Solid hot pot!! I love how many broth options they have, even got a veggie one that's GF (a person in my party is a GF). I've been there twice. First time got tom yum broth, second time got Szechuan peppercorn. Both broths were amazing! The fresh food iems options were pretty good (although scallops came out super frozen, still liked them). Sauce bar was good, their house sauce was good, so you don't even need to create your own but they got stuff there if you want to make your own. We were told that we had to wait 45 mins but we only waited 10 mins so that's a huge plus!! Our server was great. It's convenient - you don't need waste time to cook or clean, you have plenty of variety for meats, seafood, vegetables and dipping sauces. I love the huge menu they have and their sauce bar. If you can manage to find parking (the lot is a hot mess), then I would highly recommend this place. Consider this review mostly for the fun factor. Since I had an "Amazon Local" coupon which gave us $30 off our bill, we gave this place a try this past Thurs. evening. As other reviewers have already stated, this is an "all you can eat" Asian "hot pot" restaurant, wherein you're given a form to check off your broth & ingredient preferences, go to a sauce bar where you select or mix up your own dipping sauces, & then go to it. The ingredient list is all-inclusive & somewhat daunting. Everything from Prime ribeye beef, lamb, pork, to tiny baby octopus. Udon noodles to tofu to dumplings to fish balls to mushrooms, & Asian greens. Can't fault them on selection/variety. Sauces were the same - a dizzying selection of make-your-own-ingredients - rice wine vinegar, soy, fish sauce, chili-garlic sauce, as well as house-made sauces (which were delicious). Also garnishes like thin-sliced thai peppers, minced garlic, scallion, etc., etc. You can take/sample as many as you like. Out of the 5 broths available (Herbal, Spicy/Xtra Spicy, Veggie, Shabu (Japanese fish-flavored), & Kimchi) we chose the Xtra Spicy & the Shabu. It comes served - boiling away - in a large steel pot with a divider, which they place on the smooth glass cooktop square in the center of the table that one can monitor via a dial under the end of the table. For our ingredients we chose chicken (absolutely see-thru paper-thin semi-frozen slices of white-meat chicken (fabulous - cooked in seconds), mussels (worthless - 6 tiny empty shells - no meat), scallops (ok), shrimp (semi-pre-cooked, in-the-shell, like rubber, & messy/difficult to shell after a broth soak), squid (ok), flounder (arrived partially cooked, but really nice), octopus (whole fresh raw baby octopus - difficult to eat, as they scrunch up into a golf ball upon hitting the broth & turn to rubber rapidly; had to knaw off tentacle by tentacle; rather unpleasant), shrimp & fish balls (ok, but a bit hard & rubbery), shitake mushrooms (meh), udon noodles (ok - I mean, it's hard to mess up noodles). The paper-thin slices of chicken were the standout, & we ended up placing a 2nd order of that. Both broths were delicious, & it was nice to have the mild Shabu broth aside the spicy one so that we could make the spicy one a little milder if we wished. The whole Szechuan peppercorn pods simmering away in the spicy broth were wonderful. So nice that they don't dumb this down. As for the reviewer who posted they charge you $10 if you don't finish everything you order, that's not exactly correct. Here's the exact quote printed plainly at the top of every order form: "Please do not order more than you can eat so we can keep our prices low. If we find food is left in excess we will charge an additional 10% (NOT $10, like the previous reviewer posted) more". Also they charge a $2 "Change Soup Cost", if you order a broth you decide you don't like & want a different one. Frankly, while I'm not normally a fan of restaurant "rules", I agree with both of these. It's "all you can eat", & the portions they bring you are small enough where anyone with half a brain should be able to pace themselves & figure out how much they can eat before reordering. I can completely understand them wanting to control the raw food waste. When we left, I think there may have been one baby octopus unaccounted for, & no - we weren't charged for it - lol!! They also charge an automatic 18% gratuity to parties of 6 or more, & while they do also state their "***PLEASE RESPECT OUR 2 HOUR DINING LIMIT***", we didn't notice anyone getting kicked out - lol. One little bugaboo was that they gave us each 2 sets of disposable chopsticks - I assume one set to cook the raw food with & one to eat with - but let's face it, it was difficult to keep both identical sets apart, so I ended up holding my same chopsticks in the hot vigorously boiling broth for a minute or so before removing & eating my food. As an "all you can eat" place, prices are standard. Adults pay $22.99/person, Child $14.99/person, 6 & under free. Hubby had a Sapporo ($10), & I enjoyed 2 TsingTaos ($5 ea.) While we were there the clientele was about 60/40 Asian/Caucasian, with quite a few young families. It's a relatively small place, so I can see why it's most likely VERY busy on weekends. Service was excellent - friendly explanations about everything/anything since we were first-time visitors, broth refills without asking, etc. Bill before coupon was a little over $70 or so; after coupon, around $44. We did the right thing when using a coupon & tipped on the pre-coupon balance, so the meal ended up around $60 or so. Bottom Line: The experience itself was different & fun. If we hadn't had the coupon, would it have been $70+ worth of fun? Probably not. We may return, but most likely not unless another coupon raises its head. read more

