We came to Hot Suppa for dinner thinking they had oysters but unfortunately they didn't - the waitress was so nice about this and apologized even though she didn't need to. Despite no oysters we still enjoyed the food here! We got the fried chicken with Mac and cheese which was a very classic southern dish. The chicken was super crispy and juicy although I do wish it was seasoned a bit more. The Mac and cheese was a simple but very homey Mac and cheese! We also got the HS double double burger - this burger was huge and came with two juicy and flavorful patties. We also got a side - shrimp, andouille and corn chowder which was packed with flavor although the portion was a bit smaller. Overall the portions are HUGE and definitely super filling. Not impressed at all with this place. Service is stellar, their iced mocha was incredibly good but, that's where the good ended for me. The food was just meh. I wouldn't say it's Denny's level quality, like another reviewer said but, it really isn't up to the many other breakfasts we've had around Portland. I got the Canadian Bacon Eggs Benedict. It was nothing to write home about. Most disappointing were my hash browns - an inedible, oozing grease, grey (yep, the potatoes were grey, not white) disaster. My husband got The Holis and kept making the same remarks on quality/taste in comparison to the hype and price of the dishes. I'm so glad we came during a slow time (waited 15 minutes for a table) because if we had waited the hour or more that is their usual wait time, the $60 (with tip) we paid for two meh dishes and two coffees, would've just hurt more. read more

Ok....I saw the reviews....I heard all about the experience...however, today I found out for myself. I had breakfast with my friend who absolutely loves this place (She orders the same thing each visit, lol) so we know it must be really good! I really had a hard time deciding...don't judge me I've only been vegetarian for one day now! Maybe next year we can talk about a vegan menu. Just bear with me for right now! I finally decided on the French Toast with a side of fruit. I can't seem to come across the correct adjective to describe my thoughts when my fork touched my mouth. I felt transported....out of my body....the perfect combination of sweet, fulfilling, and absolutely delicious. I mean perfect. Amazing!!! We stopped at Hot Suppa on the way back home and wished we had found it days before! It's a very small place and we waited outside on sidewalk benches until a table opened. We came for breakfast and both ordered the French toast. It was the absolute best French toast I've ever had in my life and we've been trying to copy it at home! I have heard people speak highly of Hot Suppa for SO long and yet have never had a chance to go until last night, and it was exactly what everyone says: absolutely delicious, filling food and drink. To eat, we got the fried green tomatoes to start then I got the plant-based burger and a side of beets with manchego cheese. It was all DIVINE. The fried green tomatoes are truly unlike anything I've ever had, and the sauce is SO good. As a vegetarian, I love a good plant-based burger, but this one was cooked to perfection and truly exceeded the quality of any I've had before. And the flavor! Those beets were the freshest I've had in a loooong time, and the cheese was fluffy and melted in my mouth. My friend got the chicken and waffles and said it brought him right back to his southern roots, which is a huge compliment. To drink, I started with their Congo Square Zombie and then had the Hurricane and the Firefly 1/2 and 1/2. All of them were the perfect amount of sweet and refreshing. I can't wait to return to Hot Suppa and will DEFINITELY be back to try brunch soon. I do hear that typically there is a long wait; however, I went on a Tuesday and booked a reservation online in advance, so I had no issues there. I was visiting Portland for a day and a friend recommended this place to me. I came on a Friday at around 11AM with 2 other people. There was a long line- we were told it would be about an hour wait. Thankfully we only waited about 40 minutes. You can order coffee or a cocktail while you wait, which is nice. They only take reservations for dinner so if you want breakfast/brunch here, plan ahead of time and get here early. The inside of the restaurant doesn't have a lot of seating but it's not cramped either. I think they had more "outdoor" seating around the back of the building but it's shaded. Not too sure what that looks like because I was seated indoors. My friends and I got the corned beef hash, canadian bacon eggs benedict (see picture attached), and the barbecue pulled pork eggs benedict. I really liked how everything tasted, except the hash browns. They weren't really seasoned in any capacity so it tasted really bland. Even a generous amount of salt and pepper couldn't save it for me. Overall I would recommend this place for brunch! The portions are decent and the service was quick. read more

