I think to give a generous review of the Captain Cook, you have to put it in context. Is this an outstanding hotel? No. But is it the nicest place in Anchorage? Probably. That's why I'd recommend it to anyone spending some time in Anchorage, at any season. The good stuff: the location, the lobby, restaurants and bars. The athletic club is functional and quaint (gender-separate gyms!) Staff was always around and helpful. The bad stuff: the Wi-Fi is terrible. The rooms are rough. The hot water is unreliable (took two COLD showers). With limited resources, I think Captain Cook did it right. This is a hotel focusing on what goes on outside of your room. It's beautiful downstairs. Upstairs is another story. But if you're coming to Alaska just to stay in your room, what are you doing?? read more

We like the walking distance convenience of this hotel to the Anchorage Performing Arts Center. We were sent to Captain Cook Hotel through our cruise company. Everything that could go wrong did! First they lost our luggage! If we hadn't had AirTags we would probably still be trying to find it! The desk that took care of cruise patrons was so disorganized they had no idea what to do about Anything!! Then we got very ill and my husband went to the front desk to request a late check out since our flight was after midnight. He paid the $250 extra only to have a very nasty young woman call our room around 11:30 am telling us we were supposed to "vacate" the room immediately as we were supposed to have left at 11:00am! I explained that we were sick And had Paid for an extra few hours already. She barely backed down, got huffy and Finally said, "Oh, I see you're a late check-out." No apology, nothing! Think before you book this place! The employees all look like they have somewhere else to be and look down their noses at us "tourists". Guess who pays your wages??? Tourists! The arrival and checkin - - - Once we navigated the one way streets and found the front interest everything was smooth sailing. The valet was professional and courteous (though they did not offer to help unload luggage). The front desk staff were amazingly friendly and very helpful. There was a huge event going on in the ballroom making it hard to navigate to our room so the front desk staff quickly and efficiently switched our rooms. THE ROOM - - - We received a corner room which was nice because it included two huge windows. There was plenty of open space and a ledge beneath each window. I was able to prop my feet up, enjoy a cup of coffee, and enjoy views of mountains and the inlet. The bed was very comfortable and I slept solid both nights. The coffee station provided decaf, regular, and teas. The coffee was quite tasty. I had never seen the brand before, but it was good. I appreciated the real mugs! The bathroom was tiny, but the only blemish in an otherwise wonderful room. The Amenities - - - The pool, spa and health centers were top notch. It's a little confusing finding your way from Tower 2. You have to go down to the lobby, walk to the whales tale, take the stairs down and make an immediate left. But the facilities were great. Full gym, pool with lanes for lap swimming, and a hot tub. There were chairs for lounging and a gentleman to guide you through the whole facility. Four restaurants on site made dining easy. read more

Wow! So impressed. We're used to staying at high end hotels, but Anchorage doesn't have any.. but this place is as close as you'll get! Everything about Hotel Captain Cook is awesome, beyond surprised. First off, the service... consistent and amazing literally across every touch point! I even dropped earring backs into the sink a 10 pm and they sent an engineer to fish them out within 5 minutes! Most 5 star hotels don't get you towels in that timeframe. The facilities, maybe a little older, but are clean and practical. My husband used the gym and couldn't stop raving about it- mind you, we go to high end gyms in SF. We haven't eaten here yet, but it looked Very fresh and smelled great when we walked by the restaurant today. There's a Marriott and Hilton in town, but this place is by far the way to go. Doesn't hurt that there's a live band in the lobby and some fun history all over the hotel. read more

Our Alaskan tour booked us here the night/morning (1am) we arrive for our tour/cruise. The service at the desk was very good and they greeted us with all the information we needed for our Coach/bus departing that morning at 9am. The room was nice (a little out dated) but had that luxury look, the bed was very comfortable and the shower had nice hot water. I would have giving 5 stars but the walls are supper thin and just as we were getting into REM sleep our neighbors decided to get up and talk on their phone !!! The wife really enjoyed the large soft towels that actually wrapped around your body... the water is a little hard as we are used to our water softer providing us super soft water. The view in the morning of the bay and the mountains were gorgeous once you looked paste the parking garage and business, at least we got a good photo to start our day. Breakfast was great!!! I had the fresh Salmon Lox and the wife had the crab Omelet... very tasty and hit spot. read more

