I'm here and I'm sad.Not sure I got booked into this place but I've definitely made a mistake. First, the door says this room rents for $56-$77 a night. I way overpaid, pre-paid non refundable. This place is a dump. Front lobby and elevator smell terribly. Carpets and floors haven't been updated in many years. The swimming pool has no water. Paint is peeling in hallway. I've stayed in older hotels before, but they were refurbished, clean and lovely. I can hear the people next door talking and there is no ice machine. read more

Reserved a room for one night. Nov 5 - Nov 6 Term and conditions were not explained at the time of booking the reservation. Who ever we spoke to who books guests was not well trained I guess.. but here's our experience. We were not informed that we had a discounted rate, nor were we informed that due to the discounted rate, there was a no cancelation policy. Neither of these terms were listed anywhere nor were they mentioned at anytime during the booking. We were under the impression that would could still cancel our reservation based on the confirmation email we have received from booking the reservation. (SEE SCREENSHOT OF EMAIL) We spoke to the front desk manager and the general manager of the hotel. Both were not accommodating and did not honor the cancelation nor refund our money. We called Nov 3, at 12:00Pm to cancel the reservation. That was 51 hours before the date/time of arrival. We requested to cancel the reservation prior to the declared 48-hour notice. We had to cancel due to family emergency, we had a death in the family. When requesting the cancelation, Angela Hentz asked for PROOF of our dead family member. If a family member passed Nov 3 there is no way we'd even be able to secure a death certificate in time for the time of the book reservation. I find it appalling she requested verification of death in our family in order to provide any sort of accommodation. This was very unprofessional and inappropriate. This reservation was barely $150 and I had to go a great lengths for them to consider any possibility of getting our money back. Angela called us back and said there was nothing she could do other than offer us a credit for another nights stay. I did not take this offer because I would never take my business to this kind of establishment. I recommended staying at the best western, or Marriott in the nearby areas. Save ur time and money and earn rewards while staying at another hotel in downtown phx. read more

The history of this hotel was amazing! My friend and I booked this hotel as a cheap last minute option just to sleep. It's definitely an old hotel so has an old vibe and lots of original pieces and history which is really cool to see. However, the place definitely needs to be updated which I think you can do will still keeping the authenticity. The tv for example (barely had any working channels) and sadly the pool was closed as well.. I was in between 3 to 4 stars but the location and service definitely pushed it to 4. Not your typical hotel, but definitely a little gem for a casual stay. read more

The hotel is really nice for being that old. It doesn't smell old. The shower was strong. The pool and fitness room weren't open when I went. The highlight , Dulce (the front desk person at night ) was so so so so so helpful and friendly. She made us feel like VIPs. Beautiful hotel! So much history and charm. I came to stay at room 720, and I was not disappointed. It exceeded my expectations in every way and I had a great, truly unforgettable experience. I've been to a lot of allegedly active hotels, but nothing ever came close to this. I can't wait to be back! The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Yes the hotel is old, but that's exactly its appeal and renovating it would absolutely diminish its character. It's great just as it is. The only negatives are that the pool area is closed and it does not have parking. However, there are plenty of public parking garages in walking distance (just around the block). My soul sisters and I have stayed here a couple times before and loved it! So when my mom was coming to town, I encouraged her to book here. So, so grateful I did. Due to a miscommunication the surgery my mom had flown in to be here for was delayed a week. Anthony at the front desk went so far above and beyond to help her get a refund through Expedia (who were nothing but rude to us) and helped her rebook for the following week. All of the staff was so friendly and helpful. When my husband passed during the surgery the following week, Anthony gave my mom a card to give me from all the staff giving their condolences. They were all so kind without being ingratiating. I loved this place before this situation and after it? Only place I'll recommend to friends and daily visiting. The hotel itself is a historical landmark, it isn't sleek and modern, it's full of history and I love that about it. You won't be disappointed if you stay here. I spent only one night here. At first it has a cool historic feel to it. Can't complain for the price to stay a night. When I woke up in the morning I was brushing my teeth when I saw a cockroach crawling on the wall of my room. I immediately called the front desk to notify them as well as request a refund because who knows if a cockroach crawled on me in my sleep. The front desk lady was nice and told me I'd have to request a refund through the third party website I booked the hotel through and offered to have a cleaning person come up and catch the cockroach. I told her I can no longer see it so the whole room needs to be deep cleaned. After hanging up the phone call, another cockroach fell off the ceiling and landed right on the pillow where my head was the entire night. I packed up all of my things (after shaking everything out) and checked out asap. Absolutely disgusted with the cleanliness of the hotel. read more

