Brought my friend here to celebrate her birthday on a busy Friday night! We made a reservation and had a very small wait time despite that but nothing to get upset about. Service - Amazing. Our waiter was very attentive despite how busy it was that night ! Food - we both opted for the red fish, and shared truffle fries, and mac & cheese. After making a big splash in River Oaks, it was only fitting for Hudson House to do the same in Rice Village. Their second location in Houston has been buzzworthy for the area, boosting the eating choices for an area filled with fast casual spots. While the theme is east coast seafood, this is, for now, a purely Texas-born (and raised) restaurant concept. They've done well with the decor and ambiance. It feels upscale, and gives off a very old school polished interior normally filled with heaps of people. Reservations are always recommended, but walk-ins haven't been much of a problem on weekends or weekdays. Supposedly the time to come is during their happy hour, in which there are steep discounts for their cocktails and various popular food items. Much of the fanfare has skewed yfffounger as of late, thanks largely to Yelp and social media showcasing the place as a hangout spot while shopping in Rice Village. Their signature cheeseburger is excellent. It's simple with two thin patties, American cheese, minced onions, pickles, and their house Hudson sauce. It's only $10 during the happy hour, but $17 otherwise. It doesn't come with fries or sides, so this is a price point that Houstonians might frown at. On the other hand, the lobster roll ($28) and steak frites ($49) were disappointing. Not just for the cost, but the lackluster execution. My steak was overcooked and the lobster roll had just enough lobster for a few bites. The frites were light and tasty. Popcorn chicken is a bit of an abomination, at least the classic flavor, which tasted like regular chicken tenders with a bland'ish seasoning. The rock shrimp is bit too bready for my tastes, but pro-Americanized palates will likely find comfort in this. The salads are popular and quite fresh, as are their oysters. Their east coast oysters come at a pretty penny, but this is to be expected. The sushi rolls were disappointing and presentation was not that of a $22 roll. I would rather order their peach bellini and suddenly brunch is way more fun. Parking is always going to be a challenge, since it's paid in the plaza, and street options is sparse in the afternoons and early evenings. Extremely disappointed with Hudson House Rice Village. Incident happened Thursday, August 13th around 5:30 PM. I'm honestly so disappointed to even be writing this because I've been an avid Hudson House customer for YEARS. I used to go once a week when I lived in Dallas, and now that I'm in Houston, I'm at the Houston locations regularly. So this experience really rubbed me the wrong way. When I arrived at the Rice Village location, the front desk staff weren't particularly friendly, but I brushed it off. We got seated, enjoyed our meal, and when it was time to pay, I specifically asked for a physical check because I don't like any discrepancies with payments. Our waitress told us that they use the QR code system and that it would be much easier since we were splitting the bill, so we went ahead with that. I paid $78.47, including a 20% tip, and went to the bathroom. While I'm in the bathroom, there are TWO waitresses in there. One of them didn't even appear to be using the bathroom -- she was just standing there watching us. At that point, I'm thinking, Are they seriously monitoring us to make sure we don't leave without paying? Then I walk out of the bathroom and there's ANOTHER waitress basically guarding the exit. I look at her and say, "Oh, I didn't know that was an exit sign." Her response, verbatim: "You guys still owe $40 on your tab." I'm like... excuse me?! We absolutely paid. Then we walk a few steps and here comes the manager and another employee telling us we didn't pay. I immediately show them my receipt proving that I paid $78.47, including a 20% tip. The waitress then comes over apologizing and explains that there was a lag in the system and that it showed that we DID pay. So at this point, you'd think it would be over, right? Nope. As we're STILL trying to leave, the same two women at the front desk stop us and say, "Weren't y'all the girls sitting in that booth? You guys need to pay your bill." At that point, I was honestly disgusted. I'm not one to immediately play the race card, but I cannot ignore how discriminatory this entire interaction FELT. We were repeatedly singled out, followed, questioned, and essentially treated like we were trying to dine and dash -- even AFTER I provided proof of payment. And for context, I was there with three of my friends. We're educated, hardworking women -- two of us are PhD graduates, and another is an amazing nurse who literally spends her life saving people. None of that should matter because EVERY customer deserves to be treated with basic respect, but the way we were treated was completely unacceptable. Mistakes