Standing outside the restaurant waiting for members of my running group to show up, I saw a few people exit HuHot Mongolian Grill. I won't describe their physical appearance, to protect their privacy, but suffice it to say that I knew that I was in the right place. Inside, it was more of the same: guys who looked like they used to work construction until their ankles gave out; girls who order a Caesar salad with the dressing on the side. Is this where people started going after the Department of Health finally did away with Happy China? I was altogether unfamiliar with HuHot. My little brother used to work there when it was a Ruby Tuesday, back in the dark ages. As I remarked to a member of my group, it's now unrecognizable. The decor is surprisingly elaborate and nicer than it needs to be, given the overall concept. I've driven by this place once or twice when I was in the area for a discounted Toyota and a delicious bubble tea, and I thought it might be a more formal Panda Express, that you might take your wife to on your anniversary, and that the name might be a slightly insensitive play on the phrase "Who's hot?" The latter might still be true, but this is no ordinary Chinese restaurant. It falls somewhere in between a buffet, like the aforementioned Happy China, and one of those Japanese places where they squirt sake in your mouth from a squeeze bottle. No Diddy. It's all you can eat, and you get to select the ingredients and give them to a guy to cook on a big circular flat top. It's like my lifetime dream of being allowed to run amok in the kitchen at a Taco Bell--somehow coming up with new permutations of the same small handful of ingredients, bringing back the Meximelt for one night only (no Ricky Martin), feeding myself from the business end of that sour cream gun, like Pauly Shore drinking straight from that Slurpee machine in Encino Man--but with Chinese food instead of arguably inauthentic Mexican food. It's a brilliant idea. I went two plates deep, but I could have easily gone for five. I wasn't with that kind of group. They've been looking at me weird ever since I accidentally ate two meals at Shake Shack, as if I committed some sort of weird crime. The first trip was really just to familiarize myself with the selection of ingredients and the overall process. The second trip, I was really able to go in. The first time, I was careful about selecting ingredients that made sense together, like something you could actually order at a Panda Express. I got a few different meat ingredients, some onions, mushrooms and what have you, but none of the seafood, and I didn't combine any of the sauces. Back at the table, it occurred to me that anything you get here probably tastes more or less the same. The sauce ends up being the dominant flavor. On my second trip, I was able to confirm as much. I went full-on land, air and sea, with a haphazard sampling of noodles, vegetables and what have you and a combination of sauces, including a generous ladle of the second hottest sauce they carry. Just as I suspected, it was still good. There was a time in my life when, after eating here once, I would have dedicated myself to trying to find the one combination of ingredients that somehow doesn't work, or going back enough times that I was politely asked to leave, and the fact that that would even occur to me, at this point, is a testament to the brilliance of the idea that they've come up with. read more

This is in the strip mall where Walgreens is, but it's tucked into a little corner. There's plenty of surface parking. This place is a blend of a buffet, but you essentially get to make your entree for them to cook. If you don't like what you've created, it's my understanding you can go back and put some other items together to make your entree. My partner advised us to take one bowl for veggies and one bowl for your meats and sauces. The buffet for picking your meats, veggies, and sauces is double-sided so that indecisive people aren't holding up those who aren't. Once you've chosen, you walk to the grill and hand over the bowls for them to cook your items. They can keep things separate or together, so let them know. I couldn't even tell you what spicy steak and veggie concoction I created. It was edible and filling. We ordered fried dumplings and an Asian ginger salad as starters. I wasn't happy with the thick sweet and sour sauce, so I dipped them in the Thai Chili Sauce on the table. As for the salad, don't even bother ordering it if you're a green leaf kind of salad lover. It's all that cheap yellow lettuce. The broccoli sprinkled about was the only green I could pull from this. I think next time (if I decide to return) I will take some spinach from the veggie buffet and keep it for that salad instead. The salad was essentially canned mandarin oranges, yellow lettuce, ginger dressing, and sadness with broccoli for flair. I had water with my meal. They have basic drinks like soda and lemonade. Walking in is an experience all on its own. Selena came to us right away her personality, presence and customer service was all on point. She was very helpful on navigating us thru what to do. Love how you pick your ingredients all fresh veggies plenty to choose from. You then pick your sauces they have a wide variety to choose from and describe each one.you then take it to the grill and watch them cook it. Such an amazing experience all around. The manager Ellie was super friendly watched her check on customers as well as answer any questions anyone had. The building is extremely clean and inviting!!! Shared parking lot in a mini strip mall. Selena was our hostess. Very welcoming and friendly and seated up quickly. Dim lit setting but lit enough to see perfectly. Concept: Do it yourself plate. First you pick your meats, buffet style, well communicated at the top of each meat, noodle, veggie and sauce , then you pick your noodle, then your veggies, lastly your sauces. Take it to the hot grill and let the gentlemen do their magic. (Tip them for their services. ) They sauté your ingredients and turn it into a meal only you can enjoy. Take it back to your table and eat . This is all you can eat style so go hungry to get your monies worth. I went on a Sunday around 3pm . Nice crowd. Not busy at all. Reminder: if YOUR meal comes out and you don't like and or YOU are not impressed, DO NOT start screaming and yelling and just remember YOU made YOUR dish . I came to Hu Hot for lunch and immediately was impressed by the ambiance - semi low lighting, low playing music and quiet. For someone that is very sensitive to lighting and sound, I appreciated it very much. TV was playing but no sound. Our waitress, Bella was very sweet and quick in her return with our drinks. She was attentive in checking in on us. There are a ton of previously frozen options for meat/protein from pork, chicken, shaved beef and seafood. The freshly cut veggie selection was excellent as well, along with baby carrots, bamboo shoots and water chestnuts, etc. The sauce selection is vast - I chose teriyaki and soy sauces, which to my surprise wasn't very salty at all. I am super sensitive to salt as well, so it was awesome. The cook seemed to be flipping food to the beat of music in his earbud, which was quite entertaining. He did have one bud out, so he could communicate with me and did so kindly and with a smile. The food itself is so flavorful (to your own liking, of course!) and delicious. Despite the sauce bar, that's designed with a catch-all underneath, think that the area could use a more frequent wipe down, as obviously people before us spilled it all around. That wasn't too appealing to the eyes. I did venture into the restroom, which could also use a wipe down of counters from soap spills, but overall, pretty clean. Because the only dressing they have is ranch, which I cannot eat. And both soups were meat based. So I will no longer recommend to vegans unless they improve these aspects. HuHot was the perfect place for my small family with a young child to grab dinner on a Monday night. The restaurant wasn't too crowded, and the vibe was laid back. The host/manager on duty was so friendly and welcoming, and our waitress Jessica was really sweet with my 3-year-old, and service was very attentive. The experience is so much fun, of getting to pick what goes into your stirfry and making your own sauce! Love that it's AYCE as well. They had some seafood options as well as soft tofu (on the far end with the vegetables). Kids 3 and under eat free (since they don't eat much), which I really appreciate. I really want to give this a 5 . HOWEVER, my non-biased opinion is a soft 3 star. While I personally love this place, and the food, the staff isn't always up to par. The cooks used to have fun and talk to the kids, and adults alike. Now it's just an awkward wait for your food and a slight mumble when they have a question. You typically have to ask the waitresses multiple times for things they don't bring to the table the first time. Bear in mind, these are things that should've been brought the first time they come to your table. The atmosphere feels like a typical chain restaurant, which it is. Now let's get to the good stuff. There is a whole bar of food waiting for you to concoct your own meal! There is a second bar for you to concoct your own sauce! There are also instructions above the sauce and oil bar in case you don't want to try your hand at making an original. I LOVE making my own food and trying new things at every trip up. The stir fry was good, except the meat was all frozen & some of it looked "iffy." The veggies were fresh & there was a huge variety. The stir fry came with a salad which was a nice touch. I felt like I was eating a healthy & nutritious meal that was delicious. The service was good. The restaurant was clean. All the ingredients looked good and cooks seemed to know what they were doing. The cleanliness of this establishment, upon entering the carpet is filthy, everything is old and dated. When sitting in the booths there is no cushion left, you sink so low feels like you are on the floor. The food doesn't look appetizing, the chicken is frozen looks pink, when cooked it's thigh meat, yuck!! The fried rice, that I wasn't told is an up charge for, is gummy and nasty. Fantastic news! HuHot is back in the STL!! Went today for a late lunch, and had about a 20 minute wait to be seated (totally worth the wait). The only reason I mention the wait time is because the word is out across the STL metro that they are finally back open under new ownership since the "shutdown" happened that hurt a lot of restaurants. So, quite a few folks coming in to get their fix. All the staff was fantastic. Friendly, helpful, and you could tell they were happy to be there....as were we! :-) For those that don't know: Here you can create your own unlimited stir fry. You can choose from several different ingredients, including noodles, a wide variety of vegetables, beef, pork, crab, etc. There's something for everyone, even if you have dietary restrictions. Fill your bowl up with your own selections in a buffet-style line, then head over to the "sauce bar"! There are so many different flavors and spice levels to choose from, and you can load it up as much as the bowl will allow. There are even "recipes" printed on a large sign above the sauce bar to try, or pick your own! Highly recommended! read more

The inside is a little dingy and could seriously use a refresh. Waitress and owner/manager(?) were very friendly and came over several times to check on us. Drinks were kept topped off. We weren't offered a menu, I guess they assumed we just wanted the buffet. I would have liked to check out the appetizers and desserts. The raw buffet is kept clean and cold and everything on it seemed fresh and in good shape. Lots of options and perfect for families with diverse likes/dislikes. I do agree with another reviewer that the guys running the grill were not really friendly and engaging but I'm OK with that. I do miss the little cards they used to have with sauce ideas. I assume they were lost during Covid because they can hold bacteria and viruses but I do get a little overwhelmed at the sauce bar and it's a big bummer to load a whole bowl and end up not liking it because you messed up your sauce. Don't worry if you're lost at what to choose, there are recipes to assist. Last, you will give your bowl to the grill chef and they will magically make your recipe come to life!
