So I was looking for somewhere else to eat in this town. I decide it would be here, this place and old hickory steakhouse were recommended by a feller I was talking to in Atlanta airport. Upon reading the previous reviews, I wasn't to concerned. I had a seat at the bar which I usually do, the bartender was polite and served me a beer right away. I ordered the chicken and sausage gumbo as an appetizer. It was pretty good, at this point service went completely downhill. I ordered my food, sea food platter. I asked about getting the oysters for an extra $2.99 like the menu said. The bartender said no that's 4.99. Basically just put market price in the menu. I went back and forth awhile. Catfish, shrimp, hush puppies and fries I had gotten along with another bowl of gumbo. I finished the gumbo and waited 15-20 minutes to get another beer. It wasn't busy, the bartender was bussing tables? My food came, beer too I ate and drank it and left. The food was good and service was poor. read more

A few friends and I went out in a Monday night, it wasn't too busy and the wait wasn't bad at all for such a hot spot. We ordered fried pickles and a couple other things, it turned out pretty good. All but one got the steak and the one got chicken Alfredo. My steak and all the others were great but the Alfredo was watered down with no flavor. I have only eaten at Huck's during the lunch hours, so I would be forced to defer to others for a review of the dinner menu, service, etc. As far as lunch goes, however, I have always been very happy. The vegetable plate is the regular option for me, and I have never left hungry or dissatisfied with the meal. Although I attempt to stay clear of fried food, I always make an exception for the fried okra here. It is really good. The service has always been good but not intrusive, and drinks are refilled promptly. The atmosphere is enjoyable, particularly in the downstairs area. The upstairs isn't great if you are hoping to socialize and bump into others, but it works well if you are in the mood to be left alone. If you are looking for a place to find a good lunch in an enjoyable atmosphere, this is your place. read more

Just wanted to voice my disappointment in my experience at Hucks tonight. I have never had such a terrible time at a restaurant in my life. THEY threw US out cause my husbands shrimp was raw and when they brought him a new steak and shrimp the steak was raw. The "owner" thought it was unnecessary that she be bothered with displeased customers and came to our table twice annoyed that she had to do her job. What they did was dangerous, by serving us raw seafood yet she was unapologetic. Instead of trying to fix the problem she asked us to leave and not come back. Do yourself a favor and stay far away. In a world where it's hard to trust online reviews I was reluctant to post anything about this issue but it was so embarrassing to be thrown out of a restaurant simply because they were unwilling to address their own incompetence. read more

Amazing food, management, and staff!!!!! I had dinner here a few nights ago and the food was amazing! The fried cheese was to die for, the Chicken Huck was delicious, and the bread pudding was hands down the best thing I had ever had. Along with having amazing food, Huck's Place also has very good staff. Our waitress was attentive and knew the menu. After dinner, I had managed to leave without my purse. I woke up Sunday morning to find I had left it at the restaurant. Despite being closed, management was quick to inform me that my purse was at the restaurant and they even allowed me to come back and get it that day. Here we go... Great atmosphere, looks like Texas, Louisiana and Iowa had a threesome. (That's not a bad thing...necessarily). Cozy southern atmosphere. Now let's start with the water... Individual water statements... tastes dirty, metallic, Iowa water, one sip quit. Moving on to beer. - all served in the bottle, no big deal, I can live with that... We'll just note it's not a brewery. Fried pickles delicious, shrimp exceeded their name... Free bread was free bread. Main course - stuffed chicken boom, mushroom sauce was perfect, side of asparagus... The asparagus fetcher must be getting paid by the spike because they were the smallest asparagus I've ever seen, I will say seasoning was again perfect. (Don't blame the cook for the lazy fetcher.) My husband & I hosted a business meeting here in February. We do this once a month all over the U.S. and he has NEVER had so many positive comments about a venue. I originally tried to set up the meeting in December, close to the holidays, and found it extremely difficult. I ended up canceling after being asked to sign a contract & they still would not accommodate the number of people we needed. This experience left a bad taste in my mouth, but a local customer told me to try again, that I wouldn't be disappointed. It must have just been the holidays, because when I called to reschedule in February, they could not have been more helpful. Even called to confirm the number of people the day before, (I normally have to do this at other restaurants just to make sure they've staffed appropriately) and they made sure the limited menu was what we were looking for. We had almost 20 people show up, service was good, food was better and it was all around a success. I will definitely be using them again in the future. read more

