This joint is in the hotel that I stay at. I have not been there in months and the barman remembered me, what I drank, and reached across the bar and said "welcome back". What can I say? I like that. The wife and I sat at the bar area for some drinks and a few bites on a week night. The calamari and the wings were flavorful which came with a variety of dipping sauces. Because we chose to sit at one of the smaller booths near the bar area, we could not easily put in our drink and food orders. But the gentleman tending that evening didn't mind it all and rendered exceptional service. I wanted the wine flights and he explained it well and even offered some recommendations. This Houlihan's is connected to the hotel next door, but it doesn't feel chintzy or downgraded because of that. The layout is nice, and I like the wooden furniture. The service is typically pretty good and attentive, though some waitstaff can get a little insistent on selling you menu items. This is a good place to for a lunch during the workweek, since service is fast and usually on point. The food quality is actually good, and it looks like the cooks in the back actually care a bit about how their food looks and tastes. I'm basing this off of the lower-priced items, since I wouldn't go to Houlihan's to order steaks or seafood per se (though their calamari is not bad). If you're looking for modern American fare, this place is not too bad. Granted, it's a chain, so its menu options will be slightly generic, but it's a general crowd-pleaser. read more

Against my better judgement but at my friends insistence, I went to to this place for the second time. I ordered the fish and chips. The first bite of the fish tasted like ammonia. There was some sort of tasteless slaw on the plate, green beans and fries. I sent the fish back. The very limited menu and lack of confidence in the chef left me with little choice but to get the French onion soup. Once again bad choice. The bas tasted canned and the bread in the bottom of the bowl was brown. Never again. Thera was three people in the place on a Sunday at lunch time. It should have been reason to leave then. I've been to Houlihan's countless times, but visited yesterday for the first time in a little over a year. My mom used to get Restaurant.com deals to the place, and if you join their mailing list, they always send out free entrees or appetizers, so we'd end up here quite often. It was our go-to, too-lazy-to-make-dinner-tonight kind of restaurant. The food at Houlihan's isn't bad but I'm mostly bored by its menu. I'm the kind of person who will rarely order the same dish twice at a restaurant, but I don't find the items on the menu particularly appealing and will usually go for the same things. The best part of Houlihan's menu is probably its appetizers, which makes sense because it doubles as a bar as well. Yesterday I went with my parents (my mom had a free entrée coupon from an email) and we ordered the Thai grilled chicken and the full rack of ribs. The Thai grilled chicken was what you expected it to be--grilled chicken with Asian inspired flavors and pineapple fried rice--nothing particularly exciting but the soy glaze that came on the side was actually pretty tasty. The ribs were slathered in a sweet and sticky barbeque sauce, but also pretty much what you'd expect barbeque ribs to be like too. Both meats were cooked well, though--very tender, juicy, and flavorful. The entrées came with a soup or salad so we ordered the house salad and the Tuscan white bean salad. I definitely don't recommend the house salad. With its slightly wilted shredded romaine, frozen corn, generic shredded cheese, and crumbled bacon, it's definitely something you can throw together yourself at home. The Tuscan white bean salad, on the other hand, is amazing and I haven't seen anything like it before. It's a layered tower with dressed greens, perfectly seasoned sweet and savory tomatoes, topped with creamy white beans, surrounded by sweet and perfectly acidic balsamic vinegar, and served with two crunchy, garlicky croutons. The burger is usually my go to order here (you can never really go wrong with a burger in general). Other things that are good are the spinach dip, calamari, power greens salad, and meat loaf. Service is fine--the restaurant is usually pretty empty, since it's attached to a hotel. It feels like a kind of restaurant that should serve bread to start, but they don't, which is disappointing. Overall, Houlihan's is a very OK experience. I don't think I would ever come here if I didn't have some kind of coupon, however. read more

What a great place for Happy Hour. I came to wind down after a long day, and they provided the perfect remedy. The house wines were only $3.50 a glass- until 8 PM I believe. I got really excited when I heard that they had Moscato!! You must try it. :) They had a good selection on Apps for HH as well. I remember seeing calamari, spinach dip, wings and more. I was a little too hungry for just apps so I ventured to the entrees menu. I got the black angus burger and it was less than $10! Good meal if you don't want anything too pricey! read more

