My system is a pair of their bookshelves (HB1-MK2) and an STF-1 subwoofer (sadly no longer made by him). The speakers are absolutely articulate and never bright, despite having a horn around the Tweeter. The sub is extremely rhythmic. Not the lowest or the loudest--it's not meant to be-- it's an 8-in down firing model. By the way, it's on a subwoofer isolation platform on a wooden floor. (I'm obsessive about using subwoofer isolation platforms. This thing sounds so smooth when it's sitting on one.) 100% Hsu sound from top to bottom for such a reasonable price. Driven by a modest Onkyo 5.1 amp. Best system I've ever had and it gets used daily for playing both music and movies. I don't think I could get tired of it. I love my Hsu stereo. read more

I was interested in purchasing several of their largest subwoofers. I live locally (less than 10 miles away). I called to make the purchase and was informed that there was no way that I could pickup locally. Instead, it would have to be shipped for $346 dollars. I was interested in HSU due to the positive product reviews and competitive pricing. The added shipping costs nullifies their pricing advantage. I asked if there was any way that I could pick it up at the same location that they would drop it off for their shipper. They said due to COVID19 that wouldn't be possible. I offered to pick it up in the parking lot. Not possible. I am incredibly disappointed. read more

Came to audition their new CCB-8 speakers on a recent trip to LA, as well as hear their older HB-1 speakers that have always gotten very good feedback on the AVS Speakers online forum along with their super-respected subwoofers. Service was rather impersonal and slightly brusque, especially on the part of the older Asian woman who answers the phone---so don't expect the usual butt-kissing, fake-cheery American "service" act. But the upside is that there was ZERO pressure to buy, and I loved that the guy who set us up in the audition room left us alone as long as we wished and didn't mind that we moved speakers around while listening. Also appreciated the fact that they simply use a very run-of-the-mill Onkyo receiver to power the speakers not some crazy mega-buck audiophile amplifier like many dealers, and that the listening room didn't have tons of acoustic treatments---both of those things can produce unrealistic expectations for consumers when they set up the gear in a REAL home which does not have fancy amps or lots of (usually none) acoustic treatments on the walls. If I didn't already have speakers and a sub that I am very much happy with, I would not hesitate to buy from them sooner or later...I'm an old hand in the audio hobby and know good work when I see/hear it, and this is definitely one of those cases! read more

Purchased a ULS- 15 sub about three years ago. When the warranty expired the amp started with a buzzing sound. Called up tech support , was asked to perform some tests and they advised to send he amp back. Sub was only three years old and found to have a failure in a transistor ( probably a 2.00 component). They advised that it would be 165.00 plus shipping. I called to see if they would work on the price and they refused to do so. Disappointed in a sub that costs 1100.00 and is a direct to consumer sales item, that it failed . It was a good sub but not impressed with customer service and the reliability . I had an M$K sub that lasted 10 years without a hitch. read more

Bought a VTF3 Mk-5 on the 17th. Loved the sub. Sales team are friendly. The Asian lady (manager, owner or whoever she is. Acts really bossy and stuck up) isn't. I've had the displeasure of running into her once when I picked up the sub. Argued with me that I couldn't fit the sub inside my Honda Accord. Had to spend 15 minutes convincing them that it would fit if taken outside the box before they would agreed to put it in my car. I paid for it already, and thought it was an unspoken respect that I'd take full responsibility if anything happen. Guess she had to make a snappy comment, "If it gets damaged it's your fault. We're charging you a restocking fee if you return it." Jesus really? I ignored her. I had to relocate the sub recently and it dropped as a result of slipping off the Dolly down the stairs. Some of the parts seem damaged after I got it inspected. I called to see if Hsu could replace my parts and I was willing to pay full price for it. I needed a quote to get my insurance company to pay for it. Again, I got unlucky and had the Asian lady answer the phone. She made the same snappy comments, wouldn't let me finish my sentence, denied me any customer service, HAD to patronize me that it was my fault and they're not responsible. She acted like I was expecting them to donate the parts to me. If it weren't for how good their sub's reptuation are, I doubt she would be able to sell anything the way she treats her customers (trash). I'll be calling in again, hopefully it won't be the lady picking up the phone. read more

I bought the STF-2 subwoofer some years ago and while the performance and sound is pretty good for the price, when in standby mode, it still draws 10 watts of power. This seems like bad engineering to me. I put it on a remote power cut off switch, but I should not have to resort to doing this and there is no reason the subwoofer should have so much vampire draw when not even being used. read more

Great speakers! We've gone with the Hsu brand for many decades now. We're happy that there's a warehouse in So-Cal now. The place is basically like a storefront and you have to place your order on the phone in advance. Let them know when you'll pick it up or they can ship it to you. They take credit card and they had a small jar of Andes candy at the front. The gentlemen helping us was very sweet. The guys are nice enough to help put the speaker in my car so I didn't have to lift the 100 lb thing myself. :) I do have two recommendations though -- one of them is that they should put a credit card machine in the front because it seems kinda strange they have to take our information to the back to process it when they have a store front. Also, when my mom asked to speak to Dr. Hsu about some cables, they guy was kinda... not accommodating and said he could answer our question. After having been loyal customers for over a decade, if my mom wanted to ask Dr. Hsu personally about the cables for her $1000+ speaker, I think the Dr. should have enough decency to meet with us to answer a simple question. I mean, the guy didn't even ask if Dr. Hsu wanted to shake our hands. Didn't even say he was busy or in a meeting or something. I just felt kinda like our purchase meant nothing to the company. Well, other than that they are great speakers. I hope they take my suggestions to heart as this could be a very great company with a great product. read more

