What a great start to my Sunday!!! I walk in and people are chatting with each other across the tables, the barista's are talking to people. It just felt so friendly and so small neighborhood... I made wrong choices, and I can't wait to go back, because I can just tell that everything is good. Everyone else's drinks looked good lol but I ordered in a panic and I ordered a BLAST (not anything I'd ever get) I came in for a cold brew or a chai tea, I asked what a blast was, and I felt like I was taking too long and just got it...#fail It was good, but it was one of those blended drinks that halfway through you drank all the liquid and then you're just pounding the cup to somehow get more to slurp up....#embarrassing I got the bacon egg and cheese sandwich. It was good. Nothing to brag and bring your friends over to try. But it was a fresher take on what you would get at Starbucks... This coffee shop is average at best. It's located in an awesome area and brings in a lot of locals. I like coming here because it's the nearest coffee shop to my house and it's pretty spacious inside. Coffee is decent. I think it's a great option for a pick-me-up but not the best (could also depend on whose making your coffee). Their food is totally mediocre. I've been disappointed with their quality of food and portion. Their breakfast burritos are just sad and tiny. Their sandwich bread is over toasted. Ordering breakfast here made me wish I had waited at the Park Pantry instead. I once ordered a panini and they served it in an XL togo container and it just felt wasteful. I couldn't care less if they had the crappiest coffee in the world(it's probably good though, haven't tired) This place, staff, and owner all get five stars. My dog busted out of my friends apartment while we were out yesterday and thanks to Hot Java I got her back safe and sound! The staff and some friendly neighbors got her off the busy street and into the cafe. They were closing and hadn't heard from me so the owner of the cafe, Sergio, took my dog to his house down the street to wait it out. She could have easily been hit by a car, rounded up by animal control, taken to a shelter, or even just plain dog napped. Seriously couldn't thank them all enough. I've lived across the street from this coffee shop since July and up until this past weekend had only been once or twice for iced tea as I'm not a big fan of coffee. As a proud member of the community and resident of the gayborhood, I have been wanting to support the business for a while and made it a point to do so. I have mixed feelings about my experiences. The good. Cream cheese and bagel w/ lox is delicious and this is the most affordable place you'll find this treat. They have delicious iced tea. Bring an extra quarter if you want a refill. Major props to the man at the register who asked me preemptively if I would want a refill so I could just pay him before hand. I really love efficiency. The young man with the awesome trendy mustache is very nice. The bad. The folks that work here aren't the nicest. The efficient guy at the register seems a little jaded but it's tolerable, ALMOST likable, in that Bernie Sanders kind-of-way. One of the guys behind the counter, doing the heavy lifting, also seemed jaded but was unable to be charming, even in the slightest. I'm referring to a guy with facial hair, glasses, and a hat. Both interactions I've had with him were uncomfortable and I felt like I was being condescended to or maybe not cute enough by our community's standards. But I get it, I'm miserable at work too. It doesn't look like much from outside but this is a cute little neighborhood coffee shop. Enjoy it on one of the tables inside or outside, take it across the street to the park or down the block to the beach. Staff has always been super friendly! They are a lean operation so food can take a bit of time to come out but we really enjoyed our breakfast burritos. They're not gigantic but we didn't leave hungry either. I had the tuna sandwich although it wasn't really on a Panini it was on toasted bread it was just as good. The spiciness of the tuna was just light but tasted amazing. I will go for the oranges the orange was huge brush and a great side for a tuna sandwich. The cappuccino was perfect and both that were there today were very courteous and I was asked if I wanted a coffee holder which was perfect as I had multiple cups. I was first introduced years ago when my friend, actress Carlease Burke, produced and co-hosted a monthly stand-up comedy show here: Laugh-A-Latte. The atmosphere was always accepting and friendly. I loved the mix of clientele and the attentiveness of staff. Eventually, a documentary about the comedy shows was produced by Carlease called Signing Funny. Just a rousing good time, yet perfect for reflective getaways, too. Immensely LGBTQIX-inclusive! I miss it much. Tom 'Hot Fingers' O'Malley was a crowd favorite as the interpreter; he was a show of his own. The venue had lots of star power, attracting big names in comedy who waited in line to perform there. Its novelty never wore off, a place for the hearing impaired to be treated to some of the best in stand-up comedy at a local spot. Customer service was excellent. Lovely ladies greet you and make recommendations and light conversation making you feel welcome. That deserves 5 stars on its own. However, the reason I went was for coffee and something to eat. The iced coffee was bitter, not in a good way, it tasted so bad. I ordered it with oat milk and cinnamon, I think it got left out because it tasted like watered down 3 day old coffee over ice. The jalapeño bagel was slightly warm when I took my first bite. Globs of cream cheese poured out. I had to scoop out a lot of it because it was a lot. Still seemed like a lot even after I did that. It wasn't even spread out evenly. A true mess. The rest of the bagel was ice cold. I tossed it after taking a picture of the atrocity. The ambiance was decent, lots of places to sit but the wifi was spotty as hell so careful if you want to work from here. I will absolutely not be coming back here. 7/11 coffee tastes so much better. I recommend Coffee Drunk, Rose Park Roasters, Tierra Mia, and Good Time Cafe. So sad cause it's at such a prime location. read more

