One of the best mom & pop cafes in Humble! If you want breakfast or lunch this place has you covered! The entire restaurant is decorated with old-school totems & signs that make you travel back in time. It is homey and whimsically designed--anyone would appreciate this. The cornbread reminds me of a version of the intoxicating rolls from Texas Roadhouse (BUT this cornbread is better) it is served with a cinnamon & regular butter. I always order a new item when I return, and this time the Philly cheesesteak was the main character. It was meaty and scrumptious & the onion rings added a nice touch. Absolutely awful. I ordered the deluxe country breakfast and my husband just ordered sausage gravy and biscuits. Preface, everyone seemed in a terrible mood upon walking in. I haven't been to Humble city cafe in years and am so disappointed in how much it's changed. They claim home made biscuits and gravy, that is a complete lie. Those of us who make home made biscuits and sausage gravy can tell the difference. The gravy didn't have any flavor and the sausage was a sausage patty the threw on the grill, cooked and chopped into huge pieces and tossed into the gravy. The only thing that may have been home made was the pancakes. My chicken fried steak was literally almost nothing but fried breading. Paper thin steak to the point we literally couldn't taste meat and it disentegrated into tiny little crumb sized pieces when cut into. I ordered my eggs fried over medium-hard, yolk came spilling out when I began cutting into them. The country potatoes are frozen, not home made at all. The waitress seemed shocked that I wasn't happy with the chicken fried steak and begrudgingly took it back. I didn't bother mentioning the eggs or potatoes. I took maybe 5 bites of the entire meal. I took my losses, paid my bill and left. We went home and made our own breakfast. This is not the same food, atmosphere, or friendliness we had become accustomed to in the past and this is why so many small businesses end up falling. Humble City Cafe has been around a long time! I felt like the quality of food had gone down over the last few years. My mother-in-law was visiting from out of town and she wanted Country cooking, so I thought we would give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was! Our food was delicious! Excellent service, and of course the ambiance supports down home goodness we love. Only complaint was the fries were soggy and a bit greasy. Breakfast was pretty bland. Kids liked their pancakes but it's hard to mess that one up. Chicken fried steak was awful. Don't even know if you can call it a real chicken fried steak. It felt like they mixed batter in with smallest bit of meat and deep fried until it became a mystery piece of crap. Weird it's ranked so high on google. Only positive might be the large portions for the price. We popped in for some supper on a rainy Saturday. We were seated immediately. The staff were nice and helpful when it came to navigating the menu. The inside was so eclectic. There was a lot to look at. It was cute. Lots of memories. Service overall was perfect! The food came out pretty quick. Meatloaf- Great flavor. The brown gravy was a perfect topping. My wife and I were visiting Houston and came in to the Cafe for the first time with a large party of 11pm a Sunday afternoon for brunch. The restaurant has a decent amount of seating, although it did take a little while for our party to be seated because of available tables, totally understandable given our party size. When we finally got sat our server was very attentive to our needs from the start which elevated our dining experience. To start, we ordered 3 cornbread starters--they came out fresh and paired amazingly with their whipped butter! For my entree I ordered the "Meat Lovers Omelette"--an omelette filled with bacon, ham, sausage and cheddar cheese. It came with a biscuit, a protein (sausage patties), and country potatoes. The plate portioning was HUGE. It was hard to finish because of how much there was--definitely good for the price we paid. Regarding the quality, it wasn't amazing, but it wasn't bad either. Some of my food didn't taste fresh, and there was a lack of balance in my omelette, sometimes there were just big bites of pure egg which weren't enjoyable. If I could rate this place a 3.5 I would. Wasn't horrible, but wasn't amazing either. Definitely good if you're looking to fill yourself up with a large volume of food for a great price. Might come back if we're in the area again! read more

The decor is pretty cool in this place. Why do they have an antique shop upstairs? Maybe one day I'll go back just to see that. If you want a pretty decent breakfast coupled with pretty decent pricing, this place will tickle your fancy. I just tried the daily special after seeing all the options. 2 eggs, sausage, and pancakes are good enough for me. The waitress did a good job recommending the link sausage over the pan sausage. That link sausage is full of flavor. You can pay an upgrade charge to have the pancakes have extras in them. You will notice that my fatness told me to get pecan pancakes and blueberry pancakes. They did not skimp on adding either inside the pancakes. I wish they did an all you can eat pancake promotion. All in all, this is a decent place to visit and eat. read more

