The Bloom is Off the Rose. Went here last night to get burgers for the three of us. The waiter was visibly annoyed that we were only ordering burgers this time. He was inattentive and never checked back with us after the food was delivered. My burger ended up being RAW and cold in the middle. I ate around the edges and ate the fries while waiting for someone to come back and check on us. By the time they did, the other two were done with their dinner. When I pointed out the raw meat the waiter made a face and said it was clearly uncooked. It was on the bill and absolutely no accommodation or discount was offered. Overall OK. Nothing special besides the atmosphere. For the most part service was great, we enjoyed our server. The rest of the waitstaff were practically running around the restaurant- was bumped multiple times and had plates passing by at head level within inches. Did not feel rushed but the service was oriented toward turning tables. Not the kind of place where the service needs to be that rushed, almost impeding on the overall experience. Food was good, but again nothing special. The burger with bacon was over saturated and the bacon was very fatty. The filet was cooked to temp, but lacked flavor. I think the cocktails were good, but the sazerac needs to be revisited, was way too sweet. Wouldn't come back again given the other options in the area. read more

I've never felt compelled to write a Yelp review, until now. I learned last night at dinner that Hudson Malone was named for the children of the owner, which was very touching to hear. It could also have been aptly named "Heart and Soul" because there was a lot of that on display last night. I could say that the complete revamp of the restaurant interior was beautifully done with expert craftmanship-and it was. I could also say that the masculine decor reminiscent of a bygone era was a welcome respite from the often sterile and industrial feel of many modern restaurants-and it was. And, I could also say that the food was beautifully presented, wonderfully prepared and extremely satisfying to the palate-and it surely was. However, the enthusiasm of the staff; the expressions of sincere appreciation from the owner; and the smiles on all of the faces of the patrons stood out the most. I've lived in this area for 20 years, and this is the place that we've all been waiting for. Kudos to the owner for taking a risk, especially during this scary time (in his words: "he's thrown the backpack over the fence"). And, kudos to the brave staff for putting themselves at risk to serve others. There's a lesson that all of us can learn by that example. I truly hope that everyone in the Weston/Westport area and beyond will come and support this place. We all need a place "where everybody knows our name". We've now got it. Visited Hudson Malone on recommendation from a friend. Had a very nice meal. Fried calamari was perfect with all meat rings and none of the tentacles and served with nice sauces. Crab cake app was generous portion, but quality, while decent, was not as high (a little fishy) as the Calamari. Prime 10 oz filet was a bargain at less than $40 and while it should have been seasoned a little more, it's was a very good cut of meat. Onions rings and mushrooms also good. The creme brûlée flamed at table was excellent. Drinks were good and service was excellent. Restaurant has a nice feel with good music. I'll be back. read more

Honestly.. I think this is a great and consistent addition to the Westport food scene. Their tomato soup with the grilled cheese croutons is the definition of comfort food. We started frequenting this place via take out during the pandemic and they managed to even send out a pork chop to go with out making it over cooked. Try it! But don't skip the soup! read more

It has great ambiance - the menu looked interesting, variety of interesting cocktails: French 75 and Between the sheets were well made, Paloma was basically just grapefruit juice and Sidecar was made with one of the cheapest brandies (given the price tag, expected something better). Calamari was ok but mixed in kale was random. Market special of pea and ricotta ravioli was covered with tomato sauce which didnt go, normally this is served with something lighter to highlight the fresh peas. Pork chop was good, latkas tasteless and over fried, steak hamburger was entirely devoid of seasoning, all I could taste were sweet onions. The award for driest french fries goes here as well. Dont know why we tried desserts but as fas I could tell these were from Stop&Shop: dry cheesecake, equally dry chocolate souffle with the cheapest icecream one can find. Saloon it may be, but there's nothing culinary about HM. Maybe they were sarcastic. read more

Horrible management and service. First, I have never reviewed a restaurant until now. Our first trip was during Covid. The place was packed and they clearly were in violation of Covid capacity and spacing regulations. I had heard the same from others....strike one. Last night we decided to give it a second chance. We waited 1.5 hours after ordering for our food. The waiter was non existent, never apologized or tried to help. The manager apologized and offered a drink on the house after we had already had a few, we didn't need more. The waiter, likelyout of embarrassment or lack of care, never apologized, no offer to Comp an entree, dessert, drinks we had ordered...nothing. There are many restaurants to choose from and word will get around. They treat their customers horribly. I will tell everyone I know and will never return. read more

