I live very close to Hotrods, and my friends and I had high hopes that we would get a great local restaurant and hang out spot. The choice of good food in our area is about as weak as it gets. We went to opening night and had lunch there during the first week of opening. We were sorely disappointed. Bad food, slow service, horrible furniture and an overwhelmed staff. A lot of it was growing pains but the biggest thing that stood out was a severe lack of leadership or managerial direction. It didn't look good for them. I gave it a couple of months to get settled in and tried again. What a difference a little time makes. The staff was much improved and they upgraded the furniture, a positive start. Now for the food. Early on, their menu was big and flavor was small. Now it's a one page menu, easy to read and choose. I had the open faced pulled pork sandwich and it was great. My wife had the fettuccini and that was very good as well. Salads were very fresh and the pretzel appetizer came with three tasty dipping sauces. The facility is top notch. If you like family friendly spots and love Hotrods, this is going to be a great spot. I'm really excited to have a local restaurant that has some character. I highly recommend Hotrods. read more

We have had breakfast, lunch, appetizers, and dinner there several times. The food has always been well prepared and the servers have an excellent attitude. We live in Corona de Tucson, so it is very convenient. Everything is extremely clean (including the area where they work on cars) that you could eat off the floor. I even had my Red Hat Luncheon there. Those who were able to make it out that far from Tucson, gave it a thumbs up. For the most part, our experience at Hotrods was good. We came on a Friday night around 9 and headed upstairs to the bar for some drinks and Karaoke. The bartender was attentive and we never had to wait long for drinks. However, the drinks were served in warm, just-washed glasses that reeked of dish detergent, which kind of ruined the experience. I have been here several times over the last 2 years. The service is poor and the food is nothing special to poor as well. Thank goodness for the bar! Despite speaking with the ever changing management (which a large portion of the community seems to have done) there appears to be little effort to improve the costumers experience. Here is to the hope that one day Hot Rods may choose to value it's patrons by putting forth the effort in providing them with a pleasing dining experience, as I am sure they are well aware of their poor reputation in the community at this point. Hopefully someday they will improve..... I myself am spent on this one. I will follow Yelp as well as the community's testimonials for signs of improvement before I decide whether or not to return. The theme is fun and unique. The atmosphere is relaxed and fun. And the food totally rock. I was with a group of 12 or more and everyone had nothing but good things to say about their meal! We set up a party of 42. We provided menu selections for all and provided them to Hot Rods Old Vail. The planning hosts physically visited the restaurant twice in one week prior to our reservation date to present pre orders and confirm everything. After we arrived it took 2 1/2 hours to get the first cold meals, salads etc. The hot meals came out one at a time, these were cold as well and 8 meals never showed at all. Went here as part of a group of over 40 people on Saturday April 2nd. Our group organizers had made a 12:45 reservation and we had all pre-ordered our lunches the day before. We arrived at 12:40 and were seated upstairs. To make a very long story short, food was EXTREMELY slow in coming out of the kitchen. In fact, I don't think anyone was served before 2:00. By 3:00, there were still about 6 or 7 people who hadn't been served any food, including my husband and myself! After 2 1/2 hours, we finally gave up, canceled our order and left. There was no explanation or apology given to any of us. The first sentence on their website is "Hot Rods Old Vail is an experience like no other." This is very true as we've never been to another restaurant where we weren't served any food!! How can this restaurant stay in business?!? I've been here for dinner three times and each and every time we've been ignored at the counter, turned around had my hand on the door and then someone comes running over to seat us. Tried this place multiple times. They are hit and miss. One time you have the best burger of your life, the next time you have the worse. Lately it's been the later. Service is terrible and it's not uncommon to wait 45 minutes to get your order taken and another hour for your food or beer to arrive. Last time i was there my food was burnt and turned over to hide it. Like you wont notice and egg burnt black on one side. I gave up on them read more

