Came here at recommendation of locals I was meeting for lunch. Got here right at opening, the place fills up quickly. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Our Server recommended the Blue Plate special - chicken spaghetti. She was spot on, it was delicious. Fried green tomatoes were good, but the coleslaw was only average. I ordered the Huck's burger. As a lover of burgers, if the meat is good, they are pretty hard to screw up. I took one bite. The meat was very highly seasoned to the point that it was like sausage. There was nothing else done to set the burger apart...toasted bun, etc. The one bite was all I cared to eat of it. I hadn't ordered a sausage burger. The waiter asked if I wanted a box. I told him No, the meat was ick. (Why would I want to take home something I found inedible.) He said he was sorry, cleared it away, presented me the check. IMHO, he should have offered to exchange it for something else. I paid the check, but I will not be going back and it will get a negative recommendation to the newcomers I meet on base. read more

Came here last weekend for an event in town and decided to try out this place. I ordered the Chicken Crevettes with garlic mashed potatoes and vegetable medley. The chicken was okay, little dry and the mushroom cream sauce seemed a little bland. The mashed potatoes were really salty. The vegetable medley would've been great if I was baby and was eating mushy veggies, but I'm an adult and prefer vegetables to be cooked just right. The vegetables were also over seasoned and just gross. I definitely wouldn't recommend coming here. I was here with 2 other people and their food was also just okay. I was so disappointed with my experience after reading the reviews. So the place is surprisingly large and pretty cute in decor. I was solo so I sat at the bar (decorated with bottle caps). The bartender was nice enough and took my orders. They had Abita Strawberry on tap which was exciting because I hadn't seen that before but I'm also not from around here, so there's that. However, dinner was pretty unappetizing. The menu is crazy long and I think they need to cut down and focus on what's important. I ordered the tuna with bacon, crabmeat, and hollandaisse sauce. While it wasn't bad, it was completely unseasoned and underwhelming. And this was an item I specifically ordered because it was highlighted as a specialty. Definitely expected something better from a place that says it's Cajun/creole. Also, it came out crazy fast - I was probably in and out in 25 minutes, including getting a small side salad and bread basket. The best thing I ate was the mashed potatoes which were heavenly (but for obvious reasons - I could taste the cream). At $26 total bill for my one beer and dinner it was also very pricey. I won't be back. The service was slow, food was terrible and bland, and it was overpriced. Maybe we hit on an off day but the "Seafood Pizza" was a soft tortilla with what could only be described as a spit of something that may have once resembled a topping on top and some old green onion. I would have been embarrassed to serve that. Most of the other options were fried or smothered with cheese and sauce. The burger looked ok, but I can't speak to the taste. The homemade chips were hard and lacked flavor. Perhaps if you're into a fried lunch or your calorie allotment in one meal it's your thing but bland beige food isn't my thing. read more

It's hard to decide what rating I would like to give Huck's. On one hand, I frequently bring out-of-towners here for the drinks, atmosphere, and live music. The downstairs bar is a nice addition (if you're not too tall, which I'm not. If you are over 6 feet, you'll have to watch your head). On the other hand, the food can be inconsistent. It's VERY decadent, so if you are sensitive to oils in your food, I'd take some tums with you! I'd recommend the Zydeco Pizza and Boudin Balls for apps. I've enjoyed several of their pasta dishes, but the etoufee is disappointing and the gumbo is so-so. I would recommend the wine and cheese dressing if you get a side salad. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend the shrimp bisque. I have tried time after time to like it, but it's sooooo salty. Columbus isn't a town with a whole lot of options, so I'd say that we are lucky to have Huck's. read more