There really are no words. While they did a great job renovating the place and made it into a great Connecticut style looking pub... It doesn't seem they paid any attention to the food. Ordered the fried oysters, the tuna tartare, and the beef tartare. The tuna tartare was brown - probably because they added the acid earlier in the day instead of making it fresh. It was too scary looking to try. The beef tartare was also very brown, and fatty ( a first anywhere in the world I've ordered it). We tasted 1 mg of it and it was disgustingly sour - like they were using the bad parts from any steaks they trimmed in the previous days and just shot them through a grinder. The tartare came with chips- really crisp but no salt or any flavor at all. The fried oysters were edible, but they were so over fried and hard they really could've been anything... they were like fried pockets of air. We had a light lunch [chicken paillard and the cobb salad] and would only returned to try the signature meat dishes if we had found the experience more encouraging. We ordered sparkling water which only came after we hailed someone and reminded them. The cobb was mostly flavorless and the paillard was a little better only because of the flavor of the grilled chicken but ohmygod the shaved parmesan was completely without any taste and was so old and tough you could turn it into soles for your boots and walk to the city and back [but not to try the manhattan branch of this eatery]. Abysmal high-end restaurant wannabe. Food is bland, that's if it's cooked properly. I was there with two friends. We ordered the grilled veal chop, filet mignon, and halibut dish as our main courses. All of the dishes were rushed, cold in the center. We sent them back and they came back worse the second time, despite a visit and apology at our table from the manager. The filet was supposed to be medium, it was rare the first time, charred on the outside and rare in the middle the second time. The renovation is nice, but the food.... This was our 2nd visit. The first I tried the ciapinno which was bland with small rubbery shellfish and very limited pieces of tough fish. My wife's branzino was ok. Came back tonight figuring we'll stick to barfood. Beer was warm but I let that go.The arrancino appetizer was frozen on the inside, so obviously not freshly made. The special kale salad was blanched and rubbery and the chef threw a handful of salt on it, inedible. We returned the appetizers, something I haven't done in years. My burger was ok, not up to par with other "burgers " in the area. No veggie or poultry burgers on the menu for those who prefer not to eat red meat. An impossible burger, ( really ?) was adequate. The only reason you may see a positive review is the bar might be fun to hang at.They're going to have to kick up a notch or seven to survive. Good Luck read more

My husband and I visited the restaurant for the 1st time tonight. Everything was fine until our wine was accidentally poured on us. We minimized the situation but we're very surprised about the staffs reaction towards what happened. Our clothes had red wine all over which is now stained and they were just like sorry. Nothing. Last night my family came to Hudson Malone for dinner. We have been here several other times and really enjoyed our dinner or lunch. However last night I ordered the special it was a red snapper. It was tasteless, and such a waste of $35! The size of the fillet was tiny and served over a bed of sliced zucchini. No seasonings, no lemon butter wine sauce, as the waiter described. Just pure blandness! Do not order this or the zucchini pasta which was equally as bland and tasteless. So disappointed!! We spoke to our waiter regarding the flavorless food, he listened but did not say anything back. Just presented us with two desserts. Dear Hudson Malone, if you are reading this, as I hope you are, I'd rather have good food than a couple of fattening desserts. Just saying. As a sidenote they have good burgers. read more

My wife and I recently visited this new restaurant in Westport and were blown away by our experience. The restaurant is beautiful inside with classic old world style and has both indoor and outdoor space, each with its own gas fireplace. It has a great vibe. We were seated right in front of the indoor fireplace. My wife had a special for the evening - cavatelli, with house-made, sweet Italian sausage. I had the fillet mignon. Both of our entrees were wonderful. The fillet was center cut, cooked perfectly and very tender. The salads we had were also delicious. Neither of us left anything on our plates. Our server Jeannette was amazing. She was obviously very-experienced, had a terrific personality, and provided impeccable service. The managerial staff was also very welcoming. Owner Doug, GM Patrick and Manager Mike all stopped by separately to introduce themselves. Given our experience, we will certainly become regulars at Hudson Malone. read more

