Hot Suppa is a classic brunch spot to round off a fun weekend. It is wonderful southern comfort food that doesn't come in outrageously large portions. The fried green tomatoes are my favorite. You will always have to wait for a spot at Hot Suppa, sometimes for longer than an hour during the summer and fall. It is on the pricier end, but you can tell that the food is very fresh and high quality so I do not mind spending a little extra. Hot Suppa is a great place to settle in for a great meal. The menu is authentic and fun. Good contemporary southern cuisine and great service. Staff is helpful and friendly. Setting is cozy and intimate. All in all a great place to have dinner. That said, the last time I visited the weather was still winter and the restaurant was incredibly cold. We actually had to eat with our coats on. Not sure how to fix that, but we soldiered through on the strength of the food. Definitely check out Hot Suppa. It's worth visiting. read more

I love this place. It is INCREDIBLY hard to get in for breakfast/brunch (because it's so good) but I think the dinner there is underrated. If you can't get in for breakfast, it's worth checking out at night when there is less of a wait. In Summer they have a little outside courtyard too. read more

For a Southern Soul Food spot far away from the South, this place is pretty good. While visiting Portland with my wife and 4-month-old son, we picked this placed based on reviews and were quite impressed. We were able to get in quickly and the service was excellent. We ordered several things to share. We got a few oysters (they were only $1.50 each so why not), the poutine, the catfish tacos, shrimp and grits, and the Fried Chicken with Mac and Cheese. The Oysters were really good! They tasted fresh and the housemade cocktail sauce was absolutely delicious. And since my wife does not like oysters, I got these all to myself :):):) The Catfish Tacos were amazing. Having never eaten catfish before I really don't know what it should taste like, but if it tastes like that I WANT MOOOOOOREE!!! The poutine was a little disappointing to me. Having grown up in Canada and being a little bit of a food snob, I may be being a little bit harsh, but poutine is near and dear to my heart and I feel like I have to defend it. But then, I did order a Canadian classic at a southern soul food place so what can I expect. I just felt like the gravy needed more seasoning, so still not a bad choice. The shrimp and grits were good, but they were not what I was expecting. The sauce/gravy that was on the shrimp tasted quite tomatoey, which was strange to me. It was seasoned kinda like a tomato vegetable soup, but again, since I have never had shrimp and grits before I can't be super harsh on this. The shrimp was cooked very well and still tasted great! The Mac and Cheese was the star of the night. It was delicious! (For the one bite I got to taste). I had ordered my piece of fried chicken in the Nashville Hot seasoning, and while it tasted super good and I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was so hot that I could not taste anything else. I would absolutely order the Hot chicken again, but would wait until the end of the meal to eat it so I got to enjoy everything else. My boyfriend and I came here last fall for brunch on a recommendation from a foodie friend. There was - as expected - a wait for Sunday brunch, but nothing too brutal. He got the corned beef hash, which was definitely good, but I got the Eggs Benedict with fried green tomatoes instead of Canadian bacon and holy mother of all things good and tasty, that plate of food was off-the-charts. Place is amazing! First food stop on a trip to Portland with friends and we were not disappointed. I ordered a special which was a duck burger with chipotle, goat cheese, and apple slaw. DELICIOUS. You're able to choose your side and I ordered the beets with horseradish sauce. My boyfriend ordered the Poor Boy with fried oyster and shrimp and fries - delicious. Our other friends ordered a regular burger and fries as well as the pulled pork Mac n cheese. Pulled pork Mac n cheese was amazing but the fried onions on top were a little too spicy for my weak tastebuds. Also shared a 1/2 dozen oysters which were incredible - the best I ever had in my life I would say. I know - BOLD statement. Casual place - no need to dress up. We sat in a booth and on a Thursday night at about 7 we had no problem finding a table. We were able to walk down to Old Port from here which was great as we wanted to explore. I am an outlier here. I see the many 4 and 5 star reviews, but I just didn't feel the same way about this place. There were two of us and we tried the French-style omelette with spinach, garlic and Pineland Farms cheddar cheese, and we also tried the red & green burrito. Both were just alright. The omelette was warm when it arrived, like maybe it had been set aside waiting while they finished making the burrito. Nothing terrible. All I had to do was ask for a warm up. The cheese in the omelette was very good though. This dish came with a choice of grits, but I found them to be too buttery tasting and I couldn't take more than a couple of bites. Nothing remarkable about the flavor of the burrito. The coffee was on the weak side and a little bitter. The service was great however, and it was a nice spot with an interesting interior. Went here for breakfast today and could not believe this place was rated so high. We waited 35 minutes for a table at the bar after asking the hostess the eta of our name to be called.. The is food wonderful at Hot Suppa if you can ever manage to get seated to eat it. On a recent visit, we had a party of 4 and we were told about 45 min. The hostess was actually keeping a hand written list, and it appeared that she had one list for two tops, and one list for four tops. How on earth can you keep parties in order keeping two separate lists?!? Long story short, we waited for 90 min, and if that wasn't bad enough, there were literally three tables empty on the patio when we were handed menus and told to go back and seat ourselves. With all the wait management apps out there today, there is really no need for this kind of experience. Replace your hostess and start thinking about making the wait and line management more transparent to your customers with an app. No restaurant's food is worth that kind of experience. read more

