My wife and I went here for a nice dinner on our honeymoon and loved our experience! The restaurants has a lovely view out onto hotel gardens and down to the beach. Came for dinner - no reservation so we didn't get to sit on the lanai, but the restaurant was just fine for us. FOOD: We got the poke nachos (mmmm good) for an appetizer and for entrees we got the Ono and the Mixed Grill. So delicious - though I thought the Ono was better. It was in a nice creamy sauce that paired great with everything on the plate. And the fish was cooked perfectly. ENVIRONMENT: Beautiful view off the lanai. Even though we were in the restaurant, you can get a pretty nice view. Spacious with lots of natural light. I love that it's such a nice place without being overly dressy. Felt a little bit country club-ish. SERVICE: Good. I got the feeling our waitress was kinda new - she didn't offer a lot of information that I would think was standard (like what fish was in the mixed grill). Surprising to find such a impressively good restaurant connect to a mid-priced hotel. A rare discovery indeed. I have eaten here a two different occasions, six months apart. Varied menu with lots of freshly prepared fish. I must say I has drawn to the classic meatloaf with mushroom gravy! Very yummie and a rather large portion, as I love veggies I ordered a side of fresh vegetables with my meal which were cooked to perfection. I was too full for dessert. Second best meal I had during my visit to Hawaii. We came here for my mom's birthday dinner. The lobster curry bisque was made just right, not too salty and the curry was complimentary and not overpowering. The salad came with a nice, light, dressing. For my entree I ordered one of the dinner specials, the swordfish with pesto and risotto. I honestly don't think you could go wrong with any of the fish entrees here. I sampled the ahi, macadamian chicken, mixed grill, opa, and the vegetable lasagne. For the food and service, I definitely rate 5-stars. We ate here finally towards the tail end of our trip since it is the restaurant of our hotel. It is overpriced however if you get the pairing meal for dinner, which is $28 you will have two appetizers, two entrees and two deserts which will leave you happy. My had the paring and I had the filet. Her pairing was: a sweet potato ravioli, some sort of sausage, the Mahi Mahi, the pork loin, and for desert cheese and the sorbet. The sorbet was crazy in which one of the three flavors was a mango and jalapeno flavor. Overall, the plating of every dish was excellent. The ambiance isn't that bad either with a nice view. When we were planning our honeymoon, we had decided to have one 'nice' dinner on each of the three islands we would visit. After a lot of research, we selected Hukilau Lanai for the Kauai portion. Extra bonus for it being so close to the lovely Fern Grotto Inn where we were staying. We started with the Ahi Poke Nachos, which were very tasty. The wasabi crema was a bit much, as neither of us is a wasabi fan, but if you like it you will be all over this stuff. Spi-cy. For the second course I had the Wally's salad, which was a fresh and bright as others have said. The hubs upgraded to the lobster bisque, which did not disappoint. Then I went on to the mahi mahi, and he had the mixed grill. We spent a lot of time trying to figure out which kinds of fish he had, and we wrong on all accounts, but what wound up being the ono was delish- very smooth and buttery. My mahi mahi was delicious as well. We could barely squeeze in a dessert but managed to split a macadamia tart. Worth the effort. The prices are high, but seriously, EVERYTHING IN HAWAII IS EXPENSIVE. And the portions are HUGE, so you shouldn't feel like you getting ripped off. Celebrated our 1st yr wedding anniversary here and it was amazing! The location was a bit confusing but other than that, it had a great ambience. We requested to be seated in the lanai which had nice views of the coconut trees and a hint of the ocean. The view wasn't remarkable but it was pleasant. Our server was nice and kept greeting us Happy Anniversary throughout the whole night lol. We didn't order appetizers because the salad that comes with the entree served as our appetizers. I ordered the arugula salad while my husband had the caesars salad. Our server asked so casually if I wanted cheese with that (normally whenever I eat arugula salad it comes with the cheese already, so I said yes), and forgot to mention that the goat cheese was $3.50. Uhh okay. Anyway, the entrees had a nice presentation and the portions were good. I had the Hukilau mixed grill which is basically a sampling of Island grilled seafood and sugar cane skewered shrimp, served with a creamy sauce and orzo pasta. My husband had the prime rib. Both had great flavors but the mixed grill sampling stood out the most. For dessert, we had the lava cake with vanilla ice cream. It was a bit pricey but what can you do. You gotta have dessert! :) They added a cute little sign made out of milk chocolate that said Happy Anniversary. I wish it was complimentary or discounted at least. Our friends suggested this restaurant, we were skeptical, but on our last night we gave it a try. First impression: the resort (it's in a Wyndham) is extremely run down and dated, as well as the indoor portion of the restaurant. It sets you off on the wrong foot from the start. It is not fancy in my opinion - I see others feel this is an "upscale" restaurant. I'm giving this restaurant 3 stars only because we sat outside, the drinks were good and reasonably priced, and the food was good. No complaints about the food, it was fresh and tasty. I ordered the Ono and my husband ordered the short rib. We also had the clams special and poke nachos as appetizers - both were decently good. The coconut cheesecake was good too. My husband and I dined for the 5 course prix fix menu that is offered from 5-5:45pm daily. Our reservation was at 5 and we finished our meal at 6:50pm. We both are gluten free and were happy to find they could easily accommodate for gluten free to this menu. We enjoyed all of the food but felt the pasta course was our least favorite. I'm not sure if it was because the bowl it was served in was too small for the food or if the pasta being precut made it impossible to get on your fork. The flavors were great though. The gluten free bread was exceptional but be advised they tell you up front it takes 15-20 minutes to get it and that was very true. We chose the meal paired with wines which was fun but I'm not sure I loved most of the pairings. My wine with the cheese and bread dessert course was not drinkable. We had dinner here on our first night, and were lucky to get the last table. Staff were extremely friendly and professional, and the ambiance was relaxed and pleasant. Prices here are on the higher side. We opted for their fish sampler, with 3 different types all nicely cooked. The sauce was delicate and flavorful. My partner of nearly 18 years and I rarely have time for a date night!! Tonight was his birthday. Hukilau Lanai helped make it memorable!! I purchased helium balloons earlier in the day as an additional surprise and had them delivered to the restaurant before our reservation. We checked in, waited just a few minutes, and were greeted by a polite hostess who led us to an outdoor table. It was a perfect setting with light breezes blowing.
