This was our first visit so we went with two classics: the pork tenderloin and the chopped cheese sandwiches with salted tots. Both were super tasty. The pork tenderloin with the crispy cracker crusted pork tenderloin topped with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, mayo and yellow mustard... It's just a special bite. The Chopped Cheese is prepared with adobo seasoned ground beef chopped on the flattop with onion and american cheese topped with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato and relish. We found the relish on this one a little too sweet and wishes that it had the same pickles that we loved on the pork tenderloin. Probably a very easy request for the next time. tl;dr inventive flavors, home cooked feel and a full tummy My friend and I were trying to do a quick "mom date night" and I had pitched her heading to here (since I truly did love Iron Grate BBQ so much and had wanted to see what had landed there in its absence.) Enter Hot Dish Pantry - we parked in the parking lot, walked in and there are larger signs explaining the counter-side service and ordering process. The girl working at the front also made sure to explain how it would work and asked if we were dining in - we explained yes (but that we would be quick, as it was 7 PM and the place does close at 8 PM - FAIR WARNING TO ALL.) We went and grabbed two menus and a table, so we could quick review and head back up to the counter when we were ready. The inside is small, but festive and has some super cute and funky artwork we liked. We loved the fresh wild flowers that were on the tables. We decided on splitting the Saag Paneer Dip, Pepperoni Pizza Roll Pierogi and while she went with the Fried Pork Tenderloin sandwich while I wanted to try the current special: The Tipsy Piggy Hot Dish. We were truly floored by the quality and flavor of everything. The dip was on another level - it was so creamy and I loved the spinach flavor. The toppings on the dip of tamarind, mint cilantro chutney and mixture of red onion and crispy lentils was a texture and flavor combination I've never had before and REALLY enjoyed. Fry bread was great for the dippin'. My friend went on and on about how amazing her sandwich was - it was such a heaping portion that she wasn't able to finish it all, but said the meat was cooked to perfection and the crispy cracker crust gave it something extra. The special was delicious, every bite I had to make sure I got a little bit of everything - pork tenderloin, bacon, smoked sausage, beans, peppers, chipotle sauce and all with taco-seasoned tots on top!? "Comfort Food" to an absolute T. The pierogi was also good - as I know that's a big staple for this place - like the most souped-up pizza roll you'll ever eat in your life. I was drawn to my other menu items more than the pierogi, but they were definitely delicious. The staff was gracious in us being inside and trying to wrap up right around the 8 PM close. They did explain they do get quite a large set of orders heavily based on take out and pick up which they are usually dealing with. I stopped here for new restaurant of the week to try the Nashville hot pork tenderloin sandwich because I can't remember ever seeing it on any menu before. You order at the kitchen window and you can carry out or eat in their dining room on the side. The decor is funky like a thrift store threw up all over with wooden chairs that looked like every one different. The service was good with the woman telling me today's specials but I was there for the Nashville hot pork tenderloin. The property still looked like a dressed up bbq restaurant because I felt it still had the bbq foot print if you get what I mean. The Nashville hot pork tenderloin looked amazing with a fresh egg wash bun. I ordered it in the menu form and not the day's special with slaw, just mayo and pickles. The tenderloin is cooked to order and has a slightly crunchy breading vs super crispy with tender pork. The Nashville hot had some kick and made my nose run. The bun was fresh and they didn't skimp on pickles because it's probably the most pickles I have been served on a sandwich. Comforting I did not have a chance to stop at Hot Dish while at the Market Hall but I'm so glad that they have grown up and taken over this spot on Howell. I've now had a few stops and even lunchtime delivery. On my first visit I got the pork tenderloin. Now, I've been a fan of the Culvers version but there is no comparison here. The Hot Dish tenderloin is just HUGE, like it could fit on a 12" sub big with a taste to match. I've also tried the "parmesan" alternative with a matching huge eggplant patty. The burgers are huge and filling - definitely near the top of the "best in town burgers". Oddly, I've only tried the tots thus far for sides. I need to do the curds and also need to try the pierogis. So I drove up to 4125 S Howell looking for a little BBQ action only to find a it's been transformed into a really cool kind of kitschy delicious upscale foodie version of comfort food. The cashier was a bomb with an engaging giggle and friendly self confidence which really makes the restaurant imho. One page menu with familiar favs with amazing quirks. I wanted pierogis, but couldn't get past the Classic Lucy Goosey Burger. My side? A duck fat fried potato pancake with duck confit. I've spent two years eating gluten-free, sugar -free, dairy-free and gave up my energy drinks and aspartame sweetened drinks. Cut out the red meat. All to attempt to alleviate a possible source of chronic pain. We were impressed by the food we ate today - so much so, that I would highly recommend for any reader to bring especially people who are visiting from out of town or aren't super familiar with Midwestern cuisine with a fun flair! I feel like there's something for everyone, whether you're dining with a picky eater or foodies alike. It's counter service, and then you wait for your food and go to a pickup window to bring it back to your table. The dining area ambience is spacious, and thoughtfully decorated. I imagine during peak hours that it can get crowded, but we came around 3:00 in the afternoon on