We were in town for a work conference and booked at the Hotel San Carlos due to its proximity to the venue. From the moment we arrived, the experience was appalling. There was nowhere to pull up to unload or check in--no valet, no designated area, nothing. We were forced to park in a sketchy garage about a block away and haul all of our luggage through the street. During that short walk, we were aggressively approached multiple times by unhoused individuals, some of whom got uncomfortably close, asking for money. It felt unsafe from the very beginning. Once inside, the situation only deteriorated. The building is extremely outdated, and not in a charming or historic way--in a neglected, almost condemned way. Our rooms were hot and stuffy, with no working air conditioning. The only airflow came from a noisy, decades-old fan that sounded like it might fall off the ceiling at any moment. The furniture was worn, the beds were sagging, and the bathroom resembled something you'd expect in a prison--cramped, grimy, and absolutely uninviting. Security was nonexistent. There were no bolts or secondary locks on the doors, and the entrance to the building itself required stepping over people sleeping on the ground outside. The door to the room didn't even reach the ceiling--there was a flimsy accordion-style panel filling the gap, which meant we could hear every single noise from the rooms next door. And I mean everything. The TV had maybe five channels, the gym was out of order, and the pool was completely drained. The ceiling showed signs of serious water damage, with sagging and cracked areas that looked like they might collapse. The floors had an alarming amount of "give" to them when walking, like you were about to fall through. And the mirrors--floor-to-ceiling above the bed--felt less like a design choice and more like a clue that this hotel might primarily serve an hourly clientele. It did not feel like a place for professionals, families, or anyone who values safety or cleanliness. To put it plainly, this was the most horrifying hotel experience I've ever had. I didn't feel safe, I didn't feel clean, and had we stayed we certainly wouldn't have slept. We couldn't get out of there fast enough and thankfully were able to secure accommodations elsewhere. If you're considering staying here--don't. It felt like the kind of place you leave with a disease or in a body bag. read more

For a historic hotel, a nice stay on at the ACG convention in October, 2025. Front staff very professional and friendly. Room clean but simple. I missed a small refrigerator, microwave, but was still able to enjoy. Pillows fluffy. Mattress so so but did the job. Yes no individualized Thermostats but ceiling fan did the job also. Hot shower though showerhead was a little low TV. Neighbors not too loud. Yes it's on the trolley line but if you're tired, it will not keep you awake. Price was right. Easy walking distance to the convention site, catholic church. Next time will find the YMCA because the fitness center so to speak was terrible, and that was the only downfall, real downfall. Elliptical and one treadmill out of order. The other treadmill so so. One workout machine with weights. So would suggest some upgrades to the fitness center. Otherwise again thank you so much. One other thing I asked for a taxi service at 3 AM and she was actually there at 2:30. Not sure why she didn't give me the flat rate but heck nice ride. Again thank you. read more

Stayed here a couple nights while in town for business. It was looking forward to staying in this historic hotel. I just didn't realize how out of date it would be. The room was clean, but needed some wall repairs done. The hallway carpet was coming off the ground in some places. And the TV didn't even have cable. The bed was pretty hard. On the plus side, the location is in the heart of downtown Phoenix. Staff was friendly. Gym was decent. Soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion were of good quality (Rusk). And I did like the old hotel feel ambiance. The government rate was about $140 per night with $20 per day for valet parking. I feel if they're going to charge this much, they need to do some repairs and offer some current amenities. read more

The halls are eerily quiet and I had the sensation I was being watched. That's as close I came to any type of paranormal experience. The Hotel San Carlos is decorated with old photos, articles and pieces of memorabilia. The Suite is a beautiful room with portraits of Marilyn Monroe. Above the sink is the original faucet from 1928. The bed was extravagantly comfortable. I loved the view from the window. When it was dark I took a swim (the pool was built in the late 50s). There's no better feeling then swimming at night, under the stars and the bright moonlight, with the sounds of the city in the background and the sights of airplanes flying above destination bound. As a key witness and storyteller to the history of Phoenix, the Hotel San Carlos has plenty to tell. She looks the way she does for a reason. She does not try to change as there is no need. She does not try to impress, she simply does. The Hotel San Carlos is an ornamental jeweled bouquet in the ever changing garden that is Phoenix. I'm looking forward to my next stay. I highly recommend The Hotel San Carlos and I say thank you to the owners for keeping history alive and for a unique and pleasurable experience. read more

