The vibe is good cuz it's Mexican Independence Day The service was kind of ok that's the only thing I can say my table was packed with empty dishes and no one took it away for a long time, the other thing that pissed me off were one of the valet guy, a little bit chubby, I want to describe him this way because he does not have any sympathy. It was raining really hard but my car was parked two blocks away, I asked him if I can borrow an umbrella he said no the umbrella is only for customers I was like " seriously? " I just finished eating here, or u mean because I did not valet here? Then I begged him I ll bring it back very soon, finally he lend me a broken umbrella, ok I was holding this crappy broken umbrella walking two blocks and finally reached to my car, I drove back and trying to return the umbrella, there is another valet guy who is slim and taller than previous one, and he is sooo nice, once he saw me waking out of my car, he directly run towards me telling me he can get it, just hold on there cuz there is a big water puddle on the side, he did not even bring an umbrella! I've driven by Hugo's often as I pass through Montrose and made a mental note on many occasions to go, but it wasn't until my friend had a birthday here that I was ultimately able to visit. We made a reservation for 8PM on a busy weekday and were seated at a long table in the back--this would be an excellent choice for large parties. There's limited valet parking in the back and plenty of street parking on Hawthorne. In addition to a pretty extensive list of cocktails and food items, they have a separate vegetarian menu that you can ask for. We got chicken taquitos and a vegetarian dish for apps; both were excellent. A friend got a passionfruit cocktail that was absolutely amazing--I would order this if I were to come back. For dinner, I got the carnitas while my friends got fish mole, suckling pig tacos, and vegetarian empanadas, all of which was reported to be excellent. My carnitas was a sizable portion, coming with pico de gallo, a (very) mild salsa, radish/cilantro, and corn tortillas. Because we were celebrating a birthday, they brought out a small complimentary dessert as well. All in all, a great experience dining at Hugo's! Will be back to try their happy hour menu. read more

I stopped by Hugo's for a quick dinner. The revered Mexican restaurant is elegant and welcoming. I started with the sopa Azteca - this chipotle-flavored chicken soup was excellent. The flavor was unique and tasty and the serving of chicken was generous. I continued with the carnitas entree. This was slightly underwhelming. The shredded pork was on the greasy side and the dish was served with only 3 smallish tortillas (the tortillas were tasty, but I think 4 is the minimum amount). The pork came with radishes, pico de gallo and a mild red salsa. They were all fine, but a more creative sauce wouldn't hurt. Hugo's is known for their hospitality and I can see why. The bar staff are constantly shaking up a delicious variety of margaritas and cocktails. All the staff were friendly and engaging. read more

What an overpriced, over-hyped, dismally disappointing "Mexican" restaurant with phenomenally poor service executed by borderline rude waitstaff with an inattentive hostess at the helm. After reading all the "great" Yelp reviews for Hugo's our expectations were high and we figured this MUST be a great place to try. We visited on a Saturday afternoon. Well, don't believe all the hype (at least not for our visit): the food was overwhelmingly NOT very tasty or original, although granted, if you enjoy quantity over quality, this just might be your jam. We couldn't discern what "type" of Mexican food they were actually trying to serve us (regionally speaking). We've eaten some absolutely delicious Mexican meals all over Mexico and in the US, and this was really not that. I mean, from the "rave" reviews, we were expecting almost an Enrique Olvera, Gabriel Cámara, or Carlos Gaytán-level dining experience at Hugo's. Unfortunately, our visit to Hugo's left us with a "bad taste" in our mouth at having endured yet another meal at a very run-of-the-mill, flavorless Mexican restaurant. Definitely NOT in 4-star territory for me. Our food arrived tepid, sloppily presented (with food running off plates!), and honestly, containing some of the most flavorless Mexican food we've eaten in decades. I mean come on Houston: we can do better than this with our Mexican food, right?!? It's back to Mexico for me and their dizzying assortment of delicious Street Food and fabulous dining experiences both great and small! The ambience at Hugo's was about the only thing that brought my rating up: the interior of Hugo's was bright, with wall-to-wall light coming in from banks of windows off the main dining room on Westheimer Road. Cocktails were honestly pretty kickass too! In the meantime, we'll schedule another future visit or two to see if we have a tastier food and service experience but for now, our 3-star rating is as good as it gets for Hugo's. read more

Love this place. If you're looking for a more upscale Mexican restaurant then Hugo's is it. My husband and I got the flautas for the appetizer too but that's my favorite thing on the menu so wasn't able to take a picture of it fast enough before eating! The enchiladas of the day is always a classic and safe choice. My husband tried the pork plate and it was very good, flavorful and tender. We rarely get dessert but we have tried the tres leches which is very good but small for sharing. read more