I don't care how good the food is, when your customer service is not good, you're just an "ok" restaurant. I don't even want to fix my mouth to say the reason I believe the hostess was being an ass and seating people who arrived after us (I was listening and they walked up to ask for a table, were told the wait time and still somehow got seated before we did). Then, she lied and told me they had made reservations, which I called and was told we could not do. After the 3rd time, I walked up, annoyed of course, and miraculously "someone just cancelled and she was able to seat us right away". What makes this even worse, the service inside wasn't so bad, but when you start off being treated this way, it ruins the experience for you. So shame on that rude little girl with the pigtails, that wasn't a very good hostess, who ironically enough sat next to a sign that said "Be nice or leave". Went here recently on a weekday and the staff was very welcoming even though we came right before they were supposed to close. The COVID precautions are great and we felt safe being there. And the food...well the food was awesome! I had a basic scrambled egg dish that was creamy and rich and might have been the best scrambled eggs I've ever had. I've heard this place is known for brunch (and very long waits during brunch) so I'm here to tell you if that you hate long brunch lines when you're hungover and hangry, you can skip brunch here and experience the magic at dinner. My boyfriend and I arrived on a Friday night at around and scored the last empty table with no wait. Our waitress was delightful and super attentive. My 'new fashion' cocktail was crafted expertly, and my boyfriend loved his milk stout. Even with everything else being perfect, the real star of the show was the food. We split catfish tacos, fried green tomato salad (with the world's greatest dressing), and fried chicken with mac n cheese. The fried chicken was cooked with sweet tea and was pure crack. My husband and I stumbled on this restaurant on our way home from our mini honeymoon in Portland - it was just around the block from our air bnb. Man did we luck out! We waited about 20 minutes which was no problem at all. We ended up ordering the Maine maple sweet tea to start - lord was it good. Hot Suppa is one of those places where you love the food and the people, but you kinda hate the space. (This is a warning for claustrophobic/high anxiety people especially.) I've been to Hot Suppa five times so far, and I've left stuffed and singing praise for their food and staff every time. (My husband's only complaint is that the fries aren't included with the burgers anymore. But he ordered extra fries anyway cuz when he eats, he EATS.) We love our usual burgers (w/ caramelized onions please) and fries (the BBQ dipping sauce is AMAZING), we love the salads and desserts, and we love trying the new stuff up on the black board. We're never bored, and we've pretty much never gone home hungry. We do, unfortunately, end up leaving faster than we like. The problem is the space. I'm a big guy with a lot of shoulder, and my husband is all legs. Neither of us can fit in the booths real well, and even when we manage to squish ourselves in there, there's usually some pretty large groups of people crowded in on all sides. It's hot, loud, and kinda unpleasant. It doesn't really inspire us to relax and enjoy our food for as long as we typically do. (And we aren't even slow eaters.) Normally I would shrug it off and go for it anyway, cuz the food is 100% worth the crowd and the heat. But last time we went there, we brought one of our kids and she damn well nearly had a panic attack from the yelling (some drunk guys in the booth behind us got a little too riled up) and the heat alone. We had to leave. I'm kinda sad to say but we haven't been back since. Hot Suppa is NOT a bad place, and we love the food, but we keep finding ourselves going to less crowded/overheated places so we can be comfortable. If you're good with that kinda environment, and you're not too big for the booths I say go for it. You'll love their food and the staff. But if you got any kind of anxiety or problems with heat and noise, I gotta suggest you try somewhere else, sorry guys. read more

So I heard about the epic waits, so hubby and I headed out early to get there by 7:15 on a Saturday! Well worth it! No wait...yep I said it, NO WAIT! I had the red and green burrito and it was delicious. I added sausage to it but realized after taking a few awesome bites that the pulled pork would have been glorious! My only complaint was the coffee was way too strong for me. If that's the worst that happens I'm all set. Hubby went Southern style with biscuits gravy and of course grits! He thought it was good and was thrilled to find a place that does grits well. If we are again early and we can get there early we will go again for sure! read more

It's been a week since we dined at Hot Suppa for the first time. I am still reminiscing about our breakfast there. My wife ordered the pecan waffle and a separate waffle with the blueberry compote. Both were outstanding! I ordered the Mother Clucker somewhat on a whim and ...wow. I tried to think back on all of the spectacular breakfasts I had, while ignoring the recency bias - this one takes the cake. I can't imagine a better breakfast, if I am being honest with you.
