I'm a woman living alone and the number of horror stories I've heard about mechanics trying to rip off women is insane. A former roommate recommended Chandler because when she had to get car work done, she got a friends dad (mechanic) to tell her how much the work should cost. She then called around to ask for quotes, and Chandler were the only ones who didn't try to rip her off. They're incredibly helpful and straightforward when I take my car in for inspections as such. Last night, I turned on our RV for the first time in weeks and it was making weird loud noises. I freaked out because I had a trip planned starting tomorrow! I Facebook messaged the company at 8:30PM and got a response! He told me to call Craig in the morning. I called at 7AM and told Craig that it may be the power steering. I am not sure about these guys either. One the one hand they did do a fabulous job on my 1974 Cadillac Eldorado, which is now running better than it ever has in the almost 10 years I have owned it on the other hand: - the price turned out to be more than 5 times their initial estimate - they bit off more than they could chew - they were not too proactive in calling me up in telling me what went wrong - the price estimate went up 3 or 4 times in the week or 10 days they had my car - when the price was at 2.5 times the original estimate and I was panicking they said: " well, if you don't want us to do the work, remember the engine is out of your car now, it's not driveable, so you'll have to arrange a tow truck to come and get it" At the time I was just happy to get my car back and to have it running better - but when i tell this story to friends they all tell me I got ripped off. They did do a lot of work, the did need to take the engine out, and they were correcting some crappy work that had been done years ago by someone else - but the whole experience was pretty dreadful. That's one of - no - the only - painful part of owning an old car - if you can't fixc it yourself you have to find somewhere you can really trust - almost 6 years in DC now and I still have not found that place. read more

I got my safety and emissions inspection done here. They did not even check the tire pressure. When I got the car back, the tire pressure warning light was on and my tire blew while driving to work later that day. I was considering taking them to court for negligence but when I spoke with the owner of the shop, he went on a rant a told me that he's been to court five times and never lost a case against a customer. Would definitely not recommend anyone to go here. Also they came up with all sorts issues for my car before they would pass the safety inspection. Do not use these guys for anything. They did a good job replacing the starting in my car. This issue came up when the did the VA safety inspection. They made up a bunch of items to reject the car yet all those items were false findings. Basically they were going to charge me about 900 to get the car safe when all we needed was a muffler. DO NOT USE THESE GUYS! So after I got the car home I found that they had damaged the rear bumper. I asked them about fixing it since they caused the damage. They did not take responsibility for this accident. Every needs to steer clear of these guys. They lie and cheat and the consumers have to foot the bill. read more

No good customer service and they are liars. They will tell you that a part needs to be replaced and fix even it is not. And if you are a person who trust and let them do the work then they will charge you without doing anything on it because there is nothing wrong with your car. One example I just had an inspection and they rejected it because they say the brakes need to be replaced. I know the brakes are less than a year old and I use the car all the time and know there is no problem with the brakes so they fail me for the inspection thinking my wife would just say yes replace it just to pass the inspection. But i took the car and had the inspection in Koons Toyota a reputable dealer and service. They said there is nothing wrong with brakes and wipers which chandler and sons noted for rejection. CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!! A while back, I started to hear the brakes squeal on my Altima, so I swung by here to get an idea of how much I'd be looking to spend on a brake job ( I have a car service shop that I regularly go to, but I had just noticed the noise as I was pulling into the 7-11 next door). I gave the guy behind the service counter the make, model, and year of my car and, without even looking at my car, he quoted me $700-$800!!!!!! My jaw dropped and I started laughing. I said, "Excuse me?" and he stated that the price included all four rotors, pads, and labor. I told him I think I only needed front pads and that's it. After telling me that I should have the rotors done when the pads are replaced (bullsh*t), the price dropped to just over $200 for the front brakes. I then asked what if I brought in pads that I purchased & the price came down to $144. Long story short: I went to my guy ( which I should've done in the first place), with pads that I'd purchased at Pep Boys, and got them put on for $55. I loathed to even give this place one star, but I had to put something there in order to write this review. read more

I was stuck in Herndon for an hour so decided to pop in here for my safety inspection even though I knew nothing about them, big mistake. They were courteous in the office but when the mechanic came out I learned my vehicle had failed because the amber coating on 2 turn signal bulbs was 'starting' to flake off and 1 license plate bulb was out. The cost would be $100 to replace these bulbs (2 of which still worked) and 1.2 hours to complete. I know nothing about cars but I opted to buy bulbs at Advanced Auto ($10), watch a 5 minute youtube video and switch them out myself in 20 minutes. What a racket over there. Definitely feel like they saw the single out-of-town woman and tried to advantage of me. read more

