Been here a couple of times when we're downtown for a show at Hawai`i theater. They're ok for what they do, in a unique older building, but unfortunately, this last time was not even up to that level of service. Waited over ten minutes to even get greeted and was not sure if this would cause us to miss happy hour. I did see one of the servers more focused on a baby in a carrier then waiting on tables. When our server finally came, different from the baby lady, we had to ask for menus but knew we needed to order a couple of HH food items cause it will take a while. They were out of Stella so settled for a Japanese Pilsner, which was surprisingly better than expected. Daughter ordered their Mac and cheese with chix. Sad to say it took a long time to get our food and had to constantly look back attempting to get our server's attention for refills of my beer and checking on when our food order would arrive. Daughter commented we should have sat at the bar. They seemed to get beverage orders much quicker and I imaging food as well. If there is a next time, sitting at the bar is the plan. We are back in town visiting with friends and family and wanted to do happy hour and possibly trivia and behold we found the perfect place. Parking is tough but we found a spot a few blocks away. It's seat yourself and at the time there was plenty of seats. If you're going for trivia it's popular and started filling up around 530. Our server came over and got us started pretty quick. 3 in the group ordered mules and by the time I was ready to order one they ran out of ingredients for mules. This kind of sucked mid way through happy hour and one of the main drinks on that menu is not available. Not to worry, we tried a few of the other selections including the cucumber collins, and the mojito. We also ordered some appetizers and food, the fried mozzarella was very good, along with the wings. The wings were cooked well and were crispy. Our friends had the chicken sandwich and the fish and chips and both were enjoyed. Overall it was a good time with food and drinks and trivia. If you're around give them a try. read more

Seems to be where we are headed. This establishment is a wonderful example of collapse. Poorly maintained, disengaged underpaid staff, under cooked food. Passed through recently for happy hour, served undercooked chicken, mid cocktails, at a table no one cared to balance. Flies joined us for our meal. At this point most restaurants in town appear to be fronts for money laundering, the owners are not investing, likely just complain of low margins after they extract their inflated take. Skip this place. Learn to cook at home. Note, alot of restaurants receive an inflated aloha rating... bad gets a pass because people want the best... but propping up the worst with aloha gets you undercooked food. read more

Came here for brunch with a few friends. Prices are reasonable for the area. I ended up getting a Montecristo sandwich. I've had other Montecristo's and this one rates below it. It has one slice of ham and the filling of the sandwich didn't reach the edges of the bread. It was like maybe covering 60% of the inside of the sandwich itself. I would come back here and try some of their other items. I did order a drink and the server forgot to bring it altogether. After following Google Maps incorrect directions, we finally found this place, signage is on Smith Street Makai of King St., entrance is on King St., but door says SK....anyways, we found it! Glad we did! We parked about half a block away in a parking lot and paid $10 for 4 hours of parking. If you can find street parking it would be cheaper. Trendy, welcoming vibe, staff was friendly and we were seated right away with no wait. We went for brunch on a Saturday. They had a well stocked bar, with bar seating, high top tables and chairs and regular tables and chairs. My husband ordered a cocktail, Tin Cup Whiskey neat and I ordered a pretty purple drink, Butterfly Pea Lemonade. I was interested in several items on the menu but decided on the Mac Daddy, macaroni with creamy Béchamel cheese sauce and fried buttermilk chicken and buffalo sauce, generous portion, ended up taking most of it home. It was delicious! My husband had the Cajun Fried Fish and Grits, biscuit and bacon jam, he really enjoyed it! For dessert we decided to share the Creme Brûlée French Toast, with the sugar crusted toast, sweet custard filling between two brioche French toast served with a side of syrup and fresh raspberries. This visit, I ordered the biscuits and gravy, which comes with delicious crispy chicken and an option of grits or potatoes, and you can add eggs if you'd like. I also ordered a signature cocktail, the banana walnut old fashioned. They serve brunch until 3pm on weekends so I made it in time! I think I have done the lobster bennie two or three times / traditional brekky / chicken and waffles / and a couple of times I have just ordered lunch because their sandwiches are great and I have been there for golf or the 9er games. Came in for Father's Day with a reservation at 11am. Just missed the rush. Food was ok but better than average. It's very comfort/southern style. We ordered