It is the old hotel. It needs to be updated. Rooms are small but clean. Checking in was quick. Numerous elevators for different towers in the building. I would recommend it, just not highly recommend it. read more

This is a reasonably well kept up hotel, but circa 1980's. A lot of the more recent review photos are very accurate so I won't say anything there. Wifi in my room on the 10th floor was excellent, and I could Skype with the family back home in high quality. Room was very clean, but as the photos suggest, a bit dated. The rooms themselves are quite small. I stayed in a standard king size room. The bathroom was incredibly cramped. Views were pretty darn good, I was facing out over the ocean, and got a couple of nice sunsets. The room was very quiet, and I appreciate having a window that will actually open because like a cool room. The TV was small, and the set top box was horrible to operate. That being said, no worse than any other hotel that has a STB paired to a TV with an all-in-one remote control. King sized bed was actually comfy. Pillows were terrible collapsing fluff bags. Coffee came in the form of Keurig cups. Not terrible coffee, but not great either. Parking was across the street, and felt a bit sketchy, but nothing happened to my rental in two nights. The front desk staff at check in were incredibly friendly, however when I came back in several hours later to get my car park ticket sorted out, some young man who worked there was deep in personal conversation, flirting with the front desk girl. I get it, the girl was cute, but come on dude, rent a clue about customer service. Plus, the girl could not have given you more subtle hints about how you should have pushed off! Would I stay here again? No, I'd probably try the Sheraton up the road. This should be your measure, that I would come back a second time without even considering the competition. Overpriced for what it is. Stuck my head into Fletchers for dinner, but it looked like the geriatric ward so I went down the street. And I'm by no means a spring chicken! read more

We were at this hotel in June 2016, wonderful clean rooms and hotel. The best in Anchorage. We were here 25 years ago, it was great then, even better now. And the food at Fletchers (restaurant) was the best that we had in the two weeks we spent in Alaska. And when you order a pint of draft beer, you actually get a pink, not just 14 ounces like in California. read more

Everything about our recent stay was beyond expectations. We arrived at 7.30 am after an all night flight and expected to be allowed to leave our luggage and go to breakfast. Instead we were given a suite immediately. Check out was the same curtesy. We had a late flight and a 2 pm checkout was no problem. The restaurants were superb and the top floor view from Crows Nest is the best in anchorage. The gym is like a London gentle mans club with leather club chairs, chesterfield sofa and TV in the entry area. It's well worth the $5 to join for temporary membership read more

We stayed one night at the end of our Alaskan vacation, and here are the pros and cons: Pros - The hotel is beautiful with multiple towers (3, I think?), a couple of art galleries, restaurants, bar, etc. - We got upgraded to a room on the Captain's Deck on the 17th floor, which included access to the lounge. That included free coffee, water, sodas, juice, etc. and also hosted an evening appetizer event. - It's within walking distance of just about anything you want to do in downtown Anchorage. It was an easy walk to Snow City Cafe for breakfast, breweries, gift shops, and coffee shops. - They provided shampoo, conditioner, lotion, bar soap, a shower cap, robes, and slippers, along with a Keurig in the room. - There were clocks on both nightstands!! This seems minor until the 37th time your spouse asks what time it is in the middle of the night. Also, both clocks had charging stations, so we didn't have to hunt for plug-ins. - The lobby has tons of plug-ins for you to sit and charge your phone. - Our room had a view of the city with the mountains behind it, and my in-laws had a great view of the water. - We didn't have a car, so I can't speak to parking, but the valet was super helpful in getting us a taxi, and the entrance was covered, which was nice since it rained most of the time we were there. Cons - Although we got upgraded, our room was still tiny. Two people couldn't walk between the end of the bed and the dresser where the TV was. - We stayed in early June, and the hotel was PACKED with cruise groups. I'm guessing this is to be expected, but it was a sea of blue-hairs all wearing the same cruise jackets. LOL That's cool if it's your thing, but we were overwhelmed in the lobby. - We left our bags with the concierge while we walked around town, and it took an act of God to get them back. The concierge wasn't at the stand when we returned, and when she finally got back, it took forevvvver to get them from storage. It sounded like all the tour people had stored theirs, too, so the bellhops are pretty darn busy. read more