Went to this place due to having the best and most review in Yelp. Eating area has a great ambiance and hosts were very nice. I've ordered crawfish nachos and shrimp poboy sandwich. The nachos were too salty and the crawfish in it were breaded thickly that it's very greasy. The poboy is okay but not memorable. It comes with homemade salty chips and sandwich itself came with small shrimps, sauce, and tomato. read more

I'm giving this place a 3 star review. 4 star food and 1 star service (that's being generous for the service.) Dont get me wrong the food here is delicious and always has been every time I have been here. The servers are ok, but the hostesses at the front are complete snooty jerks. I've never been treated as bad at a sit-down restaurant as these ladies have treated me and my accomplices. Ive held off on writing this review but after I've been here 10+ times and still get treated consistently the same I had to post this review. I hope management sees this and takes corrective actions. I feel this should be an easy problem to fix versus if the food was bad. As for now, I just make the drive to Starkville for dining out instead of this restaurant being 1.3 miles from my house. read more

Read the reviews and decided to drive over from Weir to give it a try. Atmosphere was very nice, quiet and the dinner was very good. The two waitresses are our table were kind and assisting. Table busing was done effectively quick. Set it aside and it was gone. Yes a tad pricey, but the flavor was good and the portion size plenty. I skipped on the after dinner sweets. Post dinner was some time on the river walk for the wife and I. Would recommend it to you also. read more

So yelp led me here last night and oh my! I am not new to the area but I have only been in Starkville since last fall. I have been dying to get out and find the perfect go to restaurant. Let me start with the atmosphere, that's what you experience first anyway. Its right in the heart of downtown Columbus among quaint shops, historical landmarks and the hustle and bustle of small town USA. Its warm and welcoming with character and you're greeted by nice hostesses who are friendly. Then you walk into the restaurant and there are multiple loft areas with patio lights and lanterns and warmth and quiet chatter. The server was kind, informative and patient. When she realized it was our first time there she went above and beyond to make sure we were satisfied and even tried to help me pick a menu item when I was torn. She checked in frequently and really was the cherry on top the whole experience. I ordered the redfish pontchitrain and from the texture of the fish to the seasoning on the batter everything was down and executed to a perfect science. The grits were phenomenal and didn't need any table seasoning. The maple bourbon sweet potatoes were seasoned perfectly and the dirty rice was gone before I could get a bite. My fiance got the blackened catfish and while I don't like freshwater fish it was superb. The salad that came with the meal was a good size and the dressing tasted homemade. The tea was perfectly sweetened and the vodka comes strong. I am so glad that I stumbled upon this ruby of a gem and I will be back over and over and over again! read more

This place is simply amazing... first of all the atmosphere is perfect. It is set in beautiful downtown Columbus Ms , the building is true to its roots combining old and new. Huck's offers two full , well stocked bars. But all of that definitely takes a backseat to the food!! Offering a lunch menu that is sooo good and a dinner menu that is just Devine. I've had the porterhouse pork chop that was cooked to perfection .... the grilled and blackened fish dishes are wonderful also. But I must say my absolute favorite is the ribeye steak. The steak is cooked to your likings and is always a high quality cut , the seasoning is such flavor that a steak sauce would ruin the flavor!! The staff has always been great and so helpful. I have never had a bad experience here. This restaurant is by far one of my all time favorites!! It is a must if you are in Columbus!!! read more