This is one of my favorite places to go if I have a big appetite. I have only recently been introduced to hotpot and I am hooked. Despite going to some of the best hotpot around (little sheep and others in Cali) this one is my favorite because of the marinated pork and sauce bar. If you are a sauce genius like me, you can combine the sauces to make a super sauce that tastes way better than the sum of its parts. You should try to go during off hours because this place is generally very busy and sitting at the bar with the mini hotpot is annoying. Came in with a group of friends for happy hour during the week and this place was packed. Glad we had a reservation or we would have been waiting. We were seated and then handed food and drink menus. The table ended up getting Long Islands as they were on special. My friend who had been gave us a run down of the place and explained how the ordering worked. I ended up getting a regular broth and picked up a few sauces at the back. It didn't take long for the food to make its way to the table and everyone began dipping the various meats and veggies into their own little pots for cooking. As we went along we ordered more food and sampled each other's stuff. We had a second round of drinks before happy hour ended and finished off the food on the table. The main thing I want to complain is the SERVICE! We have the dishes and hot pot ready for a long time, but no one come to turn on the fire. I believe there are enough waiters at that moment. Really enjoyed my $~25 hot pot all you can eat experience. Your experience comes with seafood/vegetables/meats/fishballs. My favorite ingredient by far was the fried tofu and scallops. When you, your partner/family, friends are too lazy to prepare and buy the ingredients yourself to make at home. Just head over to Hot Spot where everything is prepared all neatly on a plate brought out to you on your table. I learned you can get individual broth pots or a big group one. We opted for the communal pot split into two different broths--one filled with the super spicy broth (which wasn't that spicy) and the fish one which was pretty bland. If you like flavor, go with the most spicy broth. There's a little checklist that you can choose which ingredients you want, but they were kind enough to bring us out a sampling of all the ingredients they offer--so no choosing for us. You can request an extra order if you like something. There's a sauce/dipping station towards the back of the restaurant where you can make your hotpot dipping sauce--mine was abundant in cilantro, bbq sauce, and sesame paste. I made the mistake of using the jalapenos in my sauce the first batch, and now I just stick to the my three key ingredients. I thought the service was efficient and friendly. The only part that I didn't enjoy about my meal was the obnoxiously loud korean pop music. Maybe my ears were sensitive that day, but I was really looking forward to a relaxing Sunday afternoon meal over hot pot in silence or easy jazz or easy listening music, not rambunctious Korean pop music. The reviews are true. This place is really good and one of the very few hot pot places in the DMV area. You can choose from four different broths. I had the spicy broth, which is probably the most potent broths out of all of them. It was spicy, but not too spicy! Honestly, the food was still flavorful without the sauces with the spicy broth. Order up because each "portion" is very sparse. For example, one order of shrimp is like two shrimps. One order of fish balls is like two balls. I read from everyone else that getting more food was slow... but I didn't have a problem with that. I kept ordering 10-15 min. before I would finish the rest of my food because of what everyone was saying but they came out with my new order of food within 2 minutes. It was busy too during dinner time! So not sure why the fluctuation in service between people... Also, why is everyone obsessed with [alcoholic] butter beer? It's one of the most disgusting things I've ever tasted. Took one sip and to send it back with the waitress because it was so bad! It was extremely, extremely sweet yet bitter at the same. I have never tasted anything like it and I'm glad! Never again. But nonetheless, great food and idea of a restaurant! Just no butter beer next time for me :) read more