We booked this hotel for the rooftop pool. Upon arrival, the pool was empty and filled with broken concrete pieces. It was really great! We also had a magnificently large and dense stain on the floor that was so nice to see every time we returned to the room. While enjoying the lovely view from the greasy window, we found what appeared to be a smashed brownie on the curtains. Bonus! Nom Nom Nom. Sadly, I was not molested by a ghost while at the hotel. My husband and I were walking through the streets of Phoenix snd we saw the restaurant attached and thought it looked like a great place to stop. However I am a nursing mother and wanted to pump before going to enjoy food and a drink. Without question the employee at the front desk handed me a key to a private restroom so that I had a room with done privacy. Unfortunately by the time I was done the restaurant was closed between the lunch and dinner rush. I felt bad as restrooms were for customers only and although we intended to be we weren't. The man at the front desk didn't seem to mind at all and I'm so grateful for his hospitality and accommodations for a new mom! read more

This Historic Hotel has just the right feeling and vibe. The down stairs is elegant and inviting. Tony the front guy is amazingly knowledgeable and friendly. We were allowed to QUIETLY walk around all 7 of the floors and take pictures of the history on the hotel , then went to the third floor and enjoyed the outside pool from the deck. location directly off the Valley Metro Light Rail , so if you are savy enough to park a bit away for cheaper parking just hop the light rail and viola there you are. The rooms are smaller than you see in most hotels today , but the ambience is well worth it. We had zero problems with the WiFi, full range of programming on the TV - but seriously who cares - you are in downtown Phoenix next to some amazing eateries including Seamus McCaffrey's Irish Pub & Restaurant out the door and there it is. There is a newer eatery literally across the street called the Cornish Pasty Co. And a cute little Mexican restaurant directly underneath the hotel itself. read more

A few things could be updated so it would match the other cookie cutter hotels in the area. You can always stay in a big chain hotel. This place is very unique. There was no ability to take a bath and many of the tiles were cracked. For all the $$$ they supposedly spent on renovation was lost on the strong smell of bleach. I appreciate cleanliness but for gawd's sake hide the bleach smell with a French scent. Vending machine was totally inoperable but the ice machine and water fountain worked. Pillows were like rocks -- I brought my own hotel down king pillow otherwise it would have been completely sleepless. If you are into spooky -- by all means book this. We booked Hotel San Carlos because it was close to the Arizona Federal Theater, and also because it is not a standard, cookie-cutter-rooms hotel. We enjoyed the historic charm of this 1929 building, the price was great and the staff knowledgeable and polite. It is indeed a short walk from Hotel San Carlos to the Arizona Federal Theater and the historic Orpheum Theater, and there were many dining options only steps away from the lobby. Note there is no onsite parking. Although there is a valet lane in front for loading and unloading, garage parking is around the corner and costs about $15 a day. The neighborhood seemed safe and we felt secure walking around the downtown area after leaving the car in the garage. We read reviews others posted stating the rooms were too hot and warning the air conditioning was inadequate, so we brought small fans. While it is true the property has central AC so guests have no in-room AC controls, we found it was not too hot with the ceiiing fan and our small personal fans on the bedside tables while we slept. Phoenix is sweltering in the summer and this very old building is not the place for you if you want your room to be refrigerated, but we found it comfortable enough. We imagine the old-fashioned radiators keep the rooms toasty in the winter. The rooms are clean and not huge but plenty big enough for two people, have a good-sized closet with full-size ironing board and iron provided, and the bed was quite comfortable. The bathrooms are small but cute and serviceable; the rooms that face the street have a bath with shower and the inside rooms have a stall shower to ask for a "view" room if you want the bathtub. The pool area is nice, with tables and chairs for gathering and even bringing in take-out meals, and its 3rd-floor roof-top location offers views of the downtown Phoenix skyscrapers. Overall we had a very pleasant stay at a very cool old hotel! read more