with a payment system happen. I completely understand that. What I don't understand is the way we were treated because of a mistake that wasn't ours. After being a loyal Hudson House customer for so long, this experience was extremely disappointing. I will absolutely NOT be returning to the Rice Village location, and honestly, I'd think twice before spending my money somewhere that makes customers feel like they're being watched and accused of stealing. I'm newer to Hudson house but have been four times now over the last couple of months and it is pretty consistent. I've been to both locations so I will leave this review on both... Although I like the Gray St., Location a little better taste wise for my dynamite shrimp, I think that the University Blvd location is easier to get a reservation. This is a really good choice for date night, a family event or a girl's night. Always nice, clean and bright. Surprisingly, the chicken Parm is one of my favorite dishes here. It's probably top two for me and I've had a lot of chicken Parm. The burger is my second choice; it is so good! One of my favorite appetizers is the Dynamite Shrimp and the salad that's under has a fire dressing that they should bottle. But overall, I've tried several things with the people I've gone with, and there's nothing bad on the menu. Definitely get a reservation in advance... This isn't really a place you can just walk in unless you're sitting at the bar and you've gotten there at a good time. Parking is valet at the gray street location. It's very hard to find regular parking there. You can find parking pretty easily at the University Blvd location. My only real complaint is the service is slow... And I've had different servers at different locations and they all don't really move with a sense of urgency. It takes them a while to get back to you so you can place an order... This was the perfect pick for my solo Sunday brunch. I made a last-minute reservation for one. Parking was ample (paid parking), I walked in and was immediately greeted by the ladies at the front and sat right after. Really enjoyed the vibe here! There's plenty of parking, although most of the area is metered, so just keep that in mind. We came during happy hour and I ordered the frozen peach Bellini and the burger. The Bellini was really good. I ended up ordering two. The only issue was that the second one came out unfrozen instead of frozen. They did take it back without any problem and let us wait for a frozen one, which I appreciated, but I do wish they would've just asked first if we were okay waiting a little longer for it to freeze. The burger was decent, although I personally wasn't a fan of the pickles. The fries were really good though, and the dynamite shrimp was definitely a standout. First time at Hudson House and would I return to this establishment? Maybe. Once entering you could see they had a lot of customers and the hostess let us know that there would be a wait we asked how long and they suggested we go find a seat at the bar. After seeing there were no seats at the bar we returned to the hostess stand standing behind a couple (just 2 people) and saw they were escorted to a table when we were told they no longer had any at that moment. We were then asked if we wanted to be seated outside, trying to still be positive about the experience we said yes and headed outside. During the time we were there the waiter tripped over the oversized umbrella three times which almost fell and hit my partner each time. We received our drinks my first one had a piece of hair in it that I sent back which I'm sure they just picked the hair out of it. I originally asked for a espresso martini and the waiter stated that it was too late to have one and that I should try the Stone Fruit martini and that they had the coldest martinis around which all wasn't true at least not our beverages. We ended up only ordering one round of drinks and a shrimp appetizer which was also on the cold side and that's not because we were sitting outside because once we received it we started to eat. Our waiter also didn't provide us with any water until we asked for them with our check. Overall I can't comment on the ambiance because we were sat outside (after being told there were no seats inside and then watching another party of two that just walked in BEHIND us be sat) the drinks were mid and so was the appetizer. There paid lots, and garage also. I think there is valet in that area as well. Came here for the first time with a group of Yelpers. We had a resy. But it wasn't full when we arrived at 11:30a on a Saturday but it filled up as the afternoon went on. Food- after reading the reviews there was the one thing that seemed to have positive feedback, so I went with that. I ordered the burger and it was yum. They have a lobster roll, that my friends had ordered. That thing seemed so tiny, and the reviews were mid so I steered clear. Service- was fabulous. Our server was Nicholas Tilman. He was so good to us, was charming, fun, and gave great service despite being so busy. He was the bartender made