We ate here for a special occasion, and I think the standout element of this restaurant is the service. They are so attentive and cater to your every need. The decor is reminiscent of the 60s (although the inside has definitely been renovated in the last few years, it's just made to look retro), and this restaurant has indeed been open for 60+ years, so that's a true testament to the winning combo of great service and good food. We ordered a couple of steaks, and they were really delicious, and come with a side salad or vegetables,potatoes and something that tastes like onion rings. Overall, we would come back for another special event! In the words of my husband: "this is the best service in Toronto! It was a great experience." This place is confusing. It looks like a cheesy 80s westernized chinese style restaurant. Not a single Asian customer. This restaurant is clearly geared for westerns who want their version or chinese food. That being said, I must say the rib eye and bone-in rib eye are among the best in Toronto! It's also reasonably priced relative to top end steak houses. Those who complain about the price being high are likely those who are used to only going to the Keg. Compared to the true top end steakhouses in Toronto the steaks here are inexpensive. Wine is also reasonable as well The steak was well charred on the outside and a nice medium rare on the inside. These guys know what they are doing. Also has the fried shrimp appetizer and spare rib appetizer. Those are mediocre and no big deal. I'll be back just for the steak and wine. Service was very good. Mediocre steak and Chinese food restaurant located in the Forest Hill area. House of Chan is a long standing establishment and an interesting spot indeed. Not a place I'll be visiting much (or again any time soon) FOOD - Steak was a nice cut and cooked perfectly. Mediocre Chinese food, something you'd find at a lower end chinese restaurant. Extremely confused when they asked if wanted fresh vegetables and we were literally served a plate of raw veggies RESTAURANT - Renovations although new are dated in style. Gives you a 90s Chinese restaurant feel. SERVICE - Excellent service. Old school Chinese staff but very professional and attentive. VALUE - A bit perplexed how they are able to charge these huge prices for the food they served. For example, the wonton soup, something similar to what you find at a Chinese food court was 6-7$, the mushrooms were almost $15. TLDR - Come for the steak and the services. The true rating is 3.5 stars, but I round it up, up and up because it is an institution. House of Chan has been in business for 60 years. We came here to celebrate a birthday, as well as to patronize a well known institution, after so many restaurants of long history have closed this year due to rent increases. Our friend recommended the steaks of House of Chan, so sirloin steak and rib eye steak were what we ordered. I had to admit that I experienced price tag shocks at this point. Yet the steaks redeemed themselves. The steaks were good - good cut, tender, well aged, nicely seasoned. The medium rib eye steak was more like a rare; they replaced it with a new steak at no cost. The sides that came along were deep fried onions, fried sliced potatoes and sliced raw vegetables. I wasn't a fan of any of these. The services were polite, professional, efficient and effective. It surpassed my expectation. True, for the size and the cut of the steak, and the dated decor, the meal was super pricey to me. But once I took the rent costs of Yonge and Eglinton into consideration, and the fact that it was a full house on a weekday evening, meaning the customers in nearby neighbourhood thought it was an acceptable price level, and that it has stayed in business for decades, I wouldn't second-guess their pricing strategy. We went for a dinner with friends (6 adults) and ordered a porter house, ribeye, lobster done 2 ways (steamed and chinese style with ginger and scallion) with side salads to share as a family style meal. The steaks were cooked and seasoned well and the lobsters were well prepared. With a couple of decent bottles of wine and a few cocktails, the bill was $330 per couple. Was the food and the experience worth the money? Well, it wasn't $330 per couple worth it in my opinion. $250 maybe. :) But we were in such good company, the night was fun. The place has that old school kitsch feel, if you like that sort of thing. Would I come back to H of C? I wouldn't go out of my way to come in as the parking and the hassle of getting here is cumbersome but if I happen to be in the area, I would drop by for a cocktail at the bar. read more

Chan has been a mainstay in the Forest Hill Jewish community for decades...and even though it's now moved eastbound to this smaller location, the restaurant has retained the original Chan charm of years passed. Start by lingering over a cocktail at the stool-less bar... Once seated (preferably at a booth), munch away on those addictive crispy noodles with hoisin sauce and spicy mustard. Classic Chan. Continue with a round of egg rolls, loaded with more hoisin and spicy mustard :) For dinner, share a steak, sliced, or order your own (it comes with a salad...ask them to chop it for you or you'll be served whole veggies) and also try those glorious bacon-wrapped shrimp and some chicken chow mein. Ribs are also a good bet, as is the lobster. This is a midtown institution, perhaps known more for its $$$$ steak than Chinese food, and it has that dark, retro atmosphere that is inimitably Chan. Service was great! Couldn't say that about the food. The food is ok but definitely overpriced, think it's because of the area but I came here off of the reviews. Don't like leaving not so great reviews but spending $90 ish plus for 3 dishes with quality that I could have got from a takeout spot I really thought it would be more..should have gone to mandarin if I knew the quality would be like this (no offence to mandarin) I'm simply comparing price with quality and for me I've had better, much better. 3/5 and that got bumped based on the great service nonetheless. read more