I don't care what you guys say about eating hot pot outside. I don't like buying million of things and then prepare for a hot pot at home. I love this place because all I have to do is sit down and eat, since they bring the food out for you. This is so much more convenient than doing at home. You don't have to buy them, prepare them or even cleaning the left over and put it back to the fridge. The price is decent if you plan to eat a lot of meat. I went to this place twice and I love it. Unlimited meats, vegetables and seafoods. What else can you ask? I absolutely love this place with their unlimited amount. If you have food allergy, they have a small pot just for you, so you don't have to share with people. The only downsides of this place are the place is too small and not enough room for big party and the management part. First the restaurant itself is small to have big party, so just go with like 6 people max. The table only fit 6 people comfortably. We had like 10 people last time and I could barely even move around or have spaces for food items and drinks. It was ridiculously small. Second, their hostess staffs are not good at managing seats for customers. They tend to give tables to people they know before the customers and this is absolutely not acceptable. Just because you have friends come and eat, it doesn't mean you have the right to treat all customers differently. I was very upset with that since I feel like they need a professional training on that. Overall it is a great place to have hot pot with your family and friends. I was not a fan of hot pot restaurants but after my first experience at Hot Spot, I started to appreciate them more. Price is usual for an all you-can eat restaurant but I was mainly surprised by the wide variety of broths, meats, and add ons. We had the kimchi broth and it was not very spicy, just on point. Meats and sides were brought very fast and it was fun trying to create my own sauce at the sauce bar. I was satisfied with the service, although we came in late at night when it was not busy. A friend recommended this place and since I was craving some hot pot I had to come here. I was very surprised with my experience here (good and bad surprised, that is) but overall I really enjoyed it. ATMOSPHERE: Very trendy! I like that a lot because it was very unique and hip. We got there at 5:30pm on a Sunday but as soon as we were seated (which was immediately) the restaurant packed up fast. Actually I noticed many open tables when we walked in but the hostess had to look at her seating chart which made obvious the popularity of this place due to the amount of reservations they had. When we left there were at least 10 people waiting to be seated in this restaurant (that's how popular this place is) and I was impressed. SERVICE: The hostess was very pleasant, as was our waiter (I forgot his name but he was really nice). There were a few mix-ups - the man who brought out our broth accidentally put it on the table next to us and we had to ask for rice when we had already ordered it the first time on our ordering sheet (I explain this below if this confuses anyone). This can happen anywhere and personally I don't really mind it much and this is NOT the reason why they get -1 star from me. FOOD: This place is an ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT HOT POT ONLY restaurant (at least, I THINK they only serve hot pot because that's all I saw available). The fact that it was all-you-can-eat was a lovely surprise! You order exactly the same way you would order sushi a la carte (you get a sheet with a pencil and you just check off everything you want). They had a lot of unique Asian inspired drink options to choose from but I was already doing my once a week splurge by eating out so I stuck with water. I ordered the Kimchi broth (they have 5 different broths which was also another surprise...yes they have vegetable broth). The broth was bland in my opinion but I always find myself adding stuff to the broth at any Asian place I go to so this isn't a reason for their -1 star. I had to add a lot of condiments to the broth to make it taste just right (they have a lot of condiments to choose from btw). I highly recommend ordering their pork dumplings (I rate this 5 stars) because they taste AMAZING and they're in such a cute and convenient size for placing in your soup spoon. We ordered the chicken and pork and they were cut so finely that they cooked really fast which was great. Here was the disappointing thing that surprised me very much: they didn't have broccoli. They had something called Chinese broccoli but these were long and have leaves in place of florets. These were not cut to a convenient size and so it was hard to eat (I ended up using my hands). Actually, their overall vegetable options were disappointing. They had 2 kinds cabbage (Napa and regular) and like 3-4 different types of mushroom, then something called lotus root, in addition to taro root, bamboo, potato (first time I've ever seen potato on an Asian menu which was cool) and I may be missing like two or three others. Clearly, as you can see, half the veggie menu was redundant. They really should consider adding regular broccoli, carrots, baby corn, celery, bok choy and idk what else. We ordered mushroom and they brought out like three pieces of it (not whole...these were pieces and I'm pretty sure I only saw slices of mushroom stalks). I mean...I understand that we could have simply ordered more but that was so bizarre. So with all that that's why they get a -1. We also ordered the fish cakes and fish balls- okay I've just come to the