We used Houda's for the first time today. Saying I was impressed with their work and breadth of knowledge is an understatement. My husband's car needed new break pads and rotors. They quoted $300, which is more than $200/$300 cheaper than other estimates we received. Not only did they replace the breaks, but they also topped off the oil and fixed one of the tires for free (we were told by another mechanic the tire was irreparable - coincidentally the mechanic also sold tires). I suppose after having my bacon saved by Houda's three times already, this most recent one deserves a review. Let me start by saying I don't live in Sterling, but I drive through there from time to time as most people in the area do. A friend of mine has an office over nearby and the first time I had a car problem in the area, he suggested I take it to Houda's. His recommendation was very strong. Keep in mind, I know NOTHING about cars so I always feel somewhat nervous about going to an unfamiliar mechanic. My first repair was less than $25. It was a minor thing, a grounding wire if I recall correctly. The point is, they could have said almost anything and I would never have known the difference. Fast forward to a second time when my son's car broke down in Reston. He called me wondering about getting it towed all the way back to Lovettsville, but I remembered Houda's Motors and they saved the day again with a reasonable repair. Then just the other day, my wife was up by Dulles with our beater Mountaineer. The brakes started to go. When she put fluid in it, they still didn't improve I knew it was time to get it to Houda's. Fortunately, she was close enough (and had enough brakes left) to get the car there safely where it was repaired by the next day. Again, the price was more than reasonable. She enjoyed sitting and talking to Lisa while I drove over to pick her up. The whole experience is comfortable and positive. Particularly when you consider most car problems are anything but that. They are very honest (I know that is cliche to say but it is very true with Rick) and have saved me thousands of dollars in services and have been nothing short of wonderful. Do not take your car anywhere else. My husband and I were having brake trouble and were told by another mechanic it would be $1,800 to fix. We were planning to donate the car the next day but happened to be having dinner with friends who recommended Houda's Motors. They live In Arlington but say they gladly make the drive when they need car assistance because Houda's is so great. On a whim we took it in the next day. They diagnosed the trouble in about 2 minutes, told us it wasn't a big deal, repaired it the same day, and even gave us free advice on an easy and cheap way to extend the life of electric windows all for $233. I took about 15 of their business cards and have handed them out to my family and friends. Trust me, this place is totally worth it! Customer service is terrific too! Great service. Lisa is especially helpful and knowledgeable over the phone helping you figure out what is going on and getting an accurate quote for you.. I've used them for years. I would give them 5 stars except it is a bit inconvenient for me to leave a car there since it is out of the way. Don't expect a fancy waiting area or anything, this is a working shop in an industrial park. They set me up with a new timing belt and water pump on my truck for 1/3 the cost of goodyear or dealership and had it done in a day. They are usually busy but I never had to wait more than a few days to get an appointment. I also feel total comfortable sending my wife there to get work done on her care knowing they won't try to take advantage of her, they run a totally standup operation and never try to upsell you on unnecessary work. read more

I hesitate writing a top review because it will be even harder for Rick and Lisa to work us in! They are awesomely awesome. They have kept our total of four Eurovans, a Honda, and a Volvo up and running such that we topped 200K miles on the Volvo and nearly that on two Eurovans. The others are humming along. They diagnose the problem precisely almost every time, know or make really good guesses at what it will take to fix, and then get the job done when they say they will. They don't promise what they can't deliver, so sometimes you have to wait a couple of days. We generally schedule work when we only need one car or are out of town. They're fine with us buying parts from Europarts for them to install, and identifying what we need for that. They explain things so you can understand them. Girls and boys and others all get full respect! They are totally honest. I don't think I've ever met a service provider with greater integrity. If I could give them 10 out of 5, I would. BTW, I'm the "wife" side of a couple where I'm generally in charge of interior fixes and "husband" is in charge of exterior, including cars. He's the one that takes our rides to Houda's and would agree with everything I've said. (PS: I do electrical fixes, he's in charge of plumbing, I do carpentry, he does insulation, I do landscaping, he does mowing/gutters, etc.; so this division isn't a gender stereotype thing...:-) Plus, I maintained my own VW Squareback back in the day. The "invisible car:" Everything in plain sight made it easy for me to learn a thing or two about engines. Until now, I've exclusively been a passive Yelp user. But my experience here compelled me to do my first review. After doing 60K service at another shop, they recommended that I change out all of my brakes - pads and rotors - because the pads were "marginal" and the rotors "were likely warped and would prematurely wear down new pads". That was going to be a $600 job. I didn't bite. I came to them (after seeing the other positive reviews on Yelp) to get a second opinion. I willed myself to look past the semi-secluded location and their tiny hole-in-the-wall shop and trust the Yelp recommendation. The main guy - Rick, I think - said that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my brakes. Even the pads were comfortably in the normal thickness range, not "marginal" as the other shop said. He also looked at my clutch (it was making a ringing noise) and said that the release bearing was probably low on grease, so he shot a bunch of lubricant in the casing to see if that would help it. The next thing would be to take apart the transmission - a huge/expensive undertaking - but he found no need to do that because it was otherwise fine. I was surprised and relieved at his straightforwardness. But the kicker was the bill - he charged just $25 for the labor. That's it. I was floored. I would have gladly paid him three times that for just taking a look - I figured it was at least an hour to get the car up, muck around, and do the lubricant. Just the time he spent explaining his findings to me was probably worth $25 according to other shops' labor rates. Thanks, Houda's Motors, for being incredibly honest. They knew that another shop had told me to get my brakes changed, and if they had said the same, I would have gotten it done. Definitely going back there. It's a shame they don't do tires. read more

I use Houda's Motors in Sterling for work I don't want to or can't do myself on my 1986 Alfa Romeo Spider. I would not trust the car (which has its quirks) with anyone else. As others have said, they are very honest and will not do unnecessary work. Their prices are very reasonable for this area (occasionally I have to ask "Are you sure that's enough?") and their work has been good. Rick and Leeza are genuinely nice people also. read more