Love their speakers. I currently have a Hybrid system with a VTF1 sub. Its only a 2 channel run by an older Technics 5.1 Amp (100w/ch 20-20K @ 0.05 THD). Lets just say it sounds amazing for just pure audio experience! Sure you could get more expensive speakers, go with Tannoy's Reveal or Axiom Audio or Fluance, but honestly Dr Hsu speakers are great. The sub is just amazing! The flatness of the audio and the clarity is unmatched at this price range. Totally worth it. I will eventually move my emotiva 5.1 system to the full Dr. Hsu speaker range. I bought a VTF-3 MK3 several years ago and it rumbles and thumps so hard. It's still great to this day. Recently I purchased a ULS-15 MK2 and it's also amazing. I'm so surprised that I haven't had to struggle to find a sweet spot for placement even though I have a very open room. These subwoofers have been great for me and I highly recommend Hsu subwoofers. The staff at their office have been super nice with each of my purchases and let me audition more than I probably needed. Thank you! read more

I purchased their subwoofer VTF3 MK3 in 2011. The subwoofer is pretty good for the price. This year, I moved to a different state, and after my move, my receiver cannot detect my sub. So I wrote the following email to their tech support: Dear Tech Support, I have purchased an HSU VTF3 MK3 subwoofer in May 2011. Please see attached a pdf file of my order receipt. The SN for my subwoofer is V3SB110XXXXXXX. Recently, I have moved from XXX to XXX. After I moved, I found out that when I connect my subwoofer to my receiver, I am getting no output from my subwoofer while the LED light is red, while all other speakers are working fine. I followed the troubleshooting procedure mentioned in the manual (a pdf file of manual is also attached for convenience). According to page 8 of the attached manual, there are two possible causes for this: 1. The subwoofer is not receiving a signal 2. Subwoofer amplifier is faulty For 2, I have tried connecting the subwoofer to a computer 2.1 speaker set's RCA output (I no longer have a CD player as suggested by the manual, the speaker set's RCA output is intended for connection from its subwoofer to its satellite speakers), I found out when the volume on the sub is set to low, I still get no output. However, when the volume on the sub is set to near max, I can get output. (I figure this rules out possibility 1) I have also tried setting the volume to midlevel and touching the unplugged end of the cable, I hear no noise. When I set the volume to max, I still hear no noise. I was getting the same result regardless whether I set the crossover on the sub to in or out. Based on the above facts, do you think my subwoofer amplifier is bad? If yes, please kindly advise what should I do to get this fixed. Also, could you please give me a cost estimate for this repair? If no, what are the possible causes for this? I really appreciate your help. Best Regards, XXX This was their reply: Sorry to hear that. Sounds like the amplifier has died. Your best option is to purchase a VTF-3 MK4 amplifier. That upgrades you to the MK4 with Q control. That runs $235 plus $25 S/H. Call (714)666-9260 to order. Replacing the amp is easy. Simply take out the 12 screws along the perimeter of the amp. Pull out the amp. Disconnect the wires from the woofer. Connect the new amp tot he woofer. Screw in the new amp. That is it! So far so good, so I went ahead and ordered the VTF-3 MK4 amp from them. Guess what, after I received the new amp and installed it, my receiver still cannot detect my subwoofer. Gee, I think, it must be the receiver. So I got a new receiver, and still no go. So my last hope was to try a different subwoofer cable (BTW, I purchased the previous sub cable also from them) and finally it worked. So I called them and told them I want to return the amp I just bought. One lady answered the phone, and I quote, "So now we need to pay for your mistake?" I asked, "how is this my mistake? I described my problem to your tech support team and I made the purchase according to your suggestion. However, it did not fix the problem. It turned out that my old amp was fine and the sub cable was bad " She replied, "Do we have access to your cable?" I said, "No." She said, "That settled IT." I get it she was probably not happy about me returning stuff, but here are the facts: I, as a customer, purchased the sub with the cable and encountered a problem, being not a expert in subwoofer myself, I trusted their tech support team enough to adopt their suggestion to solve the problem. It did not solve the problem and I figured out painfully that the cable they sold to me was the problem instead. When I called to return the amp I purchased, all of sudden it's my mistake, and they are paying for it (By the way, according to their return policy, all customers pay the return shipping cost)! By hindsight, my only mistake in the process is I trusted their tech support team! To be fair, eventually, she did give me a RMA number. I will see how the return goes and update my review. But the experience was very unpleasant, to say the least. I feel the customer service can be improved GREATLY! read more

This company has the WORST customer service. When you sell speakers that cost well over $2000 the manager should not yell at you when trying to resolve a problem. Charged us over $500 in shipping fees for items we never received. After reading in other forums I should have know these people were low class operation. Avoid at all cost. My first in-person encounter with Hsu products was at the Rocky Mountain Audio Festival, where their demo had mass market electronics (just a receiver and a blu ray player) providing the signal through speaker wire that looked like not much more than lamp cord. Very different from every other company at the show. I was really impressed by their willingness to let their products be auditioned under real world conditions. And they sounded great - both the horn loaded satellites, and their more well known subwoofers. This was all the introduction I needed to order a subwoofer that I would not be able to hear until it was delivered to my home. Simply put, it's the best one I've ever owned. My Hsu sub seems effortless, reaching as deeply as my music or movies want to go, without ever being boomy. I recommend Audyssey, or other signal processing, with any subwoofer, to smooth out room response issues. I'm thrilled with the value and the quality of my Hsu sub. Even though my room size dictated only a 10 inch model, the performance is spectacular. Thank you, Dr. Hsu, for such a wonderful upgrade. read more