all of the drinks and the server, double duty is a lot. Management reading this: please give this man a raise. He didn't rush us out. Drink- I got a mocktail that our server created, and was happy with. My friends enjoyed there cocktails as well. My friends and I like to do a monthly brunch to catch up and eat good food. Hudson House was our stop this month. This is their second location in Houston and is located in Rice Village. If you're from Houston, you know this area is busy, especially on the weekends. You do have to pay for parking out front or go to the garage where I believe parking is free the first two hours. Reservations are highly recommended. We were some of the first customers of the day but it got really busy after the few hours we were here. Customer service here was top notch. When we arrived, they put us in a booth with four place settings, but we were a party of five. Without hesitation, the hostess moved us to a larger corner booth and got us comfortable. The star of the show was Nicolas though. He was our waiter/bartender. He was doing it all. He was super friendly and very helpful. He was also making drinks as they were ordered. He definitely went above and beyond! I didn't come super hungry so I skipped on appetizers. I saw some of their popular items being delivered to nearby tables and regretted that choice. I did start off with an espresso martini which was very tasty. I usually lean towards breakfast items at brunch but totally went the other direction and got the French Chicken. It's sous vide chicken breasts that are sliced thinly with a Cajun seasoning and a lemon sauce on top. This chicken was excellent. I usually like dark meat, but the slow cooking made for a very juicy chicken. It was also served with skinny fries and an arugula salad. It was a very well balanced meal. You got the light chicken and salad with a little mound of fries as the indulgent part of the meal. I would get this again. My group got a variety of popular items and every plate was clean by the time we were done. I like that you have a QR code at the table to pay your bill and they even allow for the bill to be split. Even though it was super busy, our waitress was incredibly attentive. I've also come during the week for happy hour, and their drink deals are really good. This time around, I ordered a lemon drop martini, which was good, but I think I still prefer their French 75. For food, I had the lobster roll, which was buttery and delicious, and of course the truffle parmesan fries, which are always a go-to. I visited one of Houston's hot spots this weekend and I think it's safe to say that understand why. We had a reservation for 12 for my homegirls bday so they can definitely accommodate a large group. As soon as I walk in the smell of fresh truffle fries will smack you right in your face and I absolute loved it. I really enjoyed my experience at Hudson House. The food was delicious! My husband and I tried the two different lobster rolls. We had one warm and one cold lobster with the skinny truffle fries. Both rolls were delicious but my favorite was the warm one. We also tried the Key lime and I really liked the texture of the filling. It was more of a lighter feeling with a pecan graham crust. I have been wanting to check this place out and happy it popped up when I was looking for food while in the area shopping. There is paid parking in the front and free parking in the garage for the first two hours. The menu was limited but I enjoyed the food options and definitely stuffed when I left. The food came out to be about $120 before tip. I ordered the east coast oysters. The housemade vinaigrette paired perfectly on top of the oysters. The only reason I'm docking stars is because of the service. Everyone is super friendly, but the service is sooo slow. I've visited now 4 times and each time the service is very slow to be acknowledged by the staff at the bar and then to get my drink after ordering is also very slow, upwards of 10-15 minutes sometimes. Additionally, each time I've visited there seems to be so much confusion with food coming out and the runners knowing who to deliver the food to. There has consistently been confusion about where the food is going and I always almost get served food that was meant for someone else because they are unsure where it is going. Other than the service issue (which hopefully will get resolved the longer they are open), the food here is very good. They only serve east coast oysters which LOVE. the oysters are always super fresh, and I love their mignonette. Their cheeseburger and truffles fries are not to be missed. I honestly dream about that meal. My only other qualm about this restaurant is that they do advertise their happy hour is only available in the bar, however they have several tables that are in their partitioned off bar area however you cannot get Thor happy hour specials at those tables not just seems a little silly to me when those tables are less than 10 feet from the actual bar, are within the sectioned-off area of the bar but yet you can't get the bar specials there.