a variety like Kalbi, Scramble, Loco Moco, Biscuits & Gravy, and Chicken Mac & Cheese. Chicken overall tasted a little dry and a tad overcooked but the gravy was delicious and the mac and cheese was perfectly cooked so it made up for it. Kalbi and loco moco would order again. I think the AC was not working that day and the servers apologized for the heat but it honestly wasn't that bad. If it wasn't so hot, I probably would've ordered more drinks. I only ordered one mimosa and had to ask for it twice because I never received it after everyone else got their drinks (iced teas and a bloody mary) and it arrived right before our food came. No big deal, but weird a glass of champagne and juice took so long. Overall, maybe this place is a 3.5? Place is good but nothing that was "wow". My boyfriend loved the mango sunrise so much, he got another one! The chicken and waffles brunch dish was delicious. The waffle was fluffy and accompanied by a vial of maple syrup. The menu describes the butter as whipped, though it wasn't as whipped as I suspected it would be. Tasty nonetheless. My boyfriend had a Benedict with potatoes. The potatoes were presented as tiny diced morsels and weren't very seasoned. Simple yet good. The Benedict he chose had ham. Portion was smaller than that of other brunch spots, but my boyfriend loved his dish and said it was filling. My boyfriend and I recently went for a trivia night and we got there in time to order happy hour menu items. Although it was busy, there was only one server that appeared to be working the entire place, and she was a little slow (OK, maybe a lot slow). Drinks took forever to come from the bar, and the food took a ridiculous amount of time. Luckily, we had trivia to entertain us while we waited, or it may have been more frustrating. I would give it a one out of five for service that night. We ordered the poutine, the sliders, and the cheese sticks on the happy hour menu. They were all really good. The gravy on the poutine was rich and delicious. I would order the poutine again anytime! Four out of five on food. Nothing fancy, just good stuff. My boyfriend got a beer that was recommended by the server, and it turned out that it was the most expensive beer on the menu at $16 a glass. She did not mention the price when she suggested it as a substitute for a Beer he originally wanted, but was unavailable. I don't think it was appropriate for her to recommend that without noting it was that expensive, because when the bill came, it was pretty surprising to say the least. She took a few dollars off the bill because of how long our food took, but that didn't make up for her other issues. We did find street parking that night, but I would not guarantee that possibility every time... the bathroom was clean, which I greatly appreciated, but they didn't have any paper towels to dry your hands off afterwards, which is kind of basic and necessary... Looking for a different place to go, so sister and I hit up Chinatown a few weeks ago for brunch. Made reservations online via OpenDoor but only pub table seating or bar seating was available. I went with the pub tables. I lived in Chinatown several years ago and things have changed a lot. And as the name of the restaurant indicates , Smith and King is at the corner of Smith and King, so I knew exactly where it was as it was on the backside of my old apartment building. Although I wasn't able to find any street parking, I parked in my old building, Marin Tower. We were there just for 2-hours and our parking was just under $3. Pretty good for downtown Honolulu. On the outside of the restaurant, I love the classic arched windows. And love the exposed brick inside the restaurant even more. We got to the restaurant early and waited a few minutes to be seated. We started off with the lobster deviled eggs, which includes one egg cut into two, so we ordered two. For drinks, I got a mint ginger lemonade. But I totally missed the butterfly pea tea lemonade. Usually, butterfly pea tea is blue, almost like sapphire. However, the lemonade, I learned, can change the color of the tea to either red or purple. So imma get this next time. For brunch, I ordered the lobster cake Benedict. It was pretty good. My sister enjoyed her tres leche French toast. It was just the right amount of sweet and not over done. Came here on a Friday, around 9pm. Restaurant was pretty full with only 1 waitress and 1 bartender. The sign at the front door said "please seat yourself" so we did. The waitress dropped off menus at our table and almost immediately asked if we'd like to order drinks without giving us a chance to look at the menu. We asked her to give us another minute to decide. I failed to realize that only their brunch menu was available, and there was only one burger on that menu. Hubs ordered the tomato bisque and it was delicious. I told the server they should have a grilled cheese to go along with that, and she they do, just not on the brunch menu. Hubs ordered the kalbi, which only came with rice, and I ordered a traditional eggs benedict with a side salad. We also ordered a pitcher for mimosas. When the food came out, I handed my salad to hubs, because