Yesterday my wife and I went to Hudson and Malone for lunch yesterday. We had made a reservation and we're shown promptly to the best table in the place. Our waitress Angelica (who made a point to introduce herself and to learn our names) promptly brought us drinks. My filet mignon steak sandwich was the best I've ever had. My wife's steak salad must have been good because when I was half way through my meal I glanced over and her's was gone. Desserts were great. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner Doug Quinn who made us feel like we were welcome regulars instead of visitors for the first time. We will be life time customers. We actually like this place a lot, the décor, atmosphere, and service are over the top. How often in Fairfield County do the owners come by the table to chat or the staff call you the next day to make sure you enjoyed yourself the night before. This was our fourth time there and I would give 4 and 5 stars to our past visits but last night they fell down a bit on the food end. We started by splitting a caesar salad that was so small that it wasn't enough for one and the dressing was bland. For $12 there should have been a lot more going on. We then split the crab cakes and the meatballs, the portion sizes came out more than adequate. Disappointedly the crab cakes were mostly bread with very little crab and the meatballs were not warm enough and a bit over cooked and they should have been served with a little more sauce. This review is not meant to slander or diminish anyone's business it is meant only as constructive criticism from a person who has spent a great part of his life eating out. All this being said based on prior visits we will be going back and hopefully be pleased as our first visit. I hope this came across as constructive as it was meant to be. read more

This was our first visit to this new restaurant in Westport, CT. I'm going to include comments that I hope are taken as helpful because I'd really like them to succeed. First, the Hostess, staff and service were excellent. Everyone was capable and friendly! It is a very pleasant atmosphere and the physical setting is comfortable and a well-done renovation. I ordered a "market priced" salad consisting of a partially brown Red Delicious apple slices, arugula, a few sliced cherry tomatoes, plain walnut pieces and some small slices of Parmesan cheese. It wasn't clear why this would require "market pricing" of $20. In addition I had the "market priced" omelette with a small bit of mushrooms, spinach, peppers and cheddar cheese. A small bit of salad and uninspired browned potatoes were included, also dry toast. For the portion $15 seemed a bit expensive as well, I thought the dressings were delicious and the omelette was good. I hope for the sake of the very fine staff that the food prices are reconsidered or the menu be a bit more reflective of the pricing. read more

Walked over for dinner and had a great time. An old school bar greets you when you walk in, and plenty of room for dining with TVs and excellent decor. Outdoor space with fireplace as well. The food was excellent. The wedge was perfect, and the Pepper Crusted NY Steak Au Poivre was tender and flavorful. It came sliced and presented very well. Our experience- while waiting to be seated I hear host rudely talking behind 2 customers backs who are just asking if they need to check in for bar seating like it's an imposition to tell them it's first come first serve. Our party of 4 ended up 5. Ask them to seat us at larger table. No room. Fine. Ir you're busy your busy although plenty of empty tables remainder of night. Table we are given is very wobbly waiter can't fix it. End up eating us at another table. An open magically appeared? Waiter spills wine on coat. It happens. I let it go but this getting frustrating. Waiter loses one credit card and ends up charging 3 of the 4 we give him. Can't find it. We search. We find it on floor near our table. First time we complain about anything. Manager refuses to do anything but offer to pay for dry cleaner they caused the damage. A simple gesture like a round of drinks would have taken care of everything. Nothing. Too bad we are all locals. Fairness to them been there about 3 times before without issues although it wasn't great but fine. Fairness to them burgers are good but it's not that hard to find a good burger. read more

My wife ordered the beet salad as an appetizer which she said was delicious. For her entree she ordered the Branzino which was cooked perfectly; the fish just melted in her mouth she said. I ordered the squash soup as an appetizer and the black sea bass for my entree which were just terrific! For dessert we had the vanilla creme brulee and affogato tiramisu which were fabulous and a great way to finish our wonderful dining experience. Bravo to the Hudson Malone staff! Made reservations and was seated at a table blowing cold air at our feet. They were nice enough to move us over. We ordered the special tomahawk for 2 and they questioned if we could afford it. I was blown away by how poor our service was and being judged on appearance. We eat out frequently and it is the one place we probably will never go back. I don't like to leave poor reviews, but we are very upset with the way we were treated. Our steak was ordered medium and came out charred and black. We had asked for sautéed onions and they forgot to bring them. We let the manager know we ordered them and they brought them out almost raw. Split pea soup was okay. I've had friends have similar service, yet have also had friends have a way better experience. Consistency is key. Needless to say, we will not be going back. read more