Spending our first week of our honeymoon using Anchorage as our homebase, we stayed at the Hotel Captain Cook for five nights. Our room was located on the captains deck, which provided a nice view of downtown Anchorage and the harbor. But beyond that, nothing from our stay really stood out. Parking was $36 a night for valet. There aren't a ton of great parking options in downtown Anchorage but we ended up self-parking in an open lot for $25 for a 24 hour period. Because of COVID, the Captain's Lounge was closed and the hotel offered to make this up to us by giving us a $30 a day breakfast allowance for their hotel restaurant, The Pantry. We took advantage of the breakfast allowance a few days and weren't really blown away by anything we ate. It was very average, basic breakfast fare. As for the room itself, it was very dated. The bed was not comfortable, the pillows were flat, and the sheets were quite scratchy. The water pressure was inconsistent and at one point, the water was coming out a yellowish brown color. When booking our honeymoon, I purposely steered away from larger chain hotels because I wanted to give a smaller, local hotel our business. I kind of wish we would've just gone with a chain hotel. read more

Although we didn't stay at the Cook on our last trip we did have dinner at the beautiful and ever stylish Crow's Nest. A favorite for friends. The service was spot on (we had the most charming server and I cannot remember her name!). The food was amazing and exactly the break we needed on a really long business trip. No trip to Anchorage is complete without a visit to this amazing restaurant. We do wish that the Hotel Captain Cook would soon reinstate the Captain's Deck facility. Infinitely convenient when there on business and always amazing food. We hope that comes back soon! read more

Stayed at the Cook for a work trip and enjoyed the classic , retro vibes and amenities of this hotel. They have a Barber and Shoe Shine stall in the hotel and the location is near the water and some great restaurants. Staff all very friendly. Bathroom was nice in the hotel room. Had a nice view of the water from my room on 7th floor. Temperature control and noise levels after hours were fine. Overall a good experience. read more

I stayed at Captain Cook for 3 nights. 2 nights from the 17th - 19th and another night on the 20th - 21st. I checked in around 10 PM on the 17th after a long flight and was greeted warmly by the front desk. Everyone was wearing masks and there was hand sanitizers all over the hotel. I was quickly given my room key as well and instructions on how to get to my room. Once at the room, I quickly settled down and unpacked a few of my things to shower. The shower itself was a bit janky but the water pressure was good. They offered a couple of products and plenty of towels which is always great. They even had some cleaning materials in the bathroom which was probably better for the cleaning staff. The bed itself was pretty comfortable and it had enough pillows for my addiction to multiple pillows. My entire stay at Captain Cook was extremely pleasant and the staff were amazing. Everyone was extremely accolading and friendly. Only downside was that the fitness club is closed on the weekends and that the Crow's Nest was also closed due to COVID. read more

Clean rooms, prompt service, good in room meals from Fletcher's, and my only fault I could find on our most recent stay was that I wished I had fluffier pillows that held their shape a little better, since I'm a multi-pillow back sleeper. I was promptly greeted as I drove up with my rental car. Dropping off my car was easy and I was guided to the front desk. There too I was warmly greeted. I had a room reserved with a king size bed. Since I had my son with me they offered to change me to a room with two beds but cautioned me that the only ones they had were by the elevators. When I declined that they offered to bring up a rollaway bed. This kindness was appreciated. There are three different towers so it can be a but confusing but the staff is quick to send you in the right direction. The rooms are large and clean. There is a Keurig coffee maker with coffee and different teas to choose from. The decor is a bit dated but everything was clean and well maintained. It was easy to get my car pulled up each time I needed it. I would gladly stay here again. read more