Hugo's certainly has great upscale Mexican food but I would prefer it's relative restaurants. The food: The food tastes great. There's a decent variety of options to try and most things are good. I do think that their portioning is kind of all over the place. I've had a meal here and left feeling stuffed and another one where I was left hungry. I really like the braised ribs and then tamales (which they do not always have). The space: Its pretty nice, a bit dimly lit. I enjoyed sitting in the curtained area because the main room just kind of gets too busy. Overall as a more expensive restaurant I kind of want to be wowed more. read more

We came here for my friends bday! Love the atmosphere and loved the food. However, I found out that halfway through my meal,!8 was given the wrong one. Obviously I never knew since it was my first time there. I mean it still tasted great! Just wasn't what I apparently ordered. The staff kinda just threw the plates on the table and didn't check to see who was given what. But the food was good! Lastly, I am not sure what what was going on, but there were more flys inside than there were outside. And they weren't small. Super big annoyance. This has become a tradition: fly to Houston for Houston Half Marathon, visit my brother, go to Hugo's. As Hugo's has always been exceptional, we found this year was great the seafood dish was truly lacking - lobster was cemented to the shell, none of the clams opened, the only edible part aside from the rice was a single mussel and one piece of polpo - truly sub par and mediocre. We were engrossed in conversation and enjoying ourselves so I didn't complain. Hugo's - get it together and a little better quality control please. I have very mixed feelings about our first visit. We were celebrating our sons 20th birthday, so it was nice that they gave him a free dessert with a beautiful presentation. However, I felt like the veggie enchiladas were a little bland, and my daughter said hers were only lukewarm. However, my son loved his pork dish and my husband's deconstructed enchiladas were amazing. It's not a Tex-Mex place so we had to purchase chips and salsa because we were starving. Cocktails were pretty yummy and creative although we did not try the margaritas. My dessert cocktail the drunk turkey was delicious. I expected a nicer decor and was actually surprised the bathrooms are not that nice. The restaurant was not even half full on a Saturday evening so the atmosphere is not what I expected. I'm not even sure how to review our waiter. At times he was not very friendly, and at other times he would tell a funny joke. And at times he had a sense of humor and other times he seemed annoyed at my questions. My husband made a joke and said that he expected a big sombrero for my son. He went into a five minute explanation that mariachis are not actually from Mexico. They actually originated from the French. I'm saddened to report that my first visit to Hugo was a disappointment. We felt rushed, unwelcome, and out of my 4 courses with pairings, I loved the tomatillo salsa with potato tacos & the espresso liqueur. The first course had no flavor, the main was a sad, sad chili relleno, & the dessert had a giant hair which the server apologized for and came with a new one (I hope), but we didn't really dig in after the hair anyway. This review is for HRW 2021. Not my first visit here. And in the past I have enjoyed. But this experience was very underwhelming. All of the dishes sounded good on the menu, but ended up being lackluster. We tried the Menu Entre Las Olas and Menu Vegetariano. They both had bold colors and phenomenal plating, but flavors were lacking. My first course was lukewarm. The tostada de atun was the size of a tortilla chip. And the cauliflower steak was literally grilled and placed on the plate. It wasn't even seasoned and there was barely any sauce. Cauliflower only costs 97 cent! Nothing was bad, it just wasn't great. We left still hungry. At these prices, I cannot recommend. Drinks were good as usual. And I am a big fan of Hugo Ortega and his restaurants. But today I was not impressed. read more

I had some heavy debates on whether I should come here. This was THE Mexican place that showed up on my radar while in Houston every time I looked. From what it appears, this is an OG establishment that's been around before modern mexican food even had much representation. This aint your typical tex-mex menu, but rather, a more sophisticated approach with some nods to tex-mex (like the taquitos). Although I wish I had more of a appetite to have some of their main dishes, Id say its worth eating here. Its not cutting edge compared to the rest of whats on Montrose, but its still worth being brought up in conversations for great places to eat in Houston, based on two dishes I had. This place is beautiful, inside and out. There's an elegance to it that feels old and new at the same time (perhaps it's the art deco influence that helps with that). Not overly noisy inside, but definitely not quiet. I was able to sit at the bar, and luckily there were a few seats available. The bartender was attentive, but certainly not there to have a conversation. He was quite busy as lots of people came his way. The taquitos are damn good. I don't normally get excited over chicken, but this was actually moist and had some grilled flavor to it. They deep fry the suckers fin house, and I can tell by the corn oil that its quite fragrant. They give you a generous amount of guacamole and queso fresco for this dish, so I definitely cant complain. The ceviche with snapper was good, but not a must have. This was the least lime driven ceviche I've had (and that's a good thing). The olive is the blessing and curse of the dish. While the olive grounds the dish, it also caps the ceiling on the high tones more than I would like. The lime, jalapeño and cilantro can never really stand out to its heights with the olives present.  This is still a great choice for anyone who doesn't want to feel bloated after their meal. read more

