For hot pot, this is the best spot for sure. Before these spots opened, we had no where to go for Chinese hot pot. My family and I had been craving it for years and voila, now they have a Korean-Chinese fusion hot pot place which satisfies the craving! The atmosphere is modern and comfortable. You have the option for individual hot pots or shared. This specific night we did individual. There is specific seating for the two different options which is interesting. The Sunday night we arrived early to beat the rush and good thing we did, because we witnessed some parties wait at least an hour or so. First let me begin by saying their service is on point. Our server was the absolute best. She was super nice and accommodating and really just made our experience a billion times better. The food is good. Broths are flavorful, ingredients are very fresh and the sauces are good. All you can eat for 2 hours. And we loved everything we had. This night, I had the shabu shabu which is a fish broth with radish - similar to Japanese Oden. Parking can be tough when it's busy. Kinda hard to find if you aren't familiar with Fairfax. Since there are so many reviews already, here are a few suggestions that may solve other reviewers' frustrations. Use the sauce bar. There are recipes on the board. Get a soup bowl. They're on the shelf under where you get the small sauce bowls. You can use the soup bowl to cool down your food and broth before you eat. Use tick marks or numbers (as intended) on the order form to indicate how many portions of something you want. Sometimes it's a bit arbitrary on the kitchen side in determining how much they give you. (e.g. I write 4 orders of shrimp and I receive 5 pieces, WTF?) Ask for tongs if they didn't offer. Use them on the meats/veggies so you don't contaminate your chopsticks. If you think your broth is bland, go to the sauce bar. Get sauce, dump said sauce into broth. No wait at the (drinks) bar if seats are available. The (eating) bar at the center of the restaurant has the largest amount of space for you to spread your plates of food out and not bump elbows. It may be hard to converse with group members sitting across from you though. They only take reservations for 6 or more. An 18% gratuity is added though. They have 50% off Groupons, LivingSocial and the like. Keep an eye out. read more

Space was pretty ample in the restaurant, they also offer outside seating- which i thought was unique for a hot pot resto. They have a pretty solid sauce bar. Service was ok, all the workers always had their hands full so getting their attention was a little hard sometimes, but wasn't too horrible. Meat, veggie, noodle, seafood choice was pretty ample. This is a way overdue review for me. Since my wife and I moved into the DC area last year, we've ate at several different restaurants and perhaps have gone back and eaten again at just a handful. Of that handful, Hot Spot is the one that we have eaten at the most. So I guess that makes it our de facto favorite restaurant in the area? We eat here at least once a month, and even brought our respective parents here! Food is great! Being that it is Chinese hot pot, you have your choice of up to two broths (if doing a shared pot). We always get the spicy broth, which isn't that spicy though definitely has a kick to it. There is a variety of raw meats and veggies to choose from. Our favorites are the Prime Ribeye, the Lamb, the Shrimp balls, Jumbo Shrimp, Mushroom, Tofu, Cabbage and Potato. We also order the House Marinated Pork sometimes, though I can't say it's a favorite of mine. I feel like the quality of the pork in that selection isn't the best; unlike the other meats, which all seem high-quality. BE CAREFUL NOT TO ORDER TOO MUCH! Since it is AYCE, we always start by ordering one or two portions of items we know we will have. Usually if we have a craving for something more, such as a specific meat, we will then order it one portion at a time til we are stuffed. I think they do charge extra if you waste a lot of food, though we always finish what we order :D Oh I almost forgot about the sauce bar. Love that you can mix up your own concoction of a sauce for dipping with. Or, you can do what I do and just grab a lot of the House Sesame sauce by itself. It is addictive! Service is good for the most part. The servers are friendly and do a great job of taking care of you. They usually are running around tending to multiple tables, but I find it easy to grab their attention when needed. If you have a simple request, usually any of the servers are willing to help. However, there are separate people who serve as "busboys" and bring out the food from the kitchen. Don't bother asking them for anything (like a missing item from your order or water or even extra utensils), I have found that they basically ignore you and won't even pass the request to your server. This has happened to us several times. We usually go for lunch around opening time on the weekends, so we have never had to wait for a table. Overall, this was a below average dinning experience. I love to try new food and cooking styles, but none of the food we ate during our visit to Hot Spot was particularly tasty. I ordered the Shabu Shabu broth