We chose Bali Oceanfront for breakfast to make the most of our Hilton resort credit--and since kids eat free, it seemed like a win. For our stay, we received $101 to be used daily. Sounds like a lot but $25-35 entrees will use them up fast! Here's how it went: Food (3.5 stars) + The kids' meals were the stars! A rainbow waffle and a hearty bacon-and-eggs breakfast--tasty and free, bumping them to 4 stars. It's always an extra star for free! ~ My smoked meat hash had good smoky flavor, a hint of sweet bbq sauce and it's a very rich breakfast meal especially when mixing in the eggs. It's a decent portion overall but a little too light on the meat. (3 stars) ~ The hula frittata sounded exciting but tasted quite basic, just an average omelet. The pesto sauce and mozzarella did little to save it. (2.5 stars) Service/Ambiance (4 stars) + Service was excellent--our server wore many hats and still kept things smooth. Water refills, order management, all handled gracefully. + The ambiance is tropical and relaxing, with a semi-ocean view and that pond nearby. Breakfast review only! Bali Oceanfront is an immensely overpriced resort restaurant serving mediocre food pretending to be fine dining. The only thing it has going for it is the ocean view, but even the view is heavily dependent on where you are seated, and for my group of 10, we were not anywhere close to the view. They are also understaffed making it hard to flag down our waiter. We tried their Mahi Mahi eggs Benedict, Island Harvest eggs Benedict, Ube waffles, and Waikikian Omelette and everything was quite underwhelming. The poi English muffin too dried, hollandaise sauce too bland, waffle lacked any ube flavor, and the boring omelette overcooked. For an average of $40 per dish, I would expect some greens on the side, some sort of extra topping like ikura, caviar, truffles, or even some fresh herbs to bring umami and fresh aroma, and freshly baked warm and buttery bread, but all we got was very average boring dishes. The Hilton Village Resort overall is overcrowded, understaffed, unorganized with its renovations only superficially done, so I guess the restaurant is just a reflection of the quality of the hotel itself. For real resort fine dining at the same price point, even better view and real service, I recommend Orchids at the Halekulani and Alan Wong at The Kahala. read more

The service was excellent and the view was great, overlooking the beach. We had the lobster bisque which was fine. The boneless shortrib needed more salt as it tasted bland. Not sure what happened, however, even my wife agreed that it lacked flavor. Dessert was good with some passion fruit cake in a glass. We ordered the Pineapple Portuguese Sausage with eggs, Kanaka Omelette and a side of bacon. The sausage was delicious, you definitely can taste the sweetness of the pineapple in it. There was a 5 year old screaming, shouting at his father, crawling on the floor, throwing things and throwing a temper tantrum almost the entire time we were there. The parents kept threatening to take him out, but they did nothing. We mentioned it to our waiter and he sympathized but said they can't do anything about it. The manager came to talk to us and sympathized, also, but said there is little they can do. This restaurant is expensive and diners deserve to have a pleasant experience. We were greeted right away and seated exactly at our reservation time. Our waitress was very attentive, explained the menu thoroughly, checked on us often, and always made sure our drinks were full. We got the seared scallops and fresh oysters for our starters and it was super yummy! The three course dinner was amazing from start to finish. The lobster bisque and fresh catch were both delicious and flavorful. The panna cotta was the perfect dessert to finish the course. We were also given another mango lilikoi dessert as celebration for our graduation! My wife had booked a table for our 2-year anniversary, and had specifically asked for a nice table. Before being seated, we were asked if we were local, and were seated at a table far to the back. I had asked a server if they could bring a hostess to see if we could get better seating, but she was unable to get their attention. I had called two hostesses, and I'm not sure if the first one heard me, but the second one definitely did, and turned to face me, but then turned back around and continued walking. I've never been treated such by an establishment, and we were debating just leaving to go to the bar. We walked backed to hostesses to note that other tables seated after us got better seats, and they told us they would try to find availability. A hostess came by to bring us to another table, but she was not happy to do so, and we could tell. Again, I've never been treated this way by any restaurant staff, so I'm just shocked. They were very accommodating despite us being late to our reservation (Friday night fireworks, prepare in advance if you want to dine in a Friday, as the area gets very congested). I booked the restaurant on a Friday for 10 people largely because of its proximity to the fireworks. A week prior, I needed to add 10 more people (no problem, they said). The day of, I added 4 more seats (no problem, they said). We arrived at 6:50pm, and we needed two more seats. They let us add another table at the end of our tables. Our seats were right at the beginning of the restaurant, which was a quiet area and allowed us to socialize. I was a little concerned about the reviews regarding their slow service, so I attempted to pre-order. Unfortunately, I had sent it to the wrong email address, so we ended up ordering again in person. I shared my concern with Katie, their manager, and she said she would do her best to get the food out quickly. At 7:50pm, our waitress, Kris, reminded us to see the fireworks. That was fun! We had front row seats! When we returned to our seats, our first course was there. The oysters were delicious! Then, my salad and lobster was served. It, too, was delicious. LOWS: 1. kanpachi dish was dry, in much need of a tasty sauce. 2. too many steak offerings. anyone can cook a good steak, but sauces are super important. i didn't see good ol' comfort sauces/condiments (A-1 sauce or Lea & Perrins worcestershire sauce) on the menu or on the table. i was fearful to inquire in this $$$$ eatery. no grilled onions to accompany steaks. no condiments on the table (or on a condiments cart) is almost cocky for chefs to figure they can season dishes to customers' liking. most east Asians/others are very salt tolerant (put shoyu on rice! gasp, horrors!) 3. your credit card disappears -- for "processing" somewhere in the kitchen. this is very bad, for a $$$$ eatery, as employee-crooks can steal your card info. even 20 chair eateries nowadays have a hand-held charge device as you watch. 4. menu offerings weren't good, or tantalizing. $$$$ eateries should hire a wordsmith to make dishes more tantalizingly described. a glossary would help to make diners -- some very skilled, paid, super busy/valuable -- NOT feel "stupid" 'cuz they're not foodie words proficient. "You get only 1 chance to make a first impression." many folks are fearful to ask their waiter/waitress questions which too-often spur a junk/bogus/vague answer. table conversation makes it even more difficult to wave your server who is not around when your question pops in your wee brain. When it came to ordering food, I ordered the same as the person next to me a medium rare filet mignon, except instead of mash I wanted smashed potatoes, when everyone was served, she brought me a share plate.