I had a disturbing experience here so hope you will read. I spoke to the owner before writing this review so gave the owner a chance to respond and based on his response decided I do need to write this review. I have eaten here 4 or 5 times. Although my experience has never been exceptional in terms of food or service, I patronized the restaurant because I live locally, liked the ambiance and enjoyed some of the entrees. I recently had lunch there. I ordered tomato soup and my friend had the artichoke soup. As we began eating, there were splinters in my soup. I spit a few out, to my embarrassment as I was on a lunch date with a friend, and thought the splinters must just be herbs like rosemary or a piece of tomato skin. But I realized I it was wood (a skewer stick or toothpick) when a piece of smooth wood, About 1/3 inch long, got stuck in the back of my throat. I coughed it up and called the waitress over immediately. I asked to speak to management out of concern and to prevent this from happening to someone else. It was scary! The manager tried to tell me it was a sprig of thyme. My friend held up her sprig of thyme from her soup and I held up what was a very obvious wooden skewer piece. They said nothing and took my soup away. A different waitress came over and told us again it was a spring of thyme which it was not. They must have puréed the soup with the skewer in it accidentally. It then took 40 minutes to get out salads, neither of which were special or good. My tuna salad had old tasting tuna in it and the lettuce was soggy and shouldn't have been served to a customer . We both sent out salads back half eaten. The cherry on top was when the waitress brought the bill, she said that she took the soup off the bill ( that was uneaten minus the 4 wood-laden spoonfuls) as if I was supposed to be especially thankful for that. My friend had 2 cocktails and they didn't even comp one considering that I almost choked on wood in my soup and our salads went back barely eaten. The worst part of all was that I didn't want to write a negative review. I thought calling the owner after the fact was the right thing to do and I thought he would have handled things differently. But he just said he wasn't even there and they told him it was a sprig of thyme. What do you want me to do? Was his response. I really just wanted him to care that one of customers almost had what could have been a dangerous experience at his restaurant, but he didn't, so consider this a PSA. There are so many wonderful restaurants that need and deserve our business in Westport. Ill go there. read more

I'll start with the good stuff. The online reservation system was great. Nice and simple and incredibly fast with a text confirmation to boot. I didn't catch my servers name but he had a positive attitude. However he did seem nervous considering he splashed me and my date with our cocktails not once but twice. My date commented that he seems scared to even talk to me, and when it came time to pay my bill, he had an entirely different waiter give it to me. I ordered the Skillet Mac and Cheese as an appetizer and loved it, it was made to perfection. However I was seriously disappointed by my entree, the T-Bone steak for two. The potato's on the side were seriously burnt. I don't know if the onion was supposed to be a garnish? Because slightly grilled sliced onion as a side is unheard of. My steak, ordered medium rare, was the real disappointment. The outside was charred to a crisp. The steak came to the table pre- cut into three sections, two thick cuts separated from the bone and a third that was sliced into slivers. The pre sliced section was slightly undercooked but still edible. The two large pieces were practically raw! I couldn't eat it! I told my waiter how undercooked it was, which was about the time when he disappeared as I previously mentioned. All in all I wasn't pleased with my dinning experience, but that doesn't mean that others won't enjoy themselves. Edit: I got a call the next day, about 30 mins before making this edit. A woman called me from the restaurant saying that a "Doug" told her to call me. I was confused as to why so I responded with "oh, ok?" She then responded "ok bye" and hung up the phone on me. I brought my family for dinner to Hudson Malone for the first time and had a wonderful experience! Our server, Danielle, greeted my parents as soon as they got there, before the whole party arrived and was ready to explain the menu and HM cocktails and wine, knowing she would have to do it again when we got there (late). We were a party of 6 and you would think we were her only table she was so attentive. The food was innovative and delicious! We ordered a shishito pepper appetizer that Danielle called, "dinner and a show," and it was. The person brought the plate to the table and brûléed the Brie table side. Our steaks were cooked perfectly and the side dishes were portioned well and savory. Danielle told us before we ordered to save room for dessert because everything they offer is made by their chefs and so we tried the napoleon. Amazing! Excellent food and superior service!
