My kids love their donuts but we know they sell out quickly so I got up early to get there shortly after opening at 6:20am to get a couple of boxes of donuts only to have a 45 minute wait as they hadn't made any yet. I was told they were cooling and it would be 15 min...uh no...it was way longer and they wanted to know exactly what I wanted so they could get those done first which I appreciated but I like to look at the selection and choose a variety. So I opted for coffee and waiting it out....white mocha was okay but not the best. I finally got the donuts but no thanks for waiting, patience...even a comp drip coffee or donut would have been a nice gesture. This is one of the only "breakfast" spots in Sunriver and was very busy this past Saturday. The staff seemed stressed, and I don't blame them. With a line WAY out the door and not enough space to work, it seems hard to do things correctly and efficiently. My fiancee and I both ordered the ham, egg, and cheese on a tomato basil bagel (the only choice besides jalapeno because they were out of plaine). The sandwiches were pretty good, however it took 20 minutes to receive them. We also got a pecan sticky bun which was excellent! The coffee was good, although the pots were TINY and for the amount of people they serve, it would be helpful to invest in larger coffee pots that hold more than a couple cups full. One note, however, is that working in food service myself, I noticed that the eggs for the sandwiches were just sitting out, not being kept at 140 degrees or above by any means...just sitting in a basket and thrown in the microwave to be heated after already being cooked. I didn't get sick, but I can't help but think this is a health violation...they should be keeping product to temperature and not just having them sit in a basket. read more

We went in there to inquire about cupcakes. It was about an hour to closing so two staff members were cleaning up, understandable as no one else was in there. The woman looked up at us, and went back to her task, and the man said hello and looked back down. After standing in front of the bakery case for five minutes without even a glance up or offer to help us, we finally left. How long does it take to wait on someone when no one else is there with two staff present in the front? Disappointing since I was excited Sunriver had a bakery. We'll go to Sintra for the occasional pastry I guess or hit Richard's while in Bend. read more

I haven't had the donuts, but the chicken and cheddar sandwich was delicious. The bread was soft and toasted. The cheese was warm and melted. It was great. I also had terrific service. The smoothie, however was just way too sweet. I was tempted to go back and have a Big Foot donut, but I knew it looked better than it would taste. read more

PSA, I tried to resolve this with the owner. Last Thursday I called and placed an order for a birthday cake for my sister's milestone birthday. We live all over the west coast and come to Sunriver every spring. I went in with my 86 yr old mother to pick up the cake on Saturday afternoon just before closing. Two young workers greeted us and after some time told us that they didn't have our cake. I quickly reviewed my recent phone log and saw my confirmed phone call of Thursday afternoon and dialed the number which rang to the bakery for additional confirmation. Later I would be told via the owner that she checked her call logs and said I never called. I find this odd as no one asked for my phone number on Saturday. They called their boss 3 separate time seeking direction. It became obvious whoever was working Thursday afternoon May 13th didn't put in our order. The girls on Saturday became more and more rude as the scene unfolded. They did offer us a German Chocolate cake at a minor discount but that didn't fit our dietary needs. I was able to describe our order and the person I spoke to in great detail. They gave each other a look that made me suspect that I might not be the first. I asked to speak with the owner and was denied. I then asked if I could leave my name and phone number in which they provided me paper and pen. As I was writing my contact information down my mother started crying and shared with them how special of a night we had planned. They laughed at her and made caustic comments. She was devastated. As I finished writing my contact information I asked if the owner would call me - they said "No, she won't. Why would she? You didn't pay for anything. She doesn't owe you anything." We are beyond baffled at our experience with Hot Lava. We chose to support local especially with the impact of COVID plus we frequent Sunriver yearly. Guess we will be driving to Bend from now on. read more

I saw on the app that they closed at 5 so at 4 I hurried over here. Both Open signs were on but when I walked up to the door I went to open it and it was locked. I called twice and no one inside answered even though I saw several employees working and one even made eye contact with me but ignored me. Management needs to step it up apparently because it appears like the employees are taking matters into their own hands and creating their own hours. Delicious cinnamon twist and baked donut and the coffee was delicious. They had beautiful desserts in the case, but we haven't tried them yet. This is a local business, employing local people from Sunriver. It has a legitimate comfortable feel, not corporate or designer comfortable. I will be back often when I am in town. read more