conclusion that these two items are weird flavorless foods no matter where I order them so I have no opinion. WILL I COME BACK? Yeah! Now that I've tried it once I'm more knowledgable about what to order. I would love to try their marinated beef and maybe get even more adventurous and try out all those different kinds of mushrooms they have (hey, it's all you can eat right? Clearly it was a mistake for me to leave without trying all of them!). I just love eating veggies so much that I was just blown that there was no broccoli :'(. Mark my words, hot pot restaurants are the next Korean BBQ. Why? Because it's fun, social, and you can easily pass hours on end chatting, eating, and drinking at very good restaurants like Hot Spot. Having grown up in a Chinese home, we would occasionally have my extended family over for "huo guo" (try to pronounce at will) where two massive pots of bubbling stock were put on portable stoves on the dining table with mountains of thinly sliced raw meats, seafood, veggies, noodles, and more ready to be cooked and then dipped in any variety of sauces. It took an entire day of work - from shopping, soup making, garnish prepping, and the like before everyone could eat. Was it worth it? Oh hell yeah! Now, however, a hot pot dinner party doesn't have to be reserved for special occasions. Dining at Hot Spot is an all-you-can-eat experience that deserves at least one night of your life. After sitting at your table, you can have a choice of regular broth (non spicy), spicy broth, or both in a divided pot to cook your food in. You then choose your meats, veggies, seafood, and more off a check list and they will bring it out right to your table. Some examples include marinated rib eye, lamb, a variety of fish fillets, dumplings, spinach, bok choy and more. Depending on what broth you cook it in, you get an nice infusion of flavour into the food. After fishing your food out of the broth with little wire baskets, you gotta dip it into your own sauce creation. At the sauce bar, you can combine any variety of sauces to your liking and create something truly unique. Things like sesame sauce, sliced chili, garlic, soy sauce, and herbs are laid out ready to be mixed into something that can range from tame to as wild as that dream you had last week that you don't want to discuss with your coworkers for fear of being judged. So how does the food and everything fare? For the most part, well. The meats were all tender, the veggies fresh, and the broths were also pretty good. The spicy broth does have a kick, but it isn't too hot that it will overpower what you're cooking. I personally prefer it to the blander "regular" broth. At the start, the food came out fast and in nice sized portions, but by the end the meal the night I came, the portions were notably smaller. How small? Well, we checked off an order of mushrooms on what would be my table's last card and guess what we got? One, yes one walnut sized button mushroom. Whaaa? That hiccup aside, there were also a few times when we ordered drinks and they never arrived, our broth never got topped off, or our food never arrived. I'm hoping it was due to teething problems since the restaurant is still relatively new and will be worked out soon. Inside the restaurant, you'll find a thoroughly modern and nice space. There are large tables, a bar, and elevated seating with mini hot-pots-for-one as well. In terms of value, at $23 per person, this place is pretty expensive, but you do get plenty of food for your money and you save a lot of hassle versus trying to recreating this at home. You will be leaving the restaurant smelling of your food however just fyi. Also, finding this restaurant is a little tricky - look for the Home Depot and Hot Spot is in the small shopping center directly across the street from it. Finally, reservations, especially for Friday and the weekends, are highly recommended. $22 all you can eat hot pot. they have a very very wide variety of items that you can order from different seafoods (shrimp, crab, mussels, clams, crawfish, scallops) to meats (rib eye, pork, lamb, chicken) and tons of different veggies, dumplings and fish balls. i was very impressed. plus you get to pick 2 of 4 different soup bases. and their sauce bar has everything and more that you would want. personally if you can make the broth yourself though, this is only worth it for a group of 2-3. because you could probably buy the same stuff and make it at home for the same amount of money or less if you have more than 4 people. but this is probably the best hot pot option in nova. read more