My husband and I stayed at the Cook 4/27/23. The door man Franco was wonderful. Great conversation while we waited for our car in valet. Educated and smart young man. He helped us find things in town. The front desk man Dexter was polite and a great smile. The bed was very comfortable and we had a great corner room on the 8th floor. The room was clean and well made. We will definitely stay here again. Ryan in the Crowes nest was a wonderful server! Very attentive and great information on the food choices. So I think the beds are soft and pillows are nice the food in the hotel is very tasty. Most of the people there are very friendly and helpful. I don't like the rooms in tower 2 they personally make me feel Claustrophobic but if you don't mind the space you should be fine. I will say this hotel manly caters to men. The Recreational area is small and cramped for the women. The gym space is small and right next to the showers there's not much space for beauty care and the showers are tight. The people in the area are kind but I believe this hotel needs to step it up for the women and make that area more welcoming like the people who work there. read more

Nice hotel, huge rooms and great service from hotel personnel. Had to call a couple of days before coming to this hotel to inquire about luggage that came from the ship and luggage that was coming from Denali. Upon arrival, I found that even though the hotel was packed full of guests coming from the train station to check in, the staff had everything well under control. I found my luggage, both bags that came from the two places, in my room. The room was super large, had a sitting room with TV in addition to the bedroom and a nice bathroom. The bedroom also had a nice TV. Even though I was only staying there one night, it had very nice facilities and a very nice downtown location. I was a little disappointed that their restaurant was already closed and that I had to go to a nearby restaurant to get a meal, but it did give me the opportunity to see a few blocks of the city and enjoy a comfortable evening. I would definitely recommend a stay here if you are going to be in the area. It is also very close to the rail station. Even though we were bussed over to the hotel, it was probably a reasonable walk as long as you did not have too much luggage. read more

I spent roughly a month staying here at one of the anchors of downtown Anchorage. As a hotel, it is adequate if a bit dated in the rooms. The staff is very attentive, polite, and willing to assist. The bottom floor hosts a cafe that serves breakfast, several moderate to expensive gift and art shops, and a small bar that serves very tasty food (this was the only dining facility open due to COVID). Parking is available nearby at a cost. Atop the hotel, the Crow's Nest serves high-end drinks and dining with amazing views of the Cook Inlet. Pluses and minuses. The Captain Cook Hotel isn't a resort, but I don't think they try to be. I have spent many a night in this hotel since I first arrived at Elmendorf AFB in 1971 (when the Captain Cook was a very new property). The hotel has aged quite a bit -- so have I, to be fair -- and over the years, staying here as a flight crew member, we have seen many changes, most good, but the laws of physics still apply and entropy ages us all, including the Captain Cook. First: the staff is first rate, and I say that with kindness, yet being objectively fair. They have integrity, and if approached using good manners, they're very helpful. Regardless of the weather, they're taking care of business in an industry that is very demanding. Do they make mistakes? Yes, but few: which one of us doesn't? I like the fact that they own up to their mistakes and make it right, given the opportunity. I've watched, over decades of staying here, young kids turning into excellent managers and supervisors -- having weathered the Covid insanity with grace and good manners. The hotel has made a lot of changes -- and while the interior is showing its age, the rooms have been updated a number of times -- mostly for the better. Some observations: 1. There's enough of a gap between the floor and the bottom of the door (I'm most rooms) to allow a lot of light into the room when all the lights are out. Annoying. Sometimes there is a draft that comes under the door like a williwaw. 2. Temperature control is a bit difficult in some towers' rooms. Suggest heavier window coverings. 3. During summer months, the rooms are illuminated significantly because there isn't enough dense material to block the light -- and light, like noise, makes getting a good night's sleep difficult. Put in some thick, dark window-covering drapes that completely block out the light? 4. Tile bathroom floors are a good idea in terms of hygiene, but are c-c-colllllddddd to stand on after a hot shower. 5. Would someone from the hotel PLEASE read this one? LED lights are excellent in terms of saving energy, but those that are intensely blue are devastating. Why? The mind wakes up to a state of alertness when exposed to BRIGHT BLUE LIGHT. Putting these in hotel rooms might make for easier reading, but make it very difficult to get to sleep. Suggestion: there are LED lights that have much "warmer" frequencies. Put these in your rooms: avoid the brilliant sunlight frequencies. I marvel at the fact that despite being an Alaska property, the staff works hard to keep the lobby and restaurant floors dry and clean around-the-clock... hard to do when everything outside is covered with snow, ice, and slush. Well done. I calculated that I spent an average of 16 nights a year in the Captain Cook Hotel as a flight crew member, over the past 27 years. The hotel has a lot to offer. Again, it's not a destination resort, and Alaska has something to offer in splendor and majesty if only you'll venture outdoors while you're here. read more