I have been to Houlihan's about 3 times. The first time I had chicken nachos that were so good I copied the basic recipe at home - everyone loves them. The second time I had the breakfast buffet. Pancakes a little dry,but otherwise pretty good selection and food was delicious. Now my third time at Houlihan's was not so good. Sitting in the bar area it took what seemed like forever for someone to come and take my order. I got bottle water and chicken quesadilla. Pretty good, but I have had better many times before. Here's the problem. About 3-4 hours later I was very sick and threw up. I am guessing it was the quesadilla. I didn't really eat at all the next day and am not sure if I will ever go to Houlihan's again. read more

Hanging off the side of a hotel is usually a dead give away that a restaurant is going to be total garbage - they basically have a captive audience or rotating chuds that are going to stop in when they roll through town, and since they are just visiting, they don't have time to tell anyone that a restaurant was awful - and they don't know anyone in the area to warn them, people keep shuffling through the doors. Usually, these parasitic growths just subsist like this, without even bothering to make anything good. Usually. Houlihans shirks the rule a bit. The food is good, it's very clean and has some nice furniture inside, and the menu is pretty inventive....all of the dishes I tried weren't terrible. Happy Hour was excellent - reasonable prices for large drinks. I may or may not be back here - depending on how I travel - but if you are staying nearby, you don't have to worry about getting horribly shafted at another shitty hotel restaurant if you eat here. read more

We've been twice now, the food is quite salty for me. I can see the potential but it misses the mark. It's twice now that the food comes out lukewarm. Tomato bisque- very acidic, the fried cheese was a neat touch, but very big to eat French Onion soup- we thought it was tasty Entree salads- nothing too crazy, sometimes the salad looks sad to me, not quite wilted but almost there Ribs- would have been tastier warm, the entire plate was barely warm Chicken parmesan- the pasta is drowned in a cheese sauce, it definitely is an artery clogging meal Pot roast mac and cheese- I don't like beer that much, and this was not the meal for me. I can't remember what other dish we got but it was fish, the only one that wasn't too bad. I wish this place wasn't so salty and the food was still warm. I work about a mile from Houlihan's in Herndon. I love eating here when I decide to go out to lunch. The food is always hot, fresh and tasty. The wait staff is always on top of their game. The management is extremely attentive and will always make sure that your dining experience is A-OK. I highly recommend Houlihan's for a bite to eat if you are in the Herndon area. I am living in this hotel for work and have had just about everything on the menu twice. LOVE the food for the price but the service is abysmal on a level that i previously could never have imagined. The bartenders and servers are the rudest, most inept humans imaginable (except the 2 asian servers), who can only be relied upon for only one single thing - SCREWING UP YOUR ORDER. I order room service nearly every night and it has never been delivered even remotely correct or on time. I once ordered the chicken wrap and fish tacos, only to be given fish & chips and thai grilled chicken, with no sides. After asking politely for the order to be corrected, I was again brought something completely different and told they didn't have what I originally ordered. This mess took an hour and a half, and the server then handed me bill for $70. My inquiring as to the reason i was charged for 4 meals i didn't want and wasn't going to eat, the server turned away indignantly and disappeared. I later found the entire amount charged to my room. Yet another time I received a glass of tea in a filthy glass that looked like it came straight from the bus tub. Another time, I waited for 35 minutes on a 30 minute lunch break for a plain old SALAD and had to go back to work without eating. Another time, I walked into the bar and found it covered in dirty glasses stacked 3 and 4 high, allowing exactly zero people to sit at the bar and the stench of leftover alcohol making the bar, restaurant, and entire lobby smell similar to 2-cycle engine fuel. Also, I'm convinced the restaurant's truly useless staff will eventually lead to the hotel's infestation by rats and roaches, because leaving your room service tray in the hallway for pickup requires a minimum of 48 hours to have the desired effect. I once witnessed the agonizingly slow, disgusting process of my leftover tomato becoming compost in the hallway over the course of 72 hours as i came and went from my hotel room, my tray seemingly invisible to anyone charged with its removal. I finally took it down to the restaurant myself. If you order room service or takeout, good luck getting anyone on the phone in less than 20 rings...BUT THE FOOD IS GREAT! ...which is the only reason it gets 2 stars. NOTE: DESPITE WHAT THE "E-COMMERCE MANAGER" PROMISED BELOW, I WAS NEVER CONTACTED BY THE MANAGER EVEN THOUGH I LIVED IN THE HOTEL FOR ANOTHER MONTH AFTER THIS REVIEW. read more

