I can't say that this is the best place to eat, but when you've got a hankering for some wings on the cheap.... Well, sure. I ate here for the last time a few nights ago, and while I won't miss the oily food and the dangerous location, I will say that I won't miss it much at all. I did see rats outside of the place, or maybe they were just giant mice. Needless to say, it was only after I had purchased my order. And well, you can't throw away food. I'm sure that the deep frying would have killed any bacteria that would have otherwise collected on it. The inside looks like a bulletproof soup kitchen without a good place to sit. College students and homeless people frequent the area. Well that may sound like a bad place to get food, you have to ask yourself why that would even raise a brow, considering that it looks sketchy as hell to begin with...from the outside...even in the pictures. Awesome place but couple of caveats. It is cash only. Put Mumbo sauce on everything. There chicken wings are legit with mumbo sauce. Also add it as a side sauce for fried rice. I really like this spot! It's cheap and the food is good. The chicken isn't all that great without a sauce. It's a small place so I'll have to order and step outside if they're busy. A buddy and I are on a quest to find the best mumbo sauce in the DMV. This may come as no surprise, but the best mumbo usually comes from the sketchiest Chinese restaurants. So naturally, we ended up at Howard China. The restaurant is...let's say it's well-worn and experienced. It's not a nice interior, with the cashier/kitchen behind a plexiglass wall and a mini revolving door to pass you your food. But let's be honest, you're not coming to Howard China to dine in. Grab your food and go. Unfortunately when we were there, there seemed to only be two employees, so our food took quite a while. I'd like to see a little quicker times from a carryout place. When in Rome, so of course we got fried chicken with mumbo sauce. Fried chicken is hard to screw up, and I'm glad to report that Howard China did not screw it up! Chicken was nice and crispy - well fried! As for the mumbo sauce, I'm a fan. It's the most sweet-and-sour-like mumbo I've encountered so far; it's a little subtle. I can't tell you if Howard China's actually Chinese food is any good, but if you're looking for some chicken and mumbo sauce, this is a good option. read more

Howard China hit the spot when I was looking for a quick bite to eat while on Georgia Ave one afternoon recently. I called in a lunch order for human shrimp and began the block and a half walk to the restaurant. The restaurant looks kinda dingy inside and there were no customers in there, but my order had already been placed so no turning back now! The man behind the counter informed me that they don't take card after I pulled it out which is like being a dinosaur in 2019. Fortunately, I had my spare $20 in my wallet that my mom told me to never leave home without. After hearing the legend of HoCHi, I felt compelled to try their mumbo sauce. This place is for REAL.....REAL GHETTO that is. Not very big, has two tables but pleasant enough. Not as dirty as previously thought. Ordered four wings, fried rice and the Mix....came out to be $6.45. That's a GREAT DEAL by DC standards. The fried rice is standard, nothing to brag home about. The wings were big and juicy, but a bit on the salty side. The mumbo sauce and the mix drink is what balance the flavor though and they did not disappoint. Look, this joint ain't no gourmet Chinese....it's straight up ghetto. Hell, it sells cigarettes! How many Chinese carryout joints you know sell cigarettes?? But it's cheap and it hits the spot. Staple meal for Howard students, especially freshman boys being that it is right down the street from their dorm. Please do not go here expecting to get a gourmet meal. It's a hole in the wall, and no it doesn't look clean...I said it, and YES I still am giving it 4 stars! Customer service sucks!!! Never ate here because it's a horrible place to order from. Called to make an order and from the beginning of the conversation the man I spoke to was so insensitive. I made a simple order of chicken wings and french fries as well as broccoli with garlic sauce. He was rushing me through my order and the guy acted as if it was end of the world when I repeated the order to make sure he got it. He starts cussing under his breath and saying oh my God for no reason. He didn't want to be bothered it seems and as a result I told him to cancel my order. Do you know why this American Chinese joint has a burger on their menu? Because it's dope as hell. This burger easily competes with any fast food joint burger. Plus it's yuuuge.
