Asian food smell overbearing but we did arrive close to noon so likely preparing chinese lunch dishes, too. Just mediocre breakfast food in confusing looking place, but we were seated right away so we stayed. We should have gone to iHop across street as kinda pricey for breakfast food. The main guy (manager or owner) kept pulling mask on chin, then up over mouth when people walked in. I couldn't eat after seeing this over and over. We were very excited to try Hugo's after reading so many great reviews. We came for breakfast and ordered an omelette, ham, eggs, and pancakes. The service and staff were wonderful. Refilled drinks promptly, were warm and welcoming. The food was terrible and surprisingly overpriced for what you're getting. Everyone is just so nice we didn't want to say anything. It seems maybe ordering some of their Asian options would have been the better route, but as a breakfast spot we wouldn't recommend unfortunately. read more

This place was so welcoming and nice! Although I had only gone to pick up my order, the waitress/cashier was so energetic, welcoming and kind! We almost gave this place a pass - not a lot of upfront charm. But the Yelp reviews were good so we gave it a try. Glad we did! Friendly service as soon as we walked in. Basic breakfast was hot and delicious. I had scrambled eggs (fresh and yummy) with crispy hash browns and sourdough toast. My husband had the veggie scramble (zucchini, red peppers, onion, mushrooms) all fresh and delicious, with the same sides I had. Good cup of coffee, also! We appreciate a hard-working local restaurant and will definitely come back. Four stars just because the ambiance isn't really there. Don't let that stop you from giving this place a try! read more

I said Hugo's had great reviews and we decided to try it. The service was really great, and the food was just as good!! I had the Big Cal Omelet (eggs, sour cream, avocado, salsa w/ home fries) So delicious!!! And he had the 3 cakes w/ 2 eggs, he didn't say anything because he was too busy eating!! To cut to the point: Great Food, Great Service, Good Prices, and a Nice Mom Pop Shop (which I prefer to chains restaurants, yuck!) We found Hugo's through Yelp while visiting from out of town. We took our three little kids there for breakfast, and it was a perfect choice. They were very busy (it was Sunday morning, but they said they are always busy), which I took as a good sign. It is definitely a local favorite. We ate mostly egg dishes; my California omelette was delicious and fresh, and my kids had French toast. They don't have a kids menu, but will happily split an entree into two plates, which was perfect for my 3 and 5 year olds to share. The service was very attentive and food was ready quickly, even with all of the other customers. We will certainly come back the next time we are in Carpinteria. read more

When I was a kid, we had a name for this type of place: a G & P, which stood for a Gag & Puke. Your typical breakfast/ lunch local diner-like place. Not bad, but not good, either. I had a chorizo breakfast burrito, hash browns, and coffee. The burrito should have had a lot more chorizo, but it was ok. Hash browns were fine, coffee was passable. Was not offered a refill (but I'd probably have said no if it had been offered.) My husband had eggs, sausage & French toast with an OJ. Everything was fine except the OJ, which must have been watered-down Tang. He told me to NOT go in the bathroom, because it was disgusting. Total bill was about $23, which I guess is in the $$-range for CA, but back home in WI a place with this level of food would never make it with their prices. read more

Stopped off on my way back to the Cruz as I had a craving for corn beef hash and eggs. Here's my thoughts on this Korean mom & pop run American eatery which I give a generous 2.5 stars. Service 3-4 stars Woman who acts like the owner greets you with a warm smile and big hello. Gent who acts like her husby cleared and cleaned the table. She brought piping hot coffee and took my order graciously. I dislike having to ask for refills as I did here. But can be expected when lack of restaurant experience shows especially when table occupancy is 1/3rd full. Food 2 stars I asked for well done, crispy corn beef, wheat toast, eggs over medium. The CBH barely had a crust, the toast brought out 10 minutes b4 the eggs and CBH, so by the time I got the real food they were cold. Not only that they barely were toasted. Commercial packaged jam on the table too. Hmmm. Lets not forget the canned CBH for $10.95. Wow, the import tax for Carpenteria on canned goods must be #1 in the nation. Is it me or am I spoiled? I'm used to mom & pop small eateries serving homemade jams and free hot muffins and decent coffee, not Denny's style packaged drip coffee, and homemade CBH. Got it, Hugos doesn't. Will I go back? Nope. For what I was charged I'll head off to Cajun Kitchen for a real breakfast. Don't get me wrong, everyone is friendly here it's just w-a-y overpriced for standard breakfast fare. Restrooms very clean. Coffee mediocre, they serve Farmer Brothers. However, the have real half and half. Kids had blueberry pancakes. Nicely done. Husband had eggs, bacon, pancakes. Said it was the best he ever had. I had the sausage and cheese omelet with avocado and home potatoes. Potatoes were bland, added salt and pepper.