Ross - the assistant manager - insults clients, acts aggressively when doubts or confusion arise and places himself in the midst of conversations in which he has no part. There was a snafu with the reservations that we had with another hotel and we came here at 9pm after a long train ride and a lot of uncertainty if there were even rooms available. Thankfully they were able to accommodate us! They had been dealing with the same issue all day from the other hotel, where the booking sites didn't let customers know that their reservation had been canceled, so the team at the front desk seemed a little exhausted from most likely irritated groups of people wanting to check in. I'm grateful that they didn't up charge the room, this was a much nicer hotel than the one we originally booked and it ended up not costing us too much more! This place reminded me of The Shining with Jack Nicholson. The interior and design resembles the intricacies of the lodge itself. With the wooden pillars and pictures hanging plus the three separate towers; each with different amenities on the lower level. Fortunately I did not have a "HERE'S JOHNNY!!!" moment and go crazy with cabin fever. I would have if they didn't change our room but they did. Our original room had only one bed but they granted our request for a room with two beds at no charge. Some of the rare amenities include a barber shop and shoe-shine station. Also has multiple gift shops and a pretty cool workout facility (women's on tower 2, men's at tower 1). Each tower has a different restaurant/bar associated with it too. It would be nicer if they were all centralized but with the design of the hotel, they have to be add-ons which I get. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable about the history of the hotel. I don't even need to say much because the pictures say it all. Hotel captain cook is supposed to be one of the top hotels downtown. Our room was extremely disappointing. Paying too dollar for this??? I felt like i was staying at a motel. The mirror was filthy, thermostat coming out the wall, windows were dirty, lights didn't work in the entry way. There was blood looking stain on the light fixture. The fact that they would even room a guest here is beyond me. Wouldn't even rate it one star. read more

I was pleasantly surprised and impressed with this hotel. Stayed for two nights in a lovely, comfortable room inside Tower 2. From a few of the reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I can tell you I'd never stay anywhere else in Anchorage. I ordered room service for breakfast from The Pantry, and it was fresh and wonderful. Dinner at Fletcher's was solid. Service was prompt and friendly from the hotel's entire staff. The atmosphere of the public spaces were warm, inviting, and very Alaskan. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel. Oh, and the location is excellent for downtown restaurants and shopping. If I had to nitpick about one thing, I'd say it'd be helpful if they offered an airport shuttle- even if for a nominal charge. The taxi service (I used Yellow Cab) is abysmal, I almost missed my flight, and got scammed by the driver. It's by no fault of this great hotel, but it would be a helpful amenity. read more

The best part of this hotel was the availability of restaurants within the facility. It also had close access to Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. The hotel is older but that adds to its charm. The hotel location is perfect for all the restaurants and sightseeing around Downtown Anchorage area. We stayed at Captain Cook only 2 nights for the first and last day of our Alaska trip. It was part of our land package from Princess Lodges. We did not eat at the hotel restaurants since there were so many places to eat walking distance. Our first night we had a corner room and it was spacious with 2 wall windows. Luggage service was punctual when we needed to check out at certain time. We did had a car rental the first day and the only option was either valet parking or street parking. The valet was friendly and let us parked for about 15-20 minutes while we check-in. Since we were part of the Princess Lodges package, our airport shuttle drop off was included. read more