the weekend. Everything we ordered was delicious - the only thing we wouldn't necessarily order again is a savory potato pancakes. Not that they were bad by any means, everything else just stood out in flavor profile and memorability. We ordered the fried pickles to start - some of the best fried pickles I've had in a really long time. And then we also did three different kinds of pierogies: aloo Chaat, loaded baked potato, and crab rangoon. It's truly hard to prepare a pierogi incorrectly, but the insides of all of them were all delicious. The aloo Chaat reminded us of samosas, and the side salad that came with it was a perfect, fresh and tart accompaniment. The loaded baked potato I think is the most traditional and least out of the box when it comes to flavor. Still delicious regardless. Finally, the crab rangoon pierogi is not too different than a standard crab rangoon, honestly, but go light on the sauce that they give you because they can be a little bit too sweet for some palettes! The signature hot dish was also delicious - the base is ground beef, and the beef flavor wasn't too strong, much to our delight. It's clear that they incorporate plenty of mushroom flavor in the base, and the tater tots on top I think we're prepared separately to retain their crispiness. Finally, the pork tenderloin marinara was impressively delicious. We didn't eat it at first because we were too busy eating other things, so I was impressed that it retained its crispiness, and it didn't feel too heavy despite the appearance. Hot Dish Pantry @ 3rd Street Market Hall is THE place to experience true Wisconsin comfort food in downtown MKE. I absolutely had to try their name sake "Hot Dish." I found it deliciously improved from Grandma's hot dish. The bottom layer was chock-full of ground beef, peas & carrots and mushrooms in a creamy, well-seasoned mushroom sauce. Then came a generous gooey layer of cheese which was topped with crispy tater tots. It is perfection. I also tried one order (3 pc.) of Crab Rangoon Pierogis. They were delicious and even my picky husband liked them. Only a very faint crab flavor, but when dipped in the house made sauce=awesome pair. I would love to see Hot Dish expand their menu to offer baked Wisconsin Mac n Cheese. With all the families in the food hall, Mac n Cheese could be HUGE!! Just my 2 cents. read more

Had the pleasure of supporting Hot Dish Pantry at 3rd St. Market Hall on opening weekend. Hot Dish Pantry serves pierogies, something called "Hot Dish", and were very friendly and fast. The special of the weekend Aloo Chaat pierogi was already sold out on the second day of opening, but it looked very unique, and promising for what's to come. The namesake Hot Dish was also sold out but looks like a fun and hearty dish of meat, veggies, and topped with tater tots. The regular pierogies pleased this part-Polish guy! I'm so lucky they moved into my neighborhood! Their dine in space is cute, with excellent music and quirky decor. It reminds me of restaurants in Austin or Portland before those cities became too expensive and overrun by big corporations. The food and service are always excellent, and I really appreciate how they experiment with familiar dishes to give you something slightly elevated, especially with their specials. They had four types of pierogis on the menu where my group and I tried all of them (okay I didn't try the mushroom but that's because it's equivalent to eating dirt regardless of the situation). They just opened shop 2 weeks ago in the 3rd street market. The staff was pleasant and very welcoming. Their aloo chaat was probably my favorite amongst the four, although I'd ask for more chutney and curry, and the ability to kick up the spice. This had the most flavor and texture with the crunch from the lentils. I found the loaded baked potato to be a little lack luster and very plain. The crab Rangoon could have used a little more crab meat, otherwise it feels like you're eating cream cheese pierogis. Jsyk, you can't mix and match dumplings. I'd say the size of the pierogis are good for a snack/quick fix on the go, not so much a meal. read more

Okay, I've had the same two dishes both times I've visited Hot Dish. Franky, they're just THAT GOOD. The aloo chaat pierogies are perfectly spiced and the pasta has a great chew. The star, however is the cilantro chutney on top with the toasted chickpeas and the amazing cream dipping sauce. I honestly see this one as the star of my lunch and eat everything else first. We entered and sat fown after a bit someone leaned out the service window and informed us it was order and pickup at the window. We acknowledged this and went over the menu and went to the window but nobody was there. By this time my partner was already just short of shivering as they evidently don't believe in heating their dining area. Had dinner there tonight and all our sandwiches were served iced cold. Not even warm. The only hot food was the fried sides ( cheese curds, fried pickles and tater tots. The bun felt as if they were kept in the fridge. Definitely not worth the $70 we spent. The pork sandwich had no seasoning. Maybe serve food as it's ready. I could have made 3 sandwiches from what I received! I've been telling family members about my experience, and definitely will be going back to try other menu items. Had an order of the potato and the mushroom. The mushroom was better than the potato, but just ok, nothing special. What shocked me the most was the value. The pierogis are probably the smallest that I have ever had. Three for $9.00 is way overpriced for their size. If you were to make it a meal, you would probably need 2-3 orders making a lunch cost $18-27. I would suggest making them bigger or lowering the price by 30% and allowing customers to mix and match. The pierogis were very good, but two things made it a bit of a bummer. One the pierogis were $9 for 3 without even adding a side or a drink, for what you get it seemed very overpriced. Secondly, you were not able to mix and match pierogis which you should be able to do if they are charging $9 for 3 which is not filling enough for a meal in itself.