We have a group of retired friends who like to get together once a month for a lunch out. We come to the Humble City Cafe a few times a year, the food is always good and the service is great. We usually ask for a big table to seat 14 or so and they oblige, we try to come around 12:30 as the lunch crowd starts to thin a bit. Parking used to be a challenge but the city put in a public lot around the corner which is so convenient. Today I had a half order of the Chicken Quesadillas and a side of the Fried Green Tomatoes. My wife tried the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and baked apples. Everything was great and considering the size of our group, the food all came out quite quickly from the time we ordered. I was glad I got the half order as it was all I could eat. If you haven't tried the food here you really should. Today was our first visit to Humble City Cafe and I have to say it was very pleasant. Plenty of parking and easy to find. The host was very kind and answered all of my nervous questions that I could not find answers to online. Our waitress was very attentive and quick. She was very knowledgeable and went above and beyond and was very kind. Now to the food! We came on a Sunday at about 11:30am, perfect time to still have breakfast and lunch. It was not over crowded or uncomfortable. We were a party of 4, half of us ate breakfast and the other, dinner/lunch. Portions were large and more than reasonably priced. If you're wanting a "home cooked meal" then this place is for you. Burgers are huge, so order with caution but the taste was wonderful for a beefy burger! One of the many things I definitely loved about this place, they bring out fresh cornbread to the table! Yummy. Overall, the restaurant itself was clean inside and out. I've lived here forever and somehow missed this stellar location. I just keep smacking my head thinking of the friends and family I could have taken here. Just have to do it going forward. This is good country eating at its best. The food is outstanding, the choices vast and the serving's plentiful and hearty. The chicken fried steak is available in two sizes a half and a full, don't be fooled, that half will occupy most of your plate but get the full so you can take some home. I had cabbage and sweet potatoes as sides, both made me eat my veggies first. Same could be said of the steaming hot fried okra, solid southern cuisine. We have been going to the Humble City Cafe since the late 1990s but sadly the food and service is not what it used to be. Food, I guess they decided to save money by replacing the hash browns with a frozen potato disk that resembles the one from McDonalds but less appealing. When I saw it I immediately asked if that was the hash-browns and exchanged it for some watery grits. As far as service I only had my coffee cup filled once and that was when the cup was originally brought out and never got a refill after that. We came here on the way to our weekend home in Livingston! Loved the small town ambiance and there was not a long wait time to come in. We were seated promptly and were given our drinks quickly, however we can't say the same for the food. I know they were busy but our food did not come out until about 45 min later. The food was good, and apologies for not posting an image, as we devoured it by the time it came out. I wanted to like this place. The kitschy decor, the historic building, and the variety of the menu are all welcoming sights. However, this place didn't quite do it for me. I visited with another. The complimentary cornbread was dry. My dining partner's meatloaf was served still cold. I enjoyed my Buffalo chicken salad, and the blue cheese dressing was quite nice with chucks of blue cheese. The hush puppies were a total ripoff. It costs almost three dollars for a side of them, and when it came out, there was four small pieces of what looked and tasted like frozen hush puppies from a bag. Service was a tad slow but understandable as there was only a single server manning the dining room. He was very nice though. read more

This place used to be decent but not anymore. The food quality has gone way down. Everything is overcooked, dry, and not enjoyable. I have yet to have a decent server that acknowledges you exist, which is sort of their job. Don't expect "service"....expect to wait forever after seated, don't expect to get a drink refill unless you get up and walk over and get it yourself, which I've done. The last time I was here my server LEFT while I was there....I finally went to the front to pay, no ticket, no nothing. Other servers saw me clearly needing something and ignored me. It's laughable. And the managers are the same sorry quality as the terrible servers. The only people I really see working in this place are the people cleaning tables. This is NOT the cute, quaint, small town diner type place that you'll expect. Either drop your expectations to almost zero, or find somewhere else to eat. read more

Where can you go for a real good comfort breakfast and eat at an historical building? here at humble city cafe. this place is Great for breakfast! with an exceptional Friendly staff that loves to fill your cup of Joe in the AM. i always come here for breakfast and i'm big on breakfast because its the first meal of the day and its the most important meal. the Food comes in good portions so come hungry and leave happy. i have eaten here on numerous occasions and the food never fails. i've tried maybe half of the items on menu for breakfast. i would recommend a nice chicken fried chicken breakfast with gravy it complements well with either scramble or over easy eggs and don't forget to have the chicken fried chicken with their smothered biscuits and gravy now that is southern comfort. the side meats like bacon is always cooked to perfection and sliced ham is always nice hot and soft and the pancakes and french toast are delicious as well, make sure to ask for the warm syrup. if your into omelettes i recommend a bacon and cheese or western omelette these are huge and they do justice they are always packed and fulling and you cant ever go wrong with that. humble city cafe is really nice place so enjoy this historical spot while it is still here, they don't make places like this anymore. read more

It's a throwback of nostalgia, souvenirs and Americana and that's just the lobby. oddly enough, when you sit down to eat, the table is provided a complimentary pan of cornbread with creamy honey butter as a appetizer while you wait. The menu is broad and deep, mostly old country favorites are served. you will find chicken and dumplings, greens, meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, and other assortments of old favorites. I ordered the cheese sticks as an appetizer right after I sat down. 30 minutes later they arrived and a few minutes later so did my chicken pot pie. When I order an appetizer I want it well before the meal. The chicken pot pie I ordered was soupy and not at all creamy. The service was friendly and the bathrooms were clean though. We visited Humble City Cafe about two weeks ago, and I'm still sad that I missed out on the experience. We had put in our order, but an hour and a half later, our food still hadn't come. When we asked our waiter where our food was, they said it had been like this all morning, but barely anyone was in the cafe! We only ordered an egg and 2 pancakes, but they still took forever. We asked our waiter to talk to the manager about the wait and all they said was, "Sorry, I'll deal with it." Yet, he never dealt with it. I wish I could have experienced the food, but unfortunately, I did not. If you have time, come. If you don't, move on. read more