For the amount of money you dish out at this place, you'd expect to be eating at a fancy restaurant, but no, instead you're eating a Huck's place a mediocre restaurant at best. Aside from having to wait over an hour for a table, the service was extremely slow also! Trying to get a re-fill of water, is a joke. We might as well have brought are own bottles of water while we waited on our appetizers. The meal itself wasn't hot, my medium stake was closer to well done, and well I already mentioned the beverage service. It would have been a pleasure to sip on something while I was trying to stomach an over cooked steak. Like I stated in the title, I believe Huck's Place is overrated. I've tried over and over again to like Hucks. I understand that I am going against the norm here since everyone in Columbus loves the place. I will say that they have a really fun atmosphere with two bars, one upstairs and one down. This place is very popular and often times has a 30 min-1 hour wait for a table. I've been here probably about 15 times and the service is overall fairly slow- most likely because it is always busy. The food is southern/creole. Everything is VERY heavy. A majority of the menu is fried and everything is smothered in butter. Way to much butter.. Many of the dishes are very rich, oftentimes too rich. The steaks are pretty decent but other than that I've never walked out of there impressed about the food. Bottom line: fun atmosphere, expect a long wait, very rich, buttery, and salty food. This is by far the best restaurant in Columbus. The staff is friendly, the decor is southern chic, but best of all the food is outstanding. Their house dressing is divine, it's so good I always ask for extra. Their blacken fish is perfectly cooked every time and while their steaks are expensive they too are the best you can get in town. Plastic cups, condiments - mayo, ketchup and mustard served in packets - and this is for dining in. $11 Hamburger was ok, doesn't come with fries, $2 extra for mushrooms, $2 extra for bleu cheese, $2 extra for bacon -- do you see a pattern here? Before you know it you're eating a $20 burger!!! On other visits I've had the blackened catfish with cajun sauce VERY SALTY (recommend the blackened catfish at Harveys - delicious!) I've eaten here a few times and somehow convince myself to splurge on an expensive entree but usually leave disappointed. Don't get me wrong, this place is great for drafts and appetizers (best cheese sticks ever) but the entrees are not worth the price. I had the shrimp and grits which was surprisingly lacking flavor. My husband had a steak and said that Harvey's steak blew this one out of the water. We love Huck's so much we drive from Amory and Tupelo to dine there. We are always happy with their food and service. Do yourself a favor and get the creole honey mustard vinaigrette on a salad. They should bottle and sell that stuff. The reason I'm giving 4 stars is because the burger was not great this last time and the fries tasted as if the oil in the deep fryer needed to be changed. I waited to write a review until after my third visit because I really wanted to like this establishment. After all, it's one of few places to go to dinner in Columbus, and it has a nice location and bar. BUT the food is less than mediocre and the server we have ended up with all three times is extremely unfriendly. Our experience last weekend will keep us from returning. As for my meal, the chicken was decent but the mashed potatoes were too salty to eat (consistency of instant potatoes), and I only got a few pieces of cold asparagus. My husband's pasta had very little meat and his sides were also way too salty to even eat. As a table we all agreed that the best thing anyone received was the French fries, so I guess if all you really want is French fries then eating here would be okay. The waitress was extremely unfriendly. We were with two other couples and when she came to our table and we were still discussing menu items she rolled her eyes and said she'd come back when we were ready. She didn't ask if we had any questions, if we'd been there before (one couple hadn't), or even greet us for that matter. After waiting too long for our food and finally eating, she brought our checks and never took our empty plates. We literally sat there talking and finishing drinks with our leftover food and empty plates in front of us for twenty minutes. For how long we waited and the price we paid to eat here, I was shocked at how we were treated. Needless to say, we don't plan on returning, and we definitely won't be recommending this restaurant to friends who move here in the future. read more

I had high expectations based on the reviews, but once you've had ettoufee in New Orleans, nothing can come close to it. I was definetly disappointed. It wasn't flavorful enough for me. Maybe it was just me but I've been to Huck's three times for lunch and was never impressed with them. Thinking it was just me at first my wife said hers was kinda bland and my son didn't really care for his. I may stop in there again sometime but I simply cannot recommend them for lunch because there are other places in the area that have better food and more reasonable prices. read more