as a base for my hot pot. It was extremely bland, just sort of salty and flavorless. My boyfriend ordered a spicy broth of some kind, and we ended up sharing that out of necessity. We wouldn't order either broth again. The meat and vegetables seemed fresh, no complaints there. We ordered a side of marinated pork and it was easily the tastiest thing we ate. Everything else we ordered was (understandably) unseasoned, with the intent to gain flavor from the cooking broth, but because the broths were disappointing, the meat and veggies suffered. Apparently, we were supposed to receive dipping sauces, but this was not offered to us by the wait staff. We came here because of a Groupon my family had purchased. I think Hot Spot is a little over hyped of a place to be honest. Expect to wait for an hour if you come on a weekend with two or more people and want to be seated indoors. I was going to take my name off the waiting list because I didn't want to wait that long, but the hostess asked if I wanted to sit outside in order to be seated right away. I thought she should have asked me that from the beginning.....but oh well. So we sat outside since it was a nice night. We got the spicy broth and tom yum broth, since you get a choice of two if you choose a group hot pot. If you don't like weird surprises, don't get the spicy broth!!! Our waiter told us about the peppercorns in the broth that make your mouth go numb, but I really didn't think it would be that big a deal. I didn't like it at all and it made my taste buds go away. I do recommend the tom yum broth however. Prepare to spend a lot of money on small portions. We got a combination of seafood, different types of meats, fish balls, fish cakes, dumplings and vegetables. If you want a good amount of each type of seafood, you better write a number next to the name instead of checking it off. We checked off jumbo shrimp and received 3 small pieces of shrimp....the house marinated beef, fish balls, fish cakes and dumplings are good though. They have an option of all you can eat for about $23 a person, which you should do if you plan to eat a lot. I like the fact that you're able to make your own sauces and they have a bulletin board with recommended recipes of sauces you can follow. Coming here was an entirely new experience for me and I loved every minute of it. We came here with an incredibly large group on a Saturday night and despite our size they were able to accomodate all of us and stayed patient throughout. To sum up, if you are not sure what hot pot is, think Melting Pot but only the meat portion. There are 4 types of broth you can order and a multitude of meat, seafood and veggies that you can order and it is all you can eat for only $22.00. There is a station where you can make your own mix of dipping sauces. I fell in love with the taro root cooked in our broth. It took some time to cook but I could have eaten just that. So tasty! Highly recommend but beware... It gets super busy and there isn't a lot of space up front to wait for a table. Reservations are encouraged. We had a chance to speak with the owner and were encouraging him to bring his restaurant east to Maryland. I really wanted to like this restaurant :/ My fiance and I were very excited about trying Hot Spot. We invited a few other friends and went in at 7:30pm on a Saturday night. We anticipated that there would be a wait and was told it would be no longer than an hour for our party of 5. Fast forward an hour later and we no longer see the people who had been waiting with us because they're all seated and now we're standing around with other people who came longer after us and we could swear a bunch of groups who arrived after us were seated before us. Fast foward another 30 minutes and there are a bunch of open tables that have been cleaned off and not set up. We ask the hostess stand again when we will be seated and they say that the large rush was being cleared and we'd be seated after the tables were set up. I have never seen a restaurant function this way. The busboys and servers were NOT clearing and cleaning tables one at a time and seating groups one table at a time...we literally had to wait as they cleared and set up all the tables at the same time and then seated a throng of customers. So we arrived at 7:30pm and were finally seated at 9:00pm... RIDICULOUS. If the restaurant was packed we might understand...but to stare at empty, unset-up tables for the last 30 minutes of our wait was infuriating. THE FOOD: We were so hungry and scarfed down the food. It was pretty good...nothing ridiculously impressive. The sauce bar is tiny and in one small area... so you have to wait if there are a lot of people. It might have been a better idea to have 2 sauce bars. I read previous reviews about the scallops being frozen and the subpar seafood and I'd have to agree. The beef was probably the best. If we ended things here... I'd probably give the restaurant 3 stars. 