YUM for brunch! I always come here for brunch whenever I come to Portland. They don't take reservations for brunch and you put your name down with the hostess. There will ALWAYS be a wait on the weekends -- we did wait 2 hours. We spent that time to explore the nearby shops and get coffee. If you don't want to wait, you can always do a take-out order. They have both indoor and outdoor dining, though the outdoor is partially enclosed with tarp-like coverings. We ordered the Mother Clucker and pulled pork eggs Benedict. Had breakfast here yesterday morning. They advertise as opening at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning. We arrived about 7:52 to a short line of people and it appeared as though some had already been seated. We were advised about ten minutes after the advertised 8 a.m. opening that seatings would be staggered so the kitchen would not be overwhelmed. Receiving this information was nice, rather than just waiting outside, wondering what was going on, but it still took 10 minutes past opening to get the notice. Our server was responsive, pleasant, and efficient. Our breakfasts were very good...a mushroom scramble and the quiche. Coffee was hot and re-filled as needed. Five star food and service, but giving 4 starts for the wait in line after 8 a.m. since no one came out to explain what was going on until ten minutes later. The hostess would go out to the line and then seat people and then return inside and stand at the bar and would often talk to the bartender who did not seem overly busy. Just wondering why she wasn't outside making those in line know what was going on. Seems that some engagement with those in line would be re-assuring. We look forward to returning soon. read more

I live in a pretty foodie location where we throw around terms like farm-to-table and locavore like it's discussing the day's weather. I was told Portland has an amazing food scene and it did not disappoint. That said, there were a couple of places that stood out the most above the others; this was one of them. We came here for Sunday early breakfast before heading back to VT. We were shocked to see how many enthusiastic early morning diners there were and that there was already a 35 minute wait at 9am. When he wasn't mixing up drinks for the servers and serving food to other bar guests, he took the time for a friendly chat. As we knew we had along drive and the menu just looked too good to behave, we ordered a smoked salmon eggs benedict for me, a canadian bacon one for him, and we split a breakfast special: banana brad french toast with bananas, chocolate syrup, whipped cream and powered sugar. Um yeah, we were being piggies, but it was so worth it. I also ordered a mimosa, which came in a large pint glass generously filled with champagne and then a nice dose of OJ. I got a hot chocolate as well which came in a large handled mug with whipped cream. Both were fantastic. The eggs...now, I am fairly an aficionado of eggs benedict. So when I say these were hands down the best I have ever eaten, it's no joke. The Hollandaise was so light and airy with a touch of lemon and a teensy hint of heat that I could have ordered just that and bread to dip in. The smoked salmon was of a very high quality. Seriously good eats. The s.o. said the same. The banana bread french toast was to die for. We took half of it home to not overindulge and to allow a proper second tasting. It was pricey breakfast, but well worth it IMO. I have no issue shelling out money for excellent food and service. I'm sure we will visit his family again here, so I definitely want to come back here for lunch and dinner in the future. It's a restaurant to put on your list to visit when in town. read more

Really 2.5. In fairness, I've lived in the south and feel like restaurants in the north just can't do southern cuisine. This was no exception. We had the line to cheese for starters. It's was funny and gross. The chef needs to try pimento cheese. My son had the lobster and grits. The grits weren't as disappointing as I have had elsewhere in the north but the dish could have been better. I had the falafel Salad. The falafel needed salt and otherwise it was so so at best. The wait was close to an hour which was fine as it was Saturday brunch and they don't take reservations. We were offered to sit outside in the rain since tables were moving faster there. The hostess gave us menus and utensils wrapped in napkins. It seemed like they were understaffed but it would have been nice if someone had shown us the way to our table. Our waitress was very nice. Our trip to Maine was coming to a close and this place became our last breakfast stop before getting out of town. My time in Portland taught me that parking is a luxury, but also most places should recognize that detailed tips and instructions on where to park to frequent their business would be greatly appreciated. We did luck out with a spot on the street just outside, but we also had to feed a meter which was annoying. However, we were sat promptly and the service was fantastic. My daughter got the maple lemonade, and she didn't like it. Which is purely because she's a picky teen and would probably get chicken strips everywhere if she could. I did try it myself though and I would say you can probably save yourself the extra money and just get a regular drink. She loved her French toast though. My spouse enjoyed his biscuits and gravy and I liked the mother clucker. It was huge, but for $18, I guess any smaller and people might feel shafted. It's definitely got a hipster vibe, which probably accounts for the high prices, but the food is good and the staff is friendly.