I have always loved hot spot but was a bit upset at my last visit. I come here often and love the food. It's a bit cramped inside and sometimes during busy hours it's a little hard to flag down a server but it gets crazy busy so you have to be understanding. In order to be seated your whole party must be there. Which is also understandable. Sometimes the seafood can be so frozen you can tell it's been in the freezer for a while and doesn't taste good but I generally just order other stuff when that happens. My last experience though I went with a friend to discuss some business matters to have dinner and another friend showed up about thirty minutes later. We were busy eating and talking and didn't realize how much time had gone by. A very nice waiter did let us know we were nearing our two hour limit but said we could have fifteen minutes extra because a guest came later. Once we hit our limit though a girl came up and turned off our stove saying "sorry ladies your time is up!" And then immediately another girl came and grabbed the pot very quickly off our table. It was so upbrupt and rude the manner that they did everything we felt we had been kicked out! If we were approached a little bit more politely we wouldn't have minded. Personally I had never reached the two hour limit before so I never experienced the "kick-out" but it ruined my whole experience. I completely understand that it's busy and they need tables but the manner in which they handled it left me quite upset when I left. I've since then been looking for a different hot pot spot to frequent. read more

Oh Hot Spot, I love you so. I've visited Hot Spot at least 4 times by the time of this review and have never been disappointed. I've done the individual pot and the family style pot (which is a large pot split in half for two soups) and have enjoyed each experience. I love Hot Spot because it allows me to enjoy Hot pot with my friends without going to the store and buying a bunch of veggies and meats and being fearful I'll have too many left overs or not enough food. The service is always good. My one complaint is the most recent time we went, we clearly marked 3 servings of fatty brisket and 1 sirloin, but received equal servings of both. Also, we made 3 rounds of order for food and every time at least 1 item we marked on the list was forgotten, but not a big deal since its AYCE and can just order it next round. Sauce bar is nice, but can get crowded. read more

I've only been here a few times, but all of the waiters and waitresses have been nice and came back in a timely manner. I like their sauce bar where you can mix and make any sauce you desire for your dipping pleasure. They also have some recommendations on the chalk board right above if you don't know what you want to mix. This place is all you can eat that includes meat, veggies, seafood, and other side variety. The two broths I recommend the most is the shabu shabu broth and the spicy broth. Or you can get the shabu shabu broth and ask for the spicy paste on the side and add as you please. I'd like to note that the broth is supposed to be a bit bland and not super flavorful. The flavor comes from the sauces. That's my opinion anyways because you're not eating soup. You're dipping your desired toppings and then taking them out and eating it when it's finished cooking just like you would with fondue. With that said, I think this place is pretty good for it's price of $22.99 for all you can eat. They also have outside seating area where you can bring your dog and leash him up if you'd like. One of the original hot pot locations in the DMV area if not the first. Concept is simple. Choose your broth. Choose your proteins, veggies, seafood, and add-ins. These are all "re-fillable." There is a sauce station in the back where you can make your own sauce for dipping. All this at one price. Typically orders for proteins, veggies etc are placed by table/groups of 2 or 3 that is ordered by marking it a sheet a paper with pencil just as you would order rolls when ordering sushi. No need for tip if you have large groups since it is already included. This is great for families who love hot pot or those who can throw down on hot pot. For me it is just "okay" since I prefer already seasoned/prepared foods. However my last visit was enjoyable with family even as a group of 10. Also don't forget about their alcoholic beverages they offer. =) Favorites are the spicy broth with spinach, beef, and dumplings with a cracked egg at the end of a meal. read more

This place wasn't as bad compared to the last time I went a while back when it first opened so they definitely changed it. I wish the food would be fresh and bigger in portions size but you get for the price of it. Most of the selections are frozen but everything else is not bad in terms of vegetables and others. The one thing that really tops it off is their customizable sauce that you can make from the choices they have on a chalkboard wall. We went to this place after reading about it in the NoVA magazine as a hot spot in the area. This place is the Chinese version of the Melting Pot. Having had plenty of hot pot in China, I have always been looking out for a good place to have something similar and authentic. For about $22 you can get unlimited refills of seafood, meat, and veggies to dip into your broth of choice. You can either do it "family style" which is one big pot in the middle, or have individual pots brought out and everyone can have their own mini hot pot. I love spicy foods, so I went with the spicy broth. My wife stuck to the Shabu Shabu. Their drink menu is huge and features many unusual items, such as butter beer, watermelon and pineapple soju. We started off with the butter beer since we had read so much about it in other reviews. I also tried the pineapple soju which came in an actual pineapple. Absolutely loved it, but I think I will just get the drink next time. The have a huge spice bar where you can make your dipping sauce to suit your palate using all the numerous ingredients they have. The hostesses didn't do much at all and finally we decided to go sit at the bar. The bar tender was friendly and knowledgeable as well. However on our second visit, we were seated at a table and the waitress we had was more interested in talking to a guy sitting on the next table and was not professional at all. We had to ask a different waitress several times for drink refills. We went to Hot Spot for dinner last night b/c my friend had to use her groupon since it'll expire next week. When I got there, I guess others have the same idea. it was 8pm, and the place was packed like no other. I put my name down and the wait would be about 30-45 minutes. I waited and 15 minutes later, we got seated on the big counter. Personally I would prefer a table with the big pot instead of individual ones. Big shared pot will boil faster. The food was good, meat were fresh, however, they lost my second ticket so we had to wait a while to reorder. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. Overall, it was a good experience. What's not to love? Reasonable prices, lots and lots of food and everything is customized to your liking. When we walked in, we were quoted an 1.5 hour wait time. But we only ended up waited about 30-40 mins, which wasn't bad at all. We went to get drinks next door at Bon Chon while we waited. It was a bit overwhelming once they sat us at the table and handed us the menus. When in doubt, just ask your waiter. We sure did. And she was able to walk us through each option... step by step. They also have a sauce bar... I saw some people mixing different ingredients together... I would definitely ask the waiter what sauce to pair with different menu options. For our broth we got vegetarian and spicy. Veggie was a bit bland. Spicy was true to it's name. We ordered lots of meats, seafood and veggies. My favorites were the fatty brisket, ribeye, shrimp and the bok choy. I would definitely come here again. Look out for their groupons. read more

I love this place, the broths are very tasty, the extra spicy brother isn't too bad if you can handle spiciness. They have very good service and the sauce bar os very nice and made to your liking. The best part of Hot Spot besides their soup is their condiment bar. I always end up hating myself the following but there's a bucket of crushed garlic that goes so perfectly with their sesame sauce. read more

I always have a great time here. Love the broths and accompaniments. Sauces are great. Ambience is trendy. Servers are young and friendly. I'm obviously not at authority to comment on the "authenticity" of the hot pots, but for people who enjoy a little bit of fusion, this place is great. read more

I heard a lot of people talk about this place and I thought "why not give it a go?" Our table got the half and half broth. One spicy and one Shabu Shabu. This place is great for all you can eat and they have a great sauce bar, where you can make your own sauces by following the recipes or just have it your way. The service was pretty prompt and the selection of wines, sake, and beers were pretty great. The food was good but probably not worth $21 per person, but if you can eat and get your moneys worth then this place is good. I also didnt like how this place was so humid, I felt so uncomfortable and sticky because of all the cooking that was going on. I feel like after awhile you get tired of what you are eating though. The place was spacious and they had bar-like seating down the middle and tables around the resturant. Over all it was alright but not for the price. I don't know, man. Boiled food is just not my favorite. I was hoping that the broths would be so motherfuckin' amazing that I'd enjoy eating boiled food, but I didn't find that to be the case. The spicy broth was pretty decent except that you have to pick around a billion peppercorns that you REALLY don't want to accidentally eat. The herbal broth was bland. Tried this place for the first time with my family. It's not bad but nothing spectacular. We had a bit of a rocky start as we were told we didn't need a reservation for Noon, but then when we got there they told us that they didn't have any seats available to accommodate our group of 6, and said we should've called 1 hour early for reservations. But, that doesn't make sense since they open at 11:30am. Probably, should think a bit more before suggesting things that contradict themselves. The base soup was not bad but not as flavorful as Little Dipper in Annandale. They were out of dumplings which was a shame because it would've been great to try them. The meats and seafood options were ok, but lacked flavor and texture since they were frozen or flash frozen. The restaurant itself was a bit stuffy & humid -- they probably could use some air ventilation fans or something above the table stations like how they do at korean bbq restaurants. On a more positive note, the waiter provided good customer service and was informative on menu. Overall, we had a decent meal and worth trying once. read more
