery to explain how upset I was. They were rude. But at the end promised me a full refund. This was two weeks ago. I have yet to see the refund. I have called the owner and the manager and gotten the run around regarding the refund. One tells me it has gone through but there must be problems with the bank (how does a credit card refund go through a bank?), and will call me back. The other says he can't find my paperwork and will call me back. Surprise*Surprise, I never get a call back. And when I go ahead and call back, then conveniently the manager and/or owner have left. The mommy-to-be cried when she saw the cake, she was that upset. This place has no idea of what proper customer service is. This is NOT the cake I ordered and was promised! I would not recommend this place to others for cake orders because they clearly don't know what they are doing. And my guess is that the owner just doesn't want to refund me the $120 that I paid for a less than satisfactory cake! read more

Great!!! Family owned bakery in KENTLANDS, a MOST TRY!!!. I recently went to Hotbreads and was pleasantly surprised. They have amazing cakes and pasteries so soft, moist and delicious. They also serve up great unusual wraps and sandwichs, like the tandoori wrap, which you most try. The atmosphere and people are also warm and friendly. MAKE SURE U TRY THEIR CAKES!!! I came here for lunch with some of my coworkers and the buffet was really good. $10 is such a sweet teal for such a spread! I ate so much until I had no space for their mango lassi!