4 for food and 1 for service... and then been generous and given them 3 stars, but that's not the end of the story. THE MORNING AFTER: The reason why I gave Hot Spot 1 star. Woke up this morning and we are all having GI issues. My fiance and I have been in and out of the bathroom. Although i would give Hot Spot 5 stars for it's "hip" atmosphere and "innovative" concept - I give it 1 star for the food itself. I get it, you get a lot of food, the service is wonderful, and cooking your own food at your own table is a cool idea. However, the food itself was bland and unsavory. I assumed that dipping different meats and seafood into different broths would miraculously turn the meat full of flavor but no, that did not happen. It tastes like it sounds. Plain cooked meat. The broth is too hot to drink and is used solely for the cooking of the meat/seafood, so I couldn't even tell the difference between the two broths we got (shabu shabu and the other one that starts with a T). Maybe the entire experience could have been saved if I had known the right sauces to use with my meats, but I couldn't imagine any of the ones provided to make the cooked meat taste any better. For example, one of the sauces was the hot and sour sauce you put on egg rolls. I can't imagine how that sauce could be a good combination with any of the meats provided. Hot Spot, a hipper and livelier hot pot restaurant off Fairfax Circle, does a very good job at its one menu item - Chinese hot pot. Even though the clientele (and ownership) is probably more Korean, the execution is pretty spot on. About the only things you won't find here are some of the more 'exotic' meats like intenstines and other parts of animals that can be off-putting to non-Asians, they do offer standard items like all the cuts of meat (beef, pork, chicken, lamb) as well as beef tongue and tripe. The broth eas excellent. We had half Sichuanese mala, and half shabu shabu. The Sichanese broth was both sufficiently spicy and had enough peppercorns in it to numb my lips. The flat AYCE pfice of $22.95 is a good deal if you are hungry, and beats the other hot pot places that charge by the ingredient. All the ingredents were fresh and the server came by often to check on us to take our additional orders or meats an veggies, as well as to refill the soup stock in our pot. The place is very popular, and there was a line for tables at 7pm on a Sunday night. Didn't make reservations as we were dining at off hours (2PM on a Sunday). First impressions? Condensation on the windows greeted you and on a blistering cold winter day, it was a perfect welcome. Inside, we took in the hip decor and listened to Bruno Mars playing in the background. The eight of us were seated at the center communal table as the place was still busy. Any party over four is given individual broth pots. Half of us tried the spicy version and the rest split evenly between shabu shabu (clear broth) and kimchi broth. We did start off with the tickets. The host told us for eight people, orders of four at a time should be plenty. Apparently we were a group of big eaters because we ended up reordering everything multiple times. Thankfully after two hapless attempts at the ticket system they finally switched to verbal orders. One order meant one piece like sushi ordering, except in the case of the mini dumplings. The self serve sauce station was chaotic. Not sure if the placement of the canisters led to splatters on a ton of the dipping sauce bowls but that was a little bit of a turnoff. A positive? The servers were plentiful and we kept them busy! They were friendly and happily put in our many reorders. If your burners ran low, they were quick to bring a fresh, lit one. The lamb (no strong flavor and fatty), rib eye (tender), dumplings (we must have had about eight orders of these thumbnail sized dumplings), little octopus, clams, and scallops were great. Indeed we tried just about everything on the menu from crawfish and shrimp to lotus root and beef balls (the fish balls were better). Our only complaint was with the cost. At $22.95 per person for "all you can eat" it felt a little pricey for a late lunch. And for parties of eight or more gratuity is automatically tacked on. Other than that, we enjoyed the meal. The quality of the seafood, meat, and vegetables are top notch and service is outstanding. I had a lot of fun at Hot Spot with a big group. I got the spicy broth which had just the right amount of spice for me. I tried to make a few sauces, but I honestly didn't really need them. There aren't so many menu items that you are overwhelmed by the different options; instead the menu is quite smart and is full of dishes that are delicious and the favorites of all of my Korean and non-Korean friends. You should definitely try to bulgogi sliders and the Korean pancake for appetizers. I tried the spicy broth when I was there for the grand opening. The spicy broth is a good base for whatever veggies/meats you decide to add to your hot pot, but you'll have to dip everything in your sauce (I recommend "the Best Sauce" - the recipe is tacked up by the sauce station), which is fine because this is how you're meant to eat hot pot. Any meat you choose will be very tasty. The last time I was there, I saw a couple at another table order the kimchi broth and blue crab. I'm definitely going to try that the next time I go. Amazing! New favorite restaurant! We tried it here based on a Group-on. This is basically Asian Fondue! Everyone got their own