Moldy bread and stale cookies. Seeing as "Baking Company" is in their name I expected freshly baked goods. Not only could I not smell anything baking but I couldn't see anything freshly baked either. The bread that they say is baked fresh daily was sitting in plastic bags on the counter and the bottom of one of them was covered in mold. I'm not talking a few mold spots, I'm talking a thick field of mold. And when we pointed out the penicillin factory they just took the loaf into the back to see if they had any fresh bread. There was no apology or even the feint of surprise. My quick check of a bakery's quality is to get a cookie. Usually around a dollar, I like to see how well they make something an average six-year-old can make. Stale. I ordered a ginger snap and took one bite and knew it was only going to go downhill from here. When I told them about it, again the cookie went into the back with no surprise from the staff. This time what appeared to be the owner came back and asked what the problem was with the cookie. Stale. "Would you like your $1.50 back or maybe a chocolate chip cookie?" I asked if anything was baked that morning. "Everything is baked fresh daily. Well expect for the ginger snap, those don't move as fast." Hmmmm. I took the suggested chocolate chip and got two for the bargain. Still bad. How do you mess up a chocolate cookie? You can literally freeze the dough for months and bake them fresh as ordered if you had to. It tasted like a stale cookie from the grocery store bakery department. I could tell it used to be chewy but now it just crumbles. And then there's the tell tale bloom on the chocolate chips. That's day old at the least but maybe also poor storage. In either case, not how a "Baking Company" should treat their cookies. Save yourself the disappointment and head the the coffee shop or the grocery store. Both are better options. read more

For more than 30 years I've been coming here.... Probably won't be back. I've watched this donut shop and local icon change ownership multiple times. I'm used to standing in a line 20 people deep in the snow. It's all part of the experience we say. But this trip the service was just terrible. In the middle of ordering they started taking an order from the group behind us and gave them the last of the donuts we were trying to order. How can you do that? When we ordered something else off the menu they screwed it up even though we told them 3 times. When I returned it the owner/manager (didn't identify herself) said the people taking the order isn't who makes it. No kidding... That's how every restaurant works! Then she said the staff were all new. It really felt like she was new and didn't know what to do. I'm disappointed we won't be handing this tradition down to our kids. Plenty of other good options in Sunriver now. Check one of them out instead. read more

Some have claimed that the donuts are like frosted bagels. Others have said they all of the items are deep fried. Neither of these statements is true. The donuts are just uniquely bad. They are baked, not fried, but these are not a low-cal donut alternative (I'm sure that's what you were thinking), because they are thickly frosted with "regular" or "maple." I had the maple encrusted cinnamon bun. The "maple" had a strange aftertaste, and the bun itself seemed stale. My brother got the maple bar. He ate a couple of bites, then threw it out, saying it "wasn't worth the calories." My wife got the chocolate bigfoot. She ate one bite of it. read more

Stopped in this morning because my wife wanted some baked goods to fill her stomach before a day of adventure. We are here obviously during a slow season especially when you add COVID into this as I've never seen Sunriver this slow. On our prior vacations there is usually a line out the door for food/beverages/treats. I walked right in and was greeted as you'd expect but looking around I was not impressed with the lack of cleanliness within the business. The decor was worn and dated as if it was the original decor when the business was first established. Looking at the floor near the slide door cooler for bottled beverages a layer of dirt that I'm surprised a health department would give a passing rating after an inspection. My personal opinion is that during a slow time of year or a decreased volume there would be a great opportunity to conduct a deep and thorough cleaning of your business, even more so with COVID, but that doesn't appear to be the case for this owner. I judge most if not all establishments I eat at on their cleanliness. It tells me whether or not the owner or the employees truly care about the product and service they provide. Unfortunately I was not impressed by this lack of attention to detail here. As for the food the donuts were well received by the kids, the baked good delicious, but the burrito was not what you'd expect. It was half warm, half cold, and although it's 30 degrees outside I'd expect it to be steaming when unraveled after the short two minute drive back to our place. The taste was where it should be but I'd be concerned with the potential for illness without proper temperature. In this case I did not get sick but probably something the restaurant should consider. In reading recent reviews it appears there could be some remodeling forthcoming and new ownership but I will have to wait until our next visit to see if greater expectations are met. read more