Hidden gem. I'd read great things about Huck's but in seven years in Starkville, I never made it until my last week before moving.. wow. I wish I had gone sooner. Such good food. I will say I expected a more formal atmosphere, but for small town Mississippi casual dining tends to do better so I totally understand. In short, everything we had was great. The customer service was lacking. The salad was gross and soggy. The crawfish nachos made me so thirsty because it was so salty. The who Dat shrimp was overpriced and I only got 4 shrimp. I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody because there are better and more affordable restaurants in town. Don't leave your to go food on the table because it will get thrown out if you walk out of the restaurant for a minute. Housed in an old JC Penney department store, this perfect little downtown eatery offers a wide variety of tasty options. I chose the above-mentioned shrimp and grits, because that is my standard meal when trying out a new-to-me place claiming to offer authentic southern cuisine. Spicy, but not hot, this meal had an appropriate amount of andouille and shrimp, sauce that was plentiful without making the plate soggy, and grits that were just perfectly prepared. Add to that the ambience of an early 20th Century building dripping with Americana, the company (thank you Elizabeth!), and the chance to have a short business-related conversation with the owner (who just happens to be my friend's cousin), and this really was great experience. Huck's Place is one of those great local digs that has the finesse of an upscale eatery with the quaint charm and price of a down home restaurant. The cozy setting in an old downtown building replete with antique ceiling fans and local photos of days long passed, is the perfect setting to compliment the modified New Orleans style fare they offer. Although catfish is a part of their seafood offerings, grouper, shrimp, soft shell crabs, and crawfish give credence to the term seafood. A few friends and I went out in a Monday night, it wasn't too busy and the wait wasn't bad at all for such a hot spot. We ordered fried pickles and a couple other things, it turned out pretty good. All but one got the steak and the one got chicken Alfredo. My steak and all the others were great but the Alfredo was watered down with no flavor. My boyfriend and I made a special trip to Columbus to try out Huck's. I have heard all types of raves! We started out with the Huck's soul dip- so great! It was turnip greens, cream cheese, andouille sausage, and sprinkled with bacon! It was so good but so filling (cleaned the plate)! We regretted it the min we got our meal. We were already so full! For our meals (that we barely ate) I got the blue plate which was Cajun honey glazed fried chicken and Willy got the crawfish po-boy! We tasted a little of each to see, and we're very happy! At least we have dinner covered for tonight :) defiently would recommend. The reason I gave four stars was because our waiter was quite bland and just rude. You get a drink at the bar and ask what's fabulous. The recommendation is the Char Grilled Tuna. You order, it arrives. A generous tuna steak smothered with lump crab and Hollandaise sauce, wrapped in bacon. You take a bite and...WOW. It is fabulous. What an amazing blend of flavors. Kudos to the chef. A local gem in old historic downtown area. Great atmosphere with very interesting historical photos and very popular so if you go peak times be prepared to wait. Food was excellent, ribeye was so tender and flavorful. Grouper was delicious, we tried the wine and cheese salad dressing - delicious similar to thousand island. Selection of the menu was huge - something for everyone and great place for family. Saturday evening had entertainment with guy playing guitar in the bar area. Just wanted to voice my disappointment in my experience at Hucks tonight. I have never had such a terrible time at a restaurant in my life. THEY threw US out cause my husbands shrimp was raw and when they brought him a new steak and shrimp the steak was raw. The "owner" thought it was unnecessary that she be bothered with displeased customers and came to our table twice annoyed that she had to do her job. What they did was dangerous, by serving us raw seafood yet she was unapologetic. Instead of trying to fix the problem she asked us to leave and not come back. Do yourself a favor and stay far away. In a world where it's hard to trust online reviews I was reluctant to post anything about this issue but it was so embarrassing to be thrown out of a restaurant simply because they were unwilling to address their own incompetence. read more

Amazing food, management, and staff!!!!! I had dinner here a few nights ago and the food was amazing! The fried cheese was to die for, the Chicken Huck was delicious, and the bread pudding was hands down the best thing I had ever had. Along with having amazing food, Huck's Place also has very good staff. Our waitress was attentive and knew the menu. After dinner, I had managed to leave without my purse. I woke up Sunday morning to find I had left it at the restaurant. Despite being closed, management was quick to inform me that my purse was at the restaurant and they even allowed me to come back and get it that day. So I was looking for somewhere else to eat in this town. I decide it would be here, this place and old hickory steakhouse were recommended by a feller I was talking to in Atlanta airport. Upon reading the previous reviews, I wasn't to concerned. I had a seat at the bar which I usually do, the bartender was polite and served me a beer right away. I ordered the chicken and sausage gumbo as an appetizer. It was pretty good, at this point service went completely downhill. I ordered my food, sea food platter. I asked about getting the oysters for an extra $2.99 like the menu said. The bartender said no that's 4.99. Basically just put market price in the menu. I went back and forth awhile. Catfish, shrimp, hush puppies and fries I had gotten along with another bowl of gumbo. I finished the gumbo and waited 15-20 minutes to get another beer. It wasn't busy, the bartender was bussing tables? My food came, beer too I ate and drank it and left. The food was good and service was poor. read more