I initially visited Hotrods Old Vail because I wanted a place to meet friends coming from both Sierra Vista and Tucson. And it is super convenient for that. The food is very good and reasonably priced (good variety too). What marks to place as special is the staff---pleasant, helpful, and very competent. I have arranged meetings there, and they went off without a hitch. Here's a hint for anyone who wants to hold a meeting in a pleasant atmosphere----during weekdays you probably can reserve the upstairs lounge and have privacy. Check with JJ, the manager. I don't get out too much anymore because I have a five month old son, so I was pretty excited when my parents offered to take me to lunch today. I'd never been to Hotrods before and was looking forward to trying a new restaurant. Too bad it was such an awful experience. We arrived around 1:30 for lunch and the restaurant did not appear to be overly crowded, we waited a couple of minutes for a table to be prepared as there were five of us dining. While we were waiting a few other parties entered the lobby, we were seated before the other parties and a waitress came right over to take a our drink order. She returned about 10 mins later with our drinks and took our order, no one ordered anything complicated. My mother and I both had chicken wraps, my father had a cobb salad and my sister and her husband had burgers. We sat back and waited for our food, we waited and waited and waited. We noticed after about 25 mins that the tables of guests seated after us already had their food. The server came out around 40 mins in and said it would be just five more mins our food was up next. 14 mins later the food was still not out and people who came in after us were finished with their meal. My father was incredible upset and flagged down our server. He stated that he would just take the check for the drinks and we would leave. About two mins late the food arrived, a manager came out and apologized. He stated there was a big party upstairs and they were running on a 40 min wait time in the kitchen. He stated that he would discount the ticket for us. I've worked in kitchens before and no matter how busy you are it should not take and hour to make a couple of wraps and a salad. At the very least the waitress could have told us about the long wait and given us a heads up. We started eating the food was mediocre. The tortillas on the wrap were dried out and fell apart making the wrap messy. Nobody really liked their food the waitress never came back to check up on us. The bill came a bit later the manager reduced it by 50%. Personally, I think it should have been free. We all left less than satisfied and probably won't be back. What a shame- I so rarely get to go eat out these days and the place we go to is a disaster. Hopefully they get their act together because the concept is pretty cool. read more

So our first trip to Hot Rods was a disaster! Menu was over welming and service left much to be desired. Burgers overcooked after 45 minute wait with no resolve. Reading other reviews this seems the normal. Lots of entertainment, giggling and loud laughing by other employees. We decided to give it another chance and upon entering was met with 2 young girls so busy talking together, we were flat out ignored. Another Employee was passing thru and welcomed us (save) and invited us into dining room and we were seated at a high bar table. This is when we met your bartender Judy. So, the food was better but not up to par, but Judy was great! Her bubbly personality and service made us definately be back customers! We hope this is a direction for Hot Rods to come. We were sitting outside one fine evening and spent over $100 eating and drinking. We mostly waited on our selves because the service at Hot Rods has always been lacking and the food not great. But we tipped the bartender generously anyway. We decided to have one more round, One person in our party scribbled on the charge receipt so the bartender would not serve her. She would not even come out to our table. The manager was not concerned either. So.. we left and will not go back. We will go to Chuys where drinks are cheaper, service is better, and the staff is friendlier. Will be glad when the new eating establishments open in the new shopping center. Never Again! Took over an hour to get our food and of the 8 meals only the Pizza and a Turkey wrap were edible. The Chicken strips were so overcooked they crumbled,Chilli dogs were dry and shriveled up, Burger was burnt on the outside but raw in the center and the Southwest salad was wilted like it had been under the warming lights while the rest was being cooked. Man, I really want to say Hot Rods has improved since the announcement of new management. We went 2 years ago and it was terrible. We went 2 months ago and it wasn't too bad. I had a smoked chicken wings and nacho combo that wasn't bad. But then some friends want to try it so we went. I gave them the entire Hotrods story and about why it has such low ratings but said the last time we were there it wasn't bad at all. Well we ate there last week and the service was good, our food did take a while to get to us though. I had a meat lovers Calzone, and at first it was really good, nicely cooked, flaky, buttery dough some strips of sausage and pepperoni and cheese, but as I got towards the middle it was cold and doughy. Now I told them about this and they went and put it back in the oven. but Here's the thing... I can go into any Denny's/IHOP/Shari's/Village Inn in the country and receive a consistent meal quickly. They can cook it right, it will be warm, and it will taste decent. Hotrods can not accomplish this task. They have gotten rid of the Carolina BBQ, Gyros and other problematic things on their menu, but still can't manage to make sure something is heated all the way through. They are down to fried finger foods, salads, nachos, sandwiches, and calzones/pizza. Now my wife said Nachos were "okay". Our friends had a patty melt and a swiss mushroom burger and they were okay. I don't know what Hotrods can do at this point to save themselves. Hell, hire the line cooks from Village Inn on 22nd or IHOP on Pantano. I just don't understand how you can have such a stripped down menu and still not get it right after hiring management from restaurants and places that are much higher caliber than Village Inn. read more

The food was wonderful the service however was not the best. Our waitress took 15 minutes to bring us water. The restaurant wasn't busy there were maybe 5 people in there and three servers. It was very disappointing. I have been stationed here 8 years and began coming since the day it opened even under new ownership but that experience made me not return. Service was horrible as well....only 3 tables occupied, on a Friday night, and drinks can't be refilled without asking. SLOW doesn't describe how inefficient the service was. Can't imagine what they'd do if they actually got busy. If you are looking for a great alternative to a traditional restaurant, this is definitely(zero doubt), not it.