I am sure I haven't had the chance to really enjoy all the Cpt. had to offer but the thing I really remember the most was that they had this shop that had an electronic clock that would display the number of day light hours they were experiencing that day. The first day there - 22:12:45 in counting....OMG. Otherwise the restaurant they had there was nothing special and yes when I was there it was kind of old school but it was a luxurious feel that I really enjoyed. BTW I also got to watch Hot Fuz...yeah I know....but I couldn't help myself. I was curious. The location was not necessarily in the center of everything but it gave me the chance to walk the area a little and really take in the local surroundings. The entire area had that kind of small town homey feeling....kind of something I saw in that sitcom....Northern Exposure....do you remember that show or did I just inadvertantly tell you how old I was??? ;D read more

Hotel badly in need of an update. Wallpaper peeling, showers take forever to heat up (and never get hot), small TVs and room service food that I would expect from a diner. Staff is very nice however. Quiet rooms. Fast elevators. Not enough to return. Too bad as it is an awesome location. read more

wow, what a huge disappointment. supposedly this is the best hotel in anchorage. i can't believe that's true...this hotel is nothing special AT ALL, much less a luxury hotel. the problems i had included: rude front desk check-in, dirty towels strewn across the bathroom when i checked in (how did housekeeping miss this??), tiny tv from the 80s with non-functional remote, no free coffee/coffee machine in the room, room not cleaned one day (with someone showing up at 10 pm to ask if i needed it cleaned??), general complete lack of style in the room/furnishings...ok, i'm in a bad mood just writing that. the common areas of the hotel are nothing special either, much less "mystical." there is absolutely no reason to pay a lot of money to stay here...maybe the shitty service i received was an anomaly, but even that aside this place is average at best. on the plus side, the crow's nest (restaurant at top of hotel) is incredible (albeit expensive). if anything, i'd recommend eating there if you can't resist having some type of captain cook experience. read more

PROS: - Military room rates $99 - Close to everything downtown - Ceiling fan; for some reason these are becoming increasingly difficult to find in hotel rooms - Awesome staff at the front desk, Fletcher's, Crow's Nest, and Whale's Tale - Indoor pool CONS: - Parking but all parking downtown Anchorage is a pain in the butt; parking enforcement downtown is run with ruthless efficiency - No airport shuttle; ~$20 each way I prefer this Hotel over any others in Anchorage. read more

The problem with this hotel is the fact that the air unit in your room is not able to make cold or even neutral temperature air so you are stuck with a stuffy room. In the cooler months, you can open the window, but the road traffic is pretty loud. In the summer, forget it, you will be hot guaranteed. The computer room has very fast internet and it is free. The Captain Cook has banquet rooms and they do small type conventions. Location is not bad, two minutes to Humpy's and a 5 minute walk to the mall. The water view rooms have quite a vista. The restaurant bars are both very nice with great ambiance. The coffee shop is currently being remodeled so breakfast is served on the top floor at the crows nest. Stay away from the fish tacos with slaw because the slaw is sugar sweet and goopy. Instead, go to Fletcher's on the first floor. It has a great bar with nice beers on tap and yummy Italian fare. I would agree that the food is overpriced. But if it's cold outside, what ya gonna do?! read more

For Alaska, this hotel is great. The Hotel Captain Cook is a nice hotel centrally located in downtown Anchorage. It is convenient to the Anchorage Museum, the weekend market, the Ulu Factory, the rail station and much more. The rooms are modestly sized in comparison to a room at a modern Marriott. The beds are very cozy with superior linens. The hotel does not have air-conditioning in the rooms, which is a real drag on an unseasonably warm Anchorage day. The staff at the hotel is very friendly and clearly wants you to leave their hotel with a positive experience. I would stay at this hotel again. If the rooms were larger and were air conditioned, this property could be mistaken for a Marriott. read more

It's hands down the best accommodations in Anchorage if not the state!