I've been here a few times now and It's pretty standard American food. Not saying that's bad but don't look for anything too fancy. I usually stick with my usual the Brentwood Chicken Sandwich which is amazing with extra honey mustard. They don't skimp on the bacon or toppings. If you're looking for an amazing appetizer go with the chicken nachos, they're massive and will fill you up. I was in for the breakfast buffet Sunday morning at 10am, brought some guests from out of town thinking the food would be in the likes of their dinner, BUT it wasn't. The breakfast buffet line up. You get in line and open up the buffet dishes... Their eggs were a mix between done and undone, dry, and smelly. Next, their bacon were hard and old. Their sausage were nasty, you chew and chew, hoping you can just swallow and make it go away so you wouldn't have to spit it back up. Now to the pancakes...rubber, hard and dry, just rubber. They have danish, yogurt, milk, cereal, bagels, bread, and fruit. Their danish were chewy as well. Yoplait yogurt, can't go bad. We had yogurt and bananas and coffee. We didn't want to go back for anymore food. I wouldn't want to feed my dog this type of food! So if you're in the area, stay clear of their breakfast. It's just crazy~ they should throw it all away and not serve breakfast. Our bill came to about $70 for yogurt and bananas. I wouldn't touch the buffet with a ten foot pole. read more

LOVE, LOVE this spot!! Let's start with the bar, Chuck and the entire bar staff! If anyone has ever watched the show Cheers, this spot is "Cheers Bar" in VA! They make you feel welcomed right away, the drinks are amazing and you never want to leave, lol. I hope Chuck and his staff never leaves because if he does, Houlihans would lose a lot of patrons. I went there with my 11 year old daughter on 10/25 at about 7:50 PM. It took about 5 minutes to get seated (there was no line). After being seated, no waiter came to take our order after being seated for more than 10 minutes. My daughter was really hungry so I could not wait and decided to leave. On our way out, I approached a man that appeared to be a manager. I asked him, "are you the manager?" He said "yes". I told him that we were leaving because no one came to take our order. To my surprise, he completely ignored me and went back to doing whatever he was doing. I can understand the waiters were busy. But managment that does not acknowledge mistakes, does not assign adequate staff to serve its customers will loose one customer at a time. I may be the 1st one of many. It was around 3pm and I was looking for some lunch and a brew. This place didn't get the best reviews, but it said they had good soup. I chose the lunch special. It came with a bowl of soup and 2 sliders for 10 bucks. I knew the soup would be good and how bad can a slider be? Well, apparently, they can be disgustingly bad. I got a pulled pork and a pot roast slider. The pot roast had no taste at all. It didn't look or taste like pot roast. The pulled pork was drenched in a disgusting sauce that tasted like spicey rancid ketchup. I'm still trying to get the taste out of my mouth. I got the baked potato soup, which is one of my favorites. It tasted like very thick flour water. Again, no flavor. They put those little crunchy fake bacon bits on top, which illustrates their commitment to quality. Even Wendy's uses real bacon. I could not eat the soup. The manager comped the meal and the beer, but I was hungry so getting a free beer and a bad slider for free was not much of a consolation prize. The one redeeming value was the bartender. She was a very sweet Asian lady. She took good care of me and I gave her a nice tip even though she kept refusing to take it. There is no excuse for a restaurant serving food this bad. Revisited after a year and a half. I had the meat loaf and my lovely wife ate the sea scallops--both served with mashers. My meat loaf came with extraordinarily prepared asparagus. I went to this restaurant because I was staying at the attached Crowne Plaza. For breakfast there is a buffet with your typical hot items. On weekdays only there is a omelet and waffle bar, which is really nice. Unfortunately, not present on weekends. The menu is pretty basic. Food is relatively bland. I had the scallop risotto. Scallops were rubbery and risotto gummy. On another occasion, I had a burger that was relatively bland. Service is also absurdly slow.