This hotel was loaded with history, plaques stocked full of information lined the walls; However, if you want a restful comfortable night, you may want to stay somewhere else. First off, the reception we got was just flat out rude. I wasn't sure where to park and the lady at the desk tried to give me directions without naming streets. When I told her I needed clear directions, she looked at me like I was totally stupid. Well, I don't know my way around downtown Phoenix. Anyway the parking lot as it turns out, is clear around the block and if you are in good shape and 110° weather (at 7:30 pm) it's a good jaunt. We were also told there was a valet, but the only lot in sight was self pay. We saw the other front desk lady walking past our parked car. She commented that she was glad we found the lot!?!? Our room-- Ahh the room: tiny, musky, the hard (need I say... hard) bed filled almost the entire space which came with hard square corners we kept knocking out toes on. The bathroom: antique and tiny. If you are NFL size, you might not fit in the shower or at least have room to turn around in the bathroom. And, there is absolutely no where to set your stuff except on the closet across the bathroom on the other side of the hall on the top shelf. And be warned, there isn't many electric outlets in the bathroom, but an isobar was present by the desk. The gym: if you see other peoples photos you'll notice there is a cable machine. Only one side was working, as a result I didn't do any weightlifting. Also there is a beautiful treadmill, recumbent bike and an elliptical. Elliptical never did light up and work, but the room is large airy and comfortable to be in. I'm not sure if the treadmill is functioning or not. There weren't any towels or cleaning supplies on the second day I went into work out, so I had to go back to the room to get a towel. But there is a flatscreen TV and all you people who like a little entertainment. The pool: is quite lovely and outside on the top of the second floor. I only stuck my foot in, and the top step seemed a little oily. But the water looked clean enough, probably from everybody's oil from Sun bathing. A good night sleep??? Well we stayed here two nights, AND I am here to report we both didn't fall asleep till 1 AM each night and slept in almost till 10 o'clock each morning we were so exhausted. It is not that it's so noisy there, it's just the walls are paper thin and you can hear everything. I mean everything! We heard the neighbors sneezing, cell phones ringing at midnight, and luckily not much else if you know what I mean. So to sum up, if you want to stay in a place that has historical information about Elvis and Monroe; Then go ahead and do so for the experience. There is even a plaque on the third floor about a lady who committed suicide off the roof of the building and how she haunts the place to this day. Personally, I would walk in and take a look around for an hour and move on down the street so you can get a good night's sleep, a room with a view and living space and a shower that you can actually breathe and move around in. read more

I'm staying here now for Super Bowl weekend, and this hotel does not meet the low expectations I had for it. I would leave if I could snag a room at a different hotel -- alas, no vacancies on Super Bowl eve. The cons: General dinginess, the paint on the walls of my tiny room is chipping, there is rust in sink of my tiny bathroom (which has bottle opener next to the toilet -- very odd), the water in the shower goes from cold to scalding for no apparent reason, the walls are paper thin (heard my neighbor watching a porno earlier -- charming), the place smells like mold, it's way too hot (no individual thermostat in room), and the staff can't be bothered. The pros: It's haunted (which could be a con if you're not into ghosts), centrally located, they have an entire floor decorated with posters of air force fighter planes (which could be a con if you're not into fighter jets), free Wi-Fi. It was built in 1928, and it feels that way--and not in a good way (e.g., Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston built even earlier). Would not return. read more

The website is very misleading. I would contact the hotel directly as far as cancellation policy and parking availability questions. Do not rely on the website. We had to cancel due to a medical emergency and they did not honor the info on the website. The whole reason we picked this hotel was for the haunted atmosphere. We arrived and the front desk lady rolled her eyes and said "ugh, it's not haunted". Way to kill the vibe, wow! Okay so we had a reservation so obviously we were staying anyway. We were told veterans get the military discount but she said they don't. Finally got situated, up to our room, and got a phone call saying to come get our vehicle from valet. We've been driving all day, we are exhausted, what are they even talking about? These idiots offer valet parking but don't know how to drive a stick shift. We were told they "couldn't take the risk of driving our car" because it was a stick shift. We called ahead of time to VERIFY they could valet park our car and they said yes as long as it's not an oversized truck (it's not). We offered to park it ourselves in the valet area just for security and they said no. The customer service here is non existent... I can see why they have bad ratings. read more