he need some sort of vegetables with his meals and I went to eat the benedict. There was some grilled onions under the ham, and the ham was quite a tiny piece that did not come anywhere near the edge of the muffin. The muffin looked like it could be house made, it was also on the smaller side. The poached egg was a tad overcooked, so the yoke was not oozing over the benedict, and the hollandaise was bland. Husband said the kalbi was fine, nothing special and he was happy to take those grilled onions off my plate. I really wanted to enjoy this place, maybe we'll have to try the regular menu instead of the brunch one. Adventures in Chinatown! Went to a show at the Hawaii Theater and wanted to get some food. All our usual places were participating in some Halloween pub crawl and had limited menus and were really crowded. After passing a lady throwing up on the sidewalk (and mooning us), a couple getting into a pushing fight, and another couple screaming at each other, we checked Yelp and saw that Smith & Kings was still open for a late dinner. I ended up ordering the chicken tenders (Description: Buttermilk Fried Chicken Tenders, served with house fries, honey mustard and buttermilk ranch). Very limited non alcoholic drink menu, so had to go with water. When the dish came, the waitress set the dish down and asked, "Is there anything objectionable about your dish?" I thought that was an odd question to ask before I even tasted it. I looked at the dish (lighting is really dim in restaurant) and thought I got sweet potato fries instead of regular fries. I was starving and just wanted to eat, so i said it was okay. Nope. Not sweet potato. These were koge (burnt) and not in a good way. No edible. I flagged down a server to ask for not burnt fries. They agreed right away. Took some time but I got not burnt fries. That's why she asked me if there was a problem with my dish. They KNEW the fries were burnt. Guess they were hoping I like eating charcoal? The chicken tenders were good and cooked perfectly. . .the charcoal fries, not so much. So I ate the chicken tenders because they left them on the table, then ate the fries for dessert cos it came after I finished the chicken. They had an open seating, as long as the table was not reserved you can choose where to sit, but I was a little cold so I would bring a sweater next time. Don't sleep on the Cajun Fish N Grits! This dish was recommended by the waitress. I was a little worried because looking back at other reviews they all looked very different, but it was so flavorful! The fish wasn't dry and the corn bread was pretty good too. The only thing I didn't really like was the bacon on the side, but my friend said it was good to have since it was sweet to balance the salty Cajun flavor. I ordered the two egg deluxe breakfast which came with cornbread and bacon with a second choice of more bacon, pork belly, or sausage patties and a choice of breakfast potatoes or house grits. Our group shared the very delicious Tres Leches French Toast. The food was plentiful and tasty and we took advantage of the nicely priced $20 Mimosa pitcher. We had a baby shower for 13 of us. It's pretty noisy and hot inside. We preordered our food for the 11AM reservation and came about a half hour early to decorate. The food started coming out at 10:45, before the guests arrived. I asked if they could just hold it back a few minutes until all the guests were seated. Then I got a less than hospitable response from Samantha, the manager. She said that because all the food was already made it had to come out. I went for lunch and went to a new spot (for me). It wasn't too busy at the time I went ( around 12) but that doesn't deter my curiosity. There is a pretty extensive menu for a bar as well as several cocktails and beers. As I had to go back to work, I did not partake in any spirits. I ordered the following: Burger Delux /w Fries: 8/10. It was a nice and juicy burger. It was cooked to my asking and had caramelized onions, Bacon, Lettuce,Tomato. and tomato. There was an interesting sauce on it as well. Solid burger. The fries were a bit nuked and crispy but I enjoyed the salt. I did not need ketchup. Blueberry Pineapple Soda- 9/10. This caught me off guard and was especially good. The bartender/server mixed the flavors before adding the soda. It really hit the spot with the meal. This was a fun find during the downtown lunch hour. Cute vibes, good music until we were hosted. Came in took 7 minutes to be acknowledged by a waiter named Melanie which she presumed to talk about a hour wait since we did not have reservations. Two seats were open at the bar that she stated we would need reservations for so I put my name on the waitlist and she never called. Made another reservation online that was about an hour and a half wait. Came at our online reservation time and she walked past us and acknowledged a group behind us which the group had to tell her the people in front where here first. When she finally acknowledged us she asked if we made a reservation we said yes she told us to follow her and she sat us. The worst Aloha spirit from this waiter. If we come back hoping it's not the culture. read more