House of Chan is notorious for the juxtaposition of having great steaks and seafood while eating chinese food. Service is very attentive though the restaurant gets more crowded around 6pm. Chow Mein with plum sauce and mustard was brought to the table right away. The steaks are cooked to perfection under the salamander/broiler. However, the super charred nature of the steak is not my favourite. The steamed lobsters are a hearty helping but the melted butter is more like brown butter with a bit of nutty bitterness at the end which I find not suitable for the lobster. The ribs taste like Char Siu which I really like because I love Char Siu. The accompaniments: green salad and veggies are very tasty. Overall, I would return as it was an interesting experience and maybe order more from the Chinese side of the menu next time. read more

It's impossible to have a bad meal here. The lobsters....the steak..... the potatoes ...... the fried noodles....the bacon wrapped shrimp- THE LIST GOES ON AND ON!!!! We got $63.00 worth of take out today which was 3 tiny egg rolls, 8 or 9 chicken balls, fried rice and something which was suppose to be beef chowmein. This meal was so disappointing! All was tasteless at best. The egg rolls must have been factory made. The honey garlic chicken came with a separate black jam like substance. There was wasabi but I have no idea why. This place is special, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. There's nothing like the House of Chan (read: The Chan) and, I doubt there will ever be anything like it. From the second you hoist open the heavyweight green door, you feel like you've entered your second home (house) of Chan. Staff are friendly, mirrors are complimentary, and the bar is lively and exciting. Oh, what a place! Over the years, me, my family and I have shared some incredible memories at the Chan. We've tried it all. Dish nights. Steak nights. Dish AND Steak nights. Martinis. Wine. We've over-indulged in the crispy wonton noodles, and we haven't had enough of the Butterfly Shrimp. Overall, not impressed - especially for the price. There seems to be two schools of thoughts on this restaurant: 1) steaks and lobsters = awesome 2) Chinese food, not so much. I have to agree on 2. I got chicken tao (small portion, underwhelming taste), special fried rice (decent portion, no taste - what makes it worth the extra $$$ over regular fried rice?), mixed vegetables (decent portion, decent taste) and a wonton soup (best choice of the whole order despite meat being over cooked and under seasoned). Paid $60 with tip for this. Yet, small portions. Best item of the entire order? The free horseradish ginger sauce. That I can get behind. Would I takeout again? On Sunday July 28 me and two other friends decided to pick up an order and we did not place the order because the person we picked it up for lives in that area and we live in the suburbs. We did not know the cost but at that time it was not important we just wanted to spend a great evening with great friends and amazing food. Paying the bill we were shocked the total amount for seven dishes was $187.00 When we arrived at out destination and started to plate the dishes I could not believe my eyes. There was practically no food the orders were so small? We ordered lemon chicken and it was horrible. Little small pieces of soft not crispy chicken which we expected (and not a great deal very small portions. We had chicken chow mien, lettuce wraps with filling (very bland) shrimp dish not very much at all. (all the dishes were so small), beef and greens(hardly any beef),rice and bbq ribs which I though was great but again very small. This is our first time visiting this restaurant and we would highly recommend it. The flavoured were great but what surprised us was the freshness of the food when it came out. The chicken was tender, juicy and bold with flavour. The beef was cooked to perfection! And the staff were fun and energetic. Considering the high prices, this place is terrible. Very poorly cooked steak and Unpalatable Chinese food dishes. A shadow of its former self. I had eaten here many times over the years and I still don't know why. The steaks are aged waaaay too long and border on being rotten. I strongly question the cleanliness of the kitchen and have been physically ill from eating here. Best thing on the menu is the plain steamed rice and that says a lot. I think this place should take a long look at itself and maybe think about hiring real chefs, learning about healthy food preparation or closing its doors permanently. The Chan is first and foremost an excellent Surf and Turf restaurant; second a dimly lit lounge, with full bar, in the classic American-Chinese style; third a Chinese food restaurant. Hang your expectations on this order of excellence and you will not be disappointed. The steak and lobster never disappoint and your order always comes with salad, fried onions, and potato slices. At time of writing the restaurant has recently moved down the street from its old landmark locale. Fear not: the new location, while a bit smaller, has lost none of the atmosphere, food quality, and friendly service. The decor still looks like the Chinese restaurants in Glengarry Glen Ross and Seinfeld. The Chan is a legendary fixture of the Toronto steakhouse scene and absolutely worth your time and money--even if you can't afford to visit regularly enough to work your own butt groove into the benches. read more

