Went in today with my family to get a good treat considering the ice cream shack was packed, we went into your store and a few of the girls were extremely disrespectful and rude for customers being in the building. Inappropriate words were said to the point where my kids at a young age could hear. Extremely disappointed. It didn't feel necessary to tip because at this point I was already irritated this stuff was said in front of families, we had walked out the door and one of the girls had commented as we walked out "thanks for the tip" and I believe the name of the girl was Chelsea or Kelsey or something a long those lines because one girl had yelled her name after that last comment. Won't be going here anymore. Girl needs to quit acting like a snobby teenager and act professional in the work place. So disappointed with this shop. Have Ioved it for years coming to sunriver. Meh. Kids will eat any quality of donuts, I know. And it's the only place in Sunriver besides the grocery store to grab one so we occasionally go. The problem is not the price- high but it's a resort community, and not the service- mediocre at best. (Why aren't donuts ready, hot and fresh, at opening every day?) Our biggest issue is our childhood memories of fresh, warm cinnamon rolls and cream cheese dumplings, melting away with each adult visit. Or those cheesey, crunchy, breadstick twists we would grab for bike riding energy? Remember those delicious pastries? Wish this place could get back to that quality. Sunriver needs a good stop for a donut treat. We'd go often if there was one. read more

Reading other reviews you can tell how impatient people are in this lifetime. Yes, the place is tiny, so don't expect to sit inside is the easy answer. The staff are young but I thought they were lovely. We had a DELICIOUS flaky, croissant, a cinnamon twist and huge cinnamon role. We've eaten a lot of cinnamon roles, many that claim to be "the world's best" (Ann Sather Chicago I'm talking to you) and this was far better. Moist, cinnamon flavored, large with killer frosting. Mixed reviews in our family, overall concerns us was that Hot Lava is OK at best. Since the doughnuts are baked, they may inherently be a little dry... Either that, or we got a dry batch. The Mountain Man breakfast burrito sounded better than it was. Portion size was awesome, and seemingly fresh ingredients, but I just expected more flavor from the description. Overall out wait time wasn't too bad, they were super busy and the staff was busting hump to get peoples' orders out in a timely fashion. Once again another food provider in Sunriver has disappointed us.....Called this morning to see if they made sandwich rolls and dumb ass didn't even know how to answer the phone. Just kept saying hello until the question finally got through. Come to find out the little punk behind the counter (who I'm pretty sure has to be 18 to be working with out an adult around) looked like he did even know what to do and right when we walked in the door he replaced a pastry in the case with his bare hands. Shudder. Made me wonder about how many health code violations could happen on our first visit. Still not one to judge a book by its cover. Ordered 2 burritos and a loaf or bread. Burritos are so cold and stale that the eggs, ham, and "sauté" onions felt like they were coated in ice. Glad we didn't get coffee as I listened to the family next to us say it was disgusting. Also this "bakery" sold us old stale bread for that I can't even bring myself to feed to the birds.....pretty disappointing Sunday morning to end up with an uneasy stomach too. read more

The best thing I ate in central Oregon marionberry pastry. We stopped early (6 am) for breakfast before fly fishing. Had seen cinnamon rolls the previous day, but they had not finished baking yet. I have been coming to Sunriver for many years and have always loved the trips to the bakery. Sadly Hot Lava Bakery has been on a steady decline. This year was the last straw for us. We called ahead to order Gluten free scones, we had done this earlier in the week and the scones were delicious. After placing our order we received a call stating that they don't make GF scones on Friday's because other pastries are in more demand and the GF scones have to be made by hand. So they would not be able to fill my order. When I asked about the order my daughter had made I was told too bad they would not have any GF scones on Friday. When my daughter went to pick up her order Friday morning they gave her two GF Scones and told her that an employee had just scarfed one in herself. So they DID clearly make GF scones on Friday's! Why would you turn away a customer this way. It just didn't set well with me and the employee was rude! The place is over priced and when you walk in there is nothing on the shelves! Fresh made dough every morning, need I say more? Pastries are exceptional! Their breakfast burritos are delicious as well.

We have been traveling to Sunriver for over 20 years. One of our "must stops" is the Hot Lava Cafe. Consistently the pastries are fresh, very tasty AND baked - not deep fried. That may be the reason some individuals think the taste is odd. Baked is much better & certainly doesn't leave that greasy oily after taste. The scones, muffins & strudels are our favorites. I must admit we have never tried the donuts but our grandchildren love them. The pecan cinnamon rolls are a special treat & are so large they can easily be split. We also appreciate the good quality of coffee. We truly enjoy a good cup of coffee & they use Sister's coffee - locally roasted in Sisters, OR. If I had any negative comment it would be there needs to be more space - especially in the winter. I wish there were more tables & seating available. We recommend this locally owned business to anyone traveling to Sunriver. We like to support small businesses - especially when they are as enjoyable as this one. read more

Absolutely the worst doughnut I've had in my 55-year doughnut loving life--more like a frosted bagel.