Hit or miss results with this shop. Customer service is good from the line level employees but the Chandlers' in charge need to re-evaluate how they treat their employees and customers. I have a 1995 Accord commuter car and even though I live in Gainesville now, I still let Chandler & Sons take care of. It has 225K miles and they keep it going strong. I've found them to be very reasonable and fair. If you had a bad experience, call or see Mike Chandler. I am sure he would help resolve any issue you may have. My fault, I guess. I checked on Yelp and saw the bad reviews. Shouldn't have gone. I'll let you be the judge. Show up with a faulty headlight switch. They checked the car and told me they will order the parts. They also told me I needed new front breaks ($400 parts & labor), cleaning the battery ends ($33) and the third stop light on the back door ($27.63) I decided to only fix the faulty headlight switch. Told me to go back a few days later. I go on a Saturday and leave the car only to receive a call an hour later saying they got the wrong part. Had to schedule new appointment. In the meantime I go to Advance Auto Parts on Elden St. in Herndon to buy the third light (back door) I trusted them so I didn't check if it was actually broken. The manager from Advance came out to help me change it and.... the light was working perfectly fine. Yep. Either it got magically fixed on it's own or they were trying to charge me $27.63 for nothing. At that point I knew I should have trusted the bad reviews on Yelp and shouldn't have gone there. I'll start with stating, I like going to local Auto-Mechanics. I usually find the small mom & pop type place more fun to work with, more knowledgeable, and will give better advice. However, I don't think I have ever been to an auto mechanic who tried more blatantly to rip me off. I dropped my car off to have a brake light warning light looked at and to complete the state inspection. After a day of reviewing my truck, I was told that I had about 1400 dollars worth or repairs that would prevent me from passing the state safety inspection. The list of work includes; - New Parking Brake Pads - Rear Rotors - Front Rotors (told I had maybe a month or two left but should be replaced) - Wheel Bearings Replaced on the Front Axle (left and right) - Right Side Front Head Light Housing (not the bulb, the entire housing) I was told the wheel bearings were shot and were causing the wheels to wobble back and forth. I was also told that my head lights couldn't be "adjusted" because the plastic tabs holding the light in the housing was broken and the bulb was "flapping" around. The following morning, I took it to another shop and re-paid for another state inspection. Out of the list above, the new shop agreed that the front wheels were "loose" but it was being caused by Tie-Rods and not the bearings. The bearings were fine. They also agreed the parking brake was loose, but charged 40 bucks to tighten the brakes and not replace everything. Otherwise, the Brakes and my lights were 100% fine. I also personally checked the front head light and found NOTHING broken. (This is the worse offense in my opinion) - This was an obvious lie.. Take this information as you will, as far as I'm concerned I will never go back read more

We have an older GMC Envoy that we were sure we were either going to have to put a lot of work (and money) into or sell. We were referred to Chandler & Son's by a few acquaintances. We took it in and they were honest about that work that needed to be done. We decided to have it done and they stayed exactly to their quote (even when they realized they needed another part!). Our truck is running perfectly again and better yet, out 16 year old will get a few years of use out of it! Thank you again. It must be tough to run a garage and get a decent review. I read the other reviews and was rolling my eyes. My wife and I have been taking our cars to Chandler's for twenty years. We wouldn't do that if we didn't believe they are aboveboard. No, they are not the cheapest place around, but their repairs are consistently done correctly. The one and only time a recently replaced part failed, they honored their warranty without excuses and performed the repair promptly for free. I really appreciate this, having dealt with dealers and other garages who have pulled all kinds of shady shenanigans. The service writers are friendly and helpful and thorough. Chandler's does not over-commit. Some places will tell you the end of today and then you're mad because the car isn't done. I have found that they will tell you the truth about when the car will be ready and then deliver on it. Their state inspection is by the book. Don't expect them to be a Mr. Nice Guy and overlook stuff, but then again, I never have found them failing stuff to pad the repair tab, either. Overall, it is a good establishment that repairs cars correctly. read more

I'm still looking for a place to get the cars serviced without having to wait for what seems like a bit too long and without wondering if I'm being charged a fair price. The seating area was nice in a 1970s sort of way and the parking out front (or out to the side) is a bit tight. Lots of vehicles squeezed-in, but that's perhaps a good sign they're busy. This shop ripped me off. Went in for a leaking AC and stalling issue. They kept replacing parts for the stalling issue. I went through 4 parts and every time I would drive off of the lot my car would stall. Each time the owner assured me that the next part was going to fix the issue but that never happened. I finally got fed up and after the fourth part and I decided that this shop was too incompetent to fix my car and called a tow truck immediately to get it towed. I got the car towed to another shop and they fixed my issue and only charged me around $150 total and none of the parts Chandler replaced turned out to be the issue. And regarding the AC, this shop failed at fixing that as well. They assured me there was no leak, however, in less than a day the AC stopped working. Again, the other shop diagnosed this issue and told me there was a leak and actually showed me the marks left by the dye that showed the exact location of the leak. This shop is by far the worst business I have ever dealt with. I complained and got very angry at the owner but he refused to admit his mistake and showed no respect or responsibility for his actions. He doesn't have a clue about customer service. Just read his responses to customers who have given him negative reviews below and you will see how high this guys arrogance is a the complete disregard he has for his customers when he messes up and we call him out. The owner is a dishonest cheat and lacks integrity. I would never recommend this shop to anyone. The tow truck driver who towed my car told me that this guy doesn't even spare the elderly. He tricks them and rips them off. What a dishonest business, and complete shame this Chandler and Sons is. He stole $1200 of my hard earned money. Shame on you. P.S. These are honest people and I would recommend them. I came to know this business who took his car here after visiting another shop.