I ventured inside HotJava today after an extended beach walk. With lots of drink options (hot or cold), you can't go wrong. I chose the Honey Hazelnut latte with almond milk and was not disappointed. The drink wasn't too sweet and had the perfect fall flavor (and temperature)! Kept the nosh simple with an egg and cheese muffin to enjoy on the patio. Went here this afternoon and it felt depressing. I've been coming here a lot this year and each time I go I leave wondering why I even came. The flavored lattes are always subpar, and their very small breakfast burritos cost far too much. Anyway, for today's visit, I felt that the staff working were depressed. In particular my cashier. I felt like I had done something wrong by entering and ordering from their business! To top it off, when I received my small burrito, it was kind of flopped on the counter and the guy just whipped away. I guess this seems petty, but what I think this place is missing is heart. When I go to Park Pantry, I never leave feeling kind of weird and down, and their food always makes it worth the time spent. The best thing I've gotten from Java is their Chai Tea Latte. A cute lil coffee house in LB! I must admit I'm not a local or do I consider myself to be well versed in Long Beach haunts but I'd definitely consider this place to be a stop next time I decide to come here. Popped in here with Ryan C for a midday snack and caffeine and was really happy with the selections of goodies and their coffee. I ordered the Soy Chorizo burrito (complete with black beans, taters, eggs, and cheese served with salsa on the side). I also ordered my favorite beverage Vanilla Latte (the skinny version because why not?). The burrito was on the smaller side but it still packed a decent punch and left me full for the next few hours comfortably. The flavors were AMAZING. Everything worked together so well and the salsa on the side (a lil tomatillo number) was the perfect amount of brightness to the dense soyrizo and cheese (which I think was vegan cheese). Love this place! Been coming here for almost two years when I have to work in Long Beach. Has the most latte flavors I've EVER SEEN with SO MANY SUGAR FREE OPTIONS! All lattes taste very sweet, if you like more coffee taste maybe ask for less milk. Also the chipotle turkey panini is so good! That chipotle sauce is a1, the turkey tastes like somebody cut a very moist thanksgiving turkey, and the bread is crispy in the right places. Upon leaving Denver four months ago, I was terrified I wouldn't find a home coffee shop in my new neighborhood within walking distance! Hot Java quickly came to the rescue, and I'm pretty sure I've only NOT gone here about five days out of my time in Long Beach. Simple and cute, Hot Java has an easy to follow menu of espresso beverages, several different coffee blends that you can buy to brew yourself, a vast selection of pastries and sweets, and my fave -- really really nice breakfast sandwiches and burritos! Not like those gross weird frozen ones from big chains. LEGIT breakfast items that are cooked fresh. I'm boring and always get a triple vanilla latte, but I'm pretty sure they have about 25+ different flavors (some that are questionable to an ex-barista....) but hey, I respect it! The employees and staff are super friendly and already know me by my name (or at least my drink). Natalie and Winter are super cute and trendy and definitely brighten up my morning. Much like a lot of Long Beach, Hot Java has a definite community feel and promotes a lot of local art, theatre, and festivals. Glad to be updating my review and adding a star. I walk by daily now that I live closer and finally came in and was very happy with my drink and how much faster the service was. Got a vanilla caramel iced latte and it wasn't too sweet and was better than a caramel macchiato from Starbucks, same price range. They are also doing a great job with social distancing during coronavirus. Well definitely return, only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because there are constantly people smoking on their patio just a couple feet from the door. Isn't that illegal? This Coffee house has a very cozy feel with plenty of seating. It has a bohemian coffee house decor and in addition to serving some food items. They use very good quality Coffee Ingriedients from what I can see, but when I ordered a cappuccino "for here" I instead received what was a Cafe Latte in a 20.oz Soup bowl. I asked the Barista, Is this my Cappucino? And he said yes. A cappuccino that is ordered "For here" should be no larger than a 10.oz ceramic cup. (12.oz is the cut-off) I understand that it comes in 3 different sizes, but then you need to add more espresso to each size. And in this case, My 20.oz Cappuccino was 95% Milk, with some foam. I barely tasted any coffee. The service is friendly and they play pleasant music. The Drip coffee is pretty good too. Great place to meet and do work . Just Please work on the Cappuccino! read more

Only complaint - don't go here on a cool or cold day, early in the morning or late, because they keep this place freezing cold. One morning it was 41 degrees outside and they had the air conditioning running with ceiling fans and the doors open. Since it had been raining the outside air was horribly chill, and the hot food got cold instantly. I understand the need for post-pandemic precautions, but this was unbearable. cloudy, cool afternoons are miserable too. Warm days this place is A1 in every respect.
