A fun dining experience with my teen son overall. Walked in right around opening and ended up waiting a few minutes before they were ready to seat us. There were about two dozen tables of four set up around the restaurant and all the self serve bar options were along the back wall. It's not a huge restaurant and I didn't notice much in terms of decor so it's really all about the food. We opted for just the grill since that is how we prefer to cook our meats. We tried most of the different beef selections and it was surprising how chewy and tough some of the "wagyu" cuts were so I question some of the beef grading. The brisket and short ribs were our favorite. I got a few veggies from the bar area to grill, whereas my son just wanted to focus on the meats. Drinks were self service from the fridge and I was pleased they offered Coke Zero. You already had me You get your own individual hot pot burner, AND you can do a 2-option soup base. So basically everyone at the table can do their own thing without fighting over which broth to get or share. The meat quality is solid for both the shabu shabu and BBQ, and there's a ton of options for meats, veggies, sides, etc. Definitely plenty to keep you busy until you're questioning your life choices after plate #7 and above. Let's talk about the grill or whatever it is that they use here. I don't know what they put in this thing, but THIS GRILL IS A BEAST. I've been to a lot of AYCE KBBQ spots and I've never had a grill this powerful. It cooks everything SO FAST, it even gives the steaks that legit sear/crust that every steak connoisseur seeks for. And if you're the type of person who loves their pork belly and beef belly CRISPY AF... you're going to LOVE this grill. You get that nice crispy outside without sitting there waiting a million years for your meat to cook. Even better, the grill doesn't seem to burn up easily, so we barely needed to change it. Huge win. Nothing worse than getting into the zone and then having to stop because your grill looks like it survived a house fire and then having to pause and wait a few minutes to let it heat up again. Yep, throwing the raw meats on the cold grill and not seeing it sizzle is criminal! Service was also really good. Everyone was super friendly, attentive, and actually checking in on us throughout the meal. Had shabu and grill here and it was really good! You can choose either shabu or grill as your base, and there's also an upgraded option to enjoy both at the same time. The meats were all great quality, and having both options in one meal makes it a lot more fun. Just keep in mind that everyone in your party has to choose the same option, especially if people in your group want different things. They're also offering a grand opening discount right now, so it's the perfect time to try the upgraded option. We did both grill n shabu! Cubed steak and pork jowls were soooooo good! Oh also they use charcoal on the grill it seems! The meat grills so good on it. Veggie and sauce station could be organized a little better, but they have everything you need and you can still find everything pretty easily. There was a good variety of vegetables, sauces, and other items to choose from, so it was easy to customize the meal to your liking. The place is still pretty new, and it doesn't seem like they have a big brand name driving the marketing yet, especially compared with places like Haidilao or wagyu Factory. It wasn't too busy when we went, but you can tell it's good people running a good business. Hopefully they can build some good word of mouth, because the food and overall experience are definitely worth talking about. Found this little hole-in-the-wall shabu and BBQ spot close to home, and what a great surprise! We stopped by for a random Monday dinner out of curiosity and were genuinely impressed by the quality of the meat for both the grill and shabu. We got the AYCE option for both shabu and grill and tried four different broths. All of them were delicious, and the dipping sauce combinations they suggested were excellent. The grill is KBBQ-style, and the quality of the wagyu especially blew us away. Service was also very friendly and pleasant throughout the meal. This place is super brand new. My cousin found it on Yelp and wanted to try it. Service - excellent but because this place had just opened it was not busy at all and besides us there was only one other table. Meats - the meat quality is very good especially the Australian Wagyu. Keep in mind it is limited to one per person. Shabu - it's a split pot so you get two broths and it is individual pots. My sister recommends mixing the tonkotsu with the Mala. Hot Foods - their chicken is very crispy. I recommend the Honey Sriracha wings! Dessert- they have taro balls and sesame balls and both were very good. Usually they are soggy at other AYCE places so I was pleasantly surprised. They also have ice cream that you can order from the tablet so that's a win. Not sure if the flavors change but they had pistachio, vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry cheesecake. Drinks - self-serve unlimited soda cans are offered and kept in a fridge The menu was a bit confusing to read. They might want to update their menus or add this info somewhere to avoid questions. --It says they have lunch and dinner prices but it doesn't tell you what the lunch hours are. --If you want to do both the shabu and the grill then it's $49.99 but no where on the menu does it say that. Highly recommend! We were impressed by the quality of every protein we tried--especially, the meat and snakehead fish were fresh and high quality. The limited Australian beef options are definitely one of the best meats we have tried. One feature we really loved is that everyone has their own personal pot and can choose two different broth options, making the experience more personalized and enjoyable. We were excited to try Hotaru Shabu and Grill, especially because it's one of the few places in the Irvine-Tustin area offering both shabu-shabu and Korean BBQ! The meat was fresh, tender, and very good quality, with a wonderful variety to choose from. We also loved the unlimited drinks. We went during their soft opening with a 20% discount and were excited to try this place because of all of the good reviews. It's $50 if you want to do both shabu and grill. In my opinion, it's not worth the price, there are other restaurants in OC that have higher quality shabu/bbq for way cheaper. Honestly, the food was mediocre at best. They had a a variety of meats to select from but the cuts had a lot of fat and pieces that were too chewy/hard. We tried three different soup bases: mala, sukiyaki, and tonkotsu. They were all average. They did have an okay amount of vegetables and seafood to choose from. (Tbh if this review was solely based on the food I would give it a 1- I was disappointed because all of the high reviews). Also, they do have a fridge with soda cans you can grab from but the water had a weird taste and there was no ice. The calpico was also room temperature. They do have ice cream for dessert which was nice. The service did make up for the low quality of food. The servers were all nice and checked in on us and the meats came out pretty quickly. The restaurant was pretty clean and the grill was nice. Overall, if you decide to go I'd recommend sticking to only shabu or bbq. Don't think it's worth $50 to do both. read more

There's banchan, there's veggies, there's seafood, there's sauces, there was also unlimited sodas in the fridge. The place gets a lot of smoke from the grill and I think the vent isn't very strong so it doesn't clear the smoke. The air conditioner blows air so hard that it might actually disperse the smoke rather than effectively vacuum it up. The smoke literally gets in the eyes.