My 5 year old enjoyed her donut b/c it was covered in chocolate and sprinkles. They didn't offer plain donuts for my younger who didn't really need chocolate and sprinkles. There were also no plain bagels. Donuts were dry. They didn't have simple syrup to sweeten drinks, so my ice tea was not great. I recommend you eat next door at Good-2-Go. My boyfriend and I always come here in the mornings for coffee and doughnuts when we're in Sunriver. Yesterday we went in at 10:30 on a Sunday morning and they were all out of doughnuts so we settled for a cinnamon roll. Bad choice! The cinnamon roll was so stale and it came with a side of sass from the employee ringing us up. This morning we left earlier so we could get our hands on a doughnut before we rolled out of town and we were disappointed yet again. Not because there wasn't any doughnuts, but because the inside of it was hollow!!! Almost $3 for a hollow doughnut!! And not to mention the extra sass that it came with today from the same employee as yesterday. Also we ordered a vanilla latte and they didn't even put the flavoring in it. Worse customer service EVER!! The owner obviously does not care about customer service. The staff were unfriendly and not helpful. In addition, it was unorganized, no one welcomed or clear signs where to order food. People were coming in cutting lines and it felt like i was in the twilight zone, staff did not direct or make eye contact. When i was finally waited on I asked what was in a pudding cup the girl did not know and had to ask several of the staff to find out the answer. It was a very small inventory and I would think all staff should know the products sold. I ordered a loaf of bread and was handed it without a bag. When i asked for a bag since I was walking the staff rolled her eyes and handed me a bag. We waited 1/2 hour for three bagels that frankly were terrible and did not taste like a bagel but more like bisquick rings. Lastly they got our 3 bagel order wrong but I did not want to go bk in to get the correct order. Would not recommend AT ALL!! read more

Went in this morning. There were two groups in front of us. One single and one group of three. We ordered a donut and a ham & cheese croissant. Nearly forty minutes later, I asked what was up and they were 'making' the croissant sandwich. It's pre-cut ham, pre-cut cheese on a pre-made croissant. They apologized, saying they were 'slammed.' Never offered a refund, free coffee, whatever. Heck, I would have taken a genuine apology/explanation. Then I get my stuff and we're now late for where we were headed, so we bolt fast. I get a near the car and start noshing and it is stone cold. Not even room temp, but straight cold. So, paid way too much, was given lame service, it took well over half an hour to make a ham and cheese croissant and then it's cold. I've never been here before, so maybe it was an off day, but it was way off. read more

We really wanted to love this place, since we're locals and they are pretty much one of two or three places you can go to get a quick sandwich. I ordered the French dip and my husband had a wrap. That and a couple of waters cost us 25.00. They banged around a lot for nearly 12 minutes preparing the sandwiches even though we were the only people in the shop and there were three of them. The French dip they gave me resembled no French dip I had ever eaten before. It was truly awful. They asked me if I wanted it on French bread, I said yes, then they gave me bread meant for a panini. The roast beef was very poor quality. I had four bites from my sandwich and two of those I wasn't able to bite off because the meat was so tough and stringy. The flavor was bland and slightly "off". I did get sick later, but of course I can't blame it on the sandwich for sure even though it was the only thing I had eaten that day. I watched one guy prepare my au jus with hot water from the coffee machine and he added so much water that there really was no au jus left, just steamy brown water. My husband and I don't tend to be picky eaters because I'm a pretty mediocre cook myself, but he couldn't get through half his sandwich before he plunked it down in disgust. Sorry. We wanted to love it. We do hear the breakfast bagels are much better. Maybe they should stick to that part of the business. read more

What?!! I was shocked to see an average of 3 stars on here. Really?!! The coffee is the best I've had in a long while (and I am from PDX) and the sandwiches are awesome!! For one, this is a place in the Sunriver resort area that opens at 6am, and possibly the only one that opens before 7am. The barista, who I think was the owner noted that she wanted to serve the earlybirds. I admit that the donuts and several treats looked "bready" but I had a scone and it was really moist. One of the better scones I've had at a coffee shop. The apple strudel was incredibly rich and had a delicious topping. Both are highly recommended. The two types of coffee had a good contrast: Bold / rich and Medium / bright, acidic. Definitely way better than the coffee I could have made in my resort room. Overall, I write this so that others don't just go with the bad reviews as the gospel. It's good enough and opens early which is enough of a winner when trapped in the resort area. read more

We ended up getting our food late because they did not give us an order number, then the cashier proceeded to scream orders very loudly because nobody knew which one was their order. We come to Sunriver every year & usually always go to Lava at least 2x during our week long stay. The bread & breakfast sandwiches are great! The bread is freshly made & delicious!!! We usually get the breakfast sandwiches or burritos but they also have fresh donuts & muffins that look tasty. The downside is the service. They tend to get really crowded especially in the summer. It's one of my the few places in the village that you can grab a quick bit to go. There is usually a line out the door & some of the employees don't have a sense of urgency which can be frustrating! Seating is limited because it's a pretty small place. Best if you are grabbing your food to go. read more