cooking broth which I loved! I had the spicy broth and it was amazing! You get to decide what meats, veggies, rice, noodles that you want them to bring out. There is even a sauce bar to mix your own sauces at! The meats cook in your pot and are good after ten seconds! Everything was delicious. My kids LOVED this place and have talked about it EVERYDAY since we were there. Our server was amazing! I think his name was Quinten? I've been coming here for a few years. The initial draw being the butter beer (is that odd?), but the food keeps me a frequent patron. Hot Spot is such an amazing place to bring friends or just overall a great place to go for some great hot pot. Its a great meal to have conversation over and a very nice outing for groups. I've been to a few other hot pot places, although I'm not a connoisseur by any means. My first experience was in DTLA at Yojie shabu-shabu, which you paid for each meat/seafood portion individually, and ever since then I've been hooked on the Asian way of fondue. Hot Spot is $22.99 for all you can eat hot pot (within the reasonable 2 hour time limit). You can choose from many different broths I favor the Tom-Yum and the herbal broth. There's a wide array of meats, fish, shell fish, veggies, and other items to choose from. Their sauce bar is extensive and the servers are always happy to suggest things to you if you're lost. I've also been to Riverside hotpot in Rockville, but I prefer Hot Spot for their consistency and relaxed atmosphere. Keep doing your thing Hot Spot and I'll keep returning. read more

I don't think this place is all that and a bag of chips. You can imagine my excitement when I first heard of this place from all my friends. All you can eat hot pot at a reasonable price?! So I organized my crew and headed there for my little bro's birthday, they sat us fast because we took the bar area. You get your own little hot pot but the broth itself was either bland or too spicy. When we asked to switch it out or for other broth to be added to dilute the spicyness, they said no! They told us that we can't switch it even though we don't like it... and we just said ok. Other than that, the waiter was attentive and he was super nice and probably also 14 years old. The meat wasnt that good, it wasn't fresh and chewy or fatty like fatty beef should be at hot pot. The shrimp was decent and the portions are small so watch out if you do come and order. The veggies could be fresher and nothing stood out. They DO have a make your own sauce bar which was good. Other than all the things I said, good service and mediocre food - just dont set your expectations too high and it should be ok for a quick hot pot fix. I won't be coming back though. The service is either a hit or a miss, but the food will always be amazing (probably cause your cooking it yourself). Wait time are also crazy on weekend nights and you're probably not going to get good service those nights so avoid coming during weekend evenings, its just common sense. I loved this place! All you can eat for $22 is unbeatable. They have so many things on offer and it's all fairly good quality. A couple of things- I think the beef balls- were kind of funky. I was also a little disappointed that my favorite hot pot item, the lamb, was sliced too thick. The sauces are good, but I'm used to having a larger/different selection. The service here is impeccable- the waiters/waitresses were all super friendly and attentive. We left a $20 tip because it was so good. The food was pretty good, and the place would actually be a great spot if not for the staff. We received more help from a young man that wasn't even assigned to us. Our waitress practically ignored us the entire time and it was near impossible to get her attention. My water cup was sitting empty for almost the entire time and she walked directly past it without filling it up. It wasn't even partially busy, but the staff did nothing but stand at the front and chat with each other. Very frustrating. This place is DELICIOUS. This is the 2nd time I've come here, but my first review of the place. My gf and I came last night. The temperature dropped to the 60's from the 90's, so we decided we needed something warm and dericious. Hot Pot hit the spot! We had the kimchi broth and spicy broth. The kimchi broth was good, but nothing to rave about. The spicy broth though had an amazing flavor to it. It wasn't just spicy, which I hate. We had almost every meat/seafood/veggie on the menu. The best ones were the marinated beef (bulgogi) and I loved all the seafoods too. I'm a big fan of tripe and the beef tongue too (things that my gf won't eat). When it comes down to it I feel like you can pretty much boil anything and it will taste amazing here. The vegetables were all so fresh and delicious. I love the fact that they have all sorts of mushrooms (huge shroom fan). The noodles were also amazing...clear and udon being my favorites. Yeah the meat/veggies/noodles were great, but one of my favorite things about this place was being able to create your own sauces. They have a bunch of different hot sauces and condiments you can mix to your taste. Of course all this needs to be washed down with a couple bottles of SOJU. read more
