Ok,let me start by saying this is my first review but certainly won't be my last! You yelpers have really helped me broaden my horizons here in LBC where the tendency to swerve towards Belmont Shore in search of a good meal is ALL too common. Thanks for taking me to new and great places! I'm forever grateful! Now, about Hot Java.....I love the place! Sure, unruly dogs (with equally unruly owners) can be a nuisance and the coffee may not be the best in town, but what it lacks in sophistication it more than makes up for in comfort and ambience. The owner is funny, engaging, and really makes an effort to make you feel at home. For those of us who work from home, getting out of isolation is important, at least it is to me. On my morning coffee run (laptop in tow) it's nice to see the same faces settled around their macbooks and Dells, cranking out spreadsheets or hammering out morning emails over a steaming cup of coffee. Pass on the "to go" cup and grab a big mug and you save both $$$ AND the environment, both great things in my book. The couches are comfy, the outlets plentiful and the wi-fi is pretty speedy, especially for a crowded coffee joint. The music/TV's can be a little loud so if you have a conference call to catch, it's probably best not to take it here. I read other reviews about the food being mediocre to bad but my experience has been pretty good, so far. I had a turkey and cranberry pannini yesterday that was served with kettle chips...pretty standard for a coffee shop. The bread was fresh and the service was fast...though it was a bit expensive for a "heat and eat" at $8.95. But, again, I am paying for the convenience and atmosphere so I will gladly spend the extra couple of bucks. If you are homophobic, please stay away and save us all the trouble...but if you are looking for a diverse, fun and friendly place, this is it. See ya there. read more

Love this place. Two blocks from the beach, across from the park (so that you can park). Great vibe in the place. Tables and chairs and outdoor seating. Frequent entertainment, from musical artists to comedy. Love the iced blended vanilla chai with almond milk. Yum! read more

Okay, this place is fine as a cafe/pastry shop ONLY but they need to figure out their shit for their food menu, especially for the area they are in!! Now I get it, I'm one of those annoying low-carb/keto people. So kill me. But in this area of LB, diet restrictions are not that uncommon and every single other place I've been to (including GOLDEN BURGER!!) is happy to slightly modify. I asked if I could get the sandwich served on like a bed of argula (which was listed in the sandwich). They said no, fine. I asked if they could just give whatever is inside the sandwich without the bread (so I don't have to waste the bread), they said no! What?! Fantastic drinks, great service, awesome vibes. We come here every Sunday to work outside and we love this place. The drinks are delicious! We our favorite is the chai tea latte. Super hipster vibe, but not snooty like some hipster places. Very welcoming and warm. I highly recommend this place as a hangout or work spot. read more

I stopped in Hot Java late on a Thursday night while in town for work. Cute and welcoming atmosphere. Super gay artwork that either had shirtless men or dogs. As a queer, it felt very comfortable and homey. There was a good crowd and a decent amount of background noise that didn't make working difficult. I do wish that there were more outlets available. The one that I could see from my seat was taken up by the tv on the wall, which wasn't on. My work ended when my laptop died. The service was pretty good. They ran out of my passion iced tea after I had the first glass and gave me some green iced tea for free. All in all, I will go back when I'm in town. read more

Literally the worst iced latte I've ever had. I went last year and it was quite decent. But I went once again today and instant coffee would be better. Not to mention each coffee was 6.50 each. It was extremely watered down and flavorless even though I got it with light ice and it already tasted like somebody threw a half of cup of water in it and they acted shocked when I complained about it and they gave the shot and it even tasted more bitter and undrinkable. It was even more nasty cause the flavor of the coffee was super bitter. If you went to a gas station and ordered coffee from there and added powdered creamer and some water that might taste better. Bitter nasty undrinkable I doubt it even being espresso. I feel like I was just robbed. We wasted 12 bucks on two of these. Had to throw away. Wish I could give 0 stars. read more

I've visited three times and I feel I can honestly say their lattes are terrible. The location is convenient and I tried changing up the latte with whole milk in one visit and paid for an extra shot. On my last visit I told them the latte tasted weak. After paying for an extra shot she told me I'd have to pay for ANOTHER shot. Clearly the espresso wasn't pulled properly. I walk in and order my drinks and a muffin and the cashier (older male) lets me know they don't have the bacon muffin that I wanted but they do have a sausage muffin so I said okay I'll take that instead, I pay and then have a seat. I get my drinks pretty quickly but 25 mins later and my muffin isn't ready so I go up and ask if maybe I just didn't hear them call my name or something but the cashier tells me that they're also all out of the muffin he had told me they had earlier but instead of coming up to me and letting me know they let me sit and wait till I went up and asked what was taking so long. No apologies offered or anything he just let me know they could give me a burrito instead and even then that took another 10 minutes to get. Horrible service. read more

It's a great meeting place, a great place to work on writing, and has a great vibe for reading magazines and sipping coffee inside or on the patio. I stay away from the complicated requests here, keeping it simple. My favorite thing is to stroll up early-ish hand-in-hand with my favorite person on a weekend morning while everyone else in long beach is fighting for one of the uber-competitive brunch spots. Nothing beats a diet coke and a jalapeno bagel slathered in cream cheese. When I can get out of that rut: An iced half spiced/half vanilla chai does the trick. read more