The food was amazing but the manager was loud and offensive towards my husband's race and religion!!! I went to Hugo's today for happy hour and sat at the bar. I ordered a sangria, a pulled pork taco, a cabrito rib, and ceviche. My husand is vegetarian and asked for a vegetarian menu. He ordered the chile rellenos. When our food came out my husband notice he only got one chile relleno and immediately told the waiter that the vegetarian rello said it had two on the menu. The waiter said the lunch portion only had one. My husand told him he ordered off the dinner menu and ask if he can please have the second one while he ate the one in front of him. The waiter was nice and agreed. My husband cut his relleno and noticed it was hard but assumed it was the cheese. AFTER ONE BITE HE NOTICED IT WAS CHICKEN!!! He called the waiter and asked if this was chicken, in which he replied yes. The waiter was very courteous, appoligized and took it away. At this time my husband lost his appetite and decided to take his food to go. When we received the check I noticed my husbands plate was not comped and asked the waiter. Again he was nice and removed it. After we paid, we sat there for a couple of minuets finishing our drink. Suddenly a lady came from behind me and loudly started speaking spanish really fast. The lady said in spanish, "why didn't we pay for the chile rellenos when we still took them to go?" I gave out a yelp because she sacared me! She didn't say excuse me or introduced herself. I'm assuming she was the manager because she had a name tag and a different color shirt. I told her my husband is Indian and didn't speak spanish. The manager told my husand why didn't he pay for the chile rellenos when after HE ORDERED THE WRONG ORDER! She said they later brought out the correct order. My husband said he ordered the correct one. The manager said BUT IT WASN'T PORK. I said, he is not muslim and the least you can do is comp his meal since it was the restaurants mistake. Then she said oh, the WAITER LIED THEN. The MANAGER NEVER APPOLIGIZED and she was loud the whole time! I believe she did this because we are brown and not Caucasian. This is the same kind of racism you find in Mexico when Mexicans are darker in color. I have been to many Hugo's restaurants and I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO OFFENDED BEFORE! read more

Floored by my first experience here. I've been to a few other Hugo Ortega restaurants but I think this might be my favorite. We came for hh and it allowed for us to try a lot of different things. The taquitos were stellar, perfectly fried so crunchy. The tamales were great as well a bit spicy with a robust sauce. We also tried the fish, steak, carnita and birria tacos. We liked the fish and birria best. The chips and guac are absolute must, the avocados they use here are very high quality. The verde ceviche was fresh acid and perfectly balanced. We also shared the Mariscos Al ajillo which was great as to be expected. The food is just bursting with flavor and has a smoked grilled flavor that is so unique. The salsa matcha was unreal. Next time I'll ask for a side of it if possible. We also tried the pastel de mole. Slightly Spicy decadent rich dense and so good. There's a ton more to try here. I already thought Hugo Ortega was special but he continues to open my eyes to his craft. Can't wait to come back. read more

I've been wanting to go to this restaurant for almost 4 years, I've been to the other concepts and they were also great. My boyfriend and I had a date night and it was AMAZING! We had the best oysters, fresh and grilled. We also shared the plantain empanadas and ceviche verde. Yum yum !!! His main was the pato en mole and the flavors were so balanced, you can taste the freshness in the food. The best part of our experience was the service. Jose, our bartender was attentive, kind, and made the best drinks! Abraham, I'm not sure if he was the manger but he kept popping behind the bar to make drinks and he let us taste one of his creations which was delicious. Service 100/10 !!! Does Hugo's even need another review? My favourite restaurants by this group are Hugo's and Caracol- delivering solid quality food every time. My only missed mark would be on the cocktails- maybe I chose wrong but I wasn't that impressed. Went for HRW with some girlfriends and enjoyed the meaty menu. The short ribs are the way to go for sure! So tender and juicy, and the salsa verde they rest on brought the right amount of acid to cut the fatty richness. You won't be disappointed! Pro tip- street parking is hard to come by- but if you venture out closer to the park a couple of blocks down, you'll probably find something. read more