Chose this hotel because it was recommended by company travel program(not sure why it was curated on top) price likely although it was not considered cheap imo. (189+tax for a weekday) one of the worst hotels ive stayed at aside from motel 6. Not only was i unable to get a good night rest due to random sounds from the radiator, large gaps in the room doors, ultra thin walls where you can hear someone lightly snoring. On top of that; the place is haunted. It didnt help that the lights kept flickering and the random clanking sounds throughout the old premise. I booked a stay at Hotel San Carlos for one night through Groupon for $76 after taxes. Most other hotels in the area go for $120-300, so finding this deal was awesome. My boyfriend and I live in AZ and he wanted to celebrate his birthday by having a staycation downtown so we could have fun with family and friends without worrying about a way to get home at the end of the night. Originally, we were going to book a night at Hotel Palomar but like I said, we weren't looking to spend a lot of money. I started reading reviews before we checked in and was feeling nervous that I hadn't made a good decision because there were more bad than good things being said. From the moment we got to the hotel to the time we checked out, our stay was anything from dissappointing. The staff was nice and let us check In early. Before we parked we talked to the valet service and asked for advice on parking. They could have given us excuses to use their service but instead, they pointed across the street and let us know that on the weekends, parking in those spots were free. Awesome! Free parking. Once we got to our room, everything was clean and the room was a nice temperature. The rooms are small and the bathroom is even smaller but I didn't expect anything else. Its a little ridiculous how many people complained about the raised up part of the floor you have to step over to get in the shower. Wahhh. I barely noticed it, and anyone with a brain should have no problems stepping over it. Also, the shower does fluctuate in temperature when someone flushes a toilet, but it was never an unbearable cold or heat. Once we got settled in we went to the pool, its a cute little pool but by the time we got out there the sun was covered by the building surrounding it, so that was a bummer. For lunch, we went next door to McCaffery's. They have great food and our bartender was great. Honestly, I have no complaints about our stay. Its a cute little hotel and for staying on a Saturday night, there were no dramatic noises going on and I didn't hear anyone talking in another room, having sex, or going to the bathroom. I heard a couple of door slams but I think at any hotel its typical. All the bad reviews are obviously from people who have a case of first world problems. Wahhh, "no room service", Wahhh "the rooms are too small", Wahhh "I couldn't control the room temperature", Wahhh "there's something I have to lift my foot up 5 inches from the ground to get over in to the shower", Wahhh, Wahhh, Wahhh. Small rooms with paper thin walls and no control of individual room temperature. I was given a wake up call at 6 am on my first day even though I hadn't requested one. On the second and third night the heater was really loud and on all night so I couldn't turn it off or sleep. Luckily they gave me a new room with a quiet heater after I went to the front desk at 4 am. Really bad internet connectivity as well. read more

Unfortunately my experience with this hotel is not very good. We booked the hotel for myself and 5 students for a conference we were attending. Location was ideal for the conference. However they were not accommodating in some ways. When we got to the place they indicated that the valet is only available to small or medium vehicles. I wasn't too happy but all the same since I was driving a suburban, so I couldn't use the service. I still decided to unload the vehicle there but the valet lady got mad that I was in the space unloading, well where exactly should I offload if not in that space? I asked what my options were for parking and they directed me to a garage around the corner. Problem is that garage closes at 6pm, so it would be useless since I know I would not be inside before 6. Then, I was told that I needed a credit card authorization there, that apparently should have been done prior to arrival. I could not do an authorization at that point because I would have requested my institution to give me permission. After unsuccessful negotiations, I decided to find another hotel since they could not accommodate me. They were not happy about it, but where would I park a vehicle? 2 days later the manager called me to see if I would come back for 1 night even, and had the nerve to ask if I could take a cancelation fee at the other hotel to come back. Clearly they were only interested in themselves and had no concern about what I would do. I still had no solution for the car at which she said that she would allow me to park in front of the hotel for free, well if this was the case, why didn't you offer that to me before I decided to move on to another location. Their best offer was credit for a future stay, for which is useless since it was the first time I've been to phoenix and I really don't have any reason to be there again, what would I do with a credit I will never use Of course, they decided to charge me for 1 night as per "hotel policy", yet they were willing to bend other policies to accommodate me if I stayed. Never saw the room but based on other feedback, I feel like I dodged a bullet. Highly disappointed in them and will absolutely never look at them again. read more

We came here because my neice wanted to stay at a "haunted hotel". I knew it was old but I didn't think it hadn't been renovated in 40 years. The rooms are small. The bathrooms are small. No AC, no heaters. There's no cable tv, internet is hilariously bad when working but during my stay didn't work. The cost was absurd. It's covid so the price was about as much as a suite across the street at the Hilton. We wanted a room on the top floors, get a view if you will, none were available. Not that they weren't available, it's that they shut down the top 4 floors(out of 7). How about a room with 2 queen beds. Nope 2 fulls. How about the most expensive room in the building, the Monroe suite, that's the room I chose for it was the only room apparently with 2 beds in 2 connected rooms. It's on the 3rd floor, it's 1 bed and 1 couch. The Marilyn Monroe decor is super tacky. Horrible Monroe photo collages. Like seriously, get a painting or at least a famous photo in there. The carpet is coming up all over the place, tripping hazards. It's been updated since her stay there in the 60's but they must've decided it was perfect in the early 80's. we also only found 1 power outlet in each room. What happened during my stay left the biggest impression. People came to our room randomly, knocking on our doors to ask to see our room, at 1:45 in the morning a young man came to my nieces room(who is a child), banging on the door loudly, asking if we wanted to hang out because he can hear her talking. Apparently they put a full blown creeper in the room next to us. I called the front desk. No action was taken. The next morning the management had no idea what I was talking about. read more