Okay, so I consider this hotel one of the best Anchorage and would easily give it five stars based on my two stays there (both during the pandemic). The rooms are very clean, the customer service phenomenal, and the restaurants are all fantastic. The Captain's Deck rooms I stayed in had lovely views, and all of downtown is easily accessible. Valet is typically very professional and fast, but I have deducted one star due to an experience I had this morning. While waiting for valet, as my car was being driven into the roundabout, I saw that the gentleman delivering it was wearing a face mask. As he pulled up to me, I watched him PULL HIS MASK DOWN under his chin and then SNEEZE into my vehicle with all the windows up, not covering his face at all with a hand or elbow or anything. Then when he was finished aerosaling his spittle all over the interior of my vehicle, he put the mask back over his mouth and exited the car like nothing happened. I get it, sneezes happen and I'm not trying to make a big deal out of it, but at a time when COVID is spiking this is completely unsafe and gross and unprofessional in general. So, this is a wonderful hotel overall, but I would like to simply suggest to management that they discuss this incident with their valet staff to ensure they are operating as safely as possible given the current situation. read more

Overall, I would give this hotel a 3.5 to 4. Lovely hotel. Best restaurants! Great shops. It has a lot to offer so I recommend it. My only major disappointment was it currently doesn't have air conditioning. For most people that is not an issue. I had to open window to chill room and as a result listened to construction all night. And rooms are a bit small. But service is really good so if I return to Anchorage I will stay there. read more

I stayed here for a week while on business and thought the place was alright. I didn't eat at the hotel, but the sheer size of the place (not to mention the numerous merchants and things to do inside) made me feel a little bit like being on a cruise ship. Parking is self-park in a garage across the street, which can be a little odd if you're walking alone by yourself at night, but it's in-and-out privileges which is a plus. It's located within walking distance of a real nice bayside trail, and lots of bars and restaurants. The rooms were only ok, but they had free wifi which allowed me to facetime with my husband while I was gone (yay). The windows open a bit at the bottom, which was awesome because surprisingly I got a bit warm and cracking open the window sure does cool things down fast! I would stay here again for sure, because it's in a great location, the staff was SUPER friendly, and the rooms were decent. read more

Nice efficient hotel. It has a retro feel though, being mustard brown color. The paintings of Captain James Cook are quite educational. There is the best Patagonia - outdoor sports store in the lobby! Coffee shop is pretty basic. the shopping there is pretty good. Great location. read more

Had three great nights. Checked out for state park one night came back tonight had a horrible experience. They gave us a room they said was double - it was a king. Our granddaughter was with us so that wasn't going to work. We came back to front still stating it was a double...finally the admitted it was a king a offered us a row away because there was not another room of the captains floor. I say they gave our room away. Beware if you have prepaid and arrive late you may get stuck. read more

I loved the Hotel Captain Cook. It is like a time capsule going back to an era long ago. It is also super well located in the middle of downtown. The only big issue is that they charge what I thought was a lot of money for parking. It was $36 a day to park at the hotel. The only alternative is parking on the street. If you do park on the street you HAVE to move your car every 2 hours because you can not feed meters and the meters only allow up to 2 hours. It was a frustrating experience. Then when I missed, that despite free parking on the weekends you still have to move your car every 2 hours and I got a $20 ticket. Super surprising and frustrating and expensive. read more

Not a very good hotel for the price. Everything is outdated. The bathrooms have no vent. The night staff is rude. The restaurants serve good food. So my advice is to stay at the Hilton and walk over to the Captain Cook for dinner. read more

Nicer on the inside than you would guess from the outside. Beds are comfy but it is an aged hotel having been around for 59 years.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The valet and door staff were excellent and Fletchers was a terrific place to eat. The location in downtown is very centrally located and has easy walking access to everything. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because the bed was not that good and the rooms really need to be refurbished. However, I do plan on staying here again. read more