Ordered a beef dish and a shrimp fried rice . Ended up with food poisoning, throwing up projectile vomit, severe stomach pains and heart burn. Went to the emergency at 5 am and spent 5 hours in the hospital . I have never in my life had food poisoning and I generally eat healthy work out daily and rarely get sick . This is the second review I have seen identical to mine so I know it's not an isolated incident . Thanks house of chan for the food poisoning. I hope you eat you own food sometime and experience first hand and maybe clean up your act. Probably time for a health and safety inspection. read more

WOW! Shared a rib eye steak here, KING cut 16 oz for $60+. It was an incredible, amazing piece of meat. Crisp exterior, tender interior and SO much flavor! Amoungst the best I have ever had. Extremely expensive but worth it for the most part. The bland discs of sliced and minute fried potatoes were shameful for the price of this dinner as was the plate of vegetables, which we assumed would be streamed mixed fresh veggies or something, but ended up being huge hunks of raw onion, some raw whole celery stalks and a couple of slices of tomato - again - shameful. We also had a $20 plate of shrimp chop suey. Delicious beyond belief with many huge shrimps and fresh, wonderful vegetables. Cheesy "Chinese" food restaurant decor, very dark but comfortable. A number of people told us how wonderful the steaks were, but they were nothing special, given the high prices - and came back closer to rare than to the medium ordered. The location of the restaurant is the only thing that's been updated since my last visit a few years back. They still serve steak, lobster and Chinese food. We ordered all of the above. The quality of the steak is great, however the cooking method is so-so. The steak is seared and cooked in ultra high heat which makes the outside chewy and almost crispy. It scratches the roof of your mouth if you take too big a bite. I didn't care for this style of cooking on my steak at all, near burnt is not the way to go on a rib steak. The inside was exactly medium rare as requested so that was good. They prepare the lobster the same as any other Chinese restaurant, but they make the sauce very thick. The lobster was cooked perfectly I would say. The only down side is that it's soo expensive. It was at least $10/lb more than at any other seafood restaurant. And it didn't taste $10/lb better. The other Chinese dishes were a hit and miss. Chow mein was so-so, fried rice was ok (nothing special), beef and broccoli was mediocre, and general tso chicken was good. The prices for all these dishes are at least double what you would pay at any other Chinese restaurant. The service here is good. The wait staff are friendly and happy. If I had to take a guess, I would say that the wait staff see these crazy prices and in exchange, provide good service to the customers because they feel bad that they're being ripped off for Chinese food. Overall, I would say the price to quality ratio isn't there. At these prices you can get a steak at a premium steak house (ie. Jacob & Co., Harbour 60, Peter's fine dining) at a better quality and price. Also, the vast amount of Chinese seafood restaurants that exist in the GTA are endless and cheaper. read more

House of Chan was recommended to me by a friend who used to live in Toronto and now the US. We went this past week with another couple to celebrate my wife's recent birthday. Chan's, or my friends recommendation did not let us down. Steaks were recommended, so that's what we had. We ordered the 16 Oz and 12 oz NY strip medium rare and they were Fantastic! Cooked exactly as we asked and had pre cut in slices. Honestly, the steak was as good, or better than any steak we have had anywhere and cooked to perfection for all of us! Although we didn't really have any Chinese dishes, everyone's orders around us looked delicious and the fried won ton, Hussein and mustard sauce that was immediately placed on table was excellent. The waiter and entire staff was outstanding, friendly, efficient, and attentive. I told them it was my wife's birthday and they brought us a complimentary slice of key lime pie which we shared and was delicious. Chan's was a short $8 (app) Uber drive from our hotel near the entertainment district, but well worth the time. The staff made us feel at home from the moment we walked in and it became easy to see why Chan's have become an "institution" for great steaks and Chinese food. Pretty good steaks, haven't tried the Chinese food, but this is a good choice if you don't want to go to make the trek to a steakhouse downtown. If you come by later than evening dinner time, you'll have the place to yourself. Good service, but just understand that this place is a little past it's prime.