Poor customer service and the food was not that great. We arrived to a very busy crowded cafe. Which, would usually be a sign of a can't miss place. Not the case here. After standing in line for a bit and finally getting to the cash register we were ignored and a group that just walked in was helped. Not only were we skipped over but someone behind us was as well. The employee did apologize but was not very friendly. When we did finally get to place an order we ordered some pastries and breakfast sandwiches. We were not given the pastries and had to go back and ask for them. The sandwiches were made quickly but not very good. Nothing about the food and ESPECIALLY the service would make me want to revisit this place!!! read more

This place is the most inefficiently run establishment I have been to in a long time. There is a line out the door with one person working the counter. He didn't write anything down so I watched as he had to repeat each order several times until he got it right. Which meant the whole long line was waiting as he tried to memorize each order of a dozen doughnuts. When it was our turn. I had to repeat the order 3 times and he still forgot one of the doughnuts. When I realized it, I was unable to get back into the building because there is no way to enter unless you go through the long line. I also asked him 3 times to not include the jalepeno salsa on a breakfast burrito and sure enough, it was there and we were unable to eat it. I have been coming to sun river since I was 5 years old (30 nears now) and this has been a highlight. Unfortunately, I will not go back. read more

We stopped in to get a last minute birthday cake and they had a small but interesting selection of cakes. We took a chocolate with white buttercream filling coated in chocolate mousse and fudge. It was excellent. The cake part was perfectly moist and good flavor. The buttercream and icings were excellent. We also picked up a garlic knot bread thing that we warmed in the oven and had with dinner and I thought it was good, tho the kids said it was "dynamite". So for these two items 5 stars plus the girl at the counter had both useful advice and she was a sweetheart. read more

Hands down everyone just raved about the chocolate cake! It truly tasted homemade and was absolutely moist and delicious. We went back at 10 am and they had more goods than the last time we went in the afternoon. They still weren't fully stocked, though. I got the chocolate glazed donut and it was very tasty. There was a line right to the door which is a good sign. I would recommend going there but make sure you don't get there too late in the afternoon. Initially I was not impressed with "Hot Lava Baking Co." I had purchased a loaf of their sourdough bread at the "Sunriver Country Market" and had picked up a caramel macchiato at their location in the Sunriver square. The bread could very loosely be referred to as "sourdough"; it was dry and the flavor was terrible, overall it was just disappointing especially for $4.99 a loaf. I burnt my mouth pretty severely upon the first sip of the caramel macchiato but after it cooled down a bit, it was pretty good (although my taste buds were burnt at that point so I couldn't really tell the difference). The next day we were heading out for a canoe trip down the Deschutes and wanted a couple sandwiches to take with us. Considering we had purchased the bread from the market instead of from the store itself we decided to give "Hot Lava Baking Co." a second chance and I am very glad that we did! I opted for their French bread on my sandwich and a Chai latte and both were absolutely delicious!!! We didn't eat the sandwiches for a couple hours and they still tasted very fresh, satisfying and full of flavor. At the end of our vacation I was so impressed that I had to get another sandwich for the road! I'll definitely visit the "Hot Lava Baking Co." on our next Sunriver vacation but I won't purchase their bread from the "Sunriver Country Market" again. Also, another reviewer had mentioned their lack of "green" products... They must have remedied that, no styrofoam in sight! read more

We had a lovely late lunch here! Kendell was very helpful and friendly--a great supporter of both Hot Lava and Sunriver. The three of us each had a toasted sandwich on squaw bread or Italian bread. The fresh-baked breads are delicious and the sandwiches were a perfect hearty lunch. We look forward to coming back to Oregon and will keep Hot Lava on our list of places to visit again. read more

I generally don't do this if the food or service is not good, but the treatment from the staff and MANAGER on top of the lousy cake that had clearly been baked days ago and left out to dry before being frosted needed some attention. I ordered a cake for my boyfriends birthday from here and picked it up on Saturday. The girl who rang me up tried to charge me more than she had originally told me on the phone when I ordered a week and a half ago, but she didn't hesitate to make it right and charged me what she had originally told me it would be. There were four of us who tried this cake and we all threw our pieces away. The cake was so dry it was crumbling all over the plate, and not to mention the cream cheese frosting had double the sugar it should've had in it. I called Sunday morning and a staff member answered the phone, I asked for the manager and he told me she was on the phone. I asked if she would call me back when she was done and he said okay and hung up. I assumed he would need my phone number or name and thought it was really rude that he hung up on me. The manager calls me back and I tell her about the quality of the cake, she offers me a refund and I was satisfied with it for making that right. All was fine until I also mentioned to her that I thought the way her staff member handled the phone call came off as rude. She replies in a snarky tone "Apparently we're having an off week with you" and starts saying "mmhmm..mmhmm". Not only are the cakes horrible here, but management doesn't seem to take your business seriously. Your lack of professionalism is astounding. You have lost my business as well as everyone else I mention this to that stays in Sunriver often. read more

I can't figure out what the worst part of my experience was: the terrible customer service, the disappointing sandwiches, or the incredibly long wait for those crummy sandwiches. We ordered our sandwiches when no sandwiches had been ordered in front of us. For some inexplicable reason, it still took what seemed like hours for us to get them. Please note, neither sandwich was toasted or a hot sandwich, but for some reason it still took roughly 15 minutes to get them. When entering the bakery, be prepared for blank stares instead of a friendly greeting. We have been here 3 times now and after each time, we say we will never be back. We have given them 2 more chances than they deserve due to the lack of choices in Sunriver for a "quick lunch." However, I refuse to put myself or my family through that experience again. I will never be back and would caution anyone who would like good food or good customer service. read more