Since this was our first trip, we decided to get the suite. This hotel is considered "luxury" but compared to other hotels, ok I can see that...it's large hotel in the area, couple of restaurants on the ground level with plenty of stores too. The suite had 2 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a parlor. The parlor had a bar area too, each room had a refrigerator and microwave. My refrigerator wasn't working but there were 2 others to choose from! There were robes and slippers, plenty of counter space in my king bed room. Rooms had great views of the city and water...slept very well and had plenty of space in my room. The other room with the 2 double beds was little tighter but we spread out in the parlor if we needed more room. The parlor's heating wasn't working right so it was 75 where the rooms were little more comfortable and so yes I can say the heat worked!. We were also there "off season" so prices were probably not as bad as in the summer or later in the week when the dog sled racing started. So we were just under the exec lounge which we went to get complimentary breakfast and 5pm "happy hour". Oh and these were not the typical free breakfast or "happy hours" in other hotels. Breakfast items included the standards eggs, sausage, bacon oatmeals, cereals etc but also had smoked salmon, diced peppers, onions and little fruit bowls, pastries and it was all so tasty, then in the evening, there were more than just ordinary appetizers, there were also salmon, also sushi....different types of desserts, pastas, some different mixed salads, cheese and crackers, wine and beer... fried shrimp...it was like wow! we didn't have to go out for dinner. the staff were all friendly and helpful. There were many stores around the lobby area that had little trinkets, clothes etc. I only browsed, didn't buy anything. The hotel is not far from the train station, less than 5 min drive. About 10 from the airport, no shuttle though. Hotel is downtown so walkable to the general downtown area where all the souvenir stores are and other restaurants. there is one mall about 10 mins away by feet. The hotel has a log cabin feel for me. They maintain it well. I don't consider it outdated but just the style. I look at the bathrooms and can determine how well it is maintained or not. bathrooms tell all. =) The gym and spa is downstairs - level under the lobby and yes there is a men and women gym. We took a yoga class one night and had to walk around the employee area to get to the room - just odd set up but still nice we were able to take the class free as we were guests of the hotel. We were enjoyed our stay! I can only imagine how pretty and crowded it is in the summer when the cruiselines come by so were glad to visit it in the winter. read more

One star for keeping up an attractive mid century lobby and another for having polite doormen and room cleaning staff -- but -- The hotel does not provide reliable internet to guests, no matter the reassurances from the front desk. I was told by both the hotel engineer and the concierge to go to the lobby and use the internet -- I felt like I was back in 1999. We booked a room with two queen beds and were put in a king and given a roll away. Three days in a row we were told that there were no double queen rooms available, despite our daily requests for a room change. Overall the staff has been friendly but unable to solve two basic problems. I expect more from a hotel that touts itself as a high end establishment. read more

Easter weekend...Friday through Monday...comfy bed....horrible housekeeping....or more clearly stated...NO housekeeping! We asked, we hung the "please clean this room early" sign...still NO housekeeping...AT ALL...the entire time we were there. When we told the manager, his answer was "Are you sure they didn't clean your room?" WHAT?!! Are we sure they left the towels on the floor, dirty coffee cups on the bathroom counter, the coffee suppy basket empty, bed unmade, ??? Are we SURE?!! We said yes we were sure. Their reply..."Sorry"! Any recompence? Any apologies? Any offer of discounts of any kind to raise the level of customer service??? Nope. Simply "Here's your bill. Will that be cash or credit?". Lastly, we tried breakfast in the restaurant our last morning there. YUK!! Asked for a "medium" steak...cut into it, blood ran everywhere. So I asked for a refire. They overcooked it to overly well done. Again..no discount except for "we won't charge you for your coffee". Suffice to say--We will NOT be back! read more

I cannot say enough bad things about this hotel. We stayed here for a week and were not impressed by anything about the hotel. We had some kind of room construction going on right above us throughout our days at the hotel but when they that began at 6am one morning we were obviously upset!! When we spoke to the front desk about it they denied any knowledge of it but we never heard anything again. When we asked for some extra towels and toilet paper to be brought to the room it took over an hour before someone came. The worst happened when we left the hotel though. In our rush to make an early morning flight we happened to leave our baby monitor in the room. Totally our fault, of course! We called the lost and found department to have them send it back to us, gave them our credit card for the shipping cost and waited... and waited... and waited. After ten days we called again. She told us that her note to mail it back had gotten misplaced and they were going to send it out in three days!! No offer to pay shipping costs, expedite the monitor we had been waiting for or even a proper apology! This is a big hotel and the fact of the matter is that they just don't care about individual guests and their experiences. read more

We stayed at the Captain Cook Hotel as part of our pre-cruise package. Totally satisfied wth the accommodations. The bell hop was very helpful, carting all of our luggage to our room and offering suggestions on dining for the evening meal. We told him we were exhausted from our multiple plane change trip from Arizona to Anchorage, Alaska. He recommended the room service, and suggested items from the menu. We followed his suggestions and were pleasantly surprised with the meal. After a great sleep, we headed out on our train ride to Seward to board our cruise ship, leaving behind good memories of the Captain a Cook Hotel. read more