This was the fourth hotel I stayed in on my Alaskan land and cruise. This also was the only property not owned by Princess Cruise line. While the room was massive and the amenities where very nice. I could tell that the service was not at the high standard Princess had set at it's other places. Not saying it was bad just not as stellar. We had one stay overnight and two meals at the hotel. The supper meal was 5 stars. Breakfast was 2 stars. Since I am reviewing the supper meal in another review I do want to mention breakfast. Mass confusion on a great scale. We saw our server twice. Order and when he brought out the food. Nothing after that. No coffee refills nor water refills. While the meal was included in my plan this just was not the standard I had come to expect. Would I stay there again? Well the chances are slim that I will ever get back but the room is huge and very comfortable. So yes I would. read more

Anchorage is lacking in 5 star hotels. The sheets are clean and the room cleaners and Conceirge Ross, are five star. Thank you. The rooms are a bit outdated. I had a constant high pitched buzz in my room from the air conditioning unit that could not be turned off. It drove me nuts! The room service is fast but the vegetable servings are minimal and if you ask for more they charge you for a side. The breakfast restauant downstairs is a bit dark but the waitresses are full of smiles to brighten it up. The hostess how ever lacks grace and any sort of grin at all! It wasn't the best hotel I've stayed at but so much better than the Hilton downtown that I would stay there again. read more

We were here for less than 12 hours after landing in Anchorage and before boarding our Princess Cruise bus to go to the first lodge. Just long enough to check in, get to our room, realize the lock was not 100% operational, move to another (nicer) room (with an actual view), sleep then eat breakfast. The beds were comfortable. The suite was very spacious. The bathroom was large. Everything was clean. Breakfast was good. I had the Crab Benedict (worth the extra cost to add crab). Mom had the Polynesian French Toast, which we both thought was yummy. We added a side of reindeer sausage, which was decent but pricey. Overall, a good choice if you're in the area. Near some good restaurant options and within walking distance of the water to enjoy the sunset. read more

My girlfriend and I came here from Hawaii for a week of seminar at this hotel. We won't informed that the seminar was switched to online learning till we arrived in Anchorage. We attended the online learning for 2 days and decided to shorten our stay. The hotel was very understanding and let us check out 3 days earlier without charging us any penalties. The staff are amazing polite and professional, we really appreciate their service. I accidentally left my winter gloves when I checked out. I called the hotel and left a voicemail with the security department. James from the security department called me within an hour and let me know he found my gloves in the room. He took my home address information and sent my gloves back to me. Also, the Christmas displays in the lobby was so festive! Even though we didn't get to do in person seminar, we really enjoyed our stay at the hotel. read more

I spent one night here during my visit to Alaska. My room on the 15th floor had a magnificent view of the city. The room was comfortable and big; the bed was superb. The soap, shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer are all good quality. The television is a good size and the wireless worked well. The next day I went down to the gym and exercised, went swimming for an hour in their semi-Olympic pool located in the basement. Also, had a very relaxing eucalyptus steam just before checking out. I walked around the neighborhood and there are many things to see nearby. I walked to the mall and also found a great restaurant around the corner "Snow City Cafe." The lobby has an old feeling. I liked the paintings on the walls and the graphs of Captain Cook's voyage through the seas. The front desk was friendly and accommodating. I look forward to staying here soon again. read more

This is one of the worst experiences in a Hotel that I have ever had. First, the hotel is tired and dirty and in need of refurbishment. Second, the Front Desk staff were absolutely rude and ambivalent . They answered in curt responses, avoided eye contact, and left a horrible impression from the very beginning. Third, there is only one restaurant (PUB) open for dinner, with the exception of the very nice and expensive restaurant on the top floor. The Pub, named "Fletchers" was understaffed, resulting in a long wait for a table and no room service. I picked up the pizza to bring back to my room, and it was raw. Just avoid this hotel unless you like dirty carpet, old tile, dirty grout and nasty bath tubs. read more