Potentially the worst iced latte I've ever tasted, and definitely the worst $5.10 I've ever spent. I went for a walk around the neighborhood, and Hot Java caught my eye. I saw this spot on a listicle, probably on TripAdvisor, TimeOut, or the like. The vibe is cozy, but the shop was dark. It was the kind of dark that makes you turn your iPhone brightness down. I was the 5th person in line, though it seemed like I was the 15th. The line took FOREVER to move. When I finally made it to the counter, I was greeted by an unfriendly cashier. "What's a Java Blast," I asked. "It's a blended coffee drink," he replied in a tone suggesting that I should've known. I shrugged it off and ordered an iced vanilla latte instead. Yes, I'm basic, but it's a simple drink that's hard to mess up... or so I thought. I waited a good 8-10 minutes before the cashier came up to me and asked, "what is it that you ordered?" Hmmm. Did he forget to relay my order to the barista? "Medium iced vanilla latte," I answered. I waited another 10 minutes for my drink during which time: (1) They incorrectly served the woman in front of me. She ordered a PB&J panini and was served a veggie panini. (2) They realized they had no more oranges to fulfill the fresh OJ order of the woman who ordered after me. She ended up asking for a refund and left. By the time my latte was slapped on the countertop dripping with espresso on the sides and overflowing on the lid, I was ready to get out of there. WHAT. A. MESS. I bolted for the door. Once I reached sunlight, I looked down and noticed something was off. What I ordered resembled more of an iced macchiato than a latte. "Odd, but okay," I thought. I took a sip, and I don't think my tastebuds have ever been more insulted in the history of their flavor-deciphering lives. I can handle bitter, but SOUR? No. Sorry. Not having it. They get one star for their coffee and the guy working the counter had a good attitude. My problem is: they announced a sandwich WITH mustard. .. prepared the sandwich and gave it to me. Then I requested mustard. "Oops they ran out." How can you advertise multiple sandwich's then not have mustard? Especially with a Pastrami and sauerkraut option. Weird. Anyways, the place is filthy dirty. The crowd was somewhat lower quality with the exception of students studying. Not a great people watching place. Parking situation is not bad though. This place have friendly costumer service and have unique food. My girl and I went here after biking at the beach cause we want to try somewhere new. The server is really friendly and helpful for first time costumers. They recommended their bacon cheddar scone which is amazingly good. It is a unique scone cause not a lot of coffee shops make such a food and it's the cook's special for that day. It was flaky and cheesy at the same time. We ordered their madeleine cookies, too and it's sweeter than other madeleines. My girl ordered their chocolate macchiato and it was good. This is a great place to relax with the family or a friend after visiting Bixby Dog Park or strolling through the Farmer's Market on a Saturday morning. The outdoor seating is nice and if you get a prime seat, hold on to it as they do not come easy. The muffins are good, and my wife loves the iced coffee here. It is easy to let time pass by while watching cars drive by and watch the park activity. This is our usual Saturday ritual! read more

The lavender latte is amazing, truly delicious. However lately the past couple weeks there has been a women behind the register who is very rude. Doesn't even say hello and it seems like an inconvenience to her whenever anyone makes an order. For today for instance she kept looking at her watch as my boyfriend was telling her his order. I love the drinks here but that can be inconsistent as well depending on who is the barista. Train your employees to actually have good customer service or they will ruin your business. read more

Been coming here for years. Been a loyal customer living here in the gayborhood for years. Panini sandwiches are always a favorite. Nice outside patio seating but can be a little loud depending on the time of day. Service is good some of the people who work here are a tad flirty but i dont mind. Coffee is good and they also have many small events that occur here like comedy night and poetry readings as well. The other day I went for a coffee to this place. I order my coffee and a cup of water because I was thirsty. The person who helped me gave me my water in a small espresso cup. I honestly didn't mind since they gave it to me for free. The problem was that while I was waiting for my coffee, another person who was not a person of color came to the place to order a coffee and asked for the same thing as me, a miserable cup of water, and the guy in the front desk gave him a big iced-coffee cup full of water and ice. I've tried this place about 5x now. Their iced coffee was watery the first time, so now I'm gunshy and probably won't get it there again. I'm stubborn in that way..Now I just get their hot brewed coffee. They often have a couple different types of medium and dark roast coffee to choose from. The pastries are a mixed bag. I don't think they're worth it. Today, I got a cafe au lait with hemp milk and it was great. HOWEVER. It's awkward that I have to pour my own coffee then bring it to the counter where they hand out the drinks. When I brought it over, the barista left it where I set it down, and eventually poured in the steamed "milk" without moving it. I felt compelled to lurk near my cup while I waited, as today was too busy for me to chance getting roofied by another customer. I felt weird and it /was/ weird. My wife and I, both first timers to Hot Java, both ordered a salted caramel iced coffee on a warm Memorial Day. Wow, at first taste it was super salty and extremely sweet. They were unpalatable. Very disappointed. Granted, the drink by name is supposed to have a salt and sweet taste, but this was ridiculous. There was not even a hint of a coffee taste to the drink. Had to throw them away.