Everything about this hotel is wonderful. The rooms are great and very clean. You can get 2 twins or 2 doubles or king,plus suites which i have never stayed in. But, i hear they are great. It is right in the middle of town and 1 block long so you will never get lost when you are out and about trying to find your way back. The art work through out is amazing. Christmas time is a winter wonderland there with a gingerbread village made from scratch by their Pastry chef. They decorate every area and it smells like Chocolate and ginger all over the first floor. Everything you could ever want is right in the hotel. But, with all the great things so see in the area and no sales tax you have to get out and about. There are 6 or 7 restaurants in side the hotel and surrounded by them on the outside. A fantastic workout facility.Swimming pool(indoors) sauna, steam room. It is heaven every time i go there i never want to leave. This is the only place to stay in Anchorage. Because, it is the best! Oh did i mention the views, The cook inlet on one side, and majestic mountains covered in snow on the other. Beautiful! read more

My husband went out to smoke, the guys at the door ask to see his key, he showed it to them. They asked him more questions, asked what room he was in and he went to the front desk with them and his name was on our room number. He asked for their names and they refused to give their names to him. Even he had his key, ID and confirmed with the front desk that he's a guest there, they had to escort him to our room and see if his key would work They're just racist. The man at the front desk that checked me said that they shouldn't have done this to him either. read more

I was completely satisfied with the Capt Cook Hotel. None of the criticisms of the other reviews was evident. Perhaps the Yelp feedback has worked to improve the place. Although it is worth noting that none of the hotels we stayed in this far North had air conditioning. While this is apparently not a problem most of the year there are those days. This is a portion of another reviewers insight into the Captain Cook with which I did agree. "We stayed here for the first night of the land portion our princess cruise trip. The hotel is right downtown in Anchorage. The staff at check in was good. They gave us good information about leaving the next day and what we would need as far as luggage..... The rooms were average size. The bed was outstanding. The linens were clean and soft. The cover was just the right weight. The shower was better than most you find in a hotel. In the short time that I spent in the Captain Cook's lobby level, a couple of obviously intoxicated homeless folks came in and started aggressively panhandling for change. While I know that there is a problem with homelessness in Anchorage and that some of those unfortunate folks have troublesome relationships with alcohol, the patrons of this fine establishment deserve better. There needs to be a more vigilant monitoring of this area by hotel staff, including security, to see that the panhandlers stick to the sidewalks or other places where they are allowed to congregate and solicit. read more

BED BUGS!!!!! Two nights ago, I woke up to go to the bathroom and saw black bugs crawling on the headboard & pillows. I was totally freaked out! I called the front desk; they sent a "technician" who said, "Let's follow protocol". He then told me to take off my clothes so they could be washed and called down for another room. I cannot express how'd difficult this was for a woman traveling alone at 4 am. The new room was not an upgrade; when I went to take a shower, brown rusty water came out of the pipes. Unfortunately, my company had already paid for the room and I didn't have the wherewithal to make another reservation. The manager called the next day, indicating he would wash my clothes and offering breakfast...and that was it. They are not a national chain, who knows when I will be back in Anchorage, and even if I am, I seriously will not stay there. Now, I have red bites on both arms and I'm just pissed off. Everyone kept telling me this was the best hotel in Anchorage, and if so, Airbnb is the answer. Never again! read more

My spouse and I have been here for almost a week now. We are well traveled and give this place 5 stars. Service is excellent. Room service is fast. All the staff are friendly and helpful. Our room is very clean. The beds are just heaven! Security was very helpful when I needed them for a rather embarrassing self inflicted issue that I won't get into on yelp. I love Fletcher's restaurant. Again, super friendly staff. We could not be more pleased with this place. It made a great week. Location is excellent. We will be back that's for sure. I used the gym. Nice and well appointed. The shoe thing at the gym is kind of strange but I've seen that before. The shower has the highest water pressure I've ever encountered. It's a blast. Another thing I like is the elevators are fast. The not so good things. Wi-fi doesn't work in our room. I believe it works well in the lobby areas and might work well in other rooms but that's just a guess. I wish they had a thin throw blanket in the room as I get hot under the thick comforter. Hint for people with cars. Street parking is free 6 PM till 9 AM. We stayed a week and fed the meter a few times but didn't pay for overnight parking. That's all I've got to say. Enjoy